  • MSATA ssd - pavilion 15-n209tx - worth it?

I have hp pavilion 15 notebook (model no.f6c49pa) with 1tb hdd, Intel 4200u chip, upgraded ram to 8gb ddr3l 1600.
Could anyone kindly try to advice me regarding the 24gb mSATA ssd upgradation that is indicated possible in the user manual for my product.
I have few doubts regarding this:
    1) what is the difference between normal ssd and this one?
    2) will it in reality bring about noticeable change in the performance of the system following upgradation?
    3) for what aspect in the system is msata ssd actually helping?
    4) can i use this ssd for solely booting my windows 8.1 os or it can just be used as to speed up normal functioning?
5)I'm residing in India, could you help me find it from online stores available - eBay.in, amazon.in, flipkart.com, hponline store India etc..?
    6) Is it really worth the upgradation?
    thanks for the help

You can call them and see if they will do it but usually they do warranty repair. This is not a repair but an upgrade and they are just not in that business. Any decent computer shop can do the work. If HP will do it, they would charge a very high price for it.

  • Can't Upgrade Lenovo Yoga 11s mSATA SSD

I recently purchased a refurbished Lenovo Yoga 11s from Tiger Direct along with an 8 GB RAM upgrade and a 480 GB Crucial mSATA SSD.  The RAM replacement was easy.  However, I have tried for three weeks to clone, reinstall, or recover my OS installation to the new SSD, and everything has failed.  I’ve done extensive research on this forum and others but can’t find a solution.
The 11s came with Windows 8 on a 128 GB mSATA SSD.  I updated it to 8.1 and installed a bunch of my own apps before attempting the clone.  The 480 GB Crucial SSD definitely works.  I have an external USB enclosure and when it’s inserted it reads just fine on multiple machines.  I disabled Fast Boot and Secure Boot and have experimented with both Legacy and UEFI boot modes.
    Here’s what I’ve tried:
    1. Cloning via Easeus Todo Backup directly through Windows 8.  The clone appeared to be successful but the new drive wouldn’t boot.  I tried boot repair using both a Lenovo and a standard Windows Recovery USB that I made before beginning all of this.  In each case Startup Repair says it can’t find the required partition.  Also, the BIOS doesn’t recognize the new SSD when I have a Recovery USB inserted.
    2. Cloning by booting directly to a Clonezilla Live USB.  Again, the clone appeared successful but after swapping the SSDs the new one wouldn’t boot, and both Recovery USBs wouldn’t work.
    3. Cloning AGAIN by booting directly to Clonezilla Live USB, this time with the new SSD attached to the mobo and the original in the USB enclosure.  In this attempt, Clonezilla only recognized the 128 GB SSD and didn’t recognize the 480 attached to the mobo. (Although I don't think I'd partitioned the new SSD in this attempt, so maybe that would change things?)
    4. Cloning via Paragon’s “Migrate OS”.  I had high hopes for this because others have reported good results.  Again, the clone appears successful but after swapping it won’t boot. And I did check the “create UEFI boot” option on Paragon.
    5. In desperation, I “borrowed” a copy of Windows 8 on a USB to see if I could do a fresh installation, since apparently you can’t just easily reinstall Win8 on an OEM machine.  I’m at the point where I’d pay for a Win8 license just to have my own copy and avoid this OEM nonsense—but I want to be sure it would work on this SSD first.  However, the copy I was using won’t install because it doesn’t recognize the new SSD.  If I put the BIOS into Legacy Boot mode, it will recognize the Win8 USB but not the new mSATA drive.  If I put it into UEFI it recognizes the mSATA drive but won’t recognize the USB.
I’m at my wit’s end here.  Clearly other people have successfully upgraded their 11s machines (like this guy: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Lenovo-Yoga-11s-SSD-and-RAM-Upgrade-Great-Results/td-p/1195545)  Maybe the 11s motherboard won’t accept a 480 GB SSD?  Or maybe it’s just strangely incompatible with this particular model?  (This is what I’m using: http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT480M500SSD3) Is there something else painfully obvious I’m missing?
Please help!  I love this little machine but if I can’t get the SSD upgraded it’s going to find another home.

