Howto test new or modified network infrastructures with standardized testing methods?

Hi,
I'm sure many of you regularly do tests of new or modified network infrastructures before going live. And you developed detailed plans and schedules how to test, how I did too.
Does anybody know if there exist standardized testing methods for this cases?
Like recommendations how to check features, performance, hardware failures, convergence times, software updates, network management etc.?
Does Cisco offer information concerning that?
Especially for software testing there exist many methods to check if it's working properly, but for technical it infrastructures I did not find any informations.
Best Regards

I guess you are looking for something like this -
http://www.ciscopress.com/store/enterprise-network-testing-testing-throughout-the-network-9781587141270
should say I don't own the book or have ever read it.
I have never come across a set of standardised testing methods in the same way software has but that's is not particularly surprising when you consider networking as an industry is a long way behind other parts of IT in that respect.
We are all still using CLI for most of our jobs :-)
I suspect with SDN that there will be a far more extensive range of testing tools available in the long run but we aren't there yet.
Personally I do pretty much what you already have. When I was involved in design we had proof of concept labs where we could test it would actually work and which often fed back into the design.
Then we had to test it with the existing production environment to see how it impacted on what we already had.
If all that went well we then pretty much knew what tests we needed to run when we implemented it into production.

  • Using modem Sagem f@st 3464 (Scarlet One : vdsl   tv   VoIP   wi-fi) : impossible to create a new Wi-Fi network (2.4 or 5 GHz) ? Conflict with DHCP / NAT and so on. No answer from the Apple help desk, Air Port Utility 6.1 unusable (configuration = Win 7)

    Good afternoon,
My internet connection is delivered by a modem Sagem f@st 3464 (Scarlet One : vdsl   tv   VoIP   wi-fi), it's almost the same than a BBox-2 from Belgacom (software and configuration).
This modem has 4 ethernet port, 2 for TV, 2 for LAN, the WAN port is RJ-11 and the connection is a PPPoE (in fact, it's the Belgacom network). I also got a Wi-Fi 802.11g on it.
The main raison why I bought a TC is the dual Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (for 802.11n), especially for my MacBook Pro and my iPad 3.
First of all, can I do the following with my TC :
    1) connecting the TC using a ethernet cable from one of the two modem's LAN ports to the TC's WAN port
    2) create a new Wi-Fi network using the TC ?
Up to now, after 2 man days of configuration, my TC is connected to my existing LAN network, as a bridge, but there is no new Wi-Fi network.
The Airport Utility 6.1 "Wizard" is just un-usable and I need to use a Win 7 laptop in order to get access to all the configuration !
The standard manual is very poor.
Does someone already create a new Wi-Fi network using its TC connected by Ethernet on a modem/router device ? How do you set up the DHCP (and NAT) ? Which range did you use ?
    Sincerely yours,
    AVDB

This is easy enough to do..
Plug the TC directly into a computer.. without other connections to do the setup.
Using the newly installed 5.6 utility.
    Bridge the TC.
    Create a wireless network.
This is an older screen shot and I would set security to WPA2 Personal only not WPA/WPA2 Personal as shown above.
I do recommend you use wireless names that are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Update the TC..
Now plug it into the modem router.. it will be a part of the network without doing NAT and DHCP itself.. which you do not want.. that leads to double NAT issues.. but it is a WAP that provides access to devices on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands directly to the main router.

if i bought an iphone from New York, will it work with a moroccan network?

If it is locked, yes you will have to unlock it to use with a Moroccan
wireless network. Only the wireless provider to which an iPhone
    is locked can unlock it.
If you can get that far, what does it say when you look at Settings+>

  • Problems with new Bell/Telus Network in Canada

In Canada Bell and Telus turned on a new nation-wide 3G HSPA network a couple of days ago. This, of course, broadened the spectrum of iPhone service providers in the country to a grand total of 4.
However, the new network is, well, new, and that means there are bugs. Some of those bugs might be getting diagnosed as problems with the iPhone itself, as mine was. I'm wondering if anyone else has discovered any issues with their iPhones on the new Bell/Telus network in Canada. Reporting them here might help other users avoid a wild goose chase such as I spent the day on yesterday.
Here's my problem, summed up. I live in Whitehorse, Yukon. My iPhone thinks it's in Edmonton, Alberta. Rather, location services on my iPhone locates the device as being in Edmonton. So when I open the Maps app, it displays my location as Edmonton. In MobileMe's Find my iPhone it's the same story.
In Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars, when I create a new account that includes a calendar, such as MobileMe, the time zone settings default to Edmonton.
And under Settings>General>Date & Time, when I turn on Set Automatically, the iPhone defaults to the time zone that Edmonton is in (which is one hour ahead of Whitehorse).
I spent a few hours on Apple tech support yesterday, where they (not surprisingly) misdiagnosed the problem as being a faulty iPhone. But I have verified the problem is also exists on a second local iPhone, so it's clearly a network issue.
Anyone else having similar, or totally different, problems with the new network in Canada? Share them here!

