HP dv6-1030us webcam now dead after almost 5 years of laptop usage

I have HP Pavilion dv6-1030us Entertainment PC currently in Windows 8.1. I upgraded it's notebook factory OS (Vista) for almost 4 times now since I got this 5 years ago. I never had issues in webcam drivers everytime I switch from another Os to another (even the beta ones) until now. There is no any imaging devices installed in Device Manager. Also there is no webcam to be selected in Skype's option. Even in Windows 8 webcam app.  I had some issues on the camera before it's totally dead now. Captured video is blinking, webcam will be automatically turned off then I'll on it again (on Skype calls which the webcam is I mainly use) And since there no webcam driver on my product support page http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategoryos=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=38605...  (expect for the MediaSmart Webcam Software) I know this is no problem in my webcam driver. I red some few forum post about the same issue and some says it's Bad wiring or something since the notebook probably 5 years old now. Obviously my warranty is already ended so all I got is a help here in forums. Please if someone knows wehre to download the fricking driver, please told me where. I need help ASAP
PS: Also the AC port is already loosed so sometimes power fails (plugged in, no battery) and notebook will be accidentally offed . If this issue may contribute (theoretically) to webcam's hardware status now, please told me so
PPS: Sorry for bad English

Hi @PrinceKickster ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue of updating your HP Pavilion dv6-1030us Notebook and the Webcam not being seen in Imaging devices. Here is a document on fixing a Webcam after changing the OS. Here is a link to the Cyberlink Youcam software for Windows 8.
You should be able to click the action button and scan for new hardware  in your device manager.
Have you taken apart the Notebook at all?
Hope this helps you.
Thanks.

That is about normal. You can maximize battery life by changing some settings. See:

  • Dv6-1030us Webcam Problem

I have a dv6-1030us computer and it seems since I installed Vista Service Pack 2 the built in webcam works intermittently.  (I noticed the problem too long after I installed SP2, so I have no easy route back to SP1) Most of the time it simply doesn't work; when you open the HP MediaSmart webcam program, your hear the sound of a usb device unplugging and get an alert that the "Connection to the video device was lost".  If you check device manager the webcam still shows up as there and I don't see anything else missing.
Occasionally  - and I have not been able to reproduce a chain of actions that are repeatable to help solve the problem - the camera does work.  Probably less than 5% of the time.  I have called customer service and they said other people are reporting a similar problem, but I have yet to see anyone post.  I am wondering if I simply have a hardware failure with the camera.  I have updated all drivers and have the latest bios version f.24.  Any suggestions?

I've had this laptop for two years without a webcam problem. Upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. My webcam stopped working. If I go into HP MediaSmart Webcam it shows an image for a few seconds and then it loses its connection. I can't get it to work in the latest version of Skype anymore. It's not even an option to choose from. The only option is a Cyberlink webcam filter that I've never noticed as an option before.  Any suggestions?

  • WRT54G: Dead after a year?

I've had this WRT54G for a year or so, it's worked well since I bought it.  However tonight my network just died completely out of nowhere.  I couldn't figure out what the problem was, because my router was still getting a DHCP server from the modem and was giving my computers on the network their correct addresses.  However, I could not ping/traceroute ANYTHING outside of my network.
I then took my computer and hardwired it straight to the modem.  Everything works fine, obviously since I am posting this.  I tried soft reseting the router.  That did not work.  I tried checking all the settings, they were all fine.  I tried a hard reset by allowing factory defaults and reconfiguring the entire router again, that also did nothing.  I am pretty much assuming the router is dead.  I've tried about everything short of opening it up which would not help the situtation.
I guess my question is:  Is it normal for a linksys router to die after a year?  A lot of the linksys routers I've owned have not lasted more than two years, which in my opinion, is really, really bad.  I would suggest Cisco to work on the longevity of their routers, because I'm probably not going to buy one of their products this time.

As you can login to your router's web interface you should first upgrade it's firmware...
Download the Router's firmware from here
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Dead after 2 years 4 months, should I be angry?

