HP 650 Notebook, Win 8 64bit, Won't boot after HP attempted update?

I have had this laptop for about 2 months, and today it just froze when I was opening my browser.  It hung for like 10 minutes with no message, I had a cursor but clicking it anywhere on the desktop did not do anything.  Mousing over the sides of the screen did not slide out the Win 8 menus etc.  So I was in a hurry and held the power button down for 2 seconds until it clicked off.  Then powered on again.  (I have done this a thousand times with Win XP/Vista/7, when they hang for whatever reason.)  Upon powering on, the little 'busy' circle was going forever without bringing up the login screen.  No message, no error, no indication it was updating anything, etc.   Win 8 has done that to me before on this laptop, and i just power down and start again and it normally comes up.  So after another 5 minutes of nothing I forced it down and tried to bring it back up again.  This time I got a message saying "Applying Updates (100%)..." and it sat there for another long time, this time I waited at least 10 minutes again.  The 100% never changed - there was no moving bar - and no other messages of any kind.
It finally blanked the screen to black and said it could not boot and I need to install an operating system.
Nice.
I booted again, and it said that Windows needs to be repaired, so insert my disks etc.  But I never had any disks when I got this laptop from tigerdirect.com.  I found my order Invoice, with a serial number, and I have my HP Registration email.  I responded to that email to ask for help, but do not know if that is monitored or not.  tigerdirect does not provide technical support - it has to come from HP.
I googled instructions for creating a Win 8 install disk to repair the boot record, and I could do that IF ONLY I knew what my Win 8 product license ID was!  Win 8 was pre-installed, and I can't find anything with the Win 8 license on it!  So I cannot get Win 8 even for a boot disk, if I don't have the license #.
Is there someplace online here that could take my laptop serial #, and tell me what Win 8 license was pre-installed on my laptop????  That would help me out a LOT.  I personally am DONE with windows, but its my wife's laptop, so I have to try and get it fixed for her.  :-/
thx,
sw

  • Problem with HP Media Centre M7670.UK-a - won't boot after installing an update to Apple Quicktime

I just installed the latest update to Apple Quicktime (after an update message appeared on the screen). When asked if I wanted to re-boot the PC now, I clicked on Yes.
Now the computer won't boot. The power light comes on, then the disk drive light flashes for a moment, then nothing else happens and the PC starts to beep. The beeps are repeating, with 2 short beeps and one long beep. What do the beeps mean?
    This question was solved.

Then a  clear CMOS would be the next logical troubleshooting step.
Here is  a link to your motherboard specifications.
The information on clearing CMOS is at the bottom of the document.
This is usually the last step before giving up on a motherboard.
The problem you are facing is motherboard hardware firmware related.

  • Macbook won't boot after installing Security Update 2008-007 (Intel)

I installed security update 2008-007 (intel) on my MacBook last night using Software Update, but now my machine won't boot at all. All I get is the gray start-up screen with the dark gray apple, but there's no spinning progress bar or anything. After 5 minutes or so, the machine auto-restarts, but again hangs on the gray start-up screen. It does this over and over again until I shut it off. I tried to boot into safe mode by holding down shift right after the chime, but it still wouldn't boot (again, not even a spinning progress bar). Can anyone please help me? I really don't want to lose my photos/movies, etc. I'll backup everything promptly if I can just get it to boot. Thanks.

Hi jared-lee, and again, a warm welcome to the forums!
First for safety, "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

This may or may not fix the problem, but may.

  • HELP: T440s won't boot after unsuccessful memory update

I have a T440s that came with 4GB RAM. Purchased a G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB DDR3L 1600 SO-DIMM (1.35v, PC3-12800, 11-11-11-28) from Newegg and installed in T440s. I did disable the internal battery from BIOS before installed the memory. However, I found my T440s won't even boot. I then tried the memory chip in two other laptops and found this SO-DIMM is defective so it's on the way back to Newegg.
Now my big problem is that my T440s won't boot anymore even with original configurations. Push the power button, there is no response from T440s. However, I do observed LEDs blink. When only use battery, then LEDs give one short blink every few seconds. LEDs will give four short blinks every few seconds if I plug in the wall power supply.
Did I kill my T440s ? Any way that can wake it up or I just need to contact Lenovo for warranty service?
Any help/suggestion is appreciated. Thanks a lot.
    Jon

  • Satellite A40-231 won't boot after wrong firmware update

    Hi,
i own a toshiba satellite a40-231.it won't boot anymore because i have flashed it's dvd-rw drive(sdr-6112) with the wrong firmware and i also made a big mistake making a non-bootable active dos partition, trying to flash the correct firmware. So, my question is: can i boot from usb flash disk?i believe it's the only option i have left, if not network boot.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
As far as I know its not possible to boot from any other devices as from USB FDD / HDD / CD-ROM / LAN
You could boot from network but if you want to install the OS via LAN you will need an RIS server. But its not very easy to do it without any additional experience. So I think this option is nothing for you.
It seems the drive is dead or malfunctions and therefore the best idea is to replace the device drive. I know, its hard to hear that but I dont see any other solution

