Howto speed up painfully slow computer???

I have a 12" powerbook g4 that was the last model before the intel macs. it has a 1.5 Gig processor and 512 megs of ram. it has an 80 gig HD with 15 gigs free.
it is painfully slow. i don't run a lot of apps at the same time, i have restarted, i have repaired disk permissions and run disk utility. i also ran onyx.
my wife has a pre-intel ibook that has less power but runs significantly faster running essentially the same apps.
how can i speed up my computer?
thank you.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Best strategy for using external drive to speed up painfully slow mac mini

I have Intel core duo, and LaCie external drive. Many programmes are almost unusably slow. Like Adobe Photoshop, Garageband, Logic Express, SecondLife etc... (would have been nice if apple had told me the 'improved spec' would mean so many programmes would no longer work!)
I am looking for the best way to utilise the external drive. I have now set up to boot from the LaCie, but it is no better. Id like to know whats best to do with the two drives. Would one be best kept as clear as possible? And should that be the bootup drive? Originally, the idea was to increase storage and backup. Now it is anything at all, that will make this computer faster. My old G4 PowerMac is actually faster and more reliable!
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

There is no way to improve on the graphics card in your mini - it's built into the logic board and can't be bypassed. However, while that may be a disappointment, it has to be said that by and large the graphics system in the mini is actually very capable, and is probably not the cause of the problem.
What IS the primary issue I suspect is the 512Mb RAM, which on a Core Solo running applications such as Photoshop is so woefully inadequate that it would be a surprise if your old G4 wasn't somewhat faster!
The problem is that Photoshop (the version you have) is not Intel-native, so while it runs, it requires Rosetta. Thus you have a RAM-hungry operating system, a RAM hungry application and a RAM-hungry translation package, all running at the same time. To add to that, since the software is not Intel-native, it has to be translated on-the-fly so considerable CPU time is needed to devote to that process in addition to all the other things the system needs to do in order to run.
Thus your external drive would not help much when used as a boot drive because even though it is likely to be somewhat faster than the internal, the limited RAM of the system will be forcing so many 'paging' actions (writing and reading memory blocks to the hard drive) that any speed gains will be rather heavily masked.
Most of the performance problems you experience can be resolved by upgrading RAM to 2Gb, simply because that will allow MacOS, Rosetta and your software a lot more room to breathe and significantly reduce the paging activity of the system such that then booting from the external will show notable improvements in responsiveness.
Alternatively, you may find that there are Intel-native alternatives to your software which may be available at reasonable cost and provide the features you need. Good examples are such things as GraphicConverter, which is shareware and does much of what Photoshop can do, and NeoOffice, which is open source and free, which is a good alternative to MS Office. These would run without Rosetta and provide you with much improved performance as a consequence.

  • Maverick install = painfully slow computer

I tried to download Maverick update overnight and when I woke up in the morning, my computer was off. I finally got it to turn on after 2 hrs on the grey screen. It was working fine, but then froze an hr later and now is so ridiculously slow. It takes ten minutes to open a folder. I check the  "about this mac" info and it still says 10.6.8 and the Install mavericks icon was on the bottom of my screen. I finally deleted that and some other apps to see if I needed more space, but nothing worked!
I've tried resetting the PRAM and safe-mode, and now it is just sitting on the grey screen again.
HELP!!! I have finals this week!!!!

Why oh why oh did you attempt to upgrade when you have mission critical activities?
    Never update without a backup:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Never update mission critical machines without knowledge if all the applications you need are compatible.  10.6.8 to 10.9.2 is a big jump, and many are not:

  • Poor network speed with 1st generation time capsule and multiple airport express 5Ghz. My network speed slows to a crawl when not close to the time capsule. I get the range that I need, but the speed is painfully slow.