I posted my woes elsewhere but it's true, my hard drive is fried. I had a long chat in Japanese with an Apple Support staff and all he could do was appologize and tell me that if Apple does the repaire that it will cost apron 500 USD; he gave me the number for a couple of other companies that can repair the disk and said I should shop around.
Here's my beef: I had used a Sotec computer for 6 years without incident, leaving it on 24/7 and the cost was nominal. The iMac was 2800 USD and breaks after 2 years. Yeah, maybe I should have bought the Applecare but, honestly, if you're spending that much money on a computer don't you expect that it should be okay for 2 years? Should I be angry?
My first thought is that Apple doesn't make the hardware but then I checked a little here and read, "Because Apple makes the hardware, the operating system, and many applications, Apple products are truly integrated systems". So, whose fault is it? I leave my computer on pretty much 24/7 in an air-conditioned room; I do word processing, surfing and a good bit of FB'ing and that's it. Two years seems exteream.
Costwise I should be fine. I have two warranty options from the store I originally bought it. It just takes time; it's a trust issue, too.
So, tell me if I should be angry at Apple. I honestly won't know until I speak with the English customer service rep and hear their explanation.

My parents still use the tube television they bought in the late 60' in one of their guest rooms and it works just fine. It's that kind of longevity I'd like to expect from a product but this age things are too complex, they're obsolete in a much shorter time span, so I guess it makes sense that it could die in two years.
A lot of it has to do with consumer demand for inexpensive products, especially high tech ones. I have some old "enterprise class" 2 GB SCSI hard drives that probably will outlast any of the SATA ones in any of my current Macs. But they were insanely expensive by current standards, about $70 per GB of capacity, & maybe a tenth as fast as even the cheapest SATA drive on the market today.
Something similar applies to that old TV: in terms of resolution & picture accuracy, it probably cost several times what a contemporary one costs today.
Almost no consumer would accept that kind of price/performance ratio today; in fact, we demand that the price/performance ratio constantly improve or we just won't buy new stuff. For years Apple tried to remain totally aloof from the highly competitive commodity market this creates, & it almost killed the company: Macs lasted practically forever but became just too expensive for most people to afford.
Today, they offer very competitive price/performance ratios; & their unique combination of close hardware/software integration, user friendliness, excellent esthetics, & all the rest of it keep them from becoming just another commodity computer; but consumers still won't pay much of a premium for that, much less for the far less tangible & quite expensive benefits of very long average life expectancy.

  • MY NOKIA N73 NOW DEAD AFTER UPDATING TO FIRMWARE 3...

    Hi ladies and gents
looks like other folks have had thier lovely new shiny n73's turned into paperwieghts.
followed the instructions to the letter, everything looked like it was working, the updater asked me to remove the battery and the charger for a few secs then press/hold the on button for a few secs...................then the updating process continues but then i get a message saying the update process failed and to try again which i did, only for the same thing to happen two more times!!!!??????
just wondering what other ownwers experiences have been like perforrming the above firmware update. any advice would be appriciated.

When the Software updater prompts you to do that, DO NOT unplug the phone or remove the battery at any stage. Simply check that the phone has no active connections running in the back round and click try again. The same thing happened with my N70-1 as I was using the phone as a modem at the same time that I was updating the software. I ;et the file download then when it prompted me to remove the battery I simply disconnected the modem and clicked try again and it updated with no issues at all.

  • Battery pretty much dead after 1 year...

I've had my powerbook for a little over a year and now my battery appears to be already dead. I usually keep it plugged into AC but recently I found that my battery life is about 10 minutes now. I used to get a good couple hours out of it in the past but not now.
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 614
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 613
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12518
    Cycle Count: 322
My question is, is this normal for batteries after barely even a year? I purchased the extended apple care protection for the next two years but they are telling me that I have to foot the bill for this one, 98 bucks! And....the new battery will only come with a 90 day warranty so if my battery goes dead again after 90 days, it's coming out of my pocket again.
What's the deal with these batteries! Anyone know the policy on replacing batteries? I've noticed on these forums that some people get their batteries replaced by apple. What's the time frame for getting ur battery replaced for free by APP? even if you've purchased the 2 yr extension plan?

