HOWTO Firewire and IMAC

Dear Friends,
What use FIREWIRE in IMAC. Please help I am a new to MAC.
Thanks,
Ashrafpa

Also, see http://www.usb-ware.com/firewire-vs-usb.htm Note that FW800 is about twice as fast as FW400, which this page reports results for. IMO, USB is fine for slow input and output devices: mice, keyboards, printers, etc. FW was explicitly designed for high speed data transfer.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video cameras (Canon GL2 or Sony) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable. I've tried two different cables.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.

A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

  • Sync Macbook and iMac

I recently purchased a new 27" iMac. I want to be able to keep my photos and music in-sync with both my new iMac and my Macbook. For example, when I am on-the-go, I want to be able to open my Macbook and if I have downloaded a new song back home from my iMac; I want it to be available on my Macbook. I know I can enable Library Sharing via iPhoto or iTunes, but that only works with both computers on and running. I want something like MobileMe, where if one thing changes, it changes it on every device. However, I have gigabytes upon gigabytes of photos and music, therefore MobileMe or DropBox aren't useful to me. Please help me. I have read in some threads about using FireWire and such, but am illiterate when it comes to how to set this up.
    Thanks,

I do exactly the same thing. But it's not as easy as one would think. I like to keep my MacBook exactly like my iMac right down to the desktop.
Music - If you use iTunes you need to turn on the home share option and let them sync when they see each other. This is automatic and built into iTunes. If you do not use iTunes, then syncing of your music should be no problem with ChronoSync.
Files other then in Mail - I use ChronoSync. I have it set to sync everything I want to keep on both machines automatically. The moment each computer sees the other they sync. Usually very quickly unless I have change, added, removed a lot of files.
Mail - You need to use an IMAP system to keep all mail synced as copying the files from computer to another will not put them back into mail. Like iTunes it has it's own database engine that everything has to go through.
Contacts, Calendar, notes, widgets, dock items, keychains, mail rules, bookmarks, and preferences - If you use MobileMe to sync then do not sync any other way. It will cause havoc... If you do not use MobileMe, then there are settings in ChronoSync to sync those too.

  • Simple way of transferring files beween iBook and iMac?

So far, I have burned CDs to transfer files back and forth between the two machines. I also am considering using a portable back up drive.
I'd prefer a simple transfer of files between the machines via fire wire cable!
However, I have been discouraged so far to explore the "networking" solutions further, because of the (for me) complicated protocol and addressing issues in the networking preference panel....
A simple solution would make me happy!
    Thanks,
    PP

If you boot the iBook into FireWire target disk mode it will act as an external FireWire drive.
Then all you need to do is connect the iBook and iMac with a 6 pin to 6 pin FireWire cable. The iBook will appear on the iMac's desktop as a hard drive. You can then easily drag and drop files between the 2 machines.

  • File sharing permissions issue between Macbook Pro and iMac

    Hi,
I'm having trouble sharing files to and from a Macbook Pro and iMac. Both are brand new, and connected via a firewire cable (Due to large file sizes)
I can share files between both computers no problem, but the files are set to 'Read only' by default once moved to the over device and can't be moved or renamed without requiring a password every single time.
Is there a way to totally share files without having to enter a password every time I want to move or rename it?
    > File sharing is turned ON on both computers.
    > Share files and folders using AFP is ticked
    > Share files and folders using SMB is ticked also.
    Thanks

Try disabling SMB File Sharing, & in the Sharing Pref Panes>Sharing>Options, see what users are listed.
Also, try logging into the other Mac with the Other Mac's username & PW, not using the name & PW of the one you're on.

  • Synchonising files between Macbook pro and iMac

I have a 6 year old Macbook Pro. It has a number of files in the Documents folder which are unique.  I want to sell it but before I do so I want to transfer just the unique files across to my iMac.  Is there software that will let me do this?  The documents directory is 15 GB in size.

Did you start the MBP in FW Target Disk Mode?

I also tried plugging an Ethernet cable connecting each system directly to the other

Presumably you have a home LAN. Why don't you connect like that—it's the easiest thing option.