    Hello,
I have a first generation time capsule running 802.11n (b/g compatable) and the airport expresse's are the newer 5ghz models. I have 3 airport express's and I have the range that I need. I can run the time capsule using 802.11n 5ghz, but I loose the range and can't connect to all of the airport express's. My computers and mobile devices run 802.11n. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to increase the network speed. Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Thank you

Unfortunately, you are experiencing one of the downsides to 5 GHz. That's because the higher frequency 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals.
After all, you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain potential speed but in return, you must give up penetration power and distance capability.
In order to work well, 5 GHz signals need to almost have a line-of-sight relationship between devices. Unless you can achieve this, you will do much better to leave the Time Capsule running at the 802.11n (b/g compatible) 2.4 GHz Radio Mode and allow the Express devices to "extend" that network.
As for the location of the AirPort Express devices in an exended network, that is critical for best performance. That's because the Express can only "extend" the quality and bandwidth of the signal that it receives. Post back if you need a few more tips on how to find the best location for the AirPort Express devices.
Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Unfortunately, no.

  • I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with their imac fans being extremely loud when running at slow speeds?  When the computer heats up enough for the fans to run at higher speeds they quiet down. New HD fan was just installed.

I have an imac that I've had for a couple years.  The fans have always been loud when running at the slower speeds.  When the computer heats up enough for the fans to run at a higher speed the fans quiet down.  I had installed SMC fan control after multiple attempts with Apple to get the fan issue resolved.  That seemed to keep the fans quiet enough.  I've never had a problem with overheating.  Recently the fans were becoming loud again even running at the slightly higher speeds so I took it to my local Apple store and they replaced the hard drive fan.  I got it back and it's now as loud or louder than ever!!  And, now SMC fan control won't "stick."  The fans will speed up, but then gradually go back to the lower "loud" levels.  I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

    Thanks jared,
I'm still dealing with this issue through Apple. Some time after I posted this, I contacted Apple again. They did start a case up for me, as I was experiencing the same behavior on two different machines, with two different versions of Windows.
So far it remains unsolved. I've logged iClouds for Windows on my desktop, which is brand new, then logged for awhile after completely uninstalling Norton Security Suite, depending on the Microsoft security for some time, and finally logged after I uninstalled iCloud for Windows, restarted, installed a clean download, and connected using a completely different test account, which Apple set up for me. None of this made any difference. Looking at the logs, it seems every 10 minutes, iCloudServices.exe creates a new TCP connection to confirm I'm using less than 5GB on iCloud, (which I am by a good margin, using less than 2GB), it seems this connection is not closed, and when the next iteration rolls around 10 minutes later, a new TCP connection is created. I come very close to having 6 TCP connections created per hour, until I restart my computer. This works out to... 6 x 24 = 144/day.
Perhaps the article you posted will shed some further light on this. I'm thinking seeing the state of the connection through netstats, at the least, could help.
For the last week, I've been putting a hold on further logging, as Apple wants me to create a new user account on one of my computers, install iCloud for Windows there, and log it running in the other account. This however basically means I cannot use my computer for a fair number of hours, and I've been busy enough with work the past week that I haven't the time or energy to afford to set this up and run it. I've had need of my computers too much for the past week.

My computer is extremely slow, with the rainbow wheel appearing with every click. It is one year old, and has all the most recent updates. Why is it so painfully slow?

That sounds horrible. There are a number of reasons it could occur.
The first thing to do is ensure you have adequate backups, because what you describe can be a symptom of impending disk failure.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting. There are four separate parts to it; read everything first.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • HomeHub 3 - USB speeds painfully slow - known issu...

    Hello I have a BT HomeHub 3 - FW version 12 - on Infinity Option 2.
I have recently bought a WD 2TB external drive and connected it to the USB port on the homehub in the hopes to have all my media on it to share across the network.
It attached fine, was detected fine, and I've successfully mapped it as a network drive on my PC without a problem.
The drive is formatted in NTFS, and my PC is connected to the homehub via the gigabit port.
The read and write speeds though are painfully slow - pretty much solid at 2.0MB/s. Is this just "how it is" or is there a solution, because as it stands I can't see the point in there even being a USB port! I could download another version of the file 4 times faster from the internet than I could copy it locally to the HDD!!
I can't find any information about this or indeed see many complaints, so I'm wondering if this is just mine?
Any feedback would be appreciated - happy to receive technical answers.
    Thanks for any help!

