HP 5520 NOT PRINTING

My relatively new HP 5520 is not printing. I have replaced the ink which were getting low but did not neccassarily need to be changed and still no joy. A test page will print but not any documents ! Have tried everything reinstalling etc etc when i go to print something nothing comes up. Can anyone help?

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @Hol92
I read your post, and if I understand correctly, you can print out test pages fine from your Photosmart 5520 printer however, cannot print from your computer. I saw that you've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer, to no avail.
I have some questions and some things for you to try.
How is the printer connected (USB/ wireless/ wired/ Bluetooth)?
What is the Operating System of the computer?
Have you tried printing from different programs, and can you print from any of them?
When you ran the installation, did it complete successfully, or did you notice any errors, etc?
Try a power reset, and firmware update in the meantime.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Ensure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help greatly.

  • Photosmart 5520 not printing black

As with many others here, my HP Photosmart 5520 is not printing in black.  Have gone through all the HP troubleshooting, as well as the steps on the forums, short of disassembling and removing the print head.
Replaced the print cartridge twice with genuine HP 564 and HP 564XL, checked the cartridge vents, and have run the clean printer head clean utilities 10x, including turning off, waiting several hours, and going through the process again.    It still won't print black, and the print quality diagnostic "black" box is completely blank, or has a few faint gray lines.
Printer warranty expired 1/2014.  Was a HP customer for life, but now am very frustrated.  This is the second HP printer in a row that has failed soon after the warranty expired, and with the exact same problem.  My printer's info is below.  I am in Beaverton, Oregon, USA
The following information was returned for your product
Serial number [edited Serial Number by Moderator] Product number CX042A Warranty status Warranty has expired Warranty end date 2014-01-17 (YYYY-MM-DD)

    Hello @GeoffWampler,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 5520, you are unable to print in black ink.
You have exhausted the steps here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, with no success.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. I highly recommend you call our technical support at 800-474-6836, I trust they will be able to assist you regardless of the warranty status. • Photosmart 5520 not printing borderless

Hi,I have a Photosmart 5520 printer and use Mac computers (and sometimes ipads/iphones). One of the features of this printer that led to me buying it is that it is meant to have borderless printing. Most of my printing is done from MS Word. Although the printer is meant to be borderless, if I have Word documents with headers/footers, they always get cut off. There is at least a good centimetre or two of white border around the documents that I print. This is very annoying if I have spent a long time formatting a document assuming that there will be no borders! Can someone tell me how I am meant to print borderlessly? I am assuming that it is just a setting somewhere that I am missing but I cannot find it! Is this something that I will have to set up on all devices that use the printer? Or can I somehow make it a setting on the actual printer so that everything sent to it prints borderlessly? Thanks

The Photosmart 5520 (and other HP printers) can print borderless, but with a few cavaets: Borderless printing is only enabled when printing on photo paper.  (Plain paper would cockle if printed to the edge, this would cause jamming.)When printing borderless the print is oversized by a few percent to make sure that the image prints without leaving any white space if the media is printed skewed.  Borderless printing (and photo media selection) are not compatible with two-sided printing.

  • HP Photosmart 5520 Not Printing Black; I'm Out $58.99 For HP Ink Cartridges I Can't Use

So after my printer stopped printing in black ink, I came to the forums to research the problem. I tried all of the recommended/suggested "fixes" to no avail. Upon realizing that this is a known issue with these printers, and after speaking with an HP tech via phone who informed me that the printer is broken, I spent the rest of my morning trying to get someone at HP to please compensate me for the $58.99 that I spent on the HP ink cartridges that I can no longer use or return --  it was only after I installed the new cartridges that I learned that the printer is broken -- toward the purchase of another HP printer. (I was perfectly willing to buy another HP printer because the 5220 has been fine for us.)
The best they could offer me was $17 off a $99 replacement printer that is *not* compatible with the new ink cartridges that I currently have. So, according to my math, that would be $58.99 + $82 = $140.99 to be able to print again.
Not exactly a great deal, IMHO.
Very disappointed with HP customer service.  Will not be purchasing any more HP products.

I have an HP Photosmart 5520 all in one printer and a MacBook Pro. Bought the MacBook Pro in Jan 2013 and the printer in Dec 2012. I was able to print to the wireless printer up until June 2013. • Photosmart 5520 - Black not printing on some things

My 5520 has been fitted with new cartridges and all work except the black.  Strangely, black (or at least grey) writing prints on the quality/print report and the cartridge shows as full when this is checked by the on screen request.  However, the print report has a completely blank rectangle under the 'black' heading.  I have followed all the usual steps but I am confused as to why I get black printing but no black on pictures.

