HP DV7-6163US Fan Trouble

Hi guys,
I dropped my laptop like two feet inside of a case, and now the fan isn't working properly. For the last week, it's off most of the time, but does come on intermittently. This morning I got the 90B fan error message at startup. It's a Pavilion DV7-6163us.
Is it just the connector loose? Or do I need to replace the whole thing? I have the service manual, and I basically need to take everything off to replace the fan, but can I check the connection without having to do that?
Thanks

Hi,
Very hard to say because dropping a machine can have many, yes many, unkown damages and can have unpreditable outcomes. At this stage you only see an error with its fan but you only hope this is the ONLY one (I also hope this for you too). The following manual shows you where the connectors of the fan:

So I encountered a problem with this computer after Updating the driver VIA HP website. This update was recommended so I did it. It also helped make my computer perform better. I have no idea if this was what made it but I am 90% sure it did- My fan is now making weird grinding noises every once in a while. After a while it got worse, and it is VERY loud now. I don't want to send it in really since it will take a while... So if you guys can help please do!
    Thanks,

You would not keep driving your car if the brakes were making a grinding noise, right? I doubt the software update had anything to do with the fan noise. Just coincidence. Try bending out a paperclip. Stick it in the fan grille to hold the fan blades from spinning and blow in compressed air and see if dust flies. Sometimes this will unclog a fan and let it spin better. If that does not work you are going to have to have the fan replaced; sorry.

  • HP Pavilion DV7-6163us Entertainment PC: 2wsx keys are messed up and don't work most of the time.

    I have a HP dv7-6163us Entertainment PC. Here are the specs= http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c02863099&lc=en&product=5141405
Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core i7
Hello! I have a problem that just started yesterday where my 2wsx keys have started to not respond at all some times. They sometimes don't respond, and though they work sometimes, it can be annoying while I am playing a game or typing a document. Interestingly, if I try to push the "wsx" keys all at once while they aren't working, they begin to work again. But only for a short amount of time.
I have some guesses at why this is happening:
Motherboard issue, seems the keys are in a row maybe meaning that the wires on the motherboard are all connected.
Keys are broke. Doubt it though as they seem to look fine.
Maybe a overheat on the motherboard? I don't know, but the fan is right below these keys.
Thanks! If link doesn't work I am reposting the link.

    Hi,
You are very welcome. Yes, I wanted you to try the steps in the section which says "Keyboard is not working". I wanted you to try setting BIOS to defaults and uninstalling the Keyboard driver and restarting the Notebook to re-install them automatically. If you have already tried them let's go ahead and perform a BIOS Update on the Notebook.
For doing that I would like to know whether the Windows 7 OS on your Notebook is 32 bit or 64 Bit.
I am waiting to hear back from you.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us Fan Buzzes when running fast

I have an HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us and within the past few months my laptop heats up pretty easy and whenever the fan starts running really fast it will buzz and it vibrates enough that I can feel it a bit in the top left area of the laptop, the only way it stops is if I tap that area pretty hard. I'm assuming this means the bearings or something on the fan are shot, and it needs to be replaced. I've tried to clean the fan area the best I can (though there's never a lot of dust inside) but if I remember from the last time I took it apart, I can't get to it very easily without removing the motherboard, so i have to clean the fan with the cover on. Is there a way to fix this or if not, where can I get a replacement fan?

    Hi,
Have a look at the service guide.

Your laptop should have a shared graphics Intel 3000 so pick the heat sink/fan assembly for the Intel UMA memory:

  • Could my months-old kernel panic be related to overheating/fan troubles?