    Moderator note: Crucial link fixed.

That's EXACTLY what it is. I originally bought an ivy bridge 11s and I went ahead and tried the new drive in it and it worked just fine. I have also been posting in another forum...here's my last post: I think I figured it out...  I have another Yoga 11s here beside me, the Ivy Bridge version; the bios in that machine sees the ssd just fine. The difference is the bios versions.  The one that won't see it is 8FCN19WW(V1.00)-the haswell 11s. The one that WILL see it is 77CN19WW(V1.05). So now I'm trying to fig out how to get that V1.00 bios updated to V1.05. That's the only thing I can think of to do. Keep you posted... So, I guess I have to choose between the haswell processor or larger ssd. I can always just switch the gray covers for the orange cause I'm liking the orange WAY better. TBH, I'm not really seeing a big diff between the ivy bridge and haswell anyway...  I only got about 4.5 hrs battery life, which is what I got with the IB. There was also supposed to be a better wireless card but the reception and speed is the same as well. I may just end up keeping the Ivy Bridge because of the better bios. There is absolutely no way to update the bios in either of these machines so we're basically just stuck with what we get. If you DO like the 11s as much as I do, you can always find an Ivy Bridge model and is should work just fine for you. The Micro Center here in town is selling IB refurbs for $499. Probably the same price online. Write more later...

  • New Model: HP Envy 15t Upgrade HD to SSD or mSATA SSD?

    Hello Everyone,
I have been reading several threads on upgrading the HDD to SSD and it seems like everyone has been successful in doing so.  My question is, is there a benefit to upgrade the HDD to a SSD or to just add in mSATA SSD?  I currently have a networked drive that holds most of my data such as music, pictures, and videos so I do not believe I need more capacity on my hard drive.  With that being said, I planned on buying a 256/240GB SSD drive, it is just a matter of which one do I purchase? a regular SSD or mSATA SSD?  Thoughts?  Comments?  Concerns?
    Mike Lee
on a side note:  I have the new Envy 15t...I really wished they would have changed the model name to something completely different since the prefix is the same as their old model...stupid....

Get a regular 2.5 inch SATA SSD. Very slightly slower than an mSSD but still way faster than anything else. Trying to configure the mSSD as boot drive is a huge hassle.

    I have a envy 14 2050se, can i upgrade intel 310 msata ssd 80gb like the envy 14 2160se version?

    Yes, you can.
You will need to purchase a Solid-state drive connector board (includes cable:  For use only with computer models not equipped with an mSATA solid-state drive)

  • Samsung PM841 mSATA SSD 128GB upgrade to 256GB or 512GB

Does the Split 13t-m000 CTO x2 PC support a larger mSATA SSD than 128GB? 256GB and 512GB PM841 mSATA drives are available, but not listed on the HP Parts List.

  • T430s upgrading from HDD with 16G mSATA SSD to primary SSD - what to do with mSATA SSD

    Hi all,
I am going to install a Samsung 840 pro 256G SSD to replace my HDD that came with my T430s.  It also came with a 16G mSATA SSD "cache" drive.  Once I install the primary 256G SSD, I think the mSATA SSD will be useless and only going to cause trouble.
My question is, can I just remove it at the same time as I swap the HDD and SSD or will that cause problems? Are there proper steps to follow in this situation? Will any info be lost if I just take it out?.....I figure not since it is just a "cache" drive which is not supposed to really store any  files.
    thanks,
    Dan
btw - my overall impression is that this mSATA "cache" thing has been basically useless and a waste of money.

My 16GB SanDisk U100 is giving a SMART error as noted by a variety of tools (Crystal Disk, SanDisk SSD Toolkit, Lenovo's boot diagnostics), and is failing and useless. I was thinking of replacing, but I have a couple of questions:
Will ExpressCache work just as effectively if I get a 32GB mSATA and partition out 16GB for caching and the rest of data?
Are bus transfer speeds any different if on mSATA vs. internal HD port? Meaning is internal HD on a faster bus configuration than mSATA?
I also wonder by OP thought ExpressCache was useless. I also like the idea of getting a large mSATA such as lead_org mentions, but I wonder if it is more cost effective to just get a single 1TB internal HD with hybrid SSD technology...