  • Transferring Data between MacBook Pro and iMac

My husband has a MacBook Pro as well as an iMac. He uses the laptop when we travel. when we bought the laptop, we transferred all the data on the iMac to his laptop using a firewire connection. It was months ago and I am having trouble remembering just how we did it. Now, though, he wants to copy data from his laptop to his desktop and I need help working that out. He has Entourage installed and that is what he uses for his mail, documents, etc. Where do I go to find those folders and how do I get them onto his iMac. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

It would be a mistake to replace a new fully functioning system on your iMac with a potentially dysfunctional one on your MBP. If you need to transfer personal data then you can connect the two via FireWire cable and use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data manually. If you have a MobileMe account, then you can sync your Mail accounts, iCal calendars, Address Book entries, and Safari bookmarks that way.
You can use ordinary backup software to sync two computers connected by FireWire and using Target Disk Mode. You can use a USB flash drive depending upon the amount of data you need to move between the two computers. You can use an external hard drive as intermediary. However, Time Machine is not a utility intended to keep two computers synced.
You should give thought to what you need synched, as your question seems to imply you think that means everything, but I doubt that's what you had in mind.

  • Bootcamp 3.1 and imac windows 7 64bit update not installing. Audio issues!

After many days of work getting the windows 7 working in bootcamp in my imac 27 (still with audio issues) I eagerly awaited the bootcamp update and imac updates.
    Neither will install.
Then I find that according to tech support as of now I have to reinstall Windows 7 again for the updates to work!
It took me 5 full 8 hours days to get all my scientific programs installed and working, now I find I can't even simply update the drivers I need. I don't want to reinstall.
    My only issues are audio.
    Here they are:
    1) The headset jack works fine on the Mac side, but in Windows 7, it causes the i7 intel CPU to go crazy. There is no CPU spike on the mac side.
    2) The headset jack in the imac is a trrs jack. The same as in the iphone, a tri-band jack that has three bands, two audio out channels and one mic in channel. A trrs headset works fine on the mac side with using the headset mic (as in iphone) rather than the built in mic. (this provides much better quality for sound recording). I don't want to use a usb mike.
In Windows 7 the mic part of the trrs headset does not work.
    3) In Windows 7 when going into audio devices recording, no audio mixer shows up, so when I do video or audio screen capture the only way to capture the sound is through the speakers and then back through the imac built in mic, rather than directly through the unit. (terrible sound quality) On the mac side the mixer element works fine.
Now I find from other imac users that even the new updates for the imac on windows 7 don't address and fix the audio issues. I am sure not going to go through 5 more days work only to find the audio issues still don't work.
I need these audio aspects to work properly though!
I have tried to get drivers for the cirrus logic audio card, but guess what there are none available and cirrus logic doesn't even recognize the board or offer drivers.
I have many windows programs I must have for my scientific research!I bought the top of the line Imac with all the bells and whistles because Apple promised that the machine could run Windows 7 in bootcamp natively!
It doesn't. This has been a nightmare of problems.
Is Apple going to step up to the plate and make good on their promises?
Does any one have a fix for any of the audio issues, or know how to install the new drivers without a complete reinstall of Windows?
Installing a few sound drivers and software should not require a complete reinstall. Getting the proper drivers for the headset jack audio in and audio out jack should be the most basic of fixes. Making the audio mixer work should be elementary.
If you are an Apple tech person or an Apple user that can help on these issues, please do!

PS I will post this under Imac windows 7 updates without a reinstall and under
    imac Sound issues.

On another thread a few people have responded saying that their imac has the same situation, the cpu is going crazy and the imac gets hot with headphones or speakers plugged in. But this doesn't happen in the mac side.
If you have an late 2009 imac and don't have these audio issues, let us hear from you. If you don't, lay out the problem here.
Here is my last two cents in to the inquiry.
Not only does the cpu run crazy but the imac 27 gets very, very hot. Since I unplugged the headphones, it runs much, much cooler.
Certainly, some Mac engineers should take care of this problem, it seems it is universal on all the imac 27's and from what I gather, the smaller screened cousins too.
Also, we certainly want a stereo mix option for audio in or out, or what is called "what you hear" or wave out. Imac is supposed to be much geared to multimedia apps.
Finally, the mic jack part of the trrs set up MUST be fixed! A lot of manufacturers are going to headset combo jacks as they call them, mic in and stereo out on the same tribanded plug. But, the old single jack for mic in and single jack for stereo out are two tiny parts of the hardware and super inexpensive for the manufacturer. Why in the **** to go to the "advanced" triplug if the **** thing doesn't work.
Mac has a great reputation. I hope they remedy these problems right away.
Anyone whose imac 27 or 24 whose headset plug is working correctly. Let us know! I don't think anyone's is, but I think that few people understand that their cpu is running so much faster with the plug in, plus few even understand the combo jack and the triband, or trrs audio jack! Out of 4 audio technicians I talked to, not one of them knew what a trrs jack was or that you even have a mic in jack as part of the headset jack!
When I told one senior that it worked on the Mac side, he didn't believe for a while, thought my sound might be recorded from the onboard mic, but I proved it to him by tapping iaudibly on my iphone mic headset and and it showing up in garage band clearly and listening to big difference in audio.
As for a usb audio adapter, I am in a neon light environment and find that those adapters are more sensitive to electrical interference. Besides I want to use the headset jack as it was meant to be used!
    Thats it.
Again, if anyone using an imac 27 and windows 7 64 or 32 doesnt have these problems, let us know! We are all anxious for a fix!
    Best to all!

