HP Deskjet 5440 wiper shift plate

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this question but here goes: The wiper shift plate is not in the correct position so my printer so the ink cartridges get stuck on the right side and the printer will not print. Is it possible for me to adjust the wiper shift plate to the correct position by myself, do I need to get it serviced, or do I need to get a replacement printer?

Hello @Curly-Q,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're experiencing a Carriage Jam on your HP Deskjet 5440 Photo Printer. I see that you have completed all of the troubleshooting steps found here on the HP website for this hardware issue. Normally this issue is caused by the wiper shift plate being positioned incorrectly; however, you indicate that the wiper shift is in the correct position. Thank you for including this in your original post.
I did check into a potential Firmware Programming Update, as this issue can also be caused by a programming issue within your printer. However, due to the age of this product, no such Firmware Updates are available.
The only step left would be to replace the whole product. I would highly recommend that you contact our Technical Support queue by phone to explore hardware replacement options. Due to the age of your printer you may be able to upgrade this older model Deskjet to the newer version of the printer at a discounted price.

  • DESKJET 5440 "CARRIAGE IS STALLED"

HELP HIGHLY APPRECIATED - DESKJET 5440, s/n [Personal Information Removed],  an oldie but goody without any problem until now when I receive a computer message saying "THE CARRIAGE IS STALLED". It is stuck on the right when plugged in. Carriage does not move to the left after nudging it with power on. It does go to the left without power.  The wiper shift is in the correct position as pictured in help page.  I have done all of the troubleshooting listed in message like unplugged everything waited and plugged back in directly in the wall. I reinstalled the ink cartridges, there is nothing blocking that I can see. I have looked for hair, fuzz, lint,  etc. and removed extra ink build up, still no resolve. No one in town will even look at this printer because of its age
CAN ANYONE SOLVE THIS PUZZLE? I LOVE THIS PRINTER.

  • I can not print web pages with my HP Deskjet 5440

I can not print web pages with my HP Deskjet 5440.  I use Vista, no error page, just prints a blank page with headers and footers.  Recently reinstalled printer driver from HP.

Hello , Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that since upgrading your Mac OS X 10.10 computer to Mac OS X 10.10.4 you have been unable to print colour photos wirelessly from your HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this colour printing issue. To be honest, it does sound like Mac may have loaded the generic Apple Airprint driver on your printer rather then the HP Full Feature Software and Driver package. Should this be the case then you will only have basic print capabilities. Please follow the steps below to confirm that your HP Officejet is utilising the correct driver on your Mac.
    1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences. 2. Click Print & Scan, and then check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list. 3. Click the name of your printer, click the minus sign (), and then delete the printer.  4. Click the plus sign (), click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, 5. Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu. Ensure that the Officejet driver is selected and not the Airprint driver.
      6. Click Add to add the printer to the list.  Once your printer has been installed with the correct HP driver, please test printing a colour photo to confirm that the issue has been resolved. Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Should the issue persist there are additional software and driver troubleshooting steps I will have you perform. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • HP Deskjet 5440 need update for Windows 7

I have just updated to new computer with Windows 7 and having problems getting my HP Deskjet 5440 printer to work. Can I get an upgrade software driver to do this?

The Driver Wizard at http://www.hp.com/go/tools may help resolve the issue.  The driver is delivered through Windows Update as described in this document.

    Dear All,
My printer make a hard (crash?) sound when being operated. How to fix it? The printer is HP Deskjet 5440.
    Thank you

Does the carriage (the part that holds the print cartrdiges) bang into the sides of the printer?  If so then cleaning the encoder strip as described in this post may help.

  • HP Deskjet 5440 Status page pop-up to align printer

I'm running Vista on my HP system and just installed the Deskjet 5440 printer. The problem is that I keep getting a pop-up to "align" my printer. The 'Help" button on on the pop-up is non-functional. How can I get this pop-up from comming up needlessly????
    This question was solved.

The alignment prompts should stop once an alignment has completed.  Normally the alignment will complete automatically when a new cartridge is installed.  The alignment can fail if the color cartrdige is not printing cyan or under certain other conditions.  Can you go to the printer toolbox and request an alignment?