    Hi,
I got my Telus iPhone on Nov 5...seemed to work fine that day. The next day, I got a message saying I had no data service because I had no data plan:-( When I contacted Telus they said indeed hey were going through growing pains . Tat problem was resolved later that day.
Today, November 8, I am having trouble texting... people are not getting my texts, at least not everyone is. The only one I have received is one from tech suport at elus. I suspect this is also a growing pain. Maybe we just have to wait it out. I am really excited to have an iPone, in any event.

  • Question on how networking works with new Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I have a question about how networking works with my new Macbook Pro. This is my first laptop so am new to mobile computing. I am about to configure it to replace my desktop which uses a wired DSL connection. Once I have my Macbook Pro configured to run off the DSL modem, what happens when I take this computer to a location that has ethernet? Will just plugging in the ethernet cable be enough to get on line? Or is there further configuration work that needs to be done?
I used a Windows laptop from work and all I had to do was plug it in to a hotel ethernet cable to get on line. However, this laptop was never configured to run on my DSL network so I am not certain if that makes things more complicated.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi
Your MacBook Pro should just work when plugged into an ethernet connection.
Just check something, Open Network Preferences, you can select it from the Airport icon in the menu bar.
In the left-hand pane click on Ethernet and just check that it is set to configure using DHCP in the right-hand pane, that's it.
So when you plug in the ethernet cable it will ask the router for an IP address and off you go.
I assume that any system you plug into will use DHCP rather than static IP addresses. If it is a static IP address, you will need to manually configure the ethernet settings by inputting the IP address and subnet mask info plus DNS servers.
Usually it is done with DHCP and you don't have to do a thing and likewise your home DSL is DHCP?
If not then you will have to change your settings, make a 'Hotel' setting which you can use when in hotels and keep your 'Home' set-up for when you are at home. In the pull down menu select Edit Locations to add new ones.

  • Networking issue with new Macbook - cannot get IP address from DHCP router

Hello all, I've seen this problem posted a few times and been having the same problem with my new aluminum MacBook. Here's the story:
When connecting to my network at home, I get the message "Airport has a self-assigned IP and may not be able to connect to the internet." I've been able to connect a few times, but anytime it sleeps or I shut down I have the same problem. When I'm out and about, it has no problem connecting to other networks.
On the network in which I cannot connect, there are 2 other macs and two PCs that do NOT have any problem connecting. Macs are all running 10.5.5.
Router in a 2Wire and uses DHCP. ISP is AT&T.
I've tried rebooting the router, manually assigned an IP address, restarting, updating software. Nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is kinda making me crazy.

    I've also tried:
    1) Creating a new location in network prefs.
    2) Zapping PRAM
    3) rebooting router many time.
    4) putting a $ in front of the hex password
    5) deleting all of the plists that I've seen recommended.
    6) Starting in safe mode
    7) Renewing IP
    8) Shutting off firewall

  • Older airport extreme base station as a network extender with new time capsule

I just bought a new time capsule (802.11ac). Can my older airport extreme base station (model A1143) be used as a network extender with it?

    Yes, although it maybe disappointing..
There are two kinds of extending.. wireless repeater type which is poorest as it has to transfer all packets in two steps instead of one.. hence will halve the speed.
Or using ethernet to the old extreme and set it in bridge.. You can then setup roaming network... this is much better.. but getting ethernet to the right place could be messy or expensive or both.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
wireless extend doco.. mind all of this is out of date.. the basics are correct.. the methods via the airport utility may be obsolete.

    Documentation has rather lagged lately.

  • "srvctl modify network" hangs forever (11.2)

    Hello,
Our sysadmins changed the NETMASK parameter in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<if-name> config file
(enlarged the possible addresses by switching from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0), then when browsing
thru notes 972500.1 and  276434.1 I found out that I only had to run
    srvctl modify network -k 1 -S <address>/255.255.254.0/<if name>
but when i ran this command it hanged - definitely. Never got my prompt back.
    We're running on RH 6.5.
So my admin rebooted both nodes of my cluster, and then when running
    srvctl config network
I saw the new value with the update (so the command hanged, but it didn't fail to carry out the change).
I would've preferred sparing my Grid and Oracle infrastructure this reboot of course.
Anybody ever experienced this before, and if yes, did you manage to solve this issue ?
(I do wonder where and why it got stuck like this and was, or appeared to be, 100% blocked)
    Thanks !

