HP Defective Hinges - Envy Notebook

I am very disappointed by HP. I have an Envy M6 that i bought 13mo ago. The hinge started to fail about 2 months ago and unfortunately i didnt do anything about because it simply looked as if the screen plastic body was opening. But last week the hinge supporting the screen came from under the screen which is now supported by 2 wires only.
I read on several forums that this is a known defect from HP and called their support hotline.
I just spent 45mns being clowned around by HP support telling me that because i used the laptop, it is normal that the hinge failed and that they can repair it for $179+taxes (with a loyal customer discount..). I do not take my laptop anywhere, i work from home and have a tablet when i travel. I only open it in the AM and close it at night. So if this type of "intense" usage is what caused the hinge to fail, then maybe HP should price itself a few hundred dollars cheaper. I have had Dell, Apple, Lenovo, Samsung, Compaq etc, i never had a hinge fail.
I thought HP stood by its product. A hinge that fails after 13 months is not due to usage, it's due to poorly engineering or manufacturing. And the customer should not have to pay 30% of the value of the laptop to have it fixed.
Not only that, but to be taken for a fool by their support is ridiculous.
And of course, calling them is uselss as they are barely different than robots spitting the same speech over and over again. I talked to 3 customer support representative/tech support and they all said the same pre written speech. One of them even had the audacity to lie and tell me " I am happy to announce you that i managed to get you a discount", only to tell me the exact same price his colleague had given me out of the box..
Unless i hear back from HP with a reasonable solution, this will be my last HP after 4 different models.

  • Windows 8 setup does not prompt for license key, then fails, on hp envy notebook

    Hi,
I am trying to install Windows 8 pro on an hp envy dv7 notebook, that came with a Windows 8 home pre-installed.
I tried by running the setup from the CD inserted while Windows was running, but setup complained that no license key matched the CD and faled. Strange enough,
setup did not prompt for any license key!
I tried the setup on another, older PC, there it did prompt for license key and setup ended well. At least it was not the CD.
Then I retried booting from setup CD, it loaded files, then started the setup without promptiing for any license key, and failed again.
Then I tried with a Windows 7 CD, same behavior, not prompting for license key and fail to setup.
Then I "repaired" Windows by booting from CD and reformatting the hard drive, dropping all Windows partitions, then restart setup from CD, but it still behaved the same way: not prompting for license key, and failing to setup.
I called the HP support, and they answered that it was a problem for Microsoft (what a good support, the only place where the problem occurs is the hp computer, but let the Customer call Microsoft instead).
So here I am, did any of you use an hp computer, and succeeded in installing Windows 8 PRO NFR from Technet plus on it?

Is it a Chinese Editon preinstalled in HP notebook?
Windows 8 preinstall machine includes a license key in system firmware. So Windows 8 setup will use this key rather than pop up product key input text pop. It is a Microsoft by design issue. So no good mathod to workaround this problem.

  • Replacing keyboard on HP Envy notebook

    Hi,
I recently purchased the HP ENVY 15-j160no-notebook-pc (J1Y22EA)
Overall satisfied with it, but the keyboard annoys me, since it is a Nordic keyboard with shared keys for the special Swedish, Norwegian and Danish characters Æ - Ø - Å - Ö - Ä.
What is annoying is that it looks like the Swedish characters Ö - Ä are the primary ones, and are backlit. The Danish ones are not, and cannot be seen when the keyboard light is turned on.
Is it possible to replace the keyboard with a native Danish one focusing on the Æ - Ø - Å ?

  • Broken hinge ENVY m6

Like may others, I also have a broken hinge on my ENVY m6.  Looking at these posts it seems to be a frequent problem and something HP should stand behind.   I'm out of warranty, but am not ready to purchase a new computer.  How can I get this repaired?

  • Hp Envy notebook where is my hard drive?

I am possibly being very dimwitted but I can't seem to find the full 1TB hard drive that my Hp Envy m6-1115tx notebook should have. When I open the disk drives it only displays 100gb in the C Drive, and the Recovery Drive (along with DVD Drive). Does Windows 8/this model of notebook store the hard drive in a hidden place? I should note the notebook is a display model so the store had to reset it before selling it to me - I am worried they've done something to the hard drive and now I only have a tenth of what I should have.

You should be seeing the whole 1 TB. I bet the people at the store messed up the partitioning of the drive when they wiped it.  Open disk management:
    Here's How:
Swipe up from the Start screen and touch the All apps icon. With a mouse, right-click on the Start screen and click the All apps icon.
On the Apps screen, scroll or swipe toward the right and locate Windows System.
Click on or touch Control Panel, located under the Windows System category.
Windows 8 open Control Panel on the Desktop.
Click on or touch the System and Security link.
Note: You won't see System and Security if your Control Panel view is set to Small icons or Large icons. If you are on one of those views, just touch or click on Administrative Tools and then skip to Step 6.
In the System and Security window, click or touch the Administrative Tools heading, located at or near the bottom of the screen. You may need to scroll down to see it.
With Administrative Tools now open, double-tap or double-click on Computer Management.
With Computer Management now open, click or touch Disk Management, located on the left-hand side of the Computer Management window, under the Storage heading. If you don't see it, you may need to expand Storage by clicking or touching the |> icon next to it.
Disk Management may take several seconds to load but will eventually appear to the right.
You can now format a hard drive, change a drive's letter, or whatever other task you were planning from Windows 8's Disk Management utility.
If you know how to take a screen shot do it and post it but you may see a disk (likely disk 0) which has a big blank space in it. Take a look and post back. If only part of the drive is partitioned you can enlarge the existing partition or make a new partition which will then take a new drive letter.

