HP 1160 printer and HP newer printers and print queues

FYI. The HP 1160 printer does not support queue based printing.
We use Novell 5, IPX, and print queues. Our company has always been HP
LaserJet printers based. They have been very reliable and only recently did
we need to replace one. We have small workgroups so lighter duty printers
have been fine and the 1160 seemed comparable to others we still use. Until
we just purchased the 1160 all previous HP printers had supported Novell
print queues. Hp tech support said it was a Novell issue..(typical cop out).
Any input on what new HP printers actually support Queue based printing
would be appreciated. Nothing on their web site actually indicates this
support (or lack of it).
Thanks
Terry B

You can always use external jet directs if necessary.
Additionally, if they support LPR, you can use PrintQs via NDPS.
( No NDPS support required on the client side.)

    Hi to the Mac Folks,
I have 10.6.8 and have installed two new printers HP 8610 and an Epson 7880 and can not find the Page Set-up menu anywhere in the applications I a trying to print from. This is regardless of either printer selected.
I primarily print photos from Photoshop CS5.  The term Page Set-up has gone missing in the file pull down menu. Can't make any choices  There are no page sizes, paper types, appearsto be locked on a 13x19 size paper format. Either being too large or too small.
Saw a 2008 locked issue about this however none of the help fit my situation, options discussed are not available to me.
Preview has no "Page Setup" - or does it?
Does the constant struggle with computer compatability weirdness issues ever end or is it a enslavement scheme?

    Hey,
if you know the name(s) of the root folder(s) you want to access (eg. by making a note on the Windows side) then you can make them appear by just doing Shift-Command-G in Finder ("Go to Folder…"), and entering the full path to the required folders.  You can then navigate all the contents as normal.

I have a G4 with OSX 10.2 and my printer died.  New printers only seem to work with 10.4.11 and newer - can I upgrade my G4 enough to use a new printer?

    Aha!
Well in outer Mongolia ASAP means something totally different and involves weaving tent fabric from camel hair so that has taken me a bit of time....  However if you have the patience of a saint and the compassion of Mother Theresas' more helpful sister then....
So it would appear I have the following supersonics:
    OSX 10.2.1
    60 Gb HD
    G4 dual processor 1GHz
Now the critical issue here is that I get the computer up to speed enough to be compatible with a modern photo printer - which I think needs to be 10.4.11 or even 10.5
Any assistance would be most gratefully and humbly recieved.

  • Why is my HP Deskjet 970C  Print Queue Status  "Stopped" and won't change?

I recently installed 10.5 Leopard. Hooked up my old HP-970C Deskjet. Used the link: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/foomatic to get the new HP Driver as recommended. Set up printer with this driver.
Each time the print command is given (Word Doc or .pdf file) nothing happens. The job is shown in the Print Queue with the Status says "Stopped." Clicking the resume button does not start the printer. Twice more and I get a message that says "Operation Could not be completed. client-error-not-possible."
Any thoughts on how to work around this?
Tried the six steps listed at: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01462601&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us &lang=en&softwareitem=bi-54970-4&os=219&rule=5837&product=3435684
Even those great steps did not help. Any other ideas? Thanks!!!

The short answer is that you have an older HP printer, and have just been bitten by HP's abandonment of older printers on both Leopard and Vista.
The foomatic drivers should work, though; I used foomatic drivers on my old HP MFD for years. They gave better output than the ones HP shipped, and actually worked in Leopard. I put the HP onto a machine running XP because scanning didn't work anymore on either Vista or Leopard and HP had no intention of fixing it.
When I see the error you quoted, there are usually three possible causes:
1 the printer itself has a hardware problem. The fix for that is to buy a new printer, it's not economic to repair a DJ970.
2 the HP drivers are present on the system and are interfering. The fix for that is to remove the HP drivers and just have the foomatic drivers installed.
3 the USB cable is bad or loose. The fix for that is to get a new USB cable and make sure that it is securely plugged in.

  • Print Queue suddenly stopped: OS X 10.4.10 and Bonjour via AirPort

I've been using an Intel iMac with no problems for many months: 2 printers attached: 1 inkjet via USB, and 1 HPLJ1200 via Bonjour through Airport/USB.
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R2218),
    Kernel Version: Darwin 8.10.1
Suddenly, the Bonjour one has stopped. One minute it's printing, next minute, all jobs go into a queue but never emerge. The printer queue shows in the dock with a red "!" with all jobs in that queue stopped. If I restart the queue, it just tries to restart (green) then reverts to red "!" again. The direct USB printer continues to work fine. Problem is confined to the Bonjour printer.
    I've tried:
    1. Checking all the cables etc. Turning everything off, then one by one on. Restarting iMac, etc.
And then (after a few experiences of others on the Forums):
    2. Verifying and fixing permissions via Disk Utility (there were no problems to fix)
    3. Uninstalling the HPLJ, and then reinstalling.
    4. Installing a 2nd instance of the HPLJ to bypass the first instance (which has a little grey "!" next to it in the Print dialogue box)
    All to no avail.
    I've then tried:
    5. OnyX, running maintenance scripts, cleaning caches.
    Still no good.
    6. Finally, I've looked into the CUPS Error Log via OnyX, and I can see a number of Errors (see transcript at end of this email). I have removed the HPLJ from the printer setup, then reinstalled it. The CUPS Error Log for this is shown below, from removal, to reinstallation.
Is there a Unix or OSX expert in the forum who can help please?
    Many thanks
    LeslieB