  • New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
    Thanks!

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

  • Can I use Mac Mini as a "server" for a MacBook Pro and iMac?

I want to develop a simple system for accessing my files from multiple devices.
I heavily use iTunes (190 GB), iPhoto (120 GB) and iMovie (30 GB, but want to do more when I get time).  Additionally, I store lots of old videos on circa 10 portable hard drives (1 TB each), which I access occasionally.
The family use all this content and we currently have a MacBook Pro and are considering buying a new computer - either a new MacBook Pro or an iMac. We also have iPads, iPhones etc and a Time Capsule. We use wireless fibre optic broadband.
I don't really want multiple iTunes and iPhoto libraries.  We want all our music and pictures in single master libraries that we can all access and update.
As there is seemingly too much data to store on iCloud, we need to find an alternative solution.
    My possible solution is:
    (1) Load my master iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie libraries ("iTPM libs") on a Mac mini
    (2) Buy a new MacBook Pro or iMac (probably doesnt matter which)
    (3) Link the MacBook Pro(s) and iMac to the Mac mini to access iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie and the master iTPM libs
    (4) Plug the portable hard drives into the Mac mini whenever I need to access the video content stored on the portable hard drives
    (5) Add "users" to the system (i.e. family members), in the same way you would access a shared server at work
    (6) Over time, buy more computers to access the system in the same way
    My questions are:
    (1) Is this system feasible?
    (2) If so, can I edit the iTPM libs from the MacBook Pro or iMac?
    (3) If so, what happens if both the MacBook Pro and iMac are accessing the libraries at the same time? Which takes precedent?
    (4) Would this solution be significantly slower than having separate libraries on the different computers?
    (5) Is there an alternative approach that might work better for my needs? (which are, after all, relatively straight forward).  When I went to the Apple store they were unsure!
    Many thanks.

[…] We want all our music and pictures in single master libraries that we can all access and update.
The "update" portion of this is where your problems will arise.  You'd be better to consider your proposed system initially in terms of content "consumption", before getting into the nitty-gritty of editing shared content.
iTunes has the Home Sharing feature built-in, which solves the content consumption issue.
I don't know anything about sharing iPhoto libraries, but this KB article looks useful.
As for iMovie, I think there are two things you want to do: share the raw data (sound effects, music, photos etc.) that are used to create iMovie content; and share the finished results.  Is that right?  I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that, but if you clarify your aims in this regard, it'll help the next person who comes along.
When it comes to updating content, such as adding new music to iTunes or iPhoto, I'd suggest you do it through the Mac mini directly.  This seems the least problematic solution.  You wouldn't necessarily need a dedicated display for the Mac mini - you could use remote desktop or VNC or what-have-you.
As for speed: doing anything across a network is always going to be slower than doing it locally.  But, it probably won't matter for content consumption (though if you're all watching different movies at the same time the drives on the server may struggle, and the wifi bandwidth might be tight).
I hope this represents a good initial response to your query.

  • How can I do to have the same contacts in all my devices, pc, iPad and iMac?

I have severl devices and the last taime I updated my contacts was almos manually. I would Like to be able to have the same contacts in all, pc, iPad, and iMac.
How can I set it so to get it done through iCloud?
For instance in my pc ( windows 7 Home Premium ) I use Outlook 2007.
Thanks for any comment on this.

switching on iCloud should automatically tell it to merge data with that device and icloud. i'm on a mac but its gotta be the same on all devices and systems.

  • How do I set up Apple Mail with Yahoo (IMAP) so I can delete mail on my iphone but leave it on the server and iMac.

I am trying to maintain my inbox on my imac while not carrying around all my mail on my iphone.  As of now, I only seem to be able to sync the inboxes.  If I delete a mail on my iphone, it disappears on both the server and imac.  I only seem to be able to make it move the mail to the deleted mail box and keep it there.

That's the way IMAP servers work. The messages really live on the server; the iPhone and the iMac just view them.

Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.
