HP 550 Laptop Overheating

Hi, I currently have overheating issues with my HP 550, when i had bought this laptop gushes of air used to come out of the side air vents, but know theres hardly any air coming out, the fan usally comes on at the logon prompt with an AC Adapter, but when im on battery it comes on when i spend more than 10 mins on the computer, the fan temps reach up to 100 Degrees. Any help would be appreciated!
By the way my warranty is expired.
Computer Specs:
Intel Celeron 530 @ 1.73Ghz
1 GB RAM (1014MB due to memory allocation)
111 GB Hard drive
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3

I have a similar problem, so I hope someone can help.
My temperature doesn't quite get to 100º, but when I am doing something a bit intensive the fan kicks in and the computer sounds like it's taxiing for takeoff. I imagine the fan / CPU / heatsink are clogged with dust as the air flow is pretty pathetic. Therefore I decided to get in and clean it.
I've seen the instructions for removing the keyboard and switch cover on the HP website but I hit a problem. I can get as far as loosening the back edge of the switch cover but my cover doesn't slide off effortlessly like in the video. I've applied as much force as I dare but it really feels as if something is holding it. I can lift the back edge by about 15º and that's it.
Can anyone offer advice on how to get the switch cover off? Or an alternative way to get in to clean the fan and CPU?
Thanks in anticipation.

  • HP 550 laptop recovery

I would like to know the steps to take when i want to recover my hp 550 laptop from a recovery partition.

Try marking the Recovery partition as Active...if it is available as option, sometimes is ,sometimes not.
1.Right-click on "Computer" icon and select manage.
2.This will launch the Microsoft Management Console.
3.On the left side of the MMC, click on "Disk Management" and it will show you all of the partitions.
4.Right-click on the "HP Recovery" partition and select "Mark as Active Partition."
5.When the warning prompt appears, select "Yes" - Reboot and it will automatically boot into the Recovery Manager (without pressing F11).

  • Laptop Overheating

My laptop is a Hp envy m6-1105dx notebook pc, Windows 8.1, beats audio and AMD Vision A10. I have had my laptop over a year and just recently ha it started overheating. I need my laptop for work. I am an insurance agent.  I have coolsense and it seems to work wose now too. My drivers are up to date, including coolsense. I want to know what could be causing this, from what i see the vents seem relatively clear. My laptop is not under warranty.

    Hi Kwildinsurance,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP ENVY m6-1105dx  Notebook and issues with overheating and coolsense. Here is a link to overheating as this might be the cause of the shutting down. If the Notebook has dust on the fans it could be overheating. If that does not help at the end of this document it shows you to do a hardware test. The final thing you should try is to restore BIOS default settings.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Dv7-3085dx Laptop Overheating

Bought this system at Bestbuy 2 weeks ago.  Core i7 processor and Win7.  Been running great, today while on but not running any programs it got very hot. I was just realizing it was running hot when it automatically shut down and gave a warming that the Bios detected overheating.  I left it down for 2 hours then booted it up.  Within 10 minutes it was hot again (fans are working).  I rebooted and now it seems OK but I'm not sure.  I have run this new laptop for hours every night and had no issues until today.  Only other problem I have had is the volume slider would stop working periodically.  Anyone else had overheating issues with this model?
    thanks

My screen display has stopped working.
I can here the fans and all the lights are on, but no display.  I was watching a lot of video via netflix projected to a Sony Bravia when it froze.  I think it's been running hot but I have not recieved any bios warnings.  It has blue sceened on me once (Not connected to the Sony).
I've had it for about 3 weeks orderd from this place:
    http://www.ecomelectronics.com
I have to call them in the morning to start I guess.  It came with back up disks created by Geek Squad.  Hopefully buying form this vendor won't be an issue.

  • The disk Local Disc(C:) has errors, hp 550 laptop

Hi hp.....I use hp 550 and Windows Vista Home Basic. When i try to Back Up, it starts normally and then finally, it says me " the back up did not complete successfully. An error occurred and the following information might help you resolve the error. CATASTROPHIC FAILURE (Ox 8000FFFF) " and also when i try to restore also, it says me that " the disk Local Disk (C has errors. Windows has detected file system corruption on local disk(C and you must check the disk for errors before it can be restored"  and when i try to check the disk error too, it offcourse checks but it can't fix the problem… This all the problem i have. Thanks in advance for all your concerns to help me solve my problems.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP 550 Notebook and getting the CATASTROPHIC FAILURE Ox 8000FFFF. To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums.
    You could try-
    Restart your computer
Press F8 before the Windows logo appears
Select Repair your computer and press Enter
Select Repair Startup Problems and press Enter
Once the process is completed, restart you computer.
You might want to run a hardware test F2 at startup.

  • Dell laptop overheating?

