HP Deskjet 720C

Have a new Dell inspiron 1545 computer and an HP deskjet 720C printer.  The printer shows ready for printing but none of the articles sent to it appear in Q and the computer is not communicating with the printer...???

What operating system?  Is it 32 bit or 64 bit?
If you have 64 bit Vista or Windows 7 you will need to apply the patch shown here.
For either 32 bit or 64 bit versions the next most common issue is the use of a USB-parallel converter cable, as most recent computers do not have parallel ports and the Deskjet 720 series did not support USB.  If you are using a USB-parallel cable make sure that it is supported by your operating system and you have the correct drivers for the cable (in addition to the drivers for the printer).  The posts flagged here are from users who have reported a particular brand working for Windows 7.   The next thing to check would be the port assignment.  The USB-parallel cables typically supply a "Virtual printer port", typically on USB001: or USB002:. Check your cable's documentation (if available) for information on selecting the proper port.

  • Install DeskJet 720C in compatibility mode in Windows 8.1

    Hi
I have a Deskjet 720C than work fine on my Window 7 64 bit system.
Now I want to use it on a Windows 8.1 64 bit system.
The driver installed with Windows Update does not work.
Can I install it in compatibility mode?
    How do I do that?
There is no driver installation file that I can set into compatibility mode, but only the Window Update way of getting the driver.
    What do I do?
    Jens

The Deskjet 720c driver does not work in Windows 8.1 x64 and there is currently not any workaround that I know of.  The 32 bit version of the driver will work in 32 bit Windows 8 or 8.1 systems.  The patch available here for 64 bit versions of Vista and Windows 7 does not work in Windows 8 or 8.1.  I would suggest you subscribe to that thread, if any workaround is developed it would be posted there.

  • Deskjet 720C ques but doesn't print

Old reliable 720C ques info to be printed but printer does not activate and produce hard copy.  Am running SP.  Have latest driver installed. Have gone through all inventoried printer ports with no activation of printer or document production.  No other issues apparent.  Would appreciate assistance.  Thank you.

I would suggest downloading and running the HP Printing Diagnostic Utility.  I suspect the issue is with the port selected.  Are you using a standard parallel port (cable with large connector on the computer side and larger on the printer) or do you have a USB-parallel connection (small flat connector on computer side)?  In most cases LPT1:  would be the proper parallel port.

  • HP 720c in windows 7 64bit "out of paper"

Added the driver for the 720 c I found on this site. Windows 7 shows the printer and says it is working properly. It is connected to the PC via a parallel port card in a pci-e slot. Shows on port LPT1 and no conflicts are seen. When  I print to this printer the document shows in the queue but does not print out and after about 2 mins the queue shows "out of paper". I have also tried it as LPT2: with the same results. When I put the printer back on the XP machine it prints fine. Why do I get the "out of paper" error in windows 7 when it is full of paper?

    Hello Talyn16,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your concerns with your Deskjet 720C. Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
We want to fix the "Out Of Paper" error message first before we move on. Please follow this HP document on 'Out of Paper' Error Message Displays on the Computer, and the Printer Does Not Pick Up or Feed Pape...
When performing a "Reset", leave the power cord out for more than 60 seconds.
Let me know how your progress goes.

  • Deskjet 720 Series, need patch for 32 bit Windows 7, same problem as 64 bit

I have been frustrated trying to get my Deskjet 720C printer to work with Windows 7. I saw that the 64 bit problem was solved but it says not for the 32 bit. Why can't it be used on the 32 bit? And what should I do? Thanking you in advance. Mo

The 64 bit version of the drivers for the Deskjet 710/720/810/820/1000 series printers do not work properly as delivered and a patch is required, available here.  This patch works for Vista and Windows 7, there is no patch available for Windows 8 at this time.
The 32 bit version of Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 do not require a patch, the delivered driver works.  The usual issue with the 32 bit version is the port connection.  The Deskjet 720c only had a parallel port and most WIndows 7 machines only have USB ports.  There are USB-Parallel converter cables available, but these can be problematic.  If you are using a USB-parallel converter cable you will need to make sure you have one that is compatible with Windows 7.  The models mentioned in the posts here have been tested to work by folks in the forum.
If you have not resolved the issue please provide some additional details of the problem you are seeing, including how the printer is connected (parallel cable or USB-parallel cable), how the driver wwas installed and any error messsages you see.