Greetings, all. At a certain point last year my computer's only functionality was a kernel panic. Startup and restart would yield either a crash in the middle of booting, or a KP after the computer was up and running for only a minute. All checks have been undertaken and all forms of trouble-shooting has been done: the hard drive was replaced, the hardware checks were done with the diagnostic disk that came with the unit, the AppleCare plan, and TechTool Pro (no hardware issues were detected; RAM was checked again and again and slots were switched, etc.).
And then it worked. The unit was working for a full day without hitches or glitches; it was like brand new. And then the next day the KP returned like before, and this is with a new hard drive and a whole new install of the OS (most recent one is Tiger). I live in Los Angeles, and my theory is that on the particular day it worked like a charm was a day on which the air conditioning made my home quite cool, and it was on for a full day previous to this. It is not uncommonly hot where I live, and I feel that the computer's heat management system has taken a turn for the worse, and the fact that it worked was aided by the cool air of my home.
This is the only logical issue that I can think that would remain. This is a dual 1 GHZ Quicksilver purchased in January of 2002, and the KP problem has been the <only> remotely serious issue I have encountered. If I am correct that I might have a usable computer if the heat issue is sorted out, what equipment do I need to buy? I have searched this forum for advice and some have told others to buy a new fan, but is that the extent of my needs? Is the motherboard becoming too hot and if so would just a new fan do the trick?
I would appreciate it if some of you kind users would tell me what is thought of my theory re: the air conditioning (and if you wonder why I just do not have the air on more often, it is not needed where I am except for the most scorching days of the year, which will not come again for months). And if heat is my worry, any advice on what to buy and from which manufacturer would be much appreciated.
I have tried what I believe to be every other obvious and not so obvious diagnostic check and the above is the only one that holds any water. It has become apparent that it cannot be attributed to software, as it froze upon either boot-up or not even using an application, and since the drive was replaced with a new OS, I can't see how it's OS or drive related (to test the theory that perhaps it's my install disk of Tiger, I went and did clean installs of previous revs of OS X and the KP is there, regardless).
    Thank you!
    Vince

  • HP DV7 4020sa Fan Noise - Cleaned and still making noise

    Hi.
    I need help with my laptop. It's a DV7 4020sa.
Ever since I purchased the laptop (used) the fan has made a horrible whining sound. I decided to fix it today so dissambled the laptop and gave the fan a good clean, and also put some wd40 on the fan spindle.
Unfotunately after reassembling, the fan still makes the noise. It strange because if i pull the screen/lid slightly towards me it stops the noise, and also if I apply pressure on the underside on the base where the fan is located.
Should I buy a new/refurbished fan to replace it or is there some fix i can apply myself?
    Thanks in advance

  • Dv7 6014 fan failure message

Is there documentation on opening a dv7-6014 to replace the cooling fan please? We got the 'detected cooling fan failure - 90? - shutting down in 15secs' during a windows update. Its running now with an external fan on the vent.
Also have a dv7-5003, which has run hot, and  noisy fan all its life - temp now is under 20C ambient, and the left side of the body is almost too hot to keep a hand on it. The 6014 has vents at the rear left, but the 5003 does not...??? Documentation on opening this model please?
    thanks

  • Macbook Pro Fan Trouble.

I recently sent my Macbook Pro Fans to get replaced. The problem was that my fans started to work even when the computer didn't need it. They would accelerate up to 6000 RPM and I would only be running Safari and iChat. Then the computer's fans would start to slow down and then speed back up. I sent in the computer for repair to get the fans looked at and they replaced them. Well the problem is still persisting. Should I call them about it again or is this normal? I only ask because I don't know if it is or not.

I have the same trouble with mine. I took it in for repair as it had a logic board issue, and they gave it back to me yesterday, but when I started using it, the fans ramped up to 6000rpm constantly for the entire day.
This morning I installed Fan Control to see if that would help, but it appears that Fan Control is not actually doing anything. The fans have been stuck around 4400 rpm at 35 degrees celsius even though I told Fan Control not to run at anything above 2000rpm until it gets to 40 degrees.
Is there a mysterious apple setting that says don't go above 35 degrees, or if you do ramp up the fan speed to max until it gets below it again, because according to Fan Control that is what is happening. It is not logical to be wanting to keep a powerful modern laptop at that temperature when the fan noise is so high. 45 degrees would be a fine operating temperature.
BTW, I checked the Hardware test and there is nothing to report from it.

