Howto control main memory usage
Hi all,
I have to run some experiment in which there is a lot of File I/O. I do not want the files to cached. The results might get affected because of this. Is there any way I can control the caching. Even if there is something to periodically free the memory, it will be great. I am working on a linux machine so any linux specific command will also do.
thanks in advance
regards,
piyush
Is this related to Java?
1. "I do not want the files to cached."
2. "Is there any way I can control the caching."
3. "is there something to periodically free the memory?"
Still don't quite get your question.

How to analyse the main memory usage in SAP ERP systems?
Dear expert,
I'm doing a research work about analysing the main memory usage in SAP ERP systems.
I would like to find out what is load in buffers and when. That means, which process have the control of these memories and which are always performing something, tables loaded, and so on. Becuase I tried to isolate the space needed by a simple webservice call (create one material) in my test system, but even after a $SYN there are something stored in the buffers. I use a BAPI to avoid the execution of the SAPGUI and its repercussion in the system (I know the BAPI called uses resources too, but when I run this BAPI to get the statistics, it's like ST02, I get different values). Could someone help me or recommend something specific to read? Thanks a lot in advance.Dear expert,
Thanks a lot for your answer. The point is now that I want to isolate the memory used by a webservice that I call, I mean, I would like to know how many memory is this webservice using in each buffer. And could you tell me where could I read something about the order that things happen in SAP System when a webservice is called (always memory related), that's which steps are done to store data in buffers and so on. Thanks in advance. -
Application Server Control 10g : Memory usage wrong
Hi,
We have install an OAS 10g on Windows Server 2003 with 8Gb RAM. But on the Application server Control, only 2 Gb are display in memory usage (Application server 372 Mb+Free 1675 Mo).
How configure Application Server to see all memory available ?
Thanks32bit Windows have 4GB address space, which is split 2Gb system and 2Gb user. So user processes have 2Gb virtual address space (even if hw has more RAM).
Perhaps "App Server Control" mem stats system is limited by this concept. And maybe the app server is threaded?
Is it 32bit or 64bit hardware and OS? -
Cache memory usage of Hyperion Planning, Workspace and Financial Reporting
We have installed Hyperion Planning, Workspace and Financial Reporting in one single server and we would like to know is there any cache memory setting can be fine tuned to improved the overall online performance of the system.
How can we control the memory usage of individual user logged into Workspace and Hyperion Planning? And if users generate a large size report in Financial Reporting, should more memory be allocated to the user so as to speed up the report generation speed?
Thanks in advance!Our onsite consultants told us that as we have many web forms and some web forms contains lot of cells, the compiled Hyperion Planning application is quite large (> 1GB) and sometimes may have "out of memory" problem. We just wonder we are using 64bit version of Windows 2003 we should have a much larger memory address space. How can we improve the "out of memory" issue?
Or Hyperion Planning is still a 32 bit application? -
Can I Control Memory Usage?
I'm starting a new project. The project now has only three camera files of about 24 minutes (1920x1080i mpeg2), a few short "resource" files, and three sequences (the multi, the target, and a short 10-sec intro), yet when I restart PremierePro CS4 I get the warning "Adobe Premiere Pro is running low on memory..."
The system has 12GB and uses Vista 64-bit. In the past I would see that warning only when the Project panel is filled with all sorts of stuff, but this project is just getting started.
I notice that already the Task Manager > Processes tab, Commit Size is 3,439,732K (it fluctuates slightly just sitting there while I type this), which is probably what triggered that warning.
Is there any thing I could be doing in Premiere, rearranging something or moving files around or whatever, to control memory usage to keep that Commit Size from being so large?1. Commit Size is a selectable column - from Task Manager choose View > Select Columns, then check Memory - Commit Size.
2. Commit Size is (I believe for some reason, but can't defend) the address space allocated by the OS to the application, not the actual amount of physical main memory currently tied up by the application. The number of processes is not relevant because the OS performs paging. Since Premiere Pro CS4 is still a 32-bit application (I don't know what it means when people say "optimized for 64-bit") having a Commit Size of 3.4+ GB is approaching the PC 32-bit limit (after you subtract out the fixed addresses).
3. I read about Eddie Lotter's first suggestion and it makes sense, but I haven't proved it yet.
4. Just after my post PPro crashed; I sent in the crash message to Adobe, reloaded the project, and this time the Commit Size wasn't even 1GB!!! Yes, this was before I could try Eddie's suggestion.