Keith, I have to say that your answer gives no technical insight of the situation,
I highly doubt that this device does not have the processing power to do a transfer of more than 2-3 Mb/Sec,
Don't forget there's even a gigabit ethernet port, and you can easily achieve very high speeds using lan or even the internet connection - forget that this is due to the hub being slow - no chance.
Second point you mention, SMB protocol is not that efficient, that's not the reason for slow speeds again. I can confirm I've got an SMB server setup on a Linux 5 yeard old netbook in the Lan and it's still performing faster than 2 Mb / Sec. SMB is again NOT the problem.
It's most likely a firmware issue where the USB port is either throttled down intentionally or not utilized as a proper USB 2.0 port - I think BT or whoever makes this box ought to give the community an explanation on the matter. When claiming that the usb port can be used to connect storage media they should also mention that the maximum speed is not more than 3 Mb/Sec - otherwise the statement is misleading as most people know that usb storage media perform a lot faster when connected to computers.
It's like someone telling you, that his car drives like ferrari, but not telling you that it cannot do more than 20 mph.

Just upgraded to OS X Lion.  Now Safari behaves erratically.  Some sites load at lightning speeds I have never seen before, others load painfully slow or not at all.  Any ideas here?

I would recommend running Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and Repairing Disk Permissions. Please run this at least 2x. It that doesn't help then post back, there are many other things to try.

  • XP computer painfully slow when latest Firefox is installed

I have a win vista computer which has worked for years and run Firefox fine, Two weeks ago I upgraded firefox as usual and Firefox became painfully slow. A nerdy friend tried reloading the latest Firefox and concluded Firefox was much slower than Explorer or than Opera. My wife is very unhappy. What do I do now?

Well you could start with giving us the troubleshooting information from the Firefox installation that's having problems<br>
*Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the ''Help'' menu and select ''Troubleshooting Information'' from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select ''Troubleshooting Information'' from the menu.
Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
*At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
*Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

I am working on a composition in Adobe After Effects CS6, and it's running painfully slow. I've tried to mess with some of the settings in the preferences, and lowering the quality of the preview. But I still feel like I'm running terribly slow considering the speed of my computer. The composition I'm working with does have 1 camera, and about 45 small 3D comps built into it. No lights. And all of the footage and data is on the Mac OSX hard drive. Which has tons of space available as you can see. I've played around with the settings in After Effects. But nothing seems to significantly speed things up. Any ideas??

    Hey PJ,
I've been using CS6 since it was released, and while it's got a bunch of great new features, it's basically made Multi Processing unusable unless we're talking about the simplest of comps.   I'm working on my second short using AE as the total animation package, and render times for complicated 3D comps (NOT using ray tracing) have tripled.   MP used to take forever to spool up, but was fast once it got rolling.  Now, disabling MP gives me 3 or 4 times faster rendering, which is still MUCH slower than MP is CS5.5.  SOmething has deflineitly changed for the worse, as i'm using the same machine with the same settings and virtually the same comps.
I acutally just yesterday had two animators quit on my because they couldn't meet their deadlines.
I think After Effects is the hydra of programs.  They kill one feature and two more fill its place.  Unfortuanly we traded functional Multi-processing for falloff lighting and etc...  The puppet tool was it 3 version of after effects before it was stable.  I'm hoping we don't have to wait til CS7 for MP to sort itself out.
I really don't understand the "deal with it" aspect of the posters here.  Surely a functional program that delivers on it's promises is the goal of this forum.  We're not asking it to make us a sandwich.