  • Toshiba won't boot after Toshiba BIOS update

My Satellite P755 would not boot immediately after I did the updates that the Toshiba update software recommended I do.  It still would not boot after going through the entire recovery process.  At this point I'm thinking it must be a hardware failure so I called toshiba.
They told me it would be $49.99 for telephone tech support to fix the issue but that would be refunded if it was determined to be a hardware issue.  The tech had me unplug the power, remove the battery and hold the power button down for 30 seconds (apparently this must remove the incorrect bios update or something).  After putting the battery back and plugging back in the recovery process worked and it now boots again.
I'm happy this worked but a little frustrated that I paid $49.99 to fix an issue that was not caused by me, it was caused by the Toshiba update software suggesting and installing an incorrect BIOS update, which was confirmed by the technician that I spoke with.  After talking to a rep and a supervisor I was denied a refund.  I've lost time, money, and data over this issue.
The tech also told me I should call Toshiba anytime I update software to make sure it will work with my computer, even if it's an update recommended by the Toshiba update software.

Thanks to the original poster. I bought a laptop and I did the Bio update.  I had an issue on my old laptop and i took out the power supply and that worked.
Now with this one after the update it would not turn on or do anything. I could not get to the bios or nothing as it was dead for the most part. It would trun on for a few seconds and I panicked as this is a lot of money to spend of a dead computer.
I have limited income and I was beside myself. I thought after taking the battery out and putting it back it continued to do it that it was dead.  I picked me up and did a search on the web and eventually found this thread.  I did what the oriingal poster did. I think leaving the battery out so it resets is the primary issue. I did both the on button in case. Yeah I know it don't make sense but I did it.
It is now working. It booted up and I am playing a CD in it.
My other laptop basically in direcly was stolen. Well not quite. I loaned it to my son and the car he had it in got impounded. I had my info on it so it could be returned but it was never retruned.  I would like it back as it was realiable but it had the same issue to turn on at one point. Battery taken out fixed it.
I don't think I am going to do any more bios updates on it.  I hope there is no more of them.  I am not sure if it will shut off and power up right but since it is working now for the last five minutes It is ok. I am playing a CD on it.
thanks to the poster of this thread.  You save me and my laptop. I love it.
I did read bad reviews of it as well as good.  It is companies are doing anything to make a profit.  It is why I stand for the resource based economy where planned obsolence will be history.
    HUGS TO YOU GUYS.

  • Win 7 won't boot after successful (?) install

    Hi Group,
Tried searching the forums for this problem and found similar postings but I think my problem is different...
I've successfuly installed Win 7 Ultimate x86 in that I get to the point of entering product key, etc. but when it does the final reboot I just get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Tried some of the workarounds like clearing the pram/smc, deleting the ati driver .sys file (which doesn't seem to exist actually) and also using the driver autounattend from the usb drive. I'm running the latest version of boot camp.
Not sure what to try next. I've been successful installing this version of windows in VMWare and on a fujitsu-siemens laptop without any issues. I've also been successful at installing Xp via bootcamp. Really at a loss as to what to try next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

*Take an iMac and Windows 7 Blue screen fun*
the final part of the Win 7 install and Mr Blue screen due to the Nividia driver supplied on Win 7 DVD kills iMac GT7300
    1. Install... and Blue screen!
2.Re-boot but from the Win 7 install disk – seems to work if you hold alt on boot up and select the disk to boot from!
3.When you get into the Windows installer, click past the language selection. Then click "Repair your computer".
4.Windows will scan for installations and prompt you with a list. Select your "C" drive and click Next.
5.You should be presented with a windows titled *System Recovery Options*.
At the bottom of this list you should see +Command Prompt+.
    Select the command prompt.
6.When the console opens, you can delete the offending driver using the following command:
    DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\NVLDDMKM.SYS
7.Close the command prompt window and click the Restart button.
This time, boot from your hard disk.
You will complete the install with no Blue screen.
Having done this go to the Nivida web site and download the GT 7 series drivers for Windows 7.
    Install, re-boot and ...
+*... install Bootcamp drivers and right off your back to Blue Screen...*+
Repeat 1-7 and install newly downloaded drivers and off you go

  • Win 7 won't boot after installing R&R 4.3...urgent help needed!

    Hi everyone,
I'd be really thankful if anyone could help me with this problem. I've got an R61i and I'm running Windows 7 Professional. Got all the latest drivers and I recently installed the new Lenovo Toolbox. After installing the toolbox it recommended that I install Rescue and Recovery 4.3, so I installed it. Then I did a backup on an external harddrive and protected it with a password. After all that was done I installed some new Windows Updates and restarted the Thinkpad for the first time after the backup. All of the sudden whenever Windows is booting it also loads R&R. I've tried different boot-up options with F12 on startup...nothing. I also tried to recover my last backup through R&R, but the password I entered to protect my backup won't work in R&R and so it freezes the app after 3 tries. I don't understand why R&R is loading in the first place...there's nothing wrong with my software. Can anyone please help? I urgently need my computer to finish off some uni work before tomorrow.
    Regards,
     Pascal

Ok it seemed that my Windows partition was corrupted for some reason and since Lenovo hasn't come to publish a repair tool for Windows 7 yet I had no other choice than to boot from a Linux Live CD (Ubuntu). Backed up all my important files and then lay hands on the MBR myself...Anyways it worked so yeh, hope this helps anyone who's experienced the same problem until Lenovo makes that repair tool available

  • IMac won't boot after OSX  Intel update crash - Newbie needs help please!