  • How to find out if my system allows for a SSD upgrade

    Hi,
I've X1 Carbon that was bought in last december. It says type 3444 - 9FU.
I've only 180 GB, I want to know if I could upgrade this to 512GB or more if possible?
How do I find out if my system will allow this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!

    Hi,
X1C model (not the new one, 2014 Gen 2) utilizes Lenovo proprietary connector for SSD drive, named SFF, Small Form Factor. So it's very difficult to find out compatible drive on the market for upgrade except of the purchase it from Lenovo.
Lenovo x1c drives p/n (FRU) are:
    45N8303 - SSD 256GB 3.7mmH Toshiba SFF Panther-256
    45N8423 - SSD 240GB FDE 3.7mmH Intel SFF Cherry Crest-240 FDE
    45N8483 - SSD 256GB 3.7mmH SanDisk SFF X100-256
X1C model also supports (PSREF and Lenovo support site mentiones about that capability) halfsized msata SSD in mini pci-e formfactor. Find it on the market and install yourself in addition to your existing SSD. Be attentive, halfsize (not fullsize), mini pci-e (not m.2), msata (not pci). Lenovo doesn't provide p/ns for that msata SSD.
    x220 | i5-2520m | Intel ssd 320 series | Gobi 2000 3G GPS | WiFi
    x220 | i5-2520m | hdd 320 | Intel msata ssd 310 series | 3G GPS | WiFi

  • MSI GE70 Apache Pro 0-61 msata SSD

    Hello guyz,
I have recently ordered the above mentioned MSI laptop. As it does not come with an ssd. So i thought of adding one to it. After searching google i found that an msata ssd can be added to this model. I wanted to confirm here on the official msi forum. I am thinking of buying a Samsung Evo 840 msata ssd 250gb for this upgrade. Can you please confirm will this ssd be compatible with this laptop model ? and is it ok if i install a new OS (windows 8.1) on the new ssd for booting purpose and not deleting the old OS. Lastly please do confirm if the laptop has an extra msata ssd slot . As i have still not received the laptop so thought of ordering an msata to use it with. Waiting for your replies Thankyou

The GE70 should come with 2 mSATA sockets (I believe), assuming that there is none installed already.
Yes, the Samsung 840 EVO should work fine. (95% sure about that)
I would use the MSI Burn Recovery disks that you NEED TO MAKE when you first setup your notebook (I HIGHLY SUGGEST MAKING THESE) to reinstall Windows onto the SSD. I would remove your OLD HDD and install the SSD and then use those recovery disks to install the OS.

  • MSi GT70 Dragon edition 2 SSD UPGRADE

    hi
I want to upgrade my ssd I only have 128g
I want to buy some 512gb msata but how many can I fit in this laptop
and I would like to use them with super raid 2
    is that possible ?
and what kind of msata do you suggest ?
    money not an issue

The first thing you need to figure out is if you have the SuperRaid adapter.
    I'm guessing you probably do.
I would take the bottom panel off your laptop and see what it looks like. You should find an adapter in the one slot and there will most likely only be a single mSATA SSD. You can either add another 128 gb mSATA SSD and raid them, or replace both of them.

  • MSI GT70 0ND-492 - 128GB SSD upgrade question

    Hey everyone,
I'm a proud new owner of a GT70! Now one thing I've noticed on this laptop is that the stock 128GB drive is far too small. After everything is said and done, you have about 43 GB's of space that you ca actually use.
My question is  this, can this MSATA be upgraded and replaced? Also, is there two MSATA slots on this laptop or just one?
    Thanks everyone!!

