HP 8600 issues

After apple driver update, can't print to my networked HP 8600

Sometimes it is necessary to delete the printer in System Preferences > Print & Scan, then add it again. Try that.

  • Extreme heat on an 2008 MBP

    Hi,
My MBP has been heating up quite rapidly.
The CPU has gone up to 74 degrees (Celsius), and the GPU to 76.
About the same thing happened once when I was trying to load Windows 7 VIA Parallels. I figured I was overloading the CPU and therefor it was heating up.
    The problem now is different:
I'm not running any heavy applications.
As a matter of fact the only applications I'm running right now are:
Skype, Adium, Adobe Reader, Firefox and Mail. One would think that the processing power needed for these Applications are low...
What's more the fan speed does not increase at all(!). It just sits and stays at 2000Rpm...
Enviroment: Room temperature - 25 degrees Celsius (airconditioned).
    OS: OSX 10.6.4 Snow Leopard
    Processor: Intel Core2Duo 2.5GHz
    GPU: nVidia Geforce 8600M
this is NOT the unibody version, it's the previous aluminum version.
added a screenshot to better explain my problem:

Have you used Activity Monitor to check for runaway background processes? If so, did you change AM's "Show" window from its default of "My Processes" to "All Processes?" This is important because the typical rogue background process is not owned by the logged-in user but by the system.
Also close all user apps when you check for a runaway. It's easier to spot if the computer is at "normal idle." Anti-virus software is notorious for eating up background processes. So can third-party backup programs
Are you using an external monitor with the built-in display closed? That can trap heat.
Open System Profiler (In Applications > Utilities) and see what "SMC Version system)" reports. There was an SMC update after the discovery of the nVidea 8600 issues that changes the fan behavior presumably to provide better cooling. If installed, the Profiler entry for SMC version should start with 1.3.
I take it you have the MBP positioned so air can get to the case bottom? That's an important part of the cooling system.

  • Just had my logic board replaced, dim screen with no brightness control

My MacBook Pro 17 inch was just in for repair due to the nvidia 8600 issue (no video, Mac won't boot, etc.). I have it back as of this afternoon but when I turned it on the screen is unbelievably dim -- almost as if I have the brightness at the second-to-lowest level.
Here's the catch: when I attempt to use the brightness control, either via F1/F2 keys or in System Preferences the brightness will not change. The icon overlay shows up on the screen as if it is working but the screen brightness just doesn't work.
When I bring the brightness indicator all the way down, to the point where the screen would normally shut off, the screen stays on...but it's just the same dim screen.
    Any ideas?

Test while started in Recovery : if the problem persists, then it likely is a hardware issue.
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) probably won't change anything, but you can readily do it before contacting the repairers.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus connection issue - HELP!

I have a strange issue:  after some hours, the communication link is dropped between the computer and printer.  When this happens, IE becomes unusable and will not connect to anything.  This is replicated on three XP home machines.   The fourth, a vista ultimate machine, does not seem to be affected (yet).  I get the "scan to computer is disabled" error.  It cannot be re-enabled.  At this point I cannot print either.  I can reach the embedded web server on the printer via firefox and can still surf using firefox.  I can ping the printer, but again once the connection is dropped, no printing or scanning to the computer.  The only thing I've found that resolves the issue (temporarily) is to reboot the computer, which just starts the cycle again.
last night I installed the software on an XP machine and the laptop to test when the connection dropped.  They lasted from 7pm Monday until I got home at 5pm Tues.  The machines were not used.  Once I started using them (firefox only), then they dropped the connection within a half hour of each other around 7pm.  The other XP machine lasted from 7pm Mon until 7am tues, when my wife started using it and then noticed it dropped sometime that tues between 7 and 9AM.  An 11am tues reboot ran OK until 10 pm tues when connection was lost again (and IE is now dead).   The Vista machine has been running since 7pm monday until now (930pm tues) and still seems to be holding.
printer hardwired, to router, static IP, 100-full link speed (also tried 10-half)
    router dlink di-655
two XP machines are hardwired, vista is hardwired, and last xp machine is a laptop on wireless.
I've swapped cables rebooted and reinstalled multiple times.  I must have a file a mile long on the support phone line.  They were unable to fix it.  I asked this to be escalated, but who knows when I'll get a response.
I've toggled firewalls - XP built in
    I've uninstalled anti virus software
I've even put up with crazy suggestions from tech support like changing the router channel (uhh, it is wired!)
one xp machine had an AIO 4215 hooked via USB and the others printed to it via network, but the printer has been deleted from the networked machines.
I can ping 127.0.0.1 which is supposed to indicate the tcp service is OK.
I have not reset winsock .. I can see one machine being bad, but three????
malware / virus scan shows no issues.  Again one maybe, but three??
The only thing I can think of is that there is something in the XP networking stack that conflicts with the new 8600 software as hours pass.  Perhaps there is some polling operation that goes on then dies after some time, then it kills IE as it dies.
When the printer works it is great, but rebooting is not a permanent solution to this.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!  I am stumped and so is tech support.  They are sending it to engineering, but who knows when they will respond.
    thanks in advance.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