I have a dell inspiron 1545 and i've been having issues with it overheating.
I've only had it since June 2009.
I have a laptop desk thing that is suppose to keep it ventilated but it still keeps overheating and a few times it has completely shut off.
There doesn't seem to be any dust or anything blocking the vent.
Is there anything I can do to stop it or should I take it to get it checked out?
Does the geek squad black tie protection cover this.

First, what make/model cooler are you using?  I'm asking because I'd like to see the design.
Secondly, you can open the unit and blow out the dust using some compressed air if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • Laptop Overheating too much

Why is my laptop consistently over heating? How do I stop this from happening?

    Hi caranetta:
    Thank you for your inquiry.
I understand that your computer is overheating.
Overheating is usually caused by decreased air flow which does not allow it to cool properly as well as other issues
I am sending you a link to a You Tube Video on "How to service HP DV7 for overheating" that I think you might find informative. click here.
This is not a HP  recommended  video.
There are many more videos  on the  computer overheating if you would like to check it out.
It that is not the issue please reply back for further assistance.

  • HP 550 Battery no longer recognized. Suspect hardware failure.

    1. HP 550 Laptop (4GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo).
    2. Windows 7 64-bit
    3. No error messages.
    4. See description.
A couple of months ago, I trod on the power jack of my laptop's power supply, so as a temporary fix I went to the electronics shop, found a plug that was roughly the same size, and soldered it onto the end (this is the bit that plugs into the actual laptop, not into the wall socket).
All was fine and dandy for a while, then the battery stopped charging, and stopped providing power to the computer as well (although it did still show what charge was left in it in the system notification tray). I figured my foolish quick-fix had probably damaged the battery, so I removed it altogether and bought a new one, along with a new power supply.
However, the laptop no longer recognizes any battery - neither the old one, nor the new one. It doesn't even detect that any battery is there, it doesn't charge it, and it doesn't use battery power at all - it has to remain plugged in at all times.
I assume that my non-standard plug has somehow fried the part of the laptop that connects to the battery. Any suggestions what might have happened? What part would I need to replace?
    Best regards,
    Caspian

Yes you take a bit of a risk by playing Dr. Frankenstein and trying to make non-standard parts for a laptop. Here is the Service Manual:
    http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01627018/c01627018.pdf
In your case, the dc jack is soldered to the motherboard so you either have to solder a new jack in place or get a new motherboard. I would say that there is a high likelihood you need the whole motherboard.

  • 550 series problems display vs Linux (Ubuntu)

I am having a lenovo Y 550 laptop with nVidia GeForce 240 M graphics card in it and I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I installed the graphics card driver version 190.42 from nvidia web site. I had a problem in the beginning. There in my laptop it showed 6 mini screen with same content at the same time. On searching I found out that in X configuration file we need to place -> Option "ModeValidation" "NoTotalsizecheck" in the Device section. I had done that and after reboot I found that the 6 mini screen problem gone. But after logout/stand by/switching to text terminal the screen gets flickery/fuzzy. I am not able to read/see anything clearly. I have found out so many queries about this problem in net; but sadly didn't find a solution. I am attaching my x configuration file with this. Thanking you in advance.

  • Overheating laptop

Hello, my laptop: CQ60-420sa keeps overheating and switching itself off.  Is there anythign I can do to stop this.  It is on Windows Vista (which came with the laptop).

It is a SMART Error, and it indicates that the HDD is faulty.
You can find more information on SMART errors here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology
I would recommend you replacing your HDD on your unit.

  • Laptop gets overheating

My laptop is HP Envy m6 1105dx, it's a good computer, but it has some serious problems that make me very angry.
First, when I play games, default buttons are useless, and I have to assign functions to others.
Second, when I play Wing of Prey, it often shut down unnoticedly. The power button, wifi button still light, the caps lock button also work, but the screen goes dark and no thing else work.
Third, since some days ago, it have shut down because of overheating many times, although I have just bought it for 5 months, it gets 90 degree!

I saw your post and forwarded it to the right people a for their review. You should hear back from someone shortly via private message on this Forum.

  • Laptop will not start up?! (HP 550)

Hi my computer is about 4 or 3 years old, at one time the charger was in the computer and then the charger stopped working and it didnt work anymore, luckily I had another charger which worked for a few months but that also broke :/.. so I couldnt do anything about it so I left my laptop in the closet for about 6 months now and I decided to try and get it to work again, I did that hard reset thing (you know take out battery, hold down power button etc.) and when I insert the charger it goes goes blue light then white light and then blank, and when I press the power button the ac adapter light blinks 8 times? What could this mean?

I suggest that you consider purchasing another power adapter if you want to get the notebook working.
Purchase one that is either the correct HP model or otherwise guaranteed to be compatible with your notebook.
All power adapters are not the same. Do be aware that some produce AC voltage output and that is definitely not what your notebook needs.
Do yourself a favor and do not use the PS/2 adapter as it is absolutely not meant to be used  with your HP notebook.