  • Can't network Mac with W7 Ultimate 64 bit (but W7Pro32 and WXP work)

    Hi all,
I posted a long (probably too long) issue recently but despite nearly 200 people viewing it, no-one offered a solution. So I am re-posting a shorter, clearer statement here but below I also enclose the long full diagnostic information (at the bottom).
At home we have 4 computers: a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.7, a Windows XP desktop machine, a Windows 7 Professional 32-bit laptop, and a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit workstation. As a result of my extensive experimentation and testing I found that:
    - Networking and sharing drives between the Macbook and the XP machine worked fine in both directions
    - Ditto for the Windows 7 Professional 32-bit laptop - everything "just worked" exactly as it should
    - However the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine simply would not work from the Mac to the PC (I was however able to access the PC from the Mac)
    - All PCs were of course able to inter-operate in both directions across the network with each other
My conclusion therefore is that the Mac is set up and working correctly, there are no connectivity problems, and almost certainly this is an issue relating either to 64-bit W7 (versus 32-bit) or it's an issue relating to "Ultimate" versus "Professional" (or both). I have not 'fiddled' with anything, the only setting changes made which could be considered low-level were the 'secpol' change on the W7x64 machine which I read in many posts might solve the issue (it didn't).
I am not a technical expert although I have some ancient history in the field. I just want it to work. Everything I read tells me that it should - now Windows and Mac both use SMB, etc etc. But it doesnt.
Absolutely desperate to get this solved quickly now. I would even happily have paid someone, but finding an expert in Switzerland who can come to the house, speak English fluently plus (of course) be fluent in Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Mac... it's proved to be a test too far. So if anyone out there can help... thank you in advance.