    Dear All
I have been able to partially solve this problem myself.
I've managed to track the problem down to the Apple Airport Express (which is hosting the USB printer via Bonjour). The problem seems to be that the iMac can't see the printer, even thought it's connected.
It turns out that the problem started at the time of an internet outage, and the iMac can't seem to find the printer since that time (even though Bonjour is working fine).
I've tried resetting the Airport Express, and even upgrading the firmware, but no luck so far.
I'll close this posting, and put a new one in the Airport Express Forum.
many thanks to those who viewed this in the interim.

  • Rights needed to manage and create print queues

On a Netware 5.1 install with eDir 8733, what rights would I need to give a
user so that this person would be able to create new print queues, print
servers, and print objects? This person is not an admin and I prefer not
making him an admin equivalent if at all possible.
Also, on a side note, how do I create a new print queue/server/printer
without using HP Jet Admin for an HP printer? Has anyone done this with out
    Jet Admin?
    Thank you

Oh, but how do I link them to the MAC of the printers NIC?
Isn't that what HP JetAdmin did for me?
    Thanks

  • Print queues and ou's

I have most of my users for my office in my NYCNY container. One of those
users is a help desk technician that we don't want to give admin rights to,
however we want him to be able to create print queues, servers, and
    printers.
So my thought is to make an OU=PRINTER inside the NYCNY OU. I will then
give that tech full rights to the OU and public has browse rights. He has
no trouble creating the print objects, and in each queue he just has to put
the NYCNY container into the users list.
Does anyone see a problem with this? Should it work? Is there a better
    way?
I'm having some issues but before I go any further I wanted to know if my
thinking so far is correct. This is NW51 sp7 eDir 8733.
    Thanks

Well, when i install the printer he set up on a windows xp workstation it
doesn't print. When you open the properties of the printer and look at the
ports, there are two created. One called \\tree\printer_name the other
\\tree\printer_name.printer.nycny Just very strange. But I haven't look at
how he's setting up the printer yet, I know it's jetadmin that's about all.
And everytime he opens nwadmin he blue screens....which is in the realm of
bizarre. That's all I know so far, I can post back with more info this
afternoon after I look into it a bit.
    Thanks though!

  • Cannot clear a document from printer queue, and it is preventing printing, i have rebooted

    HP G72 notebook printer
Wifi networked to Lexmark Pro 205 printer
I have a document which is stuck in the print queue and will not cancel and remove. I have rebooted the computer three times, the printer three times and the network. It is blocking printing by the printer.
How do I remove and clear the queue?

Hi this might work as well
    1. Click start and go to the control panel and next go to printers.
    2. Doubleclick your printer icon.
    3. In the new screen click on the word printer in the top left corner en set a check mark with "use printer offline".
    4. Disconnect the unit from the computer.
    5. Click on the word printer again in the top left corner and choose "cancel all printjobs". Wait until this happens.
    6. If this not happens restart your computer and check if the printjob is gone now. If it does happen skip step 6.
    7. If the printjob is gone reconnect your printer and click printer in the top left corner again and remove the check mark with "use printer offline".
    8. Try printing.

    Thanks,

I have the same printer, P1005, and hae been using it with Tiger (PPC), Leopard (PPC and intel), snow Leopard and Lion. What I do know is that it DOES HAVE print bugs in Tiger and, perhaps, Leopard, I had to ALWAYS manually delete print jobs after EVERY print as system did not clean memory. I reported this to Apple, but it seems to be a printer driver issue, unsolved by HP. It was solved in subsequent systems. So, my suggestion is to upgrade to Snow Leopard at least, as you have a core 2 duo 2006 MB, or directly to Lion as most recent, and best fit with printer drivers. You must put at least 2 GB of memory for SL and Lion, best is 4 GB (your model may support 3 GB only if the first core 2 duo series).
Until then, clean printing system by clicking minus button in sys prefs/print.
download last HP printer driver for Tiger, check with their site
install driver or reinstall, even if installed
    put printer back again
If it continues to behave as described, then you must delete every print job after completion or upgrade to at least SL. Many say SL is best for that generation, me included. But you must not share this opinion, of course.

