HP c5280 won't work with airport on Snow Leopard

I have a HP C5280 connected via USB to an airport express unit. It's worked flawlessly on Leopard, but now that I've upgraded to SL, I get a message "Unable to open printer (read failure)!". If I connect my MacBook Pro directly via USB to the printer, it works fine.
Another oddity. My wife's Mac (still running Tiger) is also connected to the printer via our Airport network. I can connect to the printer through her computer and print out!
I've been in contact with HP, de-installed and re-installed all of their preferences, drivers, etc., but to no avail.
Appreciate any suggestions.

Rick,
Question: on your Snow Leopard machine, does your printer appear under USB printers attached to the Express?
After all of your dealings with the drivers, preferences, etc, combined with the fact that directly connecting with the printer is successful, I suspect that the problem may lie with the Airport Express.
Whenever I have problems with my Airports, 9 out of 10 times it has to do with a firmware issue. This is especially true when some Macs can connect, while others (running different versions of OS X) cannot.
My advice would be to check to see if the Airport Express is running the latest firmware. I would use Airport Utility on wife's computer to access the Airport Express and run a firmware update check. Also, it may behoove you to do a hard reset after saving all of your settings and setting the Airport up from scratch (this, too, has worked for me from time-to-time; in particular, after a power irregularity in our building).
As a quasi-side note, I have so many Macs running different versions of OS X and Airports strung together, that the easiest way I found to avoid problems similar to yours was to use one Mac (the one kept on most of the time) plugged into our office printer with printer sharing enabled.

  • HP DeskJet F380 won't work with Airport Express

    Hello,
I just purchased a HP DeskJet F380 AIO printer to use with my PBook G4 12". It works fine when connected directly to the PBook through USB, but when I try to use it with Airport Express it won't work. The printer setup utility recognizes the printer as a Bonjour printer but then the specific model won't show up in the pull-down menu. I've tried picking other HP printer models, but when I try to print the printer won't do anything at all. I asked HP support and they basically threw up their hands and gave no assistance.
How can I make this printer work with Airport?
    Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the Discussions
    Try the process outlined here:
HP Printers (and others) not on compatibility list and Airport Extreme Printing
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html
If the supplied HP driver won't work (and as there are no third party alternatives available) then no it won't work with Airport.

  • I want to install an old airport express, the ones which are directly plugged into the socket - but it does not work with Maverick or Snow Leopard - can I configure it with a windows pc?

I want to install an old airport express, the ones which are directly plugged into the socket - but it does not work with Maverick or Snow Leopard - can I configure it with a windows pc?

The Mac running Snow Leopard should be able to configure virtually any version of the AirPort Express.
Tell us what steps that you are taking to configure the Express and what happens after each step.

  • Scanner that Works with 10.6 Snow Leopard?

Has anyone found a scanner that works with 10.6 Snow Leopard and also handles 35mm negatives & slides? My HP Scanjet 4570c is “dead in water.” HP has said they will not provide a driver update for this model.

If you, like me, are ****** off about how poorly HP is handling/not handling this scanner functionality issue then I suggest that you email the CEO, Chairman, and the Board of Directors of HP. I just finished sending my email to all of them. You can do the same by going to the web site listed below and follow the instructions on that web page. When I sent my messages I typed, "Do you care that HP is losing customers?" in the SUBJECT line of my email. I seriously doubt that this will result a solution to our problems, but at least you can let them know that they have lost another customer.

  • Airport assistant in 10.8 won't work with airport express

I updated to OS 10.8 from 10.6 and now the airpot utility says that it sees my airport express (about 4 yrs old)  but
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station"  I tried an earlier version of airport utility but it won't work with system 10.8. Does anyone have a work around?