    ORIGINAL DIAGNOSTIC DETAILS
    CONCLUSIONS
There appears to be a fundamental compatibility problem between Mac OS X and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
The problem actually appears to have a degree of randomness / instability about it (see below when, during diagnostics, the workstation actually disappeared, then reappeared!).
I can only presume this issue relates in some way to the “enhancements” either related to Ultimate versus Professional, or to 64-bit versus 32-bit variants.
At the moment there is only one solution I am confident would work, which is to revert my workstation to 32-bit… however this is not an option for me as it would render around 21GB of RAM unusable and remove the whole raison-d’etre for purchasing a powerful workstation in the first place.
I am therefore stuck and in need of help!
    PRECONDITIONS
In all cases I am using connectivity between three different PCs and a Macbook Pro 2.53GHz Intel Core Duo, 4GB RAM, Mac OS X running version 10.7 (Lion). BTW I know Lion is new but it was exactly the same with 10.6.
I have three PCs: an XP Pro machine, a W7 Pro 32bit machine and a W7 Ult 64bit machine.
All three PCs are running the same antivirus and firewall (Norton Internet Security 2011), this was left ON for all tests on all machines.
I have already been through all the myriad of advise on this subject: as you can see from the below, file sharing etc has all been enabled. The “secpol” changes etc have also been made on the W7 Ult 64bit machine only (but these were only made because it didn’t work without the changes and everyone seemed to think this was needed).
All my Windows computers are configured to workgroup “WILF” and also set this Workgroup name on the Mac in the WINS settings dialogue. No homegroup exists on the network.
No other “tinkering” has taken place. Although I have some tech skills, I am just a bloke who wants to use his computers, not a computer genius. As such the Tosh laptop is pretty much fresh out of the box, the Mac has nothing non-standard and the only setting change is the WINS setting for the Workgroup name. The workstation is a little over a year old so but I have not poked around with anything deep inside it, so if there is anything wrong it should be superficial – the kind of thing a basic user could have changed by mistake and can easily be changed back.
    DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Connecting between Macbook and old Windows XP machine (XP Pro 2002 SP3):
    -        Open ‘Finder’ on Mac, PC immediately visible under ‘Shared’.
    -        From Mac: Single click on PC icon indicated “Connecting” then “Connect as Guest”, opens a list of all shared and public folders. Am able to copy files from Mac to PC, am able to copy files from PC to Mac.
    -        From PC: Opening “My Network Places” and clicking on “View Workgroup Computers” shows all my networked computers including the Mac, double-clicking the Macbook icon opens a list of all shared and public folders. Am able to copy files from Mac to PC, am able to copy files from PC to Mac.
    -        In short: this appears to work as it should.
    Connecting between Macbook and new Windows 7 machine (W7 Pro 32-bit 2009 edition, Tosh laptop w/ Intel Core i7 M620 @ 2.67GHz, 4GB RAM):
    -        Open ‘Finder’ on Mac, PC immediately visible under ‘Shared’.
    -        From Mac: Single click on PC icon indicated “Connecting” then “Connect as Guest”, opens a list of all shared and public folders. Am able to copy files from Mac to PC, am able to copy files from PC to Mac.
    -        From PC: Opening “Windows Explorer” and single-clicking on “Network” shows all my networked computers including the Mac. This time I decided to try logging into the Mac drives as me, rather than as a guest:
Double-clicking the Mac icon opens up the ID / Password dialogue box.
Inputting my correct username and password for the Mac immediately opened up all the folders on the Mac I have access to (the shared / public folders but also the folders for my login account on the Mac).
Am able to copy files from Mac to PC, am able to copy files from PC to Mac.
    -        In short: this appears to work as it should.
    Connecting between Macbook and fairly new Windows 7 workstation (W7 Ultimate 64-bit  2009 edition SP1, Supermicro workstation w/ 2 x Intel Xeon W5590 @ 3.33GHz, 24GB  RAM):
    -        Open ‘Finder’ on Mac, PC WAS INITALLY  immediately visible under ‘Shared’… however while carrying out the testing for the XP machine and the laptop, it has disappeared! The other two machines remain visible.
STOP PRESS: It reappeared… for how long, is anyone’s guess…
    -        From Mac: A single click on PC icon almost instantaneously indicates “Connection Failed”. Repeated attempts produce the exact same result. To verify the basics some elementary diagnostics:
Mac IP address 192.168.0.11 can be successfully pinged from the PC.
PC IP address 192.168.0.3 can be successfully pinged from the Mac.
From PC entering comment “ping MACBOOKPRO-598A” (the latter being the computer name of my Macbook) works successfully i.e. name resolved OK, no packet loss, 1ms round trip.
From Mac unable to run the reciprocal ping test for EITHER PC since I don’t know what to put into Ping to allow it to resolve the computer names.
However I note that all 3 Windows machines remain visible in the Finder, only the two which work (the XP machine and the W7 32bit laptop) have the “Eject” symbol next to them and they are still the only two which work both ways without problem.
In the Finder window after clicking on the PC icon in the left column, I get another instance of this icon in the next column with “Connect As” underneath and presently “Connection Failed”. If I click on “Connect As” I receive the error “There was a problem connecting to the server ‘alastair-ws’ (which is the PC name of the workstation).
Finally if I use the GO -> Connect to Server option in Finder, using SMB://alastair-ws I receive the same error as above. I get EXACTLY the same error if I use the IP address of the workstation 192.168.0.3 as above.
    -        From PC: Opening “Windows Explorer” and single-clicking on “Network” shows all my networked computers including the Mac. Again I decided to try logging into the Mac drives as me, rather than as a guest:
Double-clicking the Mac icon opens up the ID / Password dialogue box.
Inputting my correct username and password for the Mac immediately opened up all the folders on the Mac I have access to (the shared / public folders but also the folders for my login account on the Mac).
Am able to copy files from Mac to PC, although naturally not the other way around.
    -        Therefore the PC-to-Mac seems to work OK, but the Mac-to-PC does not no matter what I try, although the IP is visible and it’s clear the connectivity exists (or Mac copy onto PC would also not work).
    [END]

You can give this a try on your Ultimate machine.  While these are said to be for Vista, I used it on my Win 7 machine just fine and it fixed the problems I was having.  Hope it works for you.
The problem is that Vista, by default, will only use NTLMv2 for authentication, which is not supported by Mac OS X's Windows Sharing service.
The other problem is the Minimum Session Security for NTVLM SSP based Clients.
    To get around this:
    1.     In Vista, open the Control Panel
    2.     Switch to "Classic" view
    3.     Double-click Administration Tools
    4.     Double-click Local Security Policy
    5.     Or Secpol.msc
    6.     Expand "Local Policies" and select "Security Options"
    7.     Alternate : Type secpol.msc to get editor up then
    8.     Locate "Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level" in the list and double-click it.
    9.     Change the setting from "Send NTMLv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session if negotiated"
    10.     Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP Based (including secure RPC) Clients
    11.     Change the setting from "require 128 bit" to unchecked (No Minimum)
    12.     Click OK
the real difference between vista and windows 7 procedure is 10 and 11

