HP 6510 stopped printing black and "broken pipe"

All of a sudden my printer won't print black.  I did all the suggestions on your forum for this including hard reset, downloaded the new driver update to operate with Mac 10.9.1 Mavericks, uninstalled and reinstalled printer and the problem is not fixed.  I also uninstalled and reinstalled all 4 printer cartridges.  Mac and printer are both less than 2 years old.  We bought them at the same time.  Printer has been great until now but I'm ready to throw it out the window after already  having spent hours trying to fix it.  The other 3 colors are all working fine for printing.  Once the new driver installed I noticed that the print options had changed and now the "broken pipe" message came up on printer and on Mac.  I have always printed wirelessly.  Please help!

Hi flytibbs,
I understand that you are getting a broken pipe error when reinstalling the software and drivers on your Mac. Here is a link to the Apple Forum where a customer resolved this issue.
For black ink not printing I recommend following the steps in this document for Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages. If you have done all of the steps in this document, then try installing the driver for the HP Envy 4500 series.
I hope this helps, let me know how it goes.
Thank you,

  • Hp photosmart 6510 not printing black

Printer just stopped printing black.  seems to be a major problem with these printers.  curse you HP.  Thought i was doing right by going with you to replace my other printer.

For the Photosmart 6510 the troubleshooting steps in the document here may help.  Especially make sure the vents are cleared.  If that does not resolve the issue then resetting the printer as described in the post here may help.  If this does not resolve the issue then read the entire thread here and try requesting reset instructions.

  • Printer has stopped printing black

I have had my printer for about 3 1/2 years now and it has always worked fine. However, recently it suddenly stopped printing black. I noticed that the ink was low so I replaced the cartridges (on all 4 colours) using original HP cartridges but this has not solved the problem. I tried cleaning the print heads more than once without result. The printer software on my laptop reports nothing amiss with the ink monitor showing all colours full, nor is there any fault showing on the printer's display. All the test pages that I have printed print the three other colours fine but wherever there is supposed to be black, there is nothing. All-text pages are completely blank and colour pages show only coloured text. As long as this problem persists the printer is unuseable.

I've had a similar experience and outcome with my printer as described @ Londonitalian, although I've owned my printer 4 or 5 years.  My printer is the Officejet 6500 e709n AIO (my first AIO) and up to now it worked well for the most part, minus a few hiccups here and there, including a large appetite for ink and a high rattling / struggling noise level, but I was always able to correct issues that popped up.....
My serious problem began on 1/4/15 and after days of exhaustive troubleshooting exercises (testing , retesting, re-installing drivers via CD and HP website and applying updates, unplugging, replugging and multiple printer reboots / resets and alignments, etc., etc.), I concluded that the new HP ink cartridges that I had just put in were defective (anything is possible these days and what do I know), especially since one of the reports showed color ink level had dropped nearly 30% upon replacement, whereas the black ink did not show up but remained at 100% on the ink level monitor, and no printing other than test exercises had been done.  Also, all diagnostic tools indicated like yours that all was well with the printer.
So, I took the newly opened HP ink combo set (packaging and all) back to Staples and exchanged for a new set. (Fortunately, the purchase receipt was still in the bag with the ink in the file cabinet as I had purchased it last July as a back-up set and put it away - checked ink date and was not expired).  I also found instructions online on how to remove and clean the printhead for my printer, which I followed very carefully and was beginning to feel very good about my adventures (as a 60+ year old female)!  After cleaning with water only and drying the printhead as instructed, I put in the new HP ink cartridges (ones exchanged by Staples) and began to get error messages that I had not experienced before; addressed them all and finally the ink levels were appearing again on the monitor.  But still the printer would not print and the test results were the same...blank sheets and no black ink.
Again, I disassembled everything and with the aid of a flashlight, I looked far into the printer and noticed large clogs of black gooey stuff, as if something had spilled over, in front of the docking area (far right hand side of the printer where the moveable mount and printhead reside when not in use), which is not an area easy to see or access.  I took a pencil and removed gingerly as much gunk (turned out to be all ink) as I could reach.  Then I did a second cleaning of the printhead as before and let it dry even longer.
I re-assembled the prinhead and installed the cartridges into the cradle, and still no printing but got new messages stating that the color ink cartridges were low and needed to be replaced!  As before the "first cleaning fix" and all troubleshooting, print status reports showed color ink but no black ink and by this "second cleaning fix" the color ink was very low and the black ink remained non-existent. And, moreover, from the start of this problem to now, the only print jobs that have come out of this printer have been diagnostic troubleshooting exercises, which I now know use an excessive amount of color ink  to produce no solution!
Now I don't know if the marketplace or even HP provides "inexpensive testing cartridges" for consumers troubleshooting purposes but they should.  But what I do know is that at $60+ for original HP ink set, I will not be purchasing a new ink set to determine or troubleshoot if my second cleaning of the printhead was a success or not. After some experimentation, it appears as though the program code on this printer, even during troubleshooting, is written for all ink levels to be at a very high level, whether ink flows through or not!
However, before ditching all efforts, just in case my printer problem was above my "pay grade", I called a repair company, listed as an authorized HP service company, about bringing the printer in for an evaluation. After all, I like the printer/features and had gotten it at a decent price on a Saturday following Black Friday at Staples, although by now I've paid several times over in ink replacement cost alone!   Also, the printer has not been heavily used and still looks fairly new.  I spoke with a gentleman at the repair service company and was advised that I would probably be better off buying a new printer as labor and parts for an inkjet printer would be more expensive than the cost of purchasing a new one!
Londonitalian, I hope you have better luck in finding a solution to your problem but I am now shopping for a new printer and hopefully, I will find a quality one that utilizes ink efficiently and has a low replacement cost for ink cartridges.  My HP Officejet 6500 e709n AIO has let me down and I've spent far too much time trying to find a solution to its current ailment, blank page and no black ink.
After nearly 15 years and three HP printers, I'm inclined to broaden my printer brand search.....