well it looks like I have a working solution  ... I downloaded a freeware file called process.exe .  I made a cmd file via notepad with the following contents:
rem this is to keep the HP network printer communicating with the desktops
    rem
    process -k "hpnetworkcommunicator.exe"
    rem
    process -k "scantopcactivationapp.exe"
    rem
    "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet Pro 8600\Bin\HPNetworkcommunicator.exe"
    rem
Start "" "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet Pro 8600\Bin\ScanToPCActivationApp.exe" -deviceID CNXXXX:NW -scfn "HP Officejet Pro 8600 (Network)"
the XXXX is your printer serial number with an extra character or two.  Pull that number from the port tab after you pull up "properties" for the 8600 printer.
This cmd file basically restarts the printer link.  It opens a command window that launches the program to re-establish the link.. then it closes the command window.   The launched program shows that the communication link is dead (just for a few seconds), but then it makes the connection... THEN you hit the close button and coninue your work until it dies again.
I may have it autorun every X hours if I can narrow down a good time.  Until then I have a shortcut on the desktop to "FIX HP LINK"   ...   I only had to do this for my XP machines, as the vista one seemed OK.
What ticks me off is that I shouldn't have to do all of this diagnosis. It would be nice if there is a fix in the pipeline so the link stays stable al the time.  I've spent hours trying to figure this crap out.
Anyhow, I hope the time I spent helps someone.  PS, thanks to the OJ6500 thread that had the info for the scantopcactivationapp.exe program.
PS  ...  I'm still waiting for an engineer to contact me, if any HP employees are reading this.
PSS  I haven't tried this without killing and restarting the hpnetworkcommunicator stuff, but it works for now.

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus - "Scan to Computer" issue on Mac OSX 10.8 or 10.9

    Hi...
I have started experiencing the notorious "scan to computer not working" issue on my 1-month OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, after having used the feature a number of times flawlessly.
There are a lot of potential solutions mentioned in dozens of relevant posts for both Mac and Windows, e.g.:
"Failed to open a session on the device"...
Scan to computer does not work...
Problem scanning to computer with an 8600 wireless
Unable to enable print to computer...
Enable Scan to Computer - Communication Error
Officejet Pro 8600 Utility does not show my Mac computer in scan settings
A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning
HP Wireless All-in-One Printers - Communication Error between the Scanner and Your Computer...
    Etc.
However, in my case, no solution works, after several frustrating hours of trying to fix the issue, in Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), or after upgrading to Maverics (10.9).
The behavior of the device points to a software issue, since:
The printer is visible on the network
The print function has been working fine
    The HP Scan function works
The generic Scan function from System Preferences works (although in earlier times it did not, or it stopped working soon after invoking it)
The "Scan to Computer" option does not appear in the HP Utility screen (although occasionally, after random sequences of unistalling and installing the software, it reappears)
The HP Installer crashes before completing the installation (this is a latest symptom, apparently happening before unvoking the HP Setup Assistant, which still works fine)
As already mentioned, I have tried all possible solutions, including software and firmware updates, Apple drivers, HP drivers (full featured software), clean (un)installations, followed by computer and printer restarts. Nothing seems to work.
The "Scan to Computer" feature of the 8600 always works on my Windows 7 laptop, after initial configuration.
The next step will be returning the device for a refund, but before resorting to that, I am giving it a last chance, in (the unlikely) case there is something new I have not tried yet.
    Thanks,
    PNS