    Quote from: Torelli88 on 11-February-13, 13:27:31
Perfect compliment? Is that implying that we can have 2 mSATA's hooked into this laptop?
If you have the 'superraid' option, then yes. It really depends though. My laptop came with a single 128 gb mSATA. Others might come with 2 x 64GB mSATA SSD's. So it really depends entirely on the configuration. I think they switched to using mostly 128GB mSATA SSD's, but I could be wrong.

  • S430 mSATA SSD and Dual Boot

Yesterday my Lenovo Thinkpad S430 arrived, I have some questions concerning dual booting Linux and Win 8 from the mSATA. I have a Crucial m4 128Gb with the current firmware 07MH which I want to want to install instead of the 16Gb mSATA SSD which is currently used for caching.
For that I want to do a clean Win 8 install (I got the ISO and a valid serial) and presumably an current Ubuntu. Unfortunately I have no experience with UEFI and Secure Boot and that stuff. Is there anything I need to do, are there any problems with what I want to do?
The current UEFI BIOS on my S430 is the GAET71WW (2.07), should I upgrade it to the current 2.54?
Is there anything else I should know?
    Regards and thank you,
    meruah

If I'm reading Hemanth Kumar's post correctly, 16GB is the largest mSATA drive provided by and supported by Lenovo for use as a cache.
I'd expect that you can use most any capacity mSATA drive in that slot for a primary OS drive.  It is frequently done with Lenovo laptops to install a large mSATA SSD - as I did in my T420, 256GB - and keep the HDD as a data drive.
That said, I don't have specific experience with your machine.  It would be great if someone with specific experience would join the conversation.  Otherwise, I can only say it's probably OK.

  • Split x2 SSD upgrade

Is it possible to upgrade the 128GB SSD in the Split x2? I would like to increase the storage size.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
It's an mSATA SSD, if out of warranty, you can upgrade to a larger capacity SSD at your own risk. Please check the following book:

  • SSD Upgrade Compatibility

Hi there, I am using HP ENVY 4-1101sa which has 500gb of hardrive in it. I want to upgrade it to SSD.  I upgraded 120gb SSD Sandisk Ultra II, but i guess it has some compatibility issues, like blue screen death (Crictical Process Died) It rebot automatically n I am fed up with it.  Sometomes even it never show the hardrive sometime says Operating System not found etc etc than I have to rebot several times than it detect the opearting system n hardrive as well Can anyone tell me which SSD hardrive should I buy in 120gb so that these issues should not appear again. or this model has issues with SSD? Thanks

HI, Thanks for reply,  I am trying many option that may fit. Firstly I thought my new ScaDisk SSD Ultra II is not compitable with msata, first i intsalled OS on msata ssd it installed all well but some time my other SSD not showing or detected if I restart my pc few times than it does but this problem occurs frequently. Than I unplugged mSATA SSD & installed OS on my new Hardisk SSD. It installed all well but I face new blue screen death on Windows 8.0 DPC watch Dog Violation.  I searched it online many people saying it might be the compability of SSD.  So I am quite frustated with. Before insatlling SSD the previous HDD 500gb was working fine.  Can be this issue of SSD compability? Can be the issue of two SSD ? Can it be difference of SSD brand? My SSD has the latest firmware updated. I have also updated all the drivers as well because few people write on different forums that it might be graphic card drivers as well so I updated all the drivers as well. I would be very greatful to u If you could help me in this matter. ThanksHuffer wrote:
Do you have the mSATA mSSD drive installed? See page 48 of your Manual here: Service Manual If so what have you done with it and how did you handle it during OS installation onto the SSD? I recommend at least a 250 gig SSD and I recommend a Samsung Evo 850 but they do make a 120 gig version of it that I would install if I did not wish to install anything larger.

  • Tecra R840 installing mSata SSD in position of 3G module

    Hello,
i have a Tecra R840-110 model, there is also 3G module inside, i would like to install the mSata SSD in the pcie slot.
Is possible to use the mSata SSD in the pcie slot instead of 3G module?
    Thank you for your help!

I think something like this is not possible. Mainboard ports are not some kind of flexible ports.
In the past Toshiba has offered second HDD upgrade in place of optical disc drive using special adapter.
