Howto get rid of duplicates in iTunes but keep albums complete

I try to get rid of duplicates in iTunes but came across the following problem:
In File -> display duplicates tons of duplicates show up, but when I delete one file the entry is the itunes-library is deleted as well and I will miss this song in that specific album.
Is there a solution to refer to 1 file on disk with multiple entries in my library, to keep my albums complete with the correct ID3-tags (meta-data) and get rid of duplicate files on disk. This would save me a lot of space on disk.
Or is the correct way of avoiding copies of files in iTunes, to drag-in the file once and link with various album-playlists to it? Then you still missing the possibility of saving meta-data of those playlist-links, right?

iTunes does not have the ability to show just one file in multiple albums. So you'll have to keep the multiple files for multiple albums.

Until then you will have to resort to sorting by a particular label such as artist and manually scanning, third party utilities such as Dougscripts Dupin to deal with duplicates, or revert back to iTunes 10.7.

OK I understand. Many of the old iTunes 10 features are still present, but they have been hidden by default.
Bring back your Sidebar with control S and your menu bar with control B. There are icons for them but the control keys are easier to describe.
The View menu will then be visible, where you can customize your viewing preferences and make it appear a little more familiar.
You don't have to remove the old version to update it.
Reverting to iTunes 10 is possible but very tedious.

I recently lost my job and I am looking for some way to cut costs. I currently have an iPhone 4 with unlimited data. I am considering selling my phone and going back to an older phone that I had before I renewed my contract. Is there a way for me to change my plan and eliminate the data and the insurance on the iPhone but keep the 700 minutes/month without paying an early termination fee? I just wanted to see if anyone knew before I put the phone up for sale.

I am sorry to learn you lost your job. To clarify what was stated by mdram4x4, you would be able to keep your current calling plan and still ask to have the insurance and the data plan removed. There would only be an early termination fee if you canceled your line of service and were under a customer agreement for that line. The amount of the early termination fee prorates $10.00 less a month the longer you remain under a customer agreement. We can remove the insurance and the data plan removed upon request. When you sell your iPhone to go back to an older device, you would no longer have the unlimited data plan. You may need to add a data plan on your line depending on the phone. We offer different tiered data plans that you can review at this link. Also the warranty would not transfer over to the new owner. Found an old Apple post about how to find duplicate files in iTunes. iTunes 11 seems to not have this ability, or at least the same way of doing things. Can someone explain how to find duplicates with 11?

Right now you will have to do it manually by just sorting by track name and looking, or use a third-party tool such as Dupin. Apple has said that the Show Duplicates feature will return in a future update, but provided no timeframe.

I have lot of duplicates. Songs listed twice, and both play well, and they both show in finder to link to same exact location on hard drive. I'm afraid to deleting one of the duplicates then. any ideas appreciated.

You may delete the dupes without problems if you don't let iTunes put the original files to trash (you will be asked for that)

Thank you for the question. It sounds like you have two separate iTunes Libraries but would like to add the music from one to the other to have one consolidated library.
If you know where the files are for each library, I recommend opening one iTunes Library in iTunes and importing the files from the other library using the following steps:
Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
MacAdd to Library
Windows
Add File to Library
Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add

Next, you can search for duplicates:
Choose View > Show Duplicate Items to show duplicate items (matches are based on the song name and artist). If you have multiple versions of the same song (for example, live and studio versions, or versions from different albums) you can hold the Alt or Option key (for Mac OS X) or the Shift key (for Windows) and choose View > Show Exact Duplicate Items. This will show only duplicate songs having the same name, artist, and album.

You don't say whether you are on PC or Mac. For Mac there are these two programs which might help (I havn't tried either) :

There are probably similar programs for PCs, but I don't know what they are. On a PC you can hold the shift key and do File > Display Exact Duplicates (without the shift they may not be exact matches) - if one of each duplicate pair has the same date added then you can sort by that and then delete those with (or without) that date.

Welcome to the forums.
If you have duplicate songs in iTunes you ought to be able to find them by using the "Find Duplicates" function and erase them by highlighting them all and pressing delete. Remember, though, that songs are not necessarily recognized as duplicates if they don't have the same tags (that is, a song can be duplicated but with a slightly different song title and iTunes cannot recognize it as a duplicate and it would be up to you to delete it manually).
Once you've cleaned up iTunes it will automagically clean up your iPhone when you sync it. So work on getting iTunes in order first.
People have complained about shuffle mode on the iPhone. One thing you can do is to create a smart playlist that selects the songs you want and does it randomly. You may have to create one or more of these depending on how you listen to music, but they will indeed give you "shuffled" songs.

Please do not delete any files from the HDD without having a current backup.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say you've "deleted all old libraries." Can you explain that?
If all you are wanting to do is empty the iTunes library of all music, video playlists, etc. the easiest way is to quit iTunes and, in the Finder, go to ~/Music/iTunes and simply move the .itdb, .itl and .xml files to the trash. Launch iTunes again and the library will be empty.
You should be prompted to add content, so you can let iTunes scan the HDD if you like.

How to delete duplicates from iTunes but not hard drive

I'm running iTunes 10 and have my music stored on both my NAS drive and backup drive. Each track appears twice on iTunes: once as lossless for streaming and and once as compressed AAC files for synching to ipods and iphones.
For some reason, when my PC is turned on after being turned on, the linkstation cannon be 'seen' by iTunes, and therefore if I try to play a track, 'the original file cannot be found'. If I use the 'add folder to library' option in the 'file' dropdown menu, the tracks are located again.
Unfortunately, I the last time I did this it resulted in 4 copies of each song on itunes; 2 lossless and 2 AAC.
I have 2 questions:
Firstly is there an easy way to delete the duplicates from my iTunes library so that I am left with only 1 lossless and one AAC copy, but not deleing the files from my NAS and backup drive?
Is there a way I can just store my music as lossless, but convert it easily to aa more compressed format for synching to iphone and ipod?

You can try my new DeDupe script. It should be able to get rid of the redundant copies while keeping one copy of each track in each format. See this thread for background.
I've not used the feature, but iTunes can downsample to 128k AAC on the fly as it syncs your devices. Of course you might find the process is too slow for your needs or find that 128k is too much compression.

How to get rid of duplicate files in Windows Media Player 11, I am seeking an answer if at all possible.

I don't know if this is the appropriate forum to ask this question....if it is not please guide me to the correct support forum. I am just trying to find out if there is an easier way of getting rid of duplicate files in my Windows Media Player 11.
Also how do I prevent my Media player from obtaining all these duplicate files from other libraries. I have iTunes installed and my home network has four other computers belonging in the home group that have all their own respective music libraries.
I guess I was naïve but I thought that when Windows Media Player is out searching other libraries it would know not to take duplicates of songs that it has already. Enough said .....if anyone out there can help me that would be great. I have in

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership.See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)