JMX programmatically control memory usage
Hi,
I would like a server to programmatically receive updates concerning the memory usage of its clients. JMX seems to be able to do this. I have not found an example on how to do this programmatically.
Is there an easier way to do this other than using JMX? If not where can i start and learn how to do this? I have very little time and there is a sea of JMX tutorials,articles and code sample -unfortunately not relevant to what i need to do.
Can somebody at least guide me to some resources specific to my purpose?
ThanksString jmxUrl = String.format("service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://%s:%s/jmxrmi", server, port);
MBeanServerConnection con = JMXConnectorFactory.connect(new JMXServiceURL(jmxUrl), null).getMBeanServerConnection();
List<MemoryPoolMXBean> pools = new ArrayList<MemoryPoolMXBean>();
Set<ObjectInstance> beans = null;
try {
beans = con.queryMBeans(new ObjectName("java.lang:type=MemoryPool,name=*"), null);
} catch (MalformedObjectNameException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
for (ObjectInstance bean : beans) {
pools.add(ManagementFactory.newPlatformMXBeanProxy(con, bean.getObjectName().toString(), MemoryPoolMXBean.class));

Number of times main memory has been unloaded in last 24 hours "0"
Hello Experts,
I am getting error "BIA server is overloaded" in RSDDBIAMON2 tcode.
Description is below:
BIA server is overloaded
Message no. RSD_TREX154
Diagnosis
The SAP NetWeaver BI Accelerator server is overloaded. Either there has recently been a forced unload of the BIA main memory, ort he total volume of loaded data exceeds the limit of 50% of the available main memory.
Both these situations negatively impact the stability of the BIA server.
Procedure
You have two options:
Decrease the volume of data in the BIA: Delete BIA indexes that you do not currently need or that you do not urgently require.
Contact your BIA hardware partner and carry out a new sizing for the BIA hardware.
Procedure for System Administration
By default, this message only appears as a warning in processes that index large volumes of data in the BIA. You can use administration parameters to specify this warning as an error message as well. This causes all index processes to terminate if the error occurs.
To do this, execute program RSDDTREX_ADMIN_MAINTAIN with parameters Object= DONT_IGNORE_BIA_OVERLOAD, Value = X, and INSERT/UPDATE = X.
Diagnois says
1) The total volume of loaded data exceeds the limit of 50% of the available main memory,I have already checked the disk used for storing the indexes and it is not more than 50% of the BW Accelerator main memory.
2)There has recently been a forced unload of the BIA main memory: As per error details Number of times main memory has been unloaded in last 24 hours: '0' ie no unloaded had happened in last 24 hours.
Please help me how i can solve this erro as there is not unload happened and also disk usage under control.
Regards,
Akshayhi,
1) You can check the traces via the trex standalone tool trexadmin or transaction TREXADMIN. You must provide more details to get an analyze. Was there running a lot of process chains at this time? Have you checked the memory monitoring of the BWA blades?
2) transaction TREXADMIN -> tab version..
You can try going through SAP notes which help with high memory issues.
Sometimes, the rfc server sometimes takes a lot of memory and doesn't free it afterwards.
Thanks,

CPU/Memory Usage increases when loading SWF files in AIR.
Hi,
We face the below mentioned problem. Would be great if someone could help us.
Due to problems with uploading the attachment here, please send a email to the following email-id ([email protected]) and I shall send the attachment in response.
CPU/Memory usage increases drastically while moving the SWC components and loading the SWF Files.
"Problem Description" - On executing the sample application, a window with multiple objects is shown. The loaded SWC components in flex consume too much Memory and CPU cycles. This is visible in TaskManager. On dragging one of the object, CPU / memory usage increases drastically.
"Steps to Reproduce" -
Draggable window is placed at the bottom in the sample application with Text indication.
Drag the indicated window.
"Actual Result" - System's CPU usage increasing drastically around 50% to 60 %.
"Expected Result" - Drastical increase in memory\CPU should not occur.
"Any Workarounds" - No"
Thanks in advance.You can control your external swf from your main.swf in the following method:
loadswf(clips[0]);
function loadswf(tmp:String):void{
passedString=tmp;
ldr= new Loader();
ldr.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, progressListener);
ldr.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, swfLoaded);
ldr.load(new URLRequest(animPath+tmp));
function progressListener (e:ProgressEvent):void{
ploader.visible=true;
function swfLoaded(e:Event):void {
mcExt = e.target.content as MovieClip;
ldr.contentLoaderInfo.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, swfLoaded);
mcExt.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,onEnterfn);
ploader.visible=false;
addChild(mcExt);
function onEnterfn(e:Event):void{
var num:int=mcExt.currentFrame;
switch(passedString){
case clips[0]:
if (num==1) mcExt.play();
if (num==9) {
mcExt.skipmc.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,skipfn);
function skipfn(e:MouseEvent):void{
mcExt.stop();
mcExt.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,onEnterfn);
gotoAndStop("help");
if (num==mcExt.totalFrames){
mcExt.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,onEnterfn);
gotoAndStop("help");

