HP DV6 Hard disk Utilization 100%

I am using HP Pavilion DV6 6168tx with 4GB RAM and 2GB AMD Radeon.  OS is Windows 8.1 (64Bit). The Problem is Frequent Hangs and Freezes due to 100% Utilization of Disk. I have Reinstalled the OS and updated it but problem remains the same.  Following is the screenshot of Task Manager.
Also Following is Storage Space and Remaining Space Status. There is lots of free space avalable. Please Help me resolving this problem.

@Zue ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  Here are a couple of links that may assist you with your issue.
The first one was found here on the HP support forums. Originally posted by @finder070 .
In order to know which process is utilizing the Hard Disk on Windows 8, I would suggest you to try the following steps.
a.     Open Task Manager and click on Details tab.
b.     Right click the columns headers and click "Select Columns".
c.     From the "Select Columns" window, check: I/O Reads, I/O Writes, I/O read bytes, I/O write bytes and then click OK.
d.     Now the columns will be added to the view and will display how much each process is utilizing from the hard disk.
e.     Sort by I/O read bytes or I/O write bytes by clicking on the column header to see which process is utilizing the HD most.
Try the following methods and check if it helps.
Method 1:
I would suggest you to increase this virtual memory and check if it helps.
Windows8 automatically manages virtual memory and paging file size by default. The virtual memory set by default is approximately 70% of the recommendation.
You need to increase this virtual memory. Make it equivalent to your RAM size for the initial size and twice of the initial size in maximum size and make sure you have the same amount of free space in your hard drive in each drive.
a.     Press windows + R key from the keyboard.
b.     Select the option Control Panel and All control panel items then System.
c.     Click on Advanced system settings.
d.     Under performance, click on settings.
e.     Go to Advanced tab, Under Virtual memory, click on Change.
f.      UN-check "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" check box.
g.     Select your windows drive (where OS is installed).
h.     Click on Custom size radio button.
i.      Set Initial size equivalent to your RAM size in MB.
j.      Set Maximum size to twice of your RAM size in MB.
k.     Click on Set.
l.      Click on OK thrice.
m.   Restart your system.
Method 2:
I would suggest you to boot the computer in Safe mode and check if the issue persists.
Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs don't run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed.
Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)
If the issue does not persist in safe mode, then perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.
How to troubleshoot problems using clean boot in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot “to reset computer as usual.
Keep us updated on the status of the issue.

I have HP ProBook 4530s running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Until recently it worked without any problem but since last week disk utilization has been constantly 100% immediately after laptop has been turned on and I have logged on with my domain user account (this
morning 100% disk utilization lasted for almost half an hour). In task manager ntoskrnl.exe is the one who is killing my hard disk. Is there any official Microsoft solution for this - I definitely want to avoid reinstalling Windows from scratch. I saw on net
this was almost common bug in Windows 8.1 but without any solution working 100%.

  • ST06 Disk Utilization 100%

    Dear All,
My SAP PRD is 4.7 EE on Win2003 with Win sp2 on MS SQL 2000 Data Base with 4 GB of RAM.
The performance on the system is very slow and we have planned to go for an upgrade on Physical Memory. The DB resides on the SAN BOX and in connected wih Fiber channel from PRD to SAN (1 GBPS).
We see that the DISK Utilization in ST06 is always 100%. As a rule it should not be more than 50%.
I see that the CPU Idle time is always above 95%. check TOP CPU time and found that everything seems to be normal.
What all things do i need to consider to nail down the issue.

    Hi
we have similar problem few weeks ago. we are using HPUX 11.23 and Oracle 9.2.0.6.
many reason can cause this problem :
    -  write process (mainly) -- and read process too, that is not separated to some logical volume (or volume groups) but concentrated in one logical volume (or one volume groups). in this case write process will hit only in one LV ( or VG). to solve this, you must distribute write process into several LVs (or several VGs) so writer process will write evenly to the datafile in several locations. the same way when reading process from several LVs (or VGs) compared with reading in one LV (or one VG).
    - bottleneck in your I/O. you must discuss with your hardware vendor and storage vendor, if there is some bottleneck that causing this.
what have happened to us is broken index of the most table we have caused by system restore few weeks before. after we are doing index for suspected tables, our utilization in decreased.
    we are using command :

  • Maximum number of songs to be stored in a reburnished Z-Xtra - New Hard disk of 100

My original hard disk of 60 Gb failed and I replaced it with a new one of 00 GbIs it possible to fill out completly the capacity of the new disk with songs . ( Nearly to 33.000 ) or is there a limitation for the firmware installed ?My actual firmaware is 2.0.03Thanks for your help

Well if you're going by Creative's?assumption that the adverage person?is still encoding there music at low bitrates of 28kbps (MP3) and 64kbps (WMA), then you might be able to get additional songs on there than? a normal person who uses encodes of 92-320kb
    ps.
Having said that, I remember that the original?firmwares?(before PlayforSure), had a limit to the amount of tag information it could hold. So figurati'vely speaking you may be able?get 33,000 songs on there if you didn't tag your music, but less songs will fit if you fully tag your music. I have not heard if this limitation still exist with the PlayforSure firmware though.Message Edited by TimT on 03-06-200707:02 PM

