  • Hard drive detected but will not boot Windows Vista or recovery disk

    Hi,
I have a very similar issue with a HP Pavillion a6355.uk, the hard drive kept crshing windows and then it finally just kept getting pass the HP boot menu options, and then all I get is the DOS "@press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
The hard drive is detected and passes all the tests, after pressing F9, going into the F10 options. F11 does not do anything, so cannot recover windows/the system.
I have tried changing the SATA connections on the motherboard, no difference. I tried the recovery boot disk I created when it was working and it will not boot with the old or new hard drive I bought to replace it (same size and compatable).
I cannot find where to partition the new hard drive or format the c: on the old one (it had D: for the recovery, but as it won't boot, cannot access this).
I have also tried the HP website to dowload the drivers for the new one, but the page does not load up to show any drivers or Windows to download.
    http://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/HP-Pavilion-a6300-Desktop-PC-series/3644673/model/3671505/driver...
The next page just keeps looping or not proceeding when I put in details.
I can’t find anywhere to get hold of my copy of windows vista for this PC or get a disk to re-install on a new drive or fix the old detected drive, can someone please help!!

Just what size HD and is the drive Sata II or Sata III?
Vista 32bit .iso    You must have a valid installation key, which should be on the COA sticker on the computer, to activate the installation once it completes.  ImageBurn to create the .iso disk.   Driver page Vista (not 64 bit)

  • Equium will not boot - how to access Recovery partition?

Hi, my sister has a 2008 Equium A200-1V0 with Vista 32-bit which will not boot (probably due to virus rootkit damage). It loads the BIOS but then goes straight to black screen with flashing cursor.
    F8 does not work.
F2 goes to Phoenix TrustedCore Setup utility. The Toshiba hard drive and CD-ROM drive are listed in Main and Boot in the correct order.
Using F12 I can get it to boot from a Win7 64-bit repair disc I burned using my laptop.
However, this does not recognise the OS nor any image or restore points (because it is 64-bit) but it will load Command Prompt.
In *Command Prompt*, I can start Notepad and when I click File/ Open and double click on Computer it shows 4 Hard drives as follows:
    Local Disk (C:)
Data (D:) 42 GB free of 54.5 GB
WinRE (E:) 1.11 GB free of 1.46 GB
Boot (X:) 29.0 MB free of 31.5 MB (which is used by the Repair disc)
So the C: drive is listed but without capacity.
    *CHKDSK*
chkdsk c: /r and press return
"The type of the file system is NTFS.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.
Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50.
    *Running TESTDISK*
    Analysis:
Partition Start End Size in Sectors
    1 P Windows RE(store) 0 32 33 191 89 26 3072000
    2 * HPFS - NTFS 191 89 27 7477 118 1 117051392
    3 P HPFS - NTFS 7477 118 2 14592 190 62 114307072 (data)
    * = Primary bootable
When doing Quick Search and then P - list files, of the second partition it reports:
"Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged."
So what I would like to do is boot up from Windows Restore on the E drive.
My question is to any Toshiba experts: When F8 does not work how do I use the recovery partition???
    Laptop is:
    Part Number : PSAF5E-002005KS
    Key Features
    - Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor T2310
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
    - DVD Super Multi (Double Layer) drive
    - 2,048 (1,024 + 1,024) MB RAM (667 MHz)
    - 15.4 " WXGA TFT display 1,280 x 800

    *UPDATE*:
I have borrowed a genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit dvd and booted up with that.
    Clicked on "Repair your Computer"
Then it goes striaght to System recovery Options but no Operating System is shown. Click Next.
    Then:
    "Choose a Recovery Tool.
Operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk"
    *Startup Repair*
    This takes 1 second.
    Root cause found
System volume on disk is corrupt.
    *System Restore*
"X - To Perform an offline System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation you would like to restore.
For example, if the installation located in "C:\Windows" should be restored enter the following command:
    rstrui.exe /OFFLINE:C:\Windows "
    *Windows Complete PC Restore*
" No valid backup locations could be found.
Windows cannot find a backup on the hard disks or DVDs on this computer. Attach the correct hard disks or insert the last backup DVD and then start the restore process again. "
    Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Windows cannot check for memory problems...[snip]
    *Command Prompt*
    This is working fine.
    CHKSDK C:
The type of file system is NTFS.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.
The HDD is 120 GB and is split by Toshiba into 3 partitions.
C:\ drive (56GB) is bootable with Windows - this is corrupted.
D:\ drive (55 GB) has all Data - fully accessible
    E:\ drive is CDROM
F:\ drive (1.46 GB) is the WinRE recovery partition - this is fully accessible.
So my question still remains: can I recover my Toshiba laptop using this recovery partition?
PLEASE NOTE: as mentioned above, pressing F8 during boot has no effect and therefore Safe Mode cannot be accessed.

What do you see on the screen when it doesn't boot??
Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar
    or
    Folder with question mark issue?
How did you restore from your old hard drive?
Technically all that was needed was to use Migration Assistant on the fresh OS X install to migrate users accounts and programs to the new machine.
You can use a SATA to USB adapter to connect the old drive if you want to go that way and start over with a fresh install again on the new drive.

  • My MacBook is hung up on "safe boot mood" and shuts off. I have tried everything on this site to fix and no go. Will not boot from external start up disc either. Any help, please.

I also just installed 10.6.3 Leopard.