Very high memory usage with Yahoo Mail
After using Yahoo Mail for an hour or so my memory usage increases to a very high level.
Just now, after reading and deleting about 50 e-mails (newsletters etc.) I noticed Firefox 17 running slowly and checked the memory usage in Windows Task Manager (I am using XP) and it was 1.2 Gb. My older laptop only has 2 Gb of RAM. Yahoo Mail was the only thing open at the time.
I never notice this problem with Gmail which I mainly use. However I use Yahoo Mail for quite a few newsletters etc. that are less important and which I only check once a week or so.
I found the following bug report about 3 years old which almost exactly describes my problem.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=506771
But this report involves a much earlier Firefox version, and at the end it seems to say that the problem was fixed. However it well describes my current issue with Firefox 17, especially the continual increase in memory while using the up/down arrow keys to scroll through Yahoo e-mails.
Is this normal to have to shut down and reopen Firefox every hour or so to clean out the memory? For some reason I only notice this when using Yahoo Mail. After using many other sites and having multiple tabs open for several hours I rarely reach that kind of memory usage. About the highest I've seen with other sites after a couple of hours is 600 Kb which is roughly when I start notice slower response times.See also:

Excessively high memory usage by Tomcat in NT
We are facing the problem of excessive memory usage by our servlets (that call JNI functions). The memory usage seems to touch 50+ MB in 2000 Server but it drops down to 30 MB soon. But, this does not happen in NT. The memory keeps on increasing and there is a point in time when Tomcat occupies all the available memory.
We are taking care of garbage collecting the objects frequently(by calling Runtime.gc()). Is there any other way by which we can have some kind of control over the usage of memory?
Do we have to install a patch for NT (if something like this is available)?
NT Server:
PIII 500 MHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD
2000 Server:
PIII 700 MHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB HDD
Tomcat:
Version 3.2.1
JDK:
Sun's JDK 1.3
Any suggestions, pointers are appreciated.
Thanks
Manish
[email protected]Hi, Manish:
I've solved memory leak problem in JNI once. Memory leak may be resulted from inapproriate memory access in C or C++ library.
My previous problem is: I get a C byte array from Java byte array by GetByteArrayElements, however, I never call ReleaseByteArrayElements before C function return. That will let that Java byte array unable to be garbage collected. After inserting ReleaseByteArrayElements before return, it won't run out of memory again. Similar problems may happen when useless Java object's reference count not zero because NewGlobalReference without calling DeleteGlobalReference.
However, I've faced another problem in JNI (see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=52&thread=212275). I wonder if JVM release or reset memory allocated in C library. Hope it is not true.

Updated to 4.0 today and have things about where I would like them, but memory usage is at least 4 times higher than 3.6.15. I attribute some of that to AFOM not being compatible and being disabled, but I can hit 1.9GB with all my open tabs where 3.6.15 is around 500MB.
Is there something I can do? A memory manager for 4.0?
I'm afraid this will turn out to be unusable.
~BobWell, FF4 definitely uses more memory than FF 3.6. No doubt for me. I have it under control by being lucky enough to get a beta copy of a memory manager for FF4, but without that I would have had to switch back to FF 3.6.
It still uses more memory than I think it should and strains the resources on my machine.

Internet Explorer - Memory Usage
Hi,
I have developed a VC model and deployed it in the portal. When i execute the model in internet explorer 7 or 6, the memory usage keeps building up and does not drop even after getting all the data. I have got couple of popup iviews in the model which when executed increases the memory usage further more and eventually internet explorer stops responding.
Currently the only way to clear the memory is to close the Internet explorer window. Is there any other way to flush out the memory after the data has been retrieved from the back-end.
Regards,
Ravi.Hi Ravi,
I googled in and found few links which can be helpful to you.
http://cybernetnews.com/browser-comparison-internet-explorer-firefox-chrome-safari-opera/ - which is all abut the memory tests which were conducted for various browsers including ie regarding the usage of memory.
http://www.bigresource.com/PHP-Flush-clearing-buffer-3rXPLSop.html
http://www.wimpyplayer.com/docs/howto/clear_cache.html - which tells about the way to flush out the browser memory for better usage.