  • Dv6 Hard disk swap OS help

Hi, I have a dv6-1245dx laptop, and have have determined  (with help from other folks on this forum ) that a failing HD is the cause of some BSOD issues i've been having lately, so I'd like to swap it out and keep this puppy alive a bit longer.
The HD is a Fujitsu SATA44 type, and is super easy to get to.  Assuming I get a drive thats exactly the same size, the swap should be a breeze.
I assume I can get pretty much any laptop 2.5'' hard drive that is SATA, and i'm just gonna get the same size (320GB), so it's not very expensive.
My problem though, is how to deal with the OS?  This laptop has vista.  How can I take the old drive out, slap a new one in, and somehow get the OS back onto the new drive ( this was my wifes laptop so if there were original install discs, they are LONG gone )  ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You're not restricted to any HDD manufacturer, so any 2.5" Sata drive ( 5400rpm or 7200rpm ) will be fine ( you'll need to remove the plastic adapter from the old drive and fit it to the new one - see Pages 78/79 of your Maintenance & Service Guide ) - You may also want to consider installing a slightly larger capacity drive if there's little differnce in cost, such as the example on the link below.
    500Gb Notebook Hard Drive.
Regarding reinstalling the OS, there are a couple of options.
    1.  Although the Recovery Discs are no longer stocked by HP, they are available at the 3rd party re-seller on the following link.
    http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-16827-recovery-kit-532673-001-for-hp-model-number-dv6-1245dx.aspx
These discs will reinstall the operating system, all required drivers and nearly all of the original software ( the exception often being trials of MS Office ).  They will also re-create all the original partitions, including the Recovery Partition.
    2.   In the same way that it's possible to create a Windows 7 retail disc, use this to perform the installation and then use the OEM windows 7 activation key from the COA label, the same process is possible if your notebook came with Vista.  A full description ( including links to the Vista Image downloads ) of this can be found on the following link.
    Vista Files & Guide.
Additional software and drivers you may require can be found Here.

  • Root cause for 100 % disk utilization

    Hi All,
Whenever in one of the dailog instance disk utilization is showing 100% sap system is getting very slow, what is the root cause for 100% utilization .At that moment of time when I checked the CPU usage it showed 98% CPU idle. server is on Windows NT and around 13GB of RAM is always free.
We have only one drive in the apps server. Can this be the cause of 100% disk utilization?
    Waiting for ur frequent responses.
    Regards,
    Prashant

    Hi,
I have answered similar questions :
    [Re: Disk Utilization 100%]
as described above, one thing that cause 100% disk utilization is that writer processes (and read process too) is concentrated only on a single disk (equivalent to single volume group or single logical volume).
we can imagine that a large number of user hitting the single disk (where datafiles exist) on the same time with a huge transaction load.
if we can manage writable datafiles in several locations (equivalent to several volume groups or several logical volumes) where several datafiles exist, writer processes (and read process too) will be distributed to that several locations, so that each location (each disk, each VG or each LV) utilization may not reach 100%.
so it is important to design writable datafiles in multiple location in different disks to prevent 100% disk utilization.
one thing should be remember is to consult with hardware and storage vendor if there is any possibilities bottleneck or I/O issue on your hardware or storage.
    hope it help you.

  • Pavilion dv6-1125es - Hard Disk problem

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-1125es (out of warranty) with Vista Home Premium (32 bit) that runs very slowly and freezes but this does not seem to be caused by malware. I was considering reinstalling but decided to run diagnostics first. In the System Diagnostics (Setup), the Start-up Test (F2) finds no problem in the Memory Test, Hard Disk Quick Test or Hard Disk SMART Test.
In the System Diagnostics Hard Disk Test (F4), the Quick Test indicates Passed (100%) but the Full Test shows:
    - 00% Complete
-‘Replace Hard Disk1’(in red) followed by ‘testing’ (in white)
    The SMART check indicates Passed
On pressing Esc to continue, the next screen shows (in blue)
    - “Hard Disk Test” Failed
    - “Hard Disk 1 FULL” (305)
The Diagnostic Log shows Result: 0305
I would be grateful for help with the following points:
    1) Is the ‘0305’ error unfixable? Does it mean replacing the hard disk?
    2) The current disk is 320 Gb. What is capacity limit for this model dv6-1125es?
    3) If I install Windows 7 on the new disk, can the 64 bit version be used on this model?
    4) As this laptop has also been running hot, I would like to try to clean the fan and ventilation system. Where can I find instructions on this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
    To answer your questions.
    1.  The 305 error does mean you will need to replace the Hard Drive.
    2.  You can certainly go up to a 500Gb HDD without any problems - see the procedure starting on Page 69 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
    3.  Yes, your processor is 64bit capable - see Here for confirmation of this.
    4.  There are instructions for cleaning your notebooks air vents Here.