  • HP 6500 Wireless Printer Stopped Printing Black Ink When Connected to PC

My printer stopped printing with black ink.  All the other colors seem to work fine.  I hooked up my Mac to test and see if that worked and it did!  I've concluded that it's something to do with the driver since it worked on my Mac, so I re-installed the driver and it still does not print black ink while trying to print from our Dell PC.  Any Ideas?

  • 309n AIO stopped printing black bought new printhead from HP still does not print black???

309n AIO stopped printing black bought new printhead from HP still does not print black??? tried the "cleaning" process finally bought new cartridge carriage cost me $50 from HP still dies not print black> i believe it is a software issue. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Jokurone,
I understand you have a Photosmart C309n that has stopped printing black. I'm sorry to hear this has been happening, but I will do my best to assist you.
I would recommend following this Print Quality document as it will help determine whether the issue is with the hardware or the software. If your test pages come out with black then it may very well be a software issue. However, if the test pages come out with no black still it's a hardware issue with the printer. In that case if you follow through that document and the black still isn't printing then you can have a look at Bob_Headrick's post about soaking your printhead.
Hope this helps, have a great day!

    Hey.
Does anyone know how to print black and white on Mountain Lion?
I searched the community and Google but I couldn't find anything...
    Regards,

It's usually in the Print dialog when you File > Print.  Select the Show details button, the change the option in the horizontal line to Paper Type/Quality.  Click the Color Options triangle and change Color to Greyscale.

    Hi Rod
For the PS C6180 you should have an option in the print settings to Print in Grayscale, see step three in the link below

  • Print black and white only, on Hp photosmart 5514.

    Hi,
I dont like it at all that i have to contact support forums for something like this.
it use to be so easy to choose color or black and white printing.
Why have you made it so difficult ? Totally pisses me off but i leave that for the feedback section.
I have seen others with the same problem so it is not only me. now it has taken more than 20 minutes and i have to get to work soon.
So, how do I print black and white (or greyscale) using my newly bought hp photosmart 5514 ? ( is it smart ???)
I have been wasting a lot of ink now, very unsmooth not having it available in the ordinary printing window.
Like it matters, i use win 7 blablabla