  • DESKJET 722C DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 7

I RECENTLY UPGRADED TO AN HP PAVILION. MY PRINTER IS AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE 722C. I BOUGHT AN ADAPTER CABLE TO CONVERT THE 25 PIN CONNECTOR ON THE PRINTER CABLE TO A USB CONNECTOR. I TRIED HP'S WEB SITE TO GET A DRIVER AND HP SAYS THEY DON'T HAVE A DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 7. DOES ANYONE  HAVE A SUGGESTION ON HOW TO PROCEED FROM HERE BESIDES DEEP SIXING MY 722 AND BUYING A NEW PRINTER ?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Sorry, but the above will not work.  The Deskjet 722 is a host based printer and is not compatible with the Deskjet 6980 driver.
You can install the driver as follows:  connect the printer with the USB-parallel converter.  Click on Start, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, Local Printer and select the proper port. When the list of printers appears click on Windows Update and wait a few minutes for the list to repopulate*.  Once the list repopulates select HP as the manufacturer (not Hewlett-Packard) and select the Deskjet 720c driver, Next.
Do you have a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 7?  If you have a 64 bit Windows 7 you will need a patch as the supplied driver crashes the spooler.  After installing the printer (but before printing anything, including a test page) install the patch available here.
    * Edit - If you get an error "Windows was unable to get a list..." when you click on the Windows Update button then see the workaround here.

  • Deskjet printer woes

I have a 720C deskjet printer.  Yes, it is old but it works well, or did until we got Vista. The instalation CD says it works for windows 3.1x, Windows 95, and windows NT 4.0.    It had been working on windows XP home edition and I think when it was set up that we got dsome sort of update-patch-fixer from the HP website.
At present my computer is correctly identifying the printer, it comes on and the paper will begin to feed, it makes the "I'm ready" noise and then it just sits there with its little green light blinking away.
Is there anything I can do?  I'm not geeky.

This reply is to: Bob Headrick, Microsoft MVP Printing/Imaging
Bob, thank you for trying to help me with this issue.
Your hyperlink. which leads to the instructions for "Installing the Printer Driver Located in the Windows Vista Operating System" is exactly what I did.  I've followed your instructions again so that I can provide you with the details of what's happening:
    1.  "Installing the Printer Driver Located in the Windows Vista Operating System" gives two choices depending upon the type of cable you are using.  I went the route
of "USB Cable".  The reason for this choice is that with Windows XP, I was using a Parallel cable on a computer that had a Parallel port and the printer worked
fine.  I've since gone to a new computer that does not have a Parallel port, and thus, purchased a USB to IEEE 1284 Parallel Printer Cable.
[By the way, I'm using this exact same type USB to Parallel printer cable for my HP LaserJet 2100 on the new computer running Vista 64 and the LJ2100 works
          just fine.]
    2.  After the printer has been turned on and I connect the cable, I get a "Driver Software Installation" popup that says:
"HEWLETTPACKARDDESKJET 720C ... Searching Windows Update"
A few seconds later the popup updates with "Installing Driver Software"
Just a few seconds after that the popup updates with "Ready to use"
    3.  I then open up the Printers folder.  It shows the 720C in "Ready" state.
    4.  I then right-click the 720C, select "Properties" from the dropdown and click on the button "Print Test Page"
    5.  A popup entitled "HP DeskJet 720C" indicates "A test page has been sent to your printer" however, the green light on the printer doesn't flash, there is no noise
coming from the printer (like it's about to print), and no test page prints.
    6.  I get similar results if I go to Microsoft Word to print a document.  The print queue shows that the document is spooling and then the document quickly disappears
         from the print queue.
I hope these details help you in helping me!  Thanks so much!

Rather than use SMB to connect from Lion to the Windows XP printer share, a better method is to enable Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP and then use LPD on the Mac to print via the Windows share.
To install Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP:
Log on to the Windows server with an administrative-level account.
Start the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
    Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
Click Other Network File and Print Services, and then click Details.
Click to select the Print Services for UNIX check box, and then click OK.
Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation
If you haven't done so already, share the printer on Windows XP and make the name one word - no spaces or special characters
With the print services enabled you can then create the printer queue on Lion.
Open Print & Scan and click + to add a printer
Select the IP icon and set the protocol to Line Printer Daemon - LPD
For the Address, enter the IP address of the Windows XP computer
For the Queue name, enter the share name set for the printer in Windows XP
Name and Location are free text so you can set this to something meaningful
For the Print Using menu, select the supporting printer driver. Note that like connections via SMB, the vendors driver for Lion in some cases cannot be used and an alternate like those offered by the Gutenprint suite must be used.
Click the OK button to complete the queue creation.
Now you are ready to test the new print queue.