  • Intermittently having issue sending scans to networked directory folder HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g

    Hello All,
    I have a printer installed an AIO HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g which is cappable of scanning either by flatbed or feeder to a networked drive/folder. For the most part this works fine, however 2 times out of 10 it produces the following error;
"Cannot connect to \\'Server details\Folder location path'.  Make sure the remote computer is turned on."
Now I have seen many post about disabling the filewall and other, however none of this type after an install.
Some obvous checks have been made already, Network cable replace, Changing of the destination folder location, and reseting the password for the scanner to auth as well as confirming the permisions. And each time the tests via the web console and physical tests work fine though this doesn't last.
    Could anyone help?
    Thanks

    Hi @Paperjam27
From your description, it sounds like the issue is intermittent. It can sometimes be challenging to identify the root cause of an issue when the problem is not consistent, but I am happy to work with you towards a solution. I suspect the issue might have something to do with the network. I know you said you have tried a new cable and done some troubleshooting already but bear with me here.
When you say you replaced the cable, do you have an Ethernet cable connected between the printer and the router? if not, then I wonder if there is some sort of interference on your wireless connection. Is your router is a dual band router broadcasting both 2.4 and 5.0 frequency? The printer only works on 2.4GHz, maybe this is the root cause.
The channel your router is set to can impact your network consistency too. For example, if you are on channel 11 and others in your area are also on channel 11 or even 9 or 10 it causes congestion on that channel. Think of the channel like a highway or interstate, the more cars on that highway/interstate, the slower you go due to congestion, if you are on a highway with less people are on it, it is more like smooth sailing! You can print a network configuration page to see what channel you are using and see what channel others in your area are no. If the higher channels are most common you might consider changing yours to 1, 2, or 3, and visa versa.  How to: Printing a Network Configuration Page.
has this ben an issue since you have had the printer or did it recently start happening? If this only recently started, can you think of anything that changed recently? Do you have only one access point (router) or do you have a secondary router or extender? Can you think of anything that might be interfering with your network, and do you find the issue occurs more at a certain time of the day than others?
I found on my network at home, I was often seeing delays in response time in the early evening because others are coming home from school and work and 'clogging up the channel', I changed the channel and have had little to no issue since.
Let me know if you think of anything, and post back with the answers to the questions I have posted and I will get back to you. Thanks.

  • Printing Envelopes Issue with HP Officejet Pro 8600

I have recently purchased the HP Officejet Pro 8600.  I am upgrading from the Photosmart series.  I use Windows 7 64bit operating system.  I have no error messages
When I print a #10 envelope, the return address in the top left is partially cut off.  I can't seem to adjust the margins to allow for the return address to print.
Additionally I would like to "save" some custom envelope sizes to accommodate my personal greeting card envelopes.  My other printer allowed for more paper sizes than this one does.
Can anyone offer any suggestions with either of these issues?
    Darrell

    Hi there dlfant,

  • Wireless printing issue. Lonovo Think Pad v. Office jet pro 8600

I went through all 7 of the trouble shooting steps but still can't get my wireless printing to work with my Lonovo laptop T430 and my HP office jet Pro 8600 ..last resort was to join the forum so here I am. all connections appear to be on line and as they should be until I try to print a document.  The print window tells me printer is offline but the printer network test tells me it passed all tests and is connected and ready.  Using windows 7 operating system.

llbbsis, if everything passes my initial concern is that you might not be connected to the same network on your printer as your computer is connected to. So the first thing i would check is being sure that the SSID on both is the same and not something like "NetworkName" and "NetworkName -Guest."
Next, have you used the Print and Scan Doctor from HP? It is a good tool to diagnose and treat some of the smaller issues with printing:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c03286146
Check those two things first and get back with me, if you need further help I am more than willing to do whatever I can to get the issue at hand taken care of.
    Have a great day!

  • Driver Issues with HP Officejet Pro 8600 and Windows 8

I have to reinstall the printer driver for my HP Office Jet Pro 8600 wireless printer each time I power up my laptop. I do not have any issues with this printer when using my PCs and my antroid tablet.  Once the driver is reinstalled I can print my documents however it becomes "offline" whenever I log off and then log back onto my laptop.