    Hi,
at the weekend I updated OSX on my IMac 17 with an Intel update. An error message said that the update could not be installed and that the update was sent to the trash - a restart was requested. Since that shutdown my Mac chimes and gets stuck at the white load screen (hard drive is quiet).
    I've tried the following:
Holding Shift key upon boot to initiate Safe Mode - No Joy!
Apple+S to run disk utlity/console - cannot initiate to cmd prompt!
Just as a little background - I'm a recent Apple convert and typical Windows defector. I've seen the light after many years in M**soft environments (I even trained to MCSE) but my Mac OS knowledge is considerably lacking. Let's be honest - so far I haven't had any problems.
Any gentle help would be most appreciated folks - I'm not sure where to start and I want my baby back!
    Many thanks.

Same here. I have an iMac 20". It has been upgraded to Leopard and running fine since I purchased it 2 weeks ago. I downloaded the latest OS/X update (100+MB in size) but the installation failed. The system requested a reboot but it has not been able to ever since. It simply keeps beeping with a white screen. I put the Leopard DVD in, held the "C" key, but nothing works. Now I have a system that won't work. From now on, I will shy away from getting the latest update .... I am planning to take it to the apple store

  • Computer won't boot after last BIOS update from Toshiba.

It was working fine before the update.  Shut down and can't boot; blank screen with blinking cursor.  I have followed the suggestions of getting into the computer but the HDD cannot be found.  Finally got into BIOS but when I run repair I get error: 08-0E89-0000---Partition Creation Failed.  Any help would be greatly appreciately. I have a Satellite A665-S6086 running Win 7 Home 64-bit.

Thanks Peter for your reply but that is a non-issue now as I purchased a new HD WD750 Black to replace the one I was having problems with and the recovery worked fine, so I thought.  When the computer goes to sleep or hibernate, I don't know which the HD fails on waking.  I was going to try recovery again but instead I reseated the HD and it booted.  This has happened a couple times since the initial 'fail' but seems to Restart fine.  but I have only done it once.  Of course all of these problems started after BIOS 2.30 update last week.
BTW I had tried all the steps provided to other members having the same problem (Puppy, recovery disk, pressing 0 and removing battery while holding something down) but was getting nowhere and it seemed to me that all HDs can't all fail at once.  So that's why I added the part about the BIOS update that no one seemed to acknowledged.  computer working, install update and restart and the HD failed; yes to me it was questionable.  Additionally, judging by some of the repair technics it is assumed that we members are more advanced or that buy our recovery disk will fix the problem but it does not fix every problem especially if the HD is not recognized. But what do I know.

  • IPhone 5 won't boot after 8.1 update

I'm having an issue with my iPhone 5. I just upgraded from 7.0.4 to 8.1. After that, i turn the power button on, the white bootup screen shows, then the phone shuts right off. It does this when i plug it into a power source as well. I just can't get it to boot into the phone itself at all. What happened, and what can i do to get it back?

    Hey mknabster,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone will not turn on. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

  • G4 won't boot after last Security Update

I have an AGP G4 tower that's been running 10.4.11 fine until today. The last thing I did was Software Update. The only things on the list were an iLife update and a Security Update. I don't know the update number but since I always keep the system updated, I can only assume these two updates were the latest available.
So after the update... I hit the "restart" button but then I get the grey screen with a prohibitory sign and a spinning wheel.
It's not a hardware issue... I can reboot this machine into an alternate hard drive just fine.
    I fixed permissions.
I ran disk utility - hard disk checked out ok.
Still can't boot using this drive.
Obviously this last security update broke my system folder because it's as if it can't find a valid system.
So now the question is, what can I do to fix my system folder?
    Thank-you.

    Simple fix.
I downloaded and installed the 10.4.11 Combo Update onto original drive while booted into the alternate drive. I then downloaded and installed the Security Update 2008-0001 onto the original drive. As a precaution I repaired permissions on the original drive.
    Successfully booted into original drive.

  • 17" iMac (Tiger) won't boot after latest software update

I downloaded the latest Tiger software update on my 17" Intel Core Duo iMac a couple of days ago and after I hit Restart I can't get past the grey Apple loading screen.
I've tried everything it tells me in the manual, pressing various combinations of keys as I turn the computer on, but to no avail. I also put Install Disk 1 in and tried to check hardware from that (pressing D) and tried pressing C too to boot from it, but nothing happens, just the grey apple loading screen. Of course, now the install disk is stuck in there too.
Any clues as to how I can sort this out? I'm still under AppleCare, so if worst comes to worst I'll call UK support and see what they can do, but thought I'd try everything I could at home first.
    TIA.