  • Deskjet 5440

I tried just about everything and still get the flashing resume light with error saying that the right cartridge is the problem and yesterday it was the left so I replaced the left and today it is the right!!!

Did you ever solve this problem.  I bought a new computer in December 2009 with Windows 7 - 64 bit, and my HP Deskjet 5440 worked fine until January 24, 2011.  Now it is doing the same thing you described.  I can't figure out a solution.

  • Need Deskjet 5440 software so I can align printer

I switched computers and no longer have the HP software that will allow me to align my Deskjet 5440.  Does anyone know how I can obtain this software?  (Or, how I can align my pages without the software if that's possible?)  I have Windows 8.  Thanks!

Thank you for the link.  I found this information regarding my Deskjet 5440 and Windows 8:
Aligning the cartridges No workaround at this time.
Does this mean I cannot align the cartridges since I now have Windows 8?  Will a workaround ever be available?
    Thank you for your help!

  • Deskjet 5440 problem

I have Deskjet 5440 which used to work properly with my old Win XP machine. I now have a Dell Studio 1555 laptop with Win 7 64-bit version. (I also have an older HP desktop with Win 7 that I want to use with this printer) The printer does show up under Printer & Devices but it is called "HP Deskjet 5400 Series".
When I send a print job to this printer, it will sit in the queue for a while, the printer will go off-line and then a printer error shows up. If I run the Win 7 Troubleshooter, it does not solve the problem. In the Troubleshooter I have tried
to make this printer my default, no success
to turn it off and on, no success
I do have the original installation CD, but I have not used it on the Win 7 laptop. So far nothing will print, not even the Test page.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

  • New ink cartridge alignment test Deskjet 5440

I got a new computer and plugged in my old Deskjet 5440. I downloaded and installed the recommended driver from the HP support website. I then replaced the color and black ink cartridges. On my last computer when I changed cartridges I was asked if I wanted to align them. This time (twice) I was not.
How do I run an alignment test?

    Hi @KroebY,
Welcome to the HP support Forums! I see you have replaced the black cartridge on your HP Deskjet 1010, but it is not registering the new cartridge. You are unable to copy or print, you can make a scan. I notice you said your DJ 1010 was not compatible with the Windows 8.1 Operating system, there are full feature software and drivers available for your printer.
Let's start troubleshooting the print quality issues: Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Deskjet Ink Advantage an...
Does this help, are you now able to print and make a copy? If yes, continue below:
    Now, the software:
    1. Unplug the USB if using a direct connection.
    2. Remove the HP DJ 1010 software from your computers Control Panel's Uninstall a program option.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Make sure all the DJ 1010 software is gone from the programs list as well as your HP folder listed under the All programs in your Start Menu.
    5. Now go ahead and download the software and drivers for your DJ 1010 (DO NOT plug in USB until the software prompts you to):
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=dj-117518-4&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
    6. Go ahead and print a test page.
    7. If you are unable to print a test page, please run the HP Print and Scan Doctor- It was designed by HP to provide users with the troubleshooting and problem solving features needed to resolve many common problems experienced with HP print and scan products connected to Windows-based computers.
Please let me know if you are not able to print, and if the installation was successful.  I will watch for your reply.

  • Deskjet 5440 stopped printing wirelessly from my MacBook Pro after upgrading to OS 10.8

My home printer is connected by cable to a desktop Mac (Power Mac G5).  I have always printed wirelessly to it from my MacBook Pro laptop through our home wireless network.  However, just recently I upgraded the operating system on my laptop to 10.8.2.  At the same time, I upgraded the HP driver software (from HP) that is supposed to allow the 5440 to work with the new OS.  Since then, I can print from my laptop if it is connected by cable to the printer, but not wirelessly.  When I attempt to print wirelessly, get a message that says the printer is not connected.

So you are using Printer Sharing on the PowerMac?  If so, on the PowerMac, go to System Preferences > Print & Fax and delete the printer with the '-' sign at the bottom of the printer list.  Re-add it with the '+' sign.
Make sure that Printer Sharing is checked and that in System Preferences > Sharing that Printer Sharing is also checked there.
Now, on the MacBook Pro, go to System Preferences > Print & Scan and click the '+' sign to add the printer.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