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @Shrn
I read your post about how your printer will disconnect and show offline on your laptop, each time the computer is restarted. As this only happens on your laptop, the problem could be with a firewall running on your computer.
I would suggest checking your firewall settings and ensure you're allowing the printer to connect within the firewall.
This link may help: How to Edit Firewall Settings
You could also try running the Print and Scan Doctor when you restart your computer to see if this tool will pick up the printer on the network and connect it to your computer again.
Another option, would be to try a Clean Boot, which will turn off all Start Up Programs on your laptop to see if another program could be blocking the printer from connecting to it during a restart. Make sure to go back and enable the programs again after you have tested this out.
Let me know your findings and what happens!

  • OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus Connection Issues

My boss stricly uses his iPad and has the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus for wireless printing. However, he's been having major problems printing.  The iPad appears to see the printer on AirPrint, but nothing is getting printed. We've tried connecting the printer directly to our network, and it still won't print. We even got a new wireless router (Linksys E900 Wirless-N300 Router) but that has not seemed to help with the issue. I previously had the officejet 8500 and had multiple problems with it connecting wireless, to the point we just got rid of it. Are there any workarounds other than getting a new printer?

    Hi,
Airprint uses Apple's Bonjour which relies on Multicasting.
From my experience, Linksys routers do not have Multicast enabled by their default configuration.
Try modifying the router configuration by entering the router homepage (Its address should be the same as the Default Gateway listed on the printer once clicking the network icon.
From the router config click Security.
Check the checkbox next to Filter Multicast and Save the settings.
Reboot the router and check for any change.
If the issue persists I would also recommend checing for any firmware update to your router, those can improve Multicast traffic handaling in many cases..
    Hope that helps,
    Shlomi

  • Scan issues with HP Officejet Pro 8600 that worked fine! Now, I have a problem----is it Dropbox?

Never had a problem, but now when I scan, and it goes straight to My Documents,  when I go to open it, it's been replaced by an old picture.  Every one of my darn documents has that old picture and I can 't find any of my documents.  Please help. I do not have it hardwired in.  I have reset the printer and my laptop, but this started a few months ago and I think it has to do with Drop box.  I don't know what else to do.

  • Office Jet Pro 8600 ADF Issues

When copying, Faxing or Scanning using the ADF, the printer doesn't stop after putting the last page through.  It continues to try to find the next page when there isn't one and then gives me a jam error.  It has been inconvenient for scanning and copying but still gives me the correct result eventually with messages.  However, the fax will not go through when the jam error comes up.

    Hello @CokeMan99,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that when using the document feeder on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer you are getting a 'paper jam' error after your machine successfully pulls through the pages. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. By the sounds of it your machine is either experiencing a hardware issue within the roller or paper sensor mechanism within the document feeder, or the printer is experiencing a programming issue. To resolve these issues please follow the steps below.
    Step 1: Update the Firmware:
The internal programming Firmware Version within your machine is essentially the 'brains' of your printer. It controls what the printer does and how the printer does it. If there is any issues within the internal programming on your printer, you printer will not perform properly. To ensure that you are running the latest version of programming can I please have you click here. Once the website opens select the Download button on the top left. Follow any onscreen instructions to send the Firmware to your printer.
Once the Firmware has been successfully updated, please test the document feeder again. Should the issue persist, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Check Hardware:
There may be a dirty roller or piece of debris or paper within the document feeder mechanism that could be causing a paper jam message. This could also cause your machine to attempt to pull in additional pages after the paper has already been fed. To check the document feeder can I please have you click here. Once the support document opens please run through Solution one, Solution two, and Solution four. When you clean the document feeder be sure to keep an eye out for any paper or debris that may be jammed in there.
Once these steps have been completed, please test your document feeder again.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck!

  • Hp office jet pro 8600 air printing scale issues.

Can you help me figure out how I can fit my document (to scale correctly). I've tried printing it direct print using iOS air print and through the hp app. Thank you for your time!

    Hello Tracibranch2012,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I took some time and looked into scaling documents when printing from the iPad to the 8600. I was not able to find any options that allow you to scale documents or photos.
Google Cloud Print might be able to control the setting more to your needs. I know you can select which paper you are printing onto with Google Cloud Print, etc.
See if that helps out at all.