Your Express is most likely over five years old.
You need AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure an older Express. The problem with that version is that Mountain Lion will refuse to let you install it.
This dilemma is easily solved. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist or unpkg. Pacifist is shareware, unpkg is free.
    Download Pacifist here: http://www.charlessoft.com/
    Download unpkg here: http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Download AirPort Utility 5.6 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
When the AirPort Utility .dmg file finishes downloading, open it to expand and reveal the AirPortUtility56.pkg package installer file.
Directions for Pacifist (I do not have screenshots for unpkg but the idea is similar):
Open Pacifist and from its File menu, navigate to the package and open it.
Click the "reveal triangles" until you see AirPort Utility 5.6.app:
Select it and then click Install from Pacifist's toolbar. It will then be installed in your Utilities folder, and you can quit Pacifist.
The most recent version of AirPort Utility included with Mountain Lion should be used to configure 802.11n - capable AirPort Base Stations. Make no attempt to delete it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist. Use the older version only as necessary for older AirPort Base Stations that cannot be administered any other way.
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder instead of resorting to the above procedure. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Keep in mind that Apple's decision to abandon support for your original AirPort Express was for reasons known only to them. Remember that you are using obsolete equipment, should some future OS X feature not work for you.

  • Iphone won't work with airport express

ok, so i've set up a wireless network on my airport express using my imac which has no trouble connecting to the network, however my iphone won't even detect that a network exists. my iphone has no trouble connecting to two unlocked neighborhood networks as does my imac. I set up my own network to be unlocked and have no security but still no dice, my phone still does not detect it. what am I missing?

Hello zacmobile. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) the older 802.11g or newer 802.11n? If the 802.11n version, which radio mode do you have it configured for? The default for the newer AX is "802.11n (b/g compatible)". The the iPhone should work with this mode, but you have the option to change the AX to operate in one of the non-"n" modes, like "802.11g only."

  • Airplay won't work with airport express

I can't get Airplay to work with my airport express since moving to Lion.  The AE shows up on the network, I can select it from either iTunes or my iPhone at the Airplay tab, but neither will connect to it.  Ideas?
Have reset the AE, reinstalled iTunes, etc.

another possibility is that you could be suffering from wireless interference.
perhaps one of your neighbor's wireless networks is interfering with yours. download iStumbler and note the channels other networks in the vicinity are broadcasting on.
change the channel your network is using as far away as possible from those.

  • External iSight mic not working with facetime.  Snow Leopard, mac mini w/ firewire v1.0.2, 800/400 firewire adapter

External iSight camera connected via Firewire adapter 800/400 to a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard - a visual signal comes up for iChat and FaceTime, only sometimes does a video signal comes up for PhotoBooth, always no sound for any of the applications.  System Preferences "Sound" shows "Input Level" set around 75%, however only periodically do I see blue bar move, almost like a short in the cable, but the adapter is new.  Firewire firmware is v1.0.2.  Tried to use firewire updater to get 1.0.3, but updater won't update for Snow Leopard.  For being advertized as the world's most advanced OS, seems like Apple OS could at least work with Apple External iSight camera !  Any help much appreciated on fixing the missing sound.

This means that my Firewire 400 ports on the display are no longer supported by the computer?
They need a FireWire connection to the computer. With older computers, the FireWire cable from the display would plug in to a computer FW400 port to provide the connection. With FW800 only computers, you need the adapter.

  • External hard-disk not working with firewire under Snow Leopard

Hi. I have a LaCie d2 external hard-disk that has Firewire 800, 400 and usb2. I previously used it on my old (angle-poise) iMac connecting using the Firewire 400 socket. I've just a got a new mac with Snow Leopard and I thought it would we best to connect to the LaCie with Firewire 800. However when I do this, the disc mounts ok, but browsing in the Finder is really slow and copying files from the disk to the imac seems to work at a really slow rate (less than USB1 speed) if at all ! However, I switched to using the USB2 connection instead and it works like a dream. What gives ? Is Firewire in Snow Leopard buggy ??