  • Trying to get Photoshop CS4 functional with Mavericks and an Epson 3880 printer. CS4 fails to send a file to the print queue. Have reinstalled the Epson 3880 driver for Mavericks. All looks good but no file is sent.

rying to get Photoshop CS4 functional with Mavericks and an Epson 3880 printer. CS4 fails to send a file to the print queue. Have reinstalled the Epson 3880 driver for Mavericks. All looks good but no file is sent.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

What EXACT version of Photoshop CS4 are you running?  You should be on Photoshop CS4 v 11.0.2.
Also run Apple's software update to see whether it offers you the latest Epson update:
    Printer Driver v9.33
Epson Stylus Pro 3880, Drivers & Downloads - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc.
MOST IMPORTANTLY:  have Photoshop re-create its own Preferences:
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Note: If this process doesn't work for you while you're using a wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard, attach a wired keyboard and retry.
Important: If you re-create the preferences by manually deleting the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings file, make sure that you only delete that file. If you delete the entire settings folder, you also delete any unsaved actions or presets.
Reinstalling Photoshop does not remove the preferences file. Before reinstalling Photoshop, re-create your preferences.
NEW Video! Julieanne Kost created a video that takes you through two ways of resetting your Photoshop preferences. The manual preference file removal method is between 0:00 - 5:05. The keyboard shortcut method is between 5:05 - 8:18. The video is located here:
How to Reset Photoshop CS6’s Preferences File | The Complete Picture with Julieanne Kost | Adobe TV
    Mac OS
Important: Apple made the user library folder hidden by default with the release of Mac OS X 10.7. If  you require access to files in the hidden library folder to perform Adobe-related troubleshooting, see How to access hidden user library files.

  • Print queue doesn't open (and preference button doesn't work either)

Okay, this has been my only problem since upgrading to Leopard and it's kind of annoying. For some reason I have not been able to get my print queues to ever open up since upgrading. I have three printers currently installed:
    • Apple LaserWriter 16/600 (via local network)
    • Brother MFC-3220C (USB)
    • Dymo LabelWriter Twin Turbo (USB)
After printing I have yet to see the print queue come up for any of the printers. Also, if I go in to the System Preferences and click on the "Open Print Queue" button nothing happens whatsoever--no message, no window, nothing. I have tried resetting the print system and that has also had no effect on the problem. I have tried this on all of my printers and it just does not work correctly. I have also tried deleting the printers and re-adding them as well as fixing permissions, neither of which solved the problem.
If anyone has any insight in to why this is happening or what I can do to fix the problem, please let me know, I would like to be able to use the print queues again. Thank you!

The printer preferences are stores in <home>/Library/Preferences, and they are the com.apple.print files. You could throw those away and see if things improve. Also, does this happen with all the printers? If so, and your printers are easy to re-add, you could go to <home>/Library/Printers and delete the printers there and then re-add them. When going to <home>/Library/Printers, you could see if double-clicking on the printers there launches the proxy.
Thanks for the information, however I finally found out what the problem was. After looking at it deeper, it appears that I had some weird owners & groups for a bunch of my user files which must have been causing the problems. Even though it was permissions related, Repair Permissions in Disk Utility wasn't catching the bad permissions or solving the issue, I had to hit all of my folders and files with chown and chmod in terminal to force change the owners and permissions. After doing all of that, I FINALLY have working print monitors...YES! So, in other words, if anyone else experiences this problem (I'm not sure why they would) please feel free to ask me how I finally solved it for a more in depth explanation.

  • Hp photosmart C7280 says "stopped" in print queue and won't print!

I just bought an hp photosmart C7280 today. It was a pretty simple setup with the actual printer and network and all. i download the updated driver from the hp website and all seemed kosher there too. now i click "print" and on the print queue page it says "stopped" and won't print!
ahhh please help? is this a good printer with macs anyways? it seemed kinda loud during the setup...