I also hate that there is NO WHERE to find a simple answer.  I have a "HUGE" XL cartridge of black only.  Then I have to buy all the stupid little tiny color cartridges AND another little black cartridge.
Here I suppose: when I print in color, I use the color + small black cartridge.
When I want to print BLACK ONLY or GRAYSCALE, I choose that and it only prints using the XL big black cartridge.
WRONG.  And no one can seem to answer this correctly, t but I know it does not work.
Remove 1 empty color cartridge whole printer won't work, even if I want black print only.
If all the small "color" cartridges + small blk cartridge is low but the BIG BLACK cartridge is showing full, still won't print BLACK ONLY.
I cannot PRINT with this stupid printer unless all cartridges have ink and are inserted.  STUPID
I am now late to work simply because I cannot print a document PERIOD unless I have full color sitting there.
I just tried it multiple ways, grayscale, black only blah blah and it ALWAYS came out too- light, ie the sm blk cartridge was being used and it is admittedly LOW ON INK.  WHAT is the big black cartridge doing there, saying it is full and not printing "black only" or "grayscale"?
The only article I could find that halfway enlioghtened me to the problem was HP page stating that "black"  is never really black, to improve quality (thanks for making the decision for me) HP adds just a bit of color here and there to make black really black for paper quality paper.
SO SNARLING.  Going to *bay to get refilled cartridges so I can print in a week.  SNARL

How do I get my printer to print black and white.

  • Png within my document when converted to a pdf are printing black and white rest is color-help! WHY?

I am creating a document in Publisher & converting to a pdf. Most of my png elements within the document, are then printing black and white from the pdf (everything else is in color)? Don't know what is going on, doesn't seem to happen on all printers, is there a setting I am missing? Help! Thanks

Could be a setting in the PNGs when they are saved.
Have you tried saving them as GIFs and replacing them in the document(s)?

  • Trouble printing black and white

    Friends,
I'm trying to print black and white on an imac i7, snow leopard, hp premium plus all in one (309g) printer. The prints have a slight purple cast. It is highly noticeable when the prints are placed next to older black and whites printed with an HP 8450. I print out of Aperture normally, but I'm having the same problem printing from preview. I use hp paper and inks, and the hp printer profiles.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I used all current profiles for the printer. However, I just tried something different:
I turned off colorsync and let the printer manage the colors. I got a MUCH BETTER
black and white rendition. Who woulda thunk it -- all this effort to manage colors,
and the printer does a better job than we do. Go figger.
    Thanks for your help.
    Steve
You have the right idea, at least in some respects. The trouble with Apple's color managements system and pretty much all graphics programs these days is that those who coded them haven't got a foggy idea about black and white nor even grayscale. For instance the color filter for "black and white" is not true black and white, it is RGB gray; in other words it is using three colors to produce gray (or black) and that is just not the same. RGB gray images are still 24-bit images whereas true grayscale is 8-bit and true black and white is 1-bit. True black and white images can be very high resolution yet be very small files because of the phenomenal compression that's possible. Only those of use who actually work(ed) with black and white film and black & white ink on presses truly understand black and white color. Which is unfortunate because RGB gray is so poor and the files are just HUGE!
I've encountered the same problem, and am trying to solve it also. Perhaps I can find a profile for true black and white. Or create one? For instance, as I mentioned above, Preview has a filter for black and white, (but only to save a pdf file) and if you then save the pdf file as a TIF via that black & white filter and then load the resulting image into a program that's actually capable of black and white, you will find that the file it created is actually RGB gray (24-bit) - it LOOKS gray but it's not. Whereas if you load a true black and white image into Preview (Preview unfortunately has no means of creating true black and white, nor even to convert back to color) then you will discover that now you have the option to save as 1-bit or 8-bit gray (1-bit being true black and white with no shades of gray and 8-bit being grayscale with 256 shades of gray i.e. 0 to 255).
    So while PAHU writes...
Black and white printing of photos (aka grayscale printing) uses other colours,
not just black, to make grays. If you can see a purple cast, this could be a result
of the magenta not printing in the correct spot or being too prominent in the print.
...that is correct insofar as what printers/programs typically are doing with the given color profiles, but it is not correct. Grayscale should NOT use other colors; grayscale should use only black (which is also more economical). By turning off colorsync you likely enabled the printer's color management system to take over and print true grayscale (black ink only).
So I don't yet have a solution, but I do agree that you've touched on a glaring deficiency in Mac OS color management and probably a great many graphic programs today, and likely the same goes for many printers.