  • Brush and smudge tools painfully slow in CS5

I use CS5 on quad core 2.26ghz macpro with 32 gb RAM.  It's a clean system, both cs5 and os10.6.6 updated.  No extra plug-ins or fonts.   I do have an extra video card installed for my raid 5 system.   Only use photoshop on this computer.   Using the healing brush or smudge tool is painfully slow.  also moving layers around are slow.   I work on 10-15GB files.   My assistant works on my old G5 with 8gb of ram and since it's not an intel he's still working in CS2.   Using the healing brush on a 4GB file is faster on the G5 in CS2 than on my Quadcore in CS5.  What is going on here?  how can I speed things up?
I have cache levels set to 7, cache tile sice to 1024.

i have found that any mac pro i use - not all set up the same- if they have a nvidia card after a few hours of working there will be a slowdown of painting, cloning, smudging and screen redraw. I always have open gl off. adobe engineers have been helping now and then but no one has a solution. on the windows forum someone reportedly adjusted their video card settings to fix it. but on a mac we have to option to do that - that i know of. it is a big problem for me when using CS5 that I use CS3 when possible.

  • Painfully slow startup - any suggestions how to make it faster?

    Hi Everyone,
Just thought I'd ask people - my 17" iMac G5 1.9GHz PowerPC with 512MB ram is painfully slow at start-up. Seems to take forever! Does anyone know how I could clear a lot of rubbish from my computer and someone make it faster.
Would anyone recommend a complete re-install - would that improve speed?
    Any help appreciated, cheers,
    Mark

Mark, you can clear space on your drive and speed it up by moving a lot of sound and video files to a DVD, or even better, to an external; Firewire drive that you can partition and also use as a clone boot disk.
Go through your applications folder and look for stuff that you never use, then get AppZapper to remove all traces of them. You can also use Monolingual to remove the tons of extra languages installed with Word and OS X, just make sure you uncheck English and any other language you might use.
    Hope some of this helps,
    Miriam

  • Good Spec Mac Mini got painfully slow

    Hi All
Following reading posts on this forum, I have upgraded my 2011 Mac Mini from 4gb to 8gb Memory, but it is still painfully slow, with the spinning beach ball always in play.
I now have a Core i7, 2.7ghz Mac Mini, with 8GB DDR3 memory, 500 mb disc (with 300gb free), running OSX 10.9.1.  I run Microsoft office and Iphoto and thats pretty much it, but even using Iphoto can take seconds for ecah photo to move, and typing emails often means waiting for the text to catch up with my typing.
In my frustration I copied everything off, re formatted the hard disc, and re installed everything, but its still the same speed.  The Activity monitor shows very little CPU activity, although the memory shows as 7.87GB used out of 8GB, not sure if that is normal.
Any ideas would be really welcome, as its getting very frustrating to use, when I first purchased the MAC mini it was blindingly fast on everything.
    Thanks
    Martyn

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(($(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256)); o=$((o>=1024?o:0));  PN "Pageouts (MiB)"; s=( $(sar -u 1 10 | sed '$!d') ); [[ ${s[4]} -lt 90 ]] && o=$( printf 'User %s%%\t\tSystem %s%%' ${s[1]} ${s[3]} ) || o=; PR "Total CPU usage"; [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(ps acrx -o comm,ruid,%cpu | sed '2!d'); PR "Max %CPU by process (name, UID, %)"; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal. Please note:
☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output of both steps (unless you had to skip Step 2.) It's already in the Clipboard after you complete each step. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post what you see in the Terminal window. The output is copied automatically to the Clipboard.
☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply.

  • Accessing Windows file share painfully slow in OS X 10.8

    Hello!
I work with a company that has one Mac in the network - an iMac 12,2 running OS X 10.8.4.  The computer's user needs to work off of the server quite frequently - it's a Windows Server 2008 R2 server - particularly with shared files.  Problem is, when she goes to access the shared drives through the Finder, it is painfully slow.  It often takes 5-10 seconds just for a directory listing to show, and opening and manipulating files takes significantly longer.  I've tried a number of things to try to speed things up, most recently indexing the network drives she uses and installing a Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter to use instead of the regular wired network card.  That hasn't helped though.  Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so, how were you able to fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm sure there is a good reason, but why is the extends constraint necessary in the generics spec? For example: public class Foo <E extends Bar>instead of public class Foo <Bar>It seems to me that proper design would usually dictate that Bar be an ab