There's no problem with the drive.
Maybe true, and the drive would probably work fine with Leopard. One thing that's obvious is that Apple did make changes in the way that FireWire works in Snow Leopard. Many drives and drive manufacturers work well with SL, but there have also been reports of firmware issues by Western Digital and other companies.
Have you checked with your vendor to see if they are offering a firmware update for your drive?
BTW, I got a new FW case a few months ago while at a Fry's electronic store. The brand new USB2 and FW400 cables worked fine. The FW800 cable did not, but another cable came to the rescue. Just saying...

  • Problem with airport after snow leopard upgrade.

I know there are several threads about this already but none of the "answers" to those threads fix my problem. I just upgraded snow leopard and installed the new update. Since then I can connect to my wifi, but nothing will load. My airport says that I am connected and that I have a full signal, but whenever I open my internet browser (firefox, safari), nothing will load, it just stays on the screen that says "loading" at the top. I've tried deleting the "Automatic" airport option and creating my own but that has not worked. Any suggestions as to how to fix this?? Right now the only way i can access the internet is be plugging directly into the router.

    Hi swftrules,
It's probably worth trying just to ensure that the issue is (or isn't) location specific. Preferably to go somewhere that you've never connected before and has free WiFi without crazy encryption. An Apple Store is a great location to try.
If it does work at the new location, I'd be inclined to reset the router and set it back up (open network) and see if that works and then add encryption from there.
If it doesn't work at the new location, then I'd consider reloading the OS if you've already tried the new network location.

  • Windows PC suddenly won't work with Airport Extreme

Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. We had a storm this past weekend....had to reboot the modem and Airport Extreme. Two of the three computers were back on line with the Airport instantly: my G4 and a Dell PC. The third computer (my work computer and the one I'm writing this posting on) can't talk to the Airport anymore. Have never ever had a problem before. Getting "limited or no connectivity" status. Did "ipconfig" and not getting any reading on DNS Suffix or Default Gateway. My ISP won't help me because I'm not renting their wireless router from them. Please help! Thanks in advance!

  • HP Deskjet F2280 won't work with Airport Express

    Hello.
When I try to add the printer, plugged into the Airport, in the settings, it says "because of a network error it could not get the software." One time it seemed to have worked, but then I could not print. So I deleted the printer again, and now I cannot install the software again.
I cannot print anything on my iPad through airprint, because there are no printers found... What can I do?

I thought I could plug in any printer there and print over the air to the airport express's usb printer...
Not all printers are compatible with the USB port on the AirPort Express....and....AirPrint is a completely separate matter. This is a separate Apple feature that allows an iPad or iPhone to print to an AirPrint compatible printer using wireless.
The printer has to connect to the network using wireless for AirPrint to work....not USB. You might be able to use a separate App like Printopia to allow the iPad to print when the printer is connected to the USB port.
There is a free trial for Printopia, so you will know if it will work before you buy.
Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
But, first things first.  You need to see if you can get printing to work normally first from your Mac....and then try Printopia to see if it will allow the iPad to print.
But the main problem is that it won't download any software... Even when I plug in the printer into my Macbook, it says "searching for software" and then "Cannot download software now, there is a network problem." But I'm clearly connected to the internet so...
Have you tried powering off the MacBook and the AirPort Express?
Have you contacted HP Support to ask them about whether they still support your printer....and whether there any new printer drivers that you could manually download and install?

  • IPhone won't work with Airport Extreme

I got my iPhone when they were released, but I still can't get it to connect to my home's Airport Extreme Wi-Fi network. My software is updated weekly, so I don't think that can be the problem. When I switch the iPhone settings to Wi-Fi, my home network appears, and the Edge icon is replaced with the Airport icon, but when I try to use the connection, it fails and I get this error message: "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server." Can anyone help me with this?

Funny you should mention it... Although I have been using my iPhone for months with various WiFi networks (including my home Airport Extreme network) I did happen to get a little dialogue box this morning with precisely the same error message. I proceeded to reset my iPhone and it happily went back to working just fine, as before.
Reset by holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears in the center of the screen.
If this is waaay obvious, and you already tried it, then never mind... It was worth a try...
