HP 8500A saves scans as v1.3 PDF. I need version 1.4 or above.

The scanner on an HP 8500A, product number CM755A, scans and saves as a PDF to a network drive.
It works well, but in the properties of the saved PDF show it is Version 1.3
We need to e-mail the scanned image to customers including some who can only read PDFs version 1.4 or above
We have a workaround of printing the saved PDF using CutePDF or similar, which saves the new PDF as version 1.4
This can then be emailed to our customers who can read it, no problem.
But as this is a hassle, and we do not know which customers might be affected, I need to update the scanner to save as a v1.4+ PDF. I tried updating the firmware, but it tells me that it is already up-to-date.
Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks for your help.
Andrew

I have the latest Adobe reader
Adobe Reader cannot create a PDF (even from a scan).
Acrobat (Standard or Pro) is required for that.
Even with Acrobat the actual "scan" and image output is a process that is exclusive to the scanner and its software.
The scanner/scanner software image output file is handed off to Acrobat for conversion to PDF.
Not having Acrobat means that the PDF created is coming from software bundled with the scanner/scanner software.
That a version 1.3 (Acrobat 4) PDF is created indicates the bundled stuff is, well... "old" .
By design Acrobat creates/saves a PDF to a PDF version that is "one back".
Acrobat Pro has the ability to process a given PDF to be compatible with different PDF versions.
(e.g., the Optimizer facility or Preflights)
If it is important that you have a PDF created to a newer version you may want to consider obtaining Acrobat or updating whatever was bundled with your scanner.
Be well...

    Hello TrailsEnd,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're receiving an error message "The HP scan application was unable to save the file to the specified location". I will do my best to assist you!
First, I would recommend downloading this tool called the Print and Scan Doctor. This tool diagnoses and helps resolve common printing, scanning, and connectivity problems, including: (This information is stated here.)
USB: Verifies that the USB connection from your computer to the HP product is working correctly.
Network: Verifies that the network connection between your computer and your network is working correctly.
Device Status Test : Checks for device errors such as out of paper, paper jams, carriage stalls, and paper feed issues, and then provides instructions for fixing the error.
Driver Check : Checks for missing or corrupt driver files.
Device Manager : Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
Device Online : Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.
Print Queue : Checks for and clears pending print jobs in the print queue (a log of print jobs waiting to print).
Port Match : Checks the port settings for the HP product.
Device Conflicts : Checks for conflicts with other drivers, such as other printer brands.
Ink Issues : Checks the cartridges and ink levels for issues that affect print quality.
Print Settings : Checks and adjusts the print quality settings.
Test Print : Prints a test page for print quality evaluation, and provides options for cleaning and aligning the printhead if necessary.
Scan Tests : Checks the scan mechanism, drivers, and registry entries.
Let me know if this tool fixes a scanning problem on this post. If this doesn't resolve your issue, then I am going to recommend uninstalling the software. Please follow this HP document on Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once this is complete, you can perform a clean boot on your computer. I will provide a Microsoft document here to help you. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program. Now, you can install the full feature software from the HP website here.
Please post your results, as I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!

  • How do I save a scanned image as a pdf file w/ my MG5420?

I just installed my MG5420 printer and when I scan an image I do not see an option to save the file as a .pdf file.  Is there a scan utility to assist in scanning documents?  There was a utility for my MP800 printer that made this very easy.

    Hi delach,
It sounds like you may not have the My Image Garden software which allows you to scan documents to PDF.  You can download the software by following these steps:
Go to Canon's Support & Drivers website at:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer
Enter your model name into the Model Name field, then click GO.
Select your operating system in the Select Operating System and Select OS Version dropdown lists, respectively.
Expand the Software section by clicking the red triangle.
Click on the file named My Image Garden.
After reading the details and disclaimer, click 'I Agree Begin Download' and save the file to your computer.
Once the download is complete, double-click the file from its download location to begin the installation.

Just upgraded to Mavericks. Now I cannot access scans from my hp scanner. After it complete the scans and I try to save as tiff, jpeg or pdf I get a either a grey blur or a message that says cannot save because the file cannot be written to. I did not have any problems before the upgrade. I would greatly appreciate any light shed on this.

Go to the HP site and look for drivers for your scanner. It apparently needs an updated driver to work with Mavericks.