Sudden high memory usage, can't find cause
I did a big update yesterday, and today I've started to notice very high memory usage. I wasn't keeping track before so I can't say how much it increased, but I've never had problems before, and the slowness and lack of responsiveness have been noticeable, though I haven't ruled out other possible causes for that. Here's the output of 'free -m':
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 7971 7826 144 0 1 149
-/+ buffers/cache: 7674 296
Swap: 9215 458 8757
It wasn't as bad as that right after startup, though usage still seemed suspiciously high. What makes this whole thing a mystery to me is that none of my running processes seem to be using that much memory! Here's the output of 'top -b -n 1':

Reverting to the 13.6 version solved the problem. Lesson learned: if there's a ton of memory being used that isn't owned by a running process, start looking for bug reports involving drivers. Especially drivers known for being, well, pretty bad. Was there any method I could have used that would have told me that Catalyst was using all my ram, or is kernel-space memory usage pretty much a black box?

HOWTO: Control Printer Attributes for a Report at Run Time Reports 6i
HOWTO: Control Printer Attributes for a Report at Run Time
Like page width , height etc
my problem is i had installed a printer and it is set for
printing different reports ( like invoice slips , legal size ,
A3 etc ) each time i have to manually set the page settup from
printer folder .instead if there is an option to set the printer
attributes from Reports 6i it is great
rajeshAll the Printer Setup(Page Height and Page Width) must be set in
the Reprot Program. These can be set at the Layout-Main Section
in the Object Navigator.

I try to proove the advantage of SAX (and StAX) parser, i.e. the memory usage over time is very low and quite constant over time while parsing a large XML file.
DOM APIs create a DOM that is stored in the memory and therefore the memory usage is at least the filesize.
To analyse the SAX heap usage over time I used the following source:
import java.io.File;
import java.io.FileInputStream;
import java.io.InputStream;
import org.xml.sax.InputSource;
import org.xml.sax.XMLReader;
import org.xml.sax.helpers.XMLReaderFactory;
public class ParserMemTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Start");
try {
InputStream xmlIS = new FileInputStream(
new File("xmlTestFile-0.xml") );
HeapAnalyser ha = new HeapAnalyser(xmlIS);
InputSource insource = new InputSource(ha);
XMLReader SAX2parser = XMLReaderFactory.createXMLReader();
//SAX2EventHandler handler = new SAX2EventHandler();
//SAX2parser.setContentHandler(handler);
SAX2parser.parse(insource);
} catch (Exception e) {
System.out.println("Finished.");
}and the HeapAnalyser class:
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.InputStream;
public class HeapAnalyser extends InputStream {
private InputStream is = null;
private int byteCounter = 0;
private int lastByteCounter = 0;
private int byteStepLogging = 200000; //bytes between logging times of measurement
public HeapAnalyser(InputStream is) {
this.is = is;
@Override
public int read() throws IOException {
int b = is.read();
if(b!=-1) {
byteCounter++;
return b;
@Override
public int read(byte b[]) throws IOException {
int i = is.read(b);
if(i!=-1) {
byteCounter += i;
//LOG
if ((byteCounter-lastByteCounter)>byteStepLogging) {
lastByteCounter = byteCounter;
System.out.println(byteCounter + ": " + getHeapSize() + " bytes.");
return i;
@Override
public int read(byte b[], int off, int len) throws IOException {
int i = is.read(b, off, len);
if (i!=-1) {
byteCounter += i;
//LOG
if ((byteCounter-lastByteCounter)>byteStepLogging) {
lastByteCounter = byteCounter;
System.out.println(byteCounter + ": " + getHeapSize() + " bytes.");
return i;
public static String getHeapSize(){
Runtime.getRuntime().gc();
return Long.toString((Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory() - Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory())/1000);
}and these are the results:

5730640: 19237 bytes.
5935308: 19898 bytes.
Finished.
As you can see while parsing the XML file (200k elements, about 6MB) the heap memory raises. I would expect this result when a DOM API is analysed, but not with SAX .
What could be the reason? The Runtime class measurement, the SAX implementation or what?