Hey Don, did you try to shut down the MBP (if necessary by forcing it to, done by keeping the power button pressed for more than 5 seconds) and then restarting while keeping the Command-button pressed to bring up the available boot disks, then select the install CD?
Maybe it lost power during installation and thus the HDD is shot. Did you back up before doing the new install? Do you have a second Mac you can connect the MBP via Firewire to, which means you could try target disc mode (press T and keep it pressed during startup)?

  • Ibook will not boot into OS or off disc

I have a G3/500 ibook, it turns on and the display seems fine, but it won't boot into the OS on the HD or off a disc. I replaced the HD with one which i know works, still nothing, so i booted with volume select from a firewire dvd drive (the cd drive on the ibook is dead) it shows the HD and its name as well as the OSX disc or tech tool pro disc thats in the drive, but when i click on any of them, it restarts the volume select screen. Anyone know what my problem is or how to fix it? Thanks!

You need to select the startup volume you want and then click on the straight arrow button (not the circular one). Clicking on the circular button searches for startup volumes again, and it sounds like that is what is happening.

  • IMac 2009 will not boot up 16gb ram

Mac will not boot up have tried safe mode d mode and resetting
The prim. Command opt PR.  Ideas or am I on the way to getting a new hard drive ?

Did the problems start after upgrading the OS? If so you could try:
    a) Re-applying the update using the 'combo', if you haven't already. The combo contains all revisions to the OS since 10.8.0 in one update package and sometimes helps resolve odd behaviour after an update.
    or
    b) completely re-install the OS using the Recovery HD (re-installing the OS won't delete you data):

Whatever you decide to do, ensure you have up-to-date tested backup of all your data by way of Time Machine or a clone. I doubt you'll need it, but it's an essential requirement so that you can roll back to a previous state in the unlikely event of things going wrong.

  • V3-5727105 will not boot up from HDD or from Recovery CD.

4 weeks ago when I switched on my laptop I got a blue screen message during start-up saying a problem had been encountered and it needed to restart to try to fix the problem, then just a dark grey screen and nothing.Laptop is only 7 months old.  Contacted Tech Support and they stated I needed Recovery CDs and provided me with a set after I paid £60.Tried to boot from Recovery CD and got Acer Recovery Management to load, but after selecting restore to factory settings the laptop entered into a never ending cycle of 'analysing HDD' , attempting to fix HDD'.Left the laptop running for 12 hours and that was the only two messages I saw on the screen. No option to 'exit as problem encountered' so I had to power down my laptop to escape the 'loop'.Tech Support now wants me to try to format my HDD by taking my laptop to a local PC repair shop. Why am I being asked to do all the diagnosis work on a 7 month old PC?  Surely it should be fixed under the manufacturers warranty?Could someone please explain what trying to format my HDD will show? Thanks

Update ..... My laptop would not boot up from the recovery disc as it turned out the hard drive required to be re-formatted to clear the fault. I was told by the PC Repair company that no matter what I tried I would not have been able to fix/clear the fault.  Given it appears to have been a software corruption issue, after reading the Acer Warranty I have found out that I have to pay for the repair as the machine hardware remains in g.w.o. and the laptop is back in full working order once again. The PC Repair man did say however that if I had phoned him first instead of Acer Technical Support, I would not have needed to pay Acer for the set of Recovery discs as he would have provided a fresh installation of Win 8.1. at a fraction of the price!  Lesson learned.

    Hi JACOBfromINSIDEaLION,
If you are unable to get your iPhone to restore, you will want to perform a restore from recovery mode, as explained in the following article:

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • HT1752 my powerbook g4 will not boot up. i get a blue screen. i have tried to start up in safe mode, but get the same blue screen.

My Powerbook G4 (with Snow Leopard operating system) will not boot up, I get a blue screen. I have tried to start up in safe mode by holding down shift key after startup tone, but end up with same result...blue screen. I need important photos and documents of this laptop, Even if I can just get it started up one more time. Need help fast! If you know what to do, please message back.

In the text you say you are using Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard will not operate on a G4 (or any Mac with a PowerPC processor). Leopard OS 10.5 is the max OS for PowerPC processor Macs. Your profile shows OS 10.5.6. What OS are you using (or trying to use)?
Will the PB boot using a systen install DVD?

You won't lose any data unless you erase your hard drive.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c"key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it.When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've selected the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.

  • Computer will not boot up.  I have tried running disk utility and re-installing OSX.  It says disk locked

I am new to Macs and have bought a 13" Macbook Pro and a IMac 21.5" 14 months ago.  I have only used the Macbook pro about 15-20 times and after upgrading to Maverick it will not boot up.  I get the white screen and a spinning circle.  I have tried Disk utility repair and even re-installing the OSX, but it says disk locked.  I do not recall setting any password protections or passwords.  I now have a brick with a lit up Apple logo.  If anyone knows how I can bypass the disk lock error or reset the laptop, please let me know.  This has not been a pleasant conversion from PC's.  Even my IMac blacks out from time to time and both happened right after my factory warranty expired.

The internal drive is malfunctioning. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Hello I have a imac G5 17" and it will not boot up.

Hello, I have a imac G5 17" and it will not boot up...... There isn't any chime when you turn it on and the led light will come and fade out a little but will stay on and the screen will stay black. Does any one have any suggestions on what's wrong and how to fix it?
    <Re-Titled By Host>

The bottom of that article says to contact an authorized service technician.  You may also find that simply replacing the PRAM battery (the coin shaped battery) helps.   Note: if you have any capacitors that are labelled X on their top (as opposed to just K), you may have the problem of the leaking capacitors which required a power supply and/or logicboard replacement.  The leaking capacitor was an industry wide problem.