  • I own a photosmart b9180, it's hp's red headed stepchild

Every article in every pc mag always said "buy the best printer you can, you'll save in the long run on consumables".
I bet they never owned the b9180, lol. I paid $695 for the printer.
To fill it up with ink, it's 8 cartridges at $38.95 each, about $320. for ink.
I own a great scale, and when the cartriges tell the printer it's empty & it stops printing, I always weigh the "empty" cartridges.
There is always a 10-15 gram difference in these empty cartridges, don't make sense.
Last week I get an error message- can't print, replace 1 of the printheads.
So I call hp, buy the new printhead, install it & guess what?
I get a message that 2 other printheads need to be replaced.
So I call hp & order the remaining 3 printheads, b/c I don't want to install the 2 that were faulty & then get a message to
replace the fourth & final one.
So I install the other 3 printheads, the printer goes through it's half hour wakeup routine, aligments, calibrations etc.
Now when the problem first started last week I had all new ink cartridges installed, but by going though printhead cleanings, deep printhead cleanings, alignments & calibrations on the old printheads, then doing it when I installed the first new printhead, then doing it again when I installed the other 3 new printheads almost all the cartridges were empty.
So I get another set of new hp cartridges, put em in, and then I get a message that my grey cartridge, which is 5 minutes old is "either missing, damaged, or empty". I wanna kill myself.
Now tech support told me these printheads are designed to last 18 months. Are you serious?
I bet that little tid bit wasn't in their advertising/marketing brochures. Let me see- spend $600-700 for the printer,
spend $320 every time you need new ink, and after 18 months replace the printheads for $240.
What can I do? Someone already told me to use it as a boat anchor, so come up with something else.
I also own the 8550 wide format & b209 photosmart all in one. I purchased these 2 printers 8 months ago b/c I got tired of
what it cost to fill up the b9180. The ink for the other 2 printers is reasonable, plus they both take the same cartridge, so it gives me a little flexability.
Tech support told me they would sell me their new 7500 wide format all in one for $166, to make up for the b9180.
I said hey guys, your website has it for $179. where is the bargain? Plus I told them I recently purchased the 8550 & b209 b/c at that time hp didnt make a wide format all in one. So they want to sell me a wide format all in one. Nice, but then what do I do with the 8550 & b209? All I want from tech support is to make the 9180 work but they tell me it's printer failure.
Printer failure????? A $650 printer with $240 worth of new printheads, and $320 worth of new ink, and printer failure.
My heart is ready to fail.
    Can anyone help me please.
BTW, I also own 2 13 yr old desk jet 722c's and NEVER had a problem with them. Only hp didn't write drivers for windows 7 so I can only use them with my windows xp system.

There are Windows 7 drivers for the Deskjet 722c  (720 series), they were written by HP and are delivered through Windows Update.  If you have the Deskjet 722 connected to your XP machine you could share it and then do the following:  on the Windows 7 machine go to the Devices and Printers folder, Add a Printer, Local Printer, Create a Port, Local Port, \\Computername\Printername (use the actual share name for the computer and printer), OK, then click on Windows Update and select HP for the manufacturer and HP Deskjet 720c.
If you have a 64 bit version of Windows 7 you will need to apply the patch here.

Do you have the 32 bit or 64 bit version of WIndows 7?   For the 32 bit version go to the Devices and Printers folder, Add a Printer, LPT1:, select Windows Update then add the driver for the Deskjet 720c.
Currently the 64 bit driver does not properly work, I am hoping to have a workaround for this later this week.

  • Will older printer work on Mac Leopard?

I have an HP deskjet 720c - HP says there is no software or drivers for Mac OS X10.5 Leopard, but if I get a parallel->USB converter cable, will this printer work on my mac?

If it does not have a USB port to begin with, probably not. The adapter cable itself may need a driver so that the OS understands how to use it.
The standard Mac OS X printer driver installation has a large set of open source "Gutenprint" drivers for older printers. I use an old Epson Stylus Photo 750 with one of these drivers, and it works quite well for such an old printer. I did not see one for an HP Deskjet 720c listed, but another Gutenprint driver for a similar HP printer may work. But you'd have to get an adapter cable to try it; inkjet printers are pretty cheap these days, so it may be better just to get a new one that you know will be compatible (as well as work much better than that old one).

  • Blocked Inkjet

My printer is a DeskJet 720C, and my colour cartridge, HP1823, an unused original, which has been in storage for a while, and is now out of  warranty, has it's Magenta inkjet blocked completely.  The Yellow and Cyan jets were also blocked when I first tried it, but they soon  flowed and printed as normal after a few minutes in a bath of hot water plus rubbing alcohol.
Would a blast of air help?  I could take the cartridge with me next time one of my tyres needs to be inflated!  Thank you!
    This question was solved.

Blowing air from an air compressor would likely damage the printhead.  You might try putting the printhead in an inch of very hot water for a few minutes, but most likely you will just need a fresh #23 cartridge.

I've gotten the Extreme to work either way, PPPoE or Ethernet.
Sorry, but that doesn't make any sense. If your ISP requires PPPoE, then the AEBSn MUST be configured for PPPoE in order to gain Internet access UNLESS your Netopia is providing it. The fact that you are getting a Double NAT error is still telling me that both the Netopia and the AEBSn is configured with NAT enabled.
However, neither mode seems to allow my printer to be seen.
... and you are right here in that you don't need to have Internet access to share the printer BUT if you have a Double NAT condition present, then network clients on the WAN-side of the AEBSn will not be able to "see" the printer. Only those network clients directly connected to the AEBSn by wire or wireless should be able to see it. I assume when using the AirPort Utility, the utility recognizes the printer ... correct? If so, and you have your computer connected directly to the AEBSn by Ethernet, can it see it now?