<When calling apple care I specifically asked him whether it was better to leave the laptop plugged in or run it off the battery. He said plugged in with no hesitation.>
I don't know how Apple trains their Tech support personnel, but it seems that there should be some sort of product knowledge training for these people. When in times past, I have called AppleCare, I have gotten knowledgeable representatives and at other times, I question the knowledge a tech supp rep has. It seems hit and miss for me.
According to Apple's own website: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html, quoted "Standard Maintenance
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her iBook on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month. "
With that being said and quoted, it may behoove Apple to require their tech support reps to attend Product Knowledge courses every now and then so they will be handily able to answer our questions.
In terms of Apple recommending charging and discharging the battery at least once per month, don't take to heart that they mean all the way to the sleep state, or below 10%. That will definitely wear your battery out quicker than you would probably want. In my normal use, I usually only allow my computer to discharge to no lower than 15% before I plug it in again, if I can remedy that, or if I have available a power outlet to plug into. If I do discharge below that, I just save my work and just shut down my machine until I can plug in again.
If storing a battery for any length of time, never place it in a freezer. In a refrigerator is fine, with the battery discharge to 40-50% of full capacity. I know this is probably more information than you care to want to know, but I thought about it some more, and I couldn't control the flow of my rambling and typing. LOL.

  • Could the battery be dead after one year?

Without any warning my one year old Ipad 2 won't power up.  Shouldn't the battery have stopped holding a full charge before that happened?  I have not dropped the iPad or had any accident with it.  So I'm very surprised that it has stopped working.

You know anything is possible right? And not all iPads are capable of living for 2 - 9 years.
Have you tried charging it while starting it?
Have you tried contacting the "Apple"?
Have you tried going to any nearby Apple Store and check if your iPad needs battery replacement?
If all of these suggestions does not work, well it's bad news for you buddy.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
First, uninstall Skype and when this has completed, restart the notebook.
When windows has reloaded, download and reinstall the Chipset driver Here.
When the installation has finished, restart the notebook again.
Let windows fully load, then download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45044.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.
Let Windows fully load, then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook again.
Reinstall Skype and see if the Mic now works Ok.

Is this is the quality & service we boost? On visiting the store we get only one reply you may write to Apple directely. we have the similar kind of problem with iPad which is being used by my wife Mr.Neelam Vij and paid Rs.16000/- to get it replaced within a year & 6months use. so in totality we have paid Rs.28500/- + Rs. 3000/- diagnostic charges.

    2. iPad 2, 16GB White with Sr. No.DL*******KPH
Moreover, we have no information to contact whom. even the replace set has a warranty of only three month which further confirm that Apple itself is not confident wheather product will last after replacement for more then three month. Such kind of happening do not encourage anyone to recomend this product to anyone. Would appriciate a faster response to our problem if someone from Apple is going to read this email.

  • Satellite L670 - Hard Disk Dead after 8 months only

    Hi,
this morning I had to retunr my laptop due to bad hard disk problem. After 8 months, it's dead already.
The positive points are: I am still under warranty and second the toshiba software hilighted me on time, allowing me to back up my data before the crash. Tks Toshiba for this tool, very usefull.
The question is, how can a hard disk die that quick after just fews months ?
Bad luck or bad use ? I am wondering.
I wish to have a feedback from those who owns same model, L670 (windows 7), to understand if this problem is commun or if I was unluckily concerned.
Also, if there are possible solutions to avoid HD stress in the daily use ? Like for example, reduce writing on it (back up of blu-ray using AnyDvD HD ON hd, then cut&paste to external HD), or to not connect too often external hard disk to avoid electricity surcharge if any ?
In future, will I have to perform chkdsk more often ? Defrag ? If yes, at which frequency ?
This is my 3rd laptop dying, Sony VAIO = mothercard dead after 1.2 years, Fujitsu Amilo xi = explosed after 3 years, and now Toshiba HD after 8 months.
From 900EUR up to 1600EUR, I do not see a significative resistance of one of those models, Sony was the badest ever in terms of video card longevity and compatibility (games unplayable after 2 months, no driver update), keyboard "painting" was a mess with deterioration after fews months compared to Fujitsu and Toshiba (no pb). Toshiba L670 more recent, was the best in terms of game compatibility.
What to do ? Stop buying laptop or use it only fews hours a day with a PC on top ?
For time beeing I can't afford to have a PC + a laptop as I am unemployed, surviving with 10EUR/day,
time to find a job again.
Despite this situation, I managed to buy new Zelman notebook cooler for my Toshiba at around 40/50EUR, but, it didn't help apparently.
Tks for feedback about L670 duration life, and particulary HD problem + best use to protect it.
    Guillaume