  • How do you set up a new APTC wireless network to seamlessly replace an older APExt Base Station wireless network

I have an older Airport Extreme Base Station and it currently generates our existing wireless network.  I am interested in setting up a new 2TB Time Capsule. It seems as though the new TC would replace the older AP Ext Base Station in generating a new, higher performing wireless network, with the old AP Ext Base Station repurposed as a network extender out into the backyard where the current Wi Fi signal is weak.
Naturally, we have a lot of devices now using the existing wireless network.  Is it possible to set up the new wireless network with the new TC using the same name, password etc, as the existing wireless network, so we are not required to deal with all the devices, not to mention the group of visitors who connect when they are here. If so, how do I step through the process?  Can the older AP Ext base Station then be used to extend the new, same-named network?  Thank you for your help.

However, the Alert message I'm getting says that the content of the Time Capsules can't be modified. This is where  I run into trouble.
Click on the Time Capsule icon to reveal a folder representing the drive. Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop.
The first time that you do this, you may see a "Not Connected" message. Click on "Connect As" and enter the device password for the Time Capsule.
Then drag/drop files onto the drive icon on the desktop, or to the open window there.

  • What will be tomorrows network infrastructure?

Due to historical reasons, many different network infrastructures co-exist in today's networks, such as Ethernet, SONET, ATM, etc. However, if we are building a complete new infrastructure for a metro or large campus network, which technology would be the most appropriate? What is Cisco Expert’s opinion?

I would answer this question differently if I were considering the use of the network to be a service providers network or an enterprise network in that I could achieve a different cost model based on single versus multiple customers on the same networks. Also, the end needs of each customer are different, and if they were completely defined could lead to a different cost model for the services rendered.
Generally, a service providers network requires support for TDM and data protocols, requires stringent Service Level Agreements, and generally either owns their own or has a lower cost per mile for fiber than an enterprise. For this reason, a SONET/SDH based network with data capabilities provides the most cost effective way to transport the variety of circuits and streams from the end users location to the point-of-presence (POP) and a WDM system based network is used for the long haul and inter-POP traffic is used. Data can be Ethernet over SONET/SDH or WDM, or it can be done with RPR (802.17).
The enterprise is usually seen as more fiber constrained, and therefore uses a metro WDM (Coarse or Dense) to transport SAN and Ethernet connections between buildings. The ability for the enterprise to convert most legacy traffic into Ethernet, and the ability to combine Ethernet ports into ever-larger trunk speeds, can also lead to very cost effective Ethernet over dark fiber networks up to the new 10 Gigabit per second standard. RPR systems can also be used to extend SONET/SDH recovery mechanisms to Layer 2 and 3 networks.
With voice and video moving to native IP, and the ability to tunnel most other legacy traffic over IP, Metro Ethernet systems over dark fiber, or extended over WDM or SONET/SDH systems are beginning to be the most cost effective way for businesses to connect within the campus or metro today.
The question we have to ask whenever we build a network is what will the next 10 years bring us. My vision is one of lots of devices with wireless mobility, the mixing of SIP and HTTP services to the mobile devices, and lots of high speed Global Area Networking overhead to figure out who and where you are. What is your vision of the traffic and protocols you will be required to support in ten years?

  • Field Test Mode disabled cell network

So I was playing around with Field Test Mode today trying different bands and settings with LTE trying to get 4G to work on my Lumia 820 (I'm stuck on Edge - I have i Wireless which uses T-Mobile network I believe). Nothing was working so I tried to set it all back to the way it was before but now I have no cell coverage. Just a circle/slash over the bars. When I reboot I get a message that says the network I selected isn't available and asks me to choose another. When I choose Search Networks, I get a list that includes AT&T, Verizon, "311580", and search again.
Who can help me undo what I did to get i Wireless to show up again?

EBSkater, do you think this is the way AnandTech got their i4 to display the db signal? They didn't detail their "trick".

When you're in field test mode, you hold the power key until the "Slide to Power Off" shows up. Now hold the home button until it resprings. You will now ALWAYS have the dB meter, even through updates. The only way to remove it is to restore as a new phone.
If you get an upgraded phone model and restore it with a backup from one of these phones that have the dB meter, you will transfer the dB meter to it.