HI , Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you're unable to print black on your HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer. I will certainly do my best to help you. I would try the steps within this guide, Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart 5520 and Deskjet Ink Advantage 5520 e-All-in-One Printer Series.  Solution one: Use genuine HP ink cartridges HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink cartridges or refilled HP ink cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP ink cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve print quality issues.Visit HP SureSupply to check ink cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement ink cartridges.Go to the HP SureSupply website.Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then make sure the country/region location is correct.Follow the on-screen instructions to order new ink cartridges or check ink cartridge compatibility with your printer.Genuine HP ink cartridges can also be purchased from other retailers. Solution two: Check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty ink cartridgesLow ink can contribute to poor print quality. Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels, and then replace any low or empty ink cartridges. Step 1: Check the estimated ink levelsFollow these steps to check the estimated ink levels. From the home screen of the printer control panel, touch the Ink icon (). The current ink levels display.Figure : Example of estimated ink levels NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low-ink levels, consider having a replacement ink cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace ink cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable. If none of the cartridges are low on ink, you do not need to replace them yet. Continue to the next solution. If any of the cartridges are low on ink, continue to the next step to replace them.Step 2: Replace any low or empty ink cartridgesFollow these steps to replace any low or empty ink cartridges.Video of replacing the ink cartridges The following video demonstrates how to replace a cartridge.  If you have trouble viewing the video or to view the video in a different size, click here to play the video on YouTube. If the product is off, press the Power button () to turn on the product. Otherwise, ink might leak from the cartridge. When you remove the plastic wrap, the paper label on the top of the cartridge tears slightly, which is necessary to vent the cartridge.Remove the orange cap from the cartridge. Twist the cap counter-clockwise until it snaps off.Figure : Remove the orange cap from the cartridgeWith the nozzle and the contacts facing down, push the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the cartridge until it is firmly seated. Make sure that the color icon on the cartridge label matches the color icon on the slot.Figure : Insert the cartridgeRepeat these steps to insert the other cartridges.Close the cartridge access door.Figure : Close the cartridge access doorStep 3: Align the printer Follow these steps to align the printer using the control panel. From the home screen, touch the Setup icon (), and then touch Tools.Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Align Printer. The printer will align automatically. Press OK to continue.Solution three: Make sure that the ink cartridges are properly vented and seated correctlyIf the vent on the top of the ink cartridge is clogged or obstructed, the ink cartridge might not work properly. Follow these steps to make sure that the ink cartridges are properly vented and seated correctly.Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Run your finger along the top of the cartridges to feel for any that are protruding, and if any are, press down firmly until each cartridge snaps into place.Close the cartridge access door.Figure : Close the cartridge access doorTry the print job again.Solution four: Clean the printheadFollow these steps to use an automated tool to clean the printhead.Make sure that plain white U.S. letter or A4 size paper is loaded in the tray. From the control panel home screen, touch the Settings icon (), and then touch Tools.Touch the Down Arrow (), and then touch Clean Printhead. The product cleans the printheads, and then prints a test page.Review the print quality on the test page.Figure : Example of the printhead cleaning test pageIf the print quality on the test page is satisfactory, return to the current print job.If the print quality on the test page is unsatisfactory, perform a secondary cleaning of the printhead. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again. NOTE:  Never turn off the printer when ink cartridges are missing. Make sure that you replace any missing ink cartridges as soon as possible to avoid print quality issues and possible extra ink usage or damage to the ink system. To avoid issues that require cleaning the printhead, always turn the printer off with the Power button on the printer itself.Solution five: Service the printer Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific. If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers. NOTE: Keep a print sample that shows the problem. If the ink cartridges, printhead, or printer is replaced under warranty, the support agent will request the print sample. If the printer is returned to HP, the print sample must be returned with the printer. Place the sample in the output tray when you package your printer for shipping. What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
    Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your
    contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone
    number
Case number and phone number appear. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

  • 5520 Windows7 - Black ink not printing AGAIN!

This is the 2nd HP home printer that this has happened too.  It works fine until the ink gets low.  Buy new ink.  All colors and black.  Black does not print.  VERY FRUSTRATED because I am trying to print off info for my daughters college applications, etc.  The first printer that I had did this very same thing.  DIfferent model.  I finally spoke with someone on the phone and then sent this one as a replacement.  I have tried all the online trouble shooting steps with no results.  I can't beleive these printers do this.  Must be some type of mfg defect after they print for a while.  I would really appreciate an HP person to call me on my cell: [Edited for Personal Information] so  I can get this going.  I can't buy another printer at this time.  Of course it is just out of warrenty.  Assistance is needed please. Thank you for your help and I can only help I get the type of service I received last time this happened.  That is what kept me with HP.

There a few things to check.  I would suggest going through the troubleshooting steps in the document here, be sure to check the vents as shown in solution three..

  • Not printing the whole page

the printer is not printing the whole page it is cutting the right side
    hp photosmart 7520

My HP Photosmart model 5520 is only printing part of a page.

  • HP 5510 wireless printer - will not print

This printer was hardly used.  A message came on that said "black ink was low".  I  purchased new HP black ink
and still it will not print.  I removed the remaining cartridges and wiped with alcohol and dry clean cotton rag.
I noticed that the yellow ink when I touched it with the rag did not expel as much ink as the red, blue and black.
Could that be the reason why this is not printing.  The printer goes through all the motions and works fine, but
all the paper comes out blank.  I have been on several times with HP technicians and spent 4 hrs. on Thursday
which was ridiculous - a big waste of time going through processes that I had done several days before.  The printer
is still in warranty and Hewlett Packard offered a reconditioned Model which I really dont want.  I don't want
someone else's headache.  They want this one back and I haven't decided fully.  They offered 5520 and others
where I would have to pay between $79 to $89.  I have come to the conclusion why have a warranty or insurance. I dont feel like sending this back and have been trying to solve the problem.  One technician said it was a malfunction and another said it was a problem with the printer head.  I wasted my money and would like to try a different brand,
but what.  I have always used HP photosmart printers, but I paid $350 for HP 5180 or 5280 which had a
big problem later with the ink cartridges and I have HP 6280 and I love the photo that prints out.  I paid a good
sum of money for those two and wanted a wireless.  This has caused me so much aggravation especially dealing
with HP technicians from all over the world.  They don't know anymore than I do.  I have been using printers
for over 15 yrs.  I dislike dealing with HP personel.  I give them a 0.

I would take a reconditioned product over a new replacement any day.  The reconditioned product has been verified to have a problem, taken apart by a technician, verified the defective part, replaced defective part (which will never fail again) and put back together and tested more extensively than a new unit.  New unit... put together by an assembly person, press self test and ship it out.
Say thanks by clicking the Kudos Thumbs Up to the right in the post.