So, lately, I switched the hard drives in my computer to migrate from Windows XP and install Windows Vista to my machine, everything was going alright with my machine, until I decided to install Skype, as it's the main communications line with me and the internet, and I noticed it now takes up pretty much all of my CPU and hard disk resources when loading all of my contacts and messages after installation, but it finished loading them, and it still uses a high amount of my resources. • How can I download all my iTunes music after wiping my hard disk without going into each of the 100  artists listed

Hi - I have recently had to wipe my hard disk which meant all my music has gone with it so I have an empty iTunes music library.
The only way I can see of doing it is
    - going to the store
    - selecting Purchased
    - then I get a list of artists or albums down the left hand side
    - have to select each individually and click Download All on the bottom left - for over 100+ its going to take forever ! Is there an easier way ?????
    Thanks !

You can only sync your device to one iTunes library at a time. You can either copy the music from the library on your other computer to the one you have loaded the new CDs onto, or you can purchase an external CD Drive and load them to the iTunes library you are currently sync'd with:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://store.apple.com/us/search/External-CD-DVD---SuperDrive
For syncing, I am not familiar with the drag and drop method. I have always used the normal sync process:
iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad
iTunes 12 for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

  • Hard disk test failed on HP Pavillion dv6-1100eo notebook

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-1100eo Entertainment Notebook PC  (P/N: NR597EA) with Vista 32-bit.  Unfortunately no warranty left in and general I have been very happy with this notebook.
However suddenly Wondows would not start up - and it did not even find Startup Recovery partition on the harddisk. As I wasn't sure if this Startup Recovery was on hard disk or not - I ordered System Recovery DVDs for this Scandinavian language version.
These disks did not work - so I figured I have probably not done my homework before ordering those disks.
Then I ran system Diagnostics (even if I have a old BIOS version F.03).  On the diagnositics - both Quick and Full Hard disk test failed during the first 1% of the scan.
Is there anything that can be done - or is the only option new hard disk? In case - what hard disk is recommended that is not too expensive - as I don't want to invest too much into a soon 3 year old notebook.
I recently bougth an external harddisk (1 TB) based on USB connection. Can that be used bypassing internal HD. In this way I would increase HD capacity and not invest anymore into this notebook - since I already have the recovery DVDs
It is probably only a time question before I will buy a new HP notebook - that is why I don't want any long permanent fix of this problem.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
Sorry to say, but you won't be able to install or boot Vista from the external HDD, so if you need to get the notebook working, you're going to have to replace the internal drive.
The drive on the link below is an example of one that would be fine for your notebook.
    500Gb Hard Drive
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 57 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.
Once done, simply use your Recovery DVDs to reinstall the Operating System on the new drive.

  • Satellite M30X - high hard disk drive utilization

After login in Windows XP (SP2), my toshiba laptop is very slow. The hard disk drive light is continuously on for 5 minutes. I've looked at the task manager, but CPU utilization is low and RAM usage is low. There is no program that seems to use a lot of CPU or RAM.

If this issue has begun after installation of the new memory module then I would say that the new memory module is responsible for this issue.
You could also try to put back the 256MB module to check if the issue still persist.
This would be the easiest way for checking

  • My Book consisting of 100 pages cannot be saved in my hard disk.  I am getting an error message.  Yesterday, I was able to save it but it had only 25 pages.

Hi Everyone!  I made a Book in iPhoto, consisting of 100 pages.  I cannot save it on my hard disk, and am always getting an error message, that the operation cannot be completed.  Why is this happening?  Yesterday I made a Book with less number of pages, and I was able to save it on my hard disk and in my external drive.  Please share your knowledge on how to address this problem.  Many thanks!

By saving do you mean creating a PDF file of it?  Have you rebooted since the problem. Also try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the above fails continue with the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

    Hi Everyone
HP 1000-1140tu notebook with 500GB (Toshiba MQ01ABD050 ) , 2GB Ram ddr3 and core i3 processor. This machine has 100% Activity time for hard disk and average response time is always above 1200ms. Mostly system get stucks for 2-3 minutes.
I have re-installed windows 7 and windows 8.1 64bit versions and format the hard drive but issue is not fixed. Also i have updated bios to latest version. Does anybody know about this issue?
I have two suppositions about this issue :
    1. Hard drive controlller issue
    2. Hard drive connectors issue

    Hello @Hp1000TU ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you have 100% disk usage on your notebook at all times.
Let's start by optimizing the hardware performance on your notebook by changing the power plan to High Performance.
You can also try running a disk check for corruptions on the drive, and have the computer try to fix them. To do this I suggest booting the notebook into safe mode with command prompt, and then running the following command:
    chkdsk /b /v /x C:
Let me know the results of the check disk or if the power plan resolved the issue.
Please click the "Kudos, Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post if you want to say "Thanks" for helping!
Please click "Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