  • Avoid "save scanned file as" during scan to pdf?

i want to scan to pdf but don't want to have to save it if i am just printing to fax.
    thanks,
    scott

I have the same issue. We just upgraded a lot of our users from Adobe Acrobat Std 7 to Adobe Acrobat Std 8. With ver 7, when doing a 'Create a PDF From Scanner', the document gets scanned first then the 'Save Scanned File As' dialog box comes up. Now, the dialog box comes up even before the document gets scanned. If you hit the CANCEL button, it would not let you do anything. This is causing a lot of problems for our users because our Adobe Acrobat is integrated with a Document Management software we do not need this additional step. Is there a way to turn off this feature?

I would like to know the best way to scan music into a pdf format which I can  then sycn with ipad

    smgchandler,
Any camcorder that can connect via USB or that can save to an SD card can interface with an iPad if you have the iPad Camera Connection Kit so that you can watch your videos on the new iPad's beautiful retina display.  You can find this on the Apple website or in most big box retail stores.

  • Add multiple scans to the same pdf file scan at time of scanning

Hello, HP Officejet Pro 6830 How do I get it to add multiple scans to the same pdf file? I need to scan multiple documents and have them all end up in one pdf. Some may be double-sided and it is fine if I have to scan them individually. At present it will only do one scan or a double-sided scan then it wants to save the scan and not ask if there are any more pages. The only option is to save or not. Thank you.

After your first scan you need to click the + sign at the 7 o'clock position.

  • Preview Crashes when doing a Save As . . . (.pdf)

Anyone have this problem with Leopard . . .
Use Image Capture to scan in an item.
Open the completed scan in Preview.
Try to Save As and select file type .pdf
PREVIEW PROGRAM CRASHES EVERY TIME and the file is NOT saved.
Print to .pdf works fine. But Save As . . . .pdf does not.

It sounds like an item in HD/Library/Contextual Menu Items. Drag the contents of that folder to the desktop and test again. If that sorts it put the items back one at a time to find the culprit..
If that's not it, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and do the same.
Open "Console" in your Utilities folder. From the Sidebar choose: Log
Files >> CrashReporter >> "~/ Library Logs" >> Preview and paste the contents here for the latest Preview crash and maybe we can figure what's going on.

  • How to save a bitmap to a pdf file format?

    Hello,
We have a scanning application that can write out BMP files or TIFF files.  My boss would like to have the files in PDF format.  Is there a way to do this?  I can write code if given the specs.  Call an external routine if there is one available for free or low cost.  I initially get the info from a handle to a DIB, convert it to a Bitmap object, then save it to a TIFF.  I am using VB.NET and am looking for a solution that isn't too costly in cash or time since the benefit is small, but I do not know if there is one.  Even if someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

Open in a graphics package and print to the Adobe PDF printer. TIFF files can be opened directly in Acrobat and converted (you would then use Save As to get the PDF). BMP files are not in the list of files converted by Acrobat, but you could still try -- might get an error message, but maybe it will work also.

  • Which one i need when i need the scanned docs convert to pdf

i have to sent the documents from scanning to pdf. Which adobe reader i need to use

My above reply was under the assumption that your scanned doc is already a PDF; if it's in a different format you will need to convert it, either using Acrobat, or the PDF Pack online service.
But most scanners can save scanned docs directly as a PDF.

I had been saving as a PDF and then reducing the size of the PDF by printing it as a PDF with a degree of image compression. I write manuals with a LOT of screen captures and line art that needs to be clear. So it is a balancing act between image clarity and PDF size. The PDFs on the web need to be smaller - sure you can undertsand.
Anyway, when I print the PDF again, I lose both my destinations and bookmarks.
Anyone know of any way to avoid that?

Control the images by creating a custom PDF Job Options and then selecting it in the PDF Job Options drop-down of the PDF setup dialog box (File > Save as PDF...)
Create the custom PDF Job Options file with Distiller. If you do not have Distiller, open the Printing Preferences of the Adobe PDF printer. Start with the Smallest File Size Job Options settings and Edit.

  • 8500A PLUS - Scan to Email - to another 8500A Plus email address will it print with no PC?

Wanted to know if anyone has tried using two HP Officejet Pro  8500A Plus  SCAN to EMAIL feature without the use of a PC. Anything to look out for before spending the money on two of these units? Basically i want to set one up at my office the other at my home and use them without a pc using dsl internet to send  and receive scans .

If you have 2 8500a with the scan to email option you will need a pc to set up your scan to email and once that is done you could register those 2 printers and enable eprint and using that address you could scan an item from one and email it to the other and it will work using eprint.  I hope this helps