  • HP Pavilion DV7-3160US Fan issues

I woke up and turned on my HP Pavilion DV7-3160US which is less than 3 months old and it sounds as if the fan is loose and makes an awkward and annoying sound that stops after a few minutes  but anytime I move the laptop the sound returns while in movement.
Any ideas or suggestions? Also how long does HP normally take to fix computers? I'd hate to be without my computer for a while.

Hi JV81. The Maintenance guide is the best reference for part numbers. HP's Partsurfer website might enable to you buy parts directly.

  • DV7-2080ed Fan creating noise!

I own a DV7-2080ed laptop purchased in June 2009. Since the past two days, the fan has started producing a stuttering/knocking sound. I have contacted technical support and they have confirmed it as a mechanical fault needing repair, however they have refused to take it for reapir as I have upgraded to Windows 7 on my own!! . I have been advised to switch back to Windows Vista(came installed). The problem is that I have reformated the HDD and deleted the recovery partition...and the recovery disks are too expensive to order!
I fail to understand why upgrading to a new OS would void the warranty!
    Any opinions?

I would just borrow the VISTA CD OS from friends n use the VISTA serial number that is under the notebook if necessary to re-activate.

  • HP DV7-7010US FAN REALLY LOUD AND BATTERY NOT DETECTED..

Hi everyone, I have an HP-DV7 7010US, I got the laptop just about a year ago and recently the fan will spin really loud, like a roaring sound will come out and it will make it really uncomfortable to even use the laptop. I called the HP support and my warranty just ended a couple weeks ago, so I was wondering if anyone knew any solution or had any guides on how to DISASSEMBLE this laptop so I can get a good look for myself. I have tried to look allover the internet and there are no guides or videos on disassembling this exact model... someone make one please! I cannot get 1 last screw out and not sure on how to pop out the keyboard like the previous DV7 models.

Well, the keyboard DOES come off before the top cover because there is one screw hiding under there that connects the top to the base !  (Guess which screw is NOT going to be re-installed !)
Step 4 of the keyboard removal procedure say "Press on the back of the keyboard through the opening in the optical drive bay until the keyboard disengages from the computer."  Well that opening is covered by the numeric keypad !  Use a small, very thin bladed screwdriver to pry up the edge of the keyboard.  It will pop out.
The base part number has been superseded.  From the HP Partsurfer Part 681970-001 is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, 707999-001.   I do not know what differences, if any. there are between the 2.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-6025eo FAN ISSUE

How do I access the fan to a hp pavilion dv7-6025eo?? it makes sooo annoying noises, like some creep is attached to one of the blades and makes the fan instable... There are alot of guides on a dv-7 series notebook but none of them show on this model which has a different top cover... I just want to be able to see if there is something on the blades on the fan so I can remove it... did they really have to make it so difficult to access.........! thanks for advice

There ain't much left except the button board. If I recall, on that model the power button board is connected to the motherboard with a ribbon cable so there is no failsafe button on the motherboard. If the button board switch is bad there is no way to start it up.

  • Dv7 - 3101sa - fan always on, brand new laptop!

this new laptop is fine, except for the fan, which is always on full speed!
It is really annoying and I assume there is a hardware fault
However, I have run some temperasture tests and the CPU seems to be ok  (40C at idle and 60C under heavy load).  It is interesting that when the temperature is up at 60C, the fan is still at the same speed, suggesting there is a clear fault in the speed control of the fan
I have checked all available settings I can find in both windows and BIOS, but still the fan is always on.
The batery time is pretty awful, probebly because of this and unless I can resolve this, it will have to go back,... simply can't cope witht he constant noise!
the only tips on the HP support site are about cleaning... this is less than a week old..and been like ths right out of the box!!
Any other tips I can try?

Had you already tried resetting the BIOS to the default settings (hit F9 on BIOS)? If not try downloading and flashing the BIOS for your laptop model found at HP.com ... newest version is F.15 (issued on 2010-05-25) if you BIOS version is newer, i would not recommend using an older version, same version is ok...
    Hope it helps...