  • Wifi drops constantly on brand new HP Envy Notebook.

I've always thought so highly of HP and as such, decided to purchase an HP laptop - an HP Envy 15-K233ca Notebook. I have had some issues from the start and one in particular, is making for a rather unpleasant experience. The wifi connection keeps dropping.  It drops when the system is put in sleep mode, when I surf the net and even after a reboot.   I walked through the issue (and a few others) with HP's  help desk this evening and after 2 hours was met with the same problem.  I am now having to reboot the computer and troubleshoot to try and maintain a wifi connection.  This is my first experience with an HP Laptop and I'm disappointed.  It's unfortunate, but I may have to return it.  I'll be walking over to Apple for a replacement.   If someone from HP can resolve this for once and for all, it would be helpful. Otherwise, I will have no choice but to return the unit. Note:  I've noticed that others experience the same issue.  I requested that HP's Help Desk install drivers to resolve the issue.  If this didn't work after our session this evening, then I'm afraid it may be a hardware issue.

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 15-k233ca Notebook and issues with the WiFi dropping constantly. Try this fix.
Go to device manager, the Network adapters WiFi driver properties power management
Allow this computer to turn off wifi to save power, uncheck it and restart the Notebook. Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Broken hinge envy 15 j-150

I purchased this touchscreen laptop for my son as a high school graduation gift 7 months ago.  This afternoon he turned on the laptop to finish his essay, and got an error saying there was a cooling fan issue.  I then noticed that the left hinge bulges and starts to open the case as the screen is opened.  Could this be the cause of the fan issue, as well?  How do I go about getting this repaired under warranty (it is less than 1 yr old)?
    Thanks!

  • HP ENVY 15 Notebook needs new battery

So the battery is dead on my HP Envy Notebook 15 (Product number: A9P58UAR#ABA). The battery model is the HP LR08XL. I believe the battery is dead because the power light is white and blinking, the computer can't detect the battery anymore no matter what I use to try to identify it, and the monitor and keyboard lights immediately go black if the power cord gets unplugged for even a moment. I've even tried some restart tricks that I've seen recommended on forums about HP Envy models. I just want to install a new battery. The main problem I see right now is that I don't know how to remove this kind of battery and have read it may have been "factory sealed" or something (why would they do that?). Anyway, how do I change the battery in the model above? Thanks!

I have read your post on how your notebook computer is not able to power on after charging it in a different electrical outlet, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To return your notebook to a functional state again, I recommend following this document on Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank (Windows 8). This resource should help to power on your notebok.
Additionally, I also recommend testing the battery and AC adapter of your computer by following this document on Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 8), as well as Using and Testing the AC Power Adapter. This should help to test the power coming to your computer, as well as testing the battery in the event the computer powers on.

  • Apple macbook air hinge defect -closing lid is considered accidental damage

    Hi Apple
Is closing the screen normal operations of the macbook air?
my apple air has a defect with the hinge. could apple please change your policy to accept hinge as warrant on apple air models
purchased my air 28/2/2008 from Sydney Broadway apple shop. I think this was the first day they got delivery in Sydney.
Last week when closing the screen, it was about half way down, it made a crack noise, and the hinge moved. (see photo from link below)
I have been to two apple care centres in Saigon, Vietnam this week. Spoke to apple in singapore and usa. They all told me i broke it and the damage is accidental. Offically on paper it was "it might be accidental damage, warranty repair declined"
Many people have had this problem, mostly in USA.
Below is the link to a post i made on the problem. It has a photo of my laptop hinge, it is not as bad as others, because i stopped using the air as soon as it happened

PS. Apple Air is the BEST laptop yet for me personally. light, 13" screen, full size keyboard, multitouch huge touch pad, nice casing, no dvd player and osx
    I have owned these laptops:
    compact portable iii
    dell latitude d600
    toshiba portege 3500 tablet
    fujitsu lifebook p7010
    motion ls800 tablet
    apple macbook air

If I can add my two cents... Mine broke just like the others on this thread, and almost like everybody else, the first genius I consulted with told me that it was accidental damage and that they won't cover it. I left the Apple Store and called Apple customer service, explained the situation, including the fact a 1800 $ computer shouldn't broke without reason, that there was multiple people on the internet with the same problem... a few days later, Apple called me to say that they will cover the display change under warranty. Still, i'm not impressed :
    - The attitude of the first genius was very arrogant, telling me that I shouldn't try to "steal from Apple" by trying to cover accidental damage...
    - When I got my MacBook Air back, the genius told me that they did put a new hinge design in there, which feels much more sturdy indeed. So if Apple changed the hinge design, they know there was a problem with the hinge, but they still won't change your failed hinge unless you complain : what kind of customer service is that ?
I'm feeling a class action over those first gen MacBook Air, really... 1800 $ gets you a computer that doesn't perform (kernel_task problem), with failing hardware (hinge defect).
By the way... mine have also a decoloration of the trackpad that Apple won't cover because they say it's "cosmetic". How ironic from a company who charge big preniums for design not to cover "cosmetic" issues.