    You're not the only one.
I bought an L670 in September last year. It was strictly for home use as replacement for a desktop PC, so it was never moved.
Just after a few weeks things started to go wrong: boot fails, programs crashing, Windows 7 crashing...
It's almost 7 months now since purchase and I'm writing this message on the very same notebook with 'Hard Disk Sentinel' running in the background, reporting more bad sectors every day. It tells me that hard disk health is now down to only 9% and that it has an estimated 14 days to live.
Since the notebook is technically still running fine, I don't think I can have the HDD replaced under warranty or am I wrong? Does the HDD have to cease working alltogether before I can have it replaced under warranty?

  • Y500 motherboard dead after only 18 months

My $1000 laptop is dead after just 18 months. The motherboard is unrepairable and my hard drive has stopped working. It has been having issues starting for at least six months but now it is dead for good. I'm pissed because Lenovo won't work wih me to repair it. They want almost $600 for a new motherboard and hard drive. That's without them actually touching the laptop. For that price I can just buy a new laptop. You can be sure it won't be a Lenovo. Apparently, they are ok with people paying a premium for their products that last less than half te lifespan of their competitors. I am so angry right now.

  • Mid-2010 battery dead after 629 cycles?!?

    Hi,
My mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" battery is seemingly dead after only 629 cycles. It says that the condition is "replace now" and the green indicator lights flash when I press the button on the side. It was working fine, and then I didn't use the computer for a little while, and now the battery doesn't charge and it has to be plugged in.
I'm hesitant to think the battery has just failed, because like I mentioned, there are only 629 cycles on it, and it was working prefectly before, and it seems very sudden.
    Any help/thoughts/suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks!

Make an appointment at the genius bar.  Have you fully discharged and recharge fully over the battery's 2 yr life?  This is good to do a few times a year.

  • IPod touch completely dead after attempted update to 3.0

    Cross-posted to "with Windows" forum...
...Not only during update to 3.0, but also during update to 2.2.1 and during a restore attempt 6 weeks ago. All 3 "dead" iPods have been replaced by Apple - I'd like a solution...
I have videoed the update taking place and the iPod dying during it - sadly it is in MOV format (439MB) and I cannot convert to an uploadable version for Youtube... By DEAD, I mean, no power and will not display ANYTHING on the screen. Simply won't power up again.
This is what happens: Download update using iTunes... Extracting software... Backing up iPod... Preparing the iPod for the software update... (iPod shows USB plug and CD - then apple logo...) then the updating progress line appears on iTunes and on touch. Updating iPod software... Verifying updated iPod software... Updating the iPod firmware... White progress line on iPod disappears after a few seconds and screen goes black. Error message displays on iTunes - "The iPod xxxx could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)"
iPod is now dead and needs to be replaced,
    1) Has anyone experienced this?
    2) Has anyone SOLVED it?
Maybe related is a problem with some videos that have happened recently (and were the cause of me trying to restore the iPod last time it died) MP4 (or MPV files) play for about 20-30 minutes, then screen goes white, then black, then apple logo appears, then iPod returns to home screen after about 30 seconds. My usual solution to this has been to remove all videos, photos (which are corrupted by this time), audio, and then re-sync back.
I'd appreciate ANY help please. I intend buying an iPhone soon and would like to know that the problem won't occur on that, every time I try to restore.
    Cheers!
    Martin

To begin the discussion, let's throw in a few possibilities:
    1. Is your iPod in the process of being "jail-broken"? If so, I'd avoid the risk and stick with standard Apple firmware. Some hacks end up with dead iPods.
    2. Do you use iTunes for syncing? Only use Apple software for managing your file system.
    3. Are you Windows or Apple? For whatever it's worth, I've only seen this happen with Windows machines.
No solutions here - but maybe some hopeful suggestions.