I too have gone through most of the problems described here but have finally been able to get the c7280 working properly, yet I'm still not very happy with the solution.
For connectivity reasons, I wanted to connect the aio to my network via ethernet cable directly to my router. While my computers will access the network wirelessly, I wanted the printer to have a solid connection. Unfortunately, I was never (and still can't) get it to work properly using this connection. What finally did work was using the wireless connection in the printer to connect to the network.
Why this would work wirelessly and not while directly connected is something no one has been able to explain. I still have the printer right next to my wireless router to interference doesn't seem to be a problem and it seems fast enough, but the fact that I can't get it working properly with a "less technically challenged" method, really bothers me. What if I didn't have a wireless network? While wireless is great, if there was an easy solution to have all my desktops connected via ethernet, I'd prefer it (easy being not having a bunch a cables around and perhaps a pre-wired network in my home!)
Anyway, I hope everyone who has this machine gets the problem worked out. Unfortunately, knowing what I know now, I don't think I would buy this one again unless the software was rock solid. Physically the unit works well, but is a little loud I admit and went through my black cartridge pretty fast even though I used in saving settings such as fast draft, etc.
Just as a side note, the HP support guy in Canada was fairly annoying. When we still couldn't get it working properly via ethernet, he insisted it must be a problem with Apple or a conflict with a program I have installed, etc, etc. and told me that every one of his customers that has Leopard also has this unit working 100% properly. I politely told him he needs to add me as his first failure!
OK, enough rant. Try connecting wirelessly and see if that works. I would uninstall the current printers as suggested, but also clear out the printer cache. Do this by right clicking in the add a printer box area and choose reset printing system. If all else fails and you upgraded to Leopard from Tiger, then......gulp...... uninstall Leopard and revert back to Tiger. Under Tiger, both my macs worked perfectly connected via ethernet printer connection. Good luck.

  • Where is the printer queue stored - and how to delete all queue jobs?

I ran into a problem after I installed the Roll paper feeder on my Epson R1800. All of a sudden files will not print anymore.
One thing that may cause a problem is that there are two previous files (pdf I think) that someone else tried to print yesterday looking for a different printer on regular Letter size paper that are still in the queue because they did not print successfully. Everytime I tell Photoshop to print my photo on the Roll paper, those two old jobs pop back up on the printer queue gui and the system stops saying "wrong paper type for this job". Then I delete those two old jobs so there is only the Roll paper one left but it just sits there and wont print. When I launch the utility to check is all is kosher, sometimes it will give me the ink cartridge levels without a problem but sometimes it claims a communication error. I have re-checked the connection and everything and all is OK. When I launch the printer utility and tell it to print a Nozzle Check test, it prints it without a problem so there really is no prob with the communication.
When I restart the computer and the printer and try again, the two old jobs that I deleted in the previous step always reappear. So I wonder if, those two pdf jobs are kinda screwing with the system and should be deleted. But as i said, everytime I delete them, they look like they disappear from the list but my photo job just sits there on the queue without printing. The jobs are not stopped and there is no Hold on this one. If I quit and re-launch the print job, the old ones re-appear in the queue. So they must be stored someplace and are not deleting correctly. Does anyone know where this cue file is stored and what it is called? I have looked in Application Support and in Preferences but I can't see anything that looks like it.
I have downloaded the drivers from Epson for this printer again but that doesn't do anything either. I am using 10.4.11 on an 24 inch iMac intel 2.4Ghz. I only use the stock Apple utilities, no funky third party addon except for the Epson drivers. The printer utilities are:
    Epson Printer Utility v3.01
    Stylus R1800 utility v4.7(161.10)
    Thank you for any help.
    Bo

Hooray, we found the problem! BOO, we already found the problem elsewhere!
Sooo, it seems we have some kind of Permission problem, have you Repaired Permissions ad rebooted?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Or we could maybe go back to that window, click on Printers, remove it? (Thinking perhaps the jobs will go away with the printer!?)

Let me start by saying that I have had this problem intermittently on my own computer, and now my mother has it on hers. My computer is wicked fast and loaded, hers is a basic iMac17" G4. I strongly suspect that the problem only occurs with Appleworks, but I may be wrong.
So the problem is this. When I try to print, the item goes to the print queue, and then the job stops. The printer icon shows up in the dock with a red exclamation point. The job stays in the queue. In the printer queue dialog box, you can click on the "start jobs" icon, and the icon will change to the "stop jobs" icon..... but within seconds the icon will revert back to saying "start Jobs."
At this point, I have a problem that is hard to eliminate. Cleaning out the queue is not enough to make the computer behave. I do a variety of things like a restart, unplugging the usb, unplugging the power cord to the printer, etc. Eventually things get better, and I am never sure what thing I did fixed it.
This has happened only rarely on my computer, so I have not gotten too excited. But it is chronic on my Mom's, so I spent hours doing varouis disk fixing programs and dumping the printers preference files and making sure she has the latest driver (it is an Epson C88). None of that works. (incidentally, I have various printers, including an Epson R320, not sure it that printer is always the culprit on my computer).
I thought I had her problem solved when I made her go to the Page Setup dialog every time and make sure her Epson printer is selected there before printing. But today she said the problem reoccured, even doing as I suggested.
She can print from every other program. She can print to PDF and open that PDF in Preview and print from that. But that is an awkward workaround for an older woman who is scared of her computer to begin with.
So... any ideas. I scoured this forum and couldn't find anything that I hadn 't already tried

    Peter,
More a guess than anything else, but I'd suspect a corrupted preferences file.
See Peggy's tip "AppleWorks has stopped working correctly" here:
