HP DV7-7201TX - Win 8 - Failure of System Recovery

I have a HP Dv7-7201TX running Win 8. When purchased it came with 6Gb RAM (1x 4Gb & 1x 2Gb) I replaced the 2Gb with a 8Gb module to give me 12Gb all up. This was fine however I started getting error messages about the Intel Rapid Start feature. So to sort this I disabled the IRS by deleting it. I have since decided to sell this computer and wanting to get it back to an "out of the box" state I did a system restore. This was fine but the IRS error message issue returned. In an effort to solve this I booted into the Audit (OOBE) mode in order to remove the IRS feature. To cut a long story short this has some how screwed up Windows 8. I purchased a set of recovery disks from HP which ran perfectly only to finish by saying the recovery attempt had failed with an option to retry. Further attempts using the disks gave the same result. Also the following information was displayed below the Recovery Manager dialogue box:

Now when I turn on it brings up the HP logo only then and displays the same error message about the recovery failing. When I tap the ESC key at startup I get the F key options to set boot options, BIOS setup etc but as soon as one of those F keys is pressed again it starts up and goes to the Recovery failed message. Also attempts to use any F keys at starup all fail. I think somehow the OOBE mode has got locked. Some forums suggest I need to get to the CMD prompt to run sysprep commands to try and unlock. I cannot get to the CMD as cant access WIN 8 recovery environment. I have removed the CMOS battery in an attempt to try and rest BIOS but again no success. I am now totally over it and ready to put an axe through it. Any ideas on how to sort this in order to retain my sanity would be very much appreciated.

I'm not very familiar with this issue myself, as this is the first time I have ran across anything like this. 
Where did you "delete" IRS from? Did you just uninstall the software that was installed on the computer?
I consulted one of my colleges about this issue and he recommended that you run the recovery discs and to omit the last disc. I have not actually done a recovery myself with WIndows 8, so that sounds a little bit odd to me, as I would think that you would need that last disc to complete the installation. However this is what he recommended, so I am passing that information along to you. If that doesn't work for you, let me know and I get those (and any new, if any) error logs checked so that we can pinpoint what is exactly causing this issue.

  • Wrong version of Win 7 after system recovery.

    My Pavillion dv7 I purchased from Best Buy about 6 months ago hiccuped and died. I wasn't able to do a system recovery, but was able to do a system restore.  After figuring out that I needed to turn off the wi-fi, I have stumbled across another problem.  The activiation key on the sticker on the bottom of the computer will not activate Win 7.  The sticker says that it is for Win 7 Home Premium while Win 7 Home Basic is currently installed.  How can I unlock the correct version of Win 7 that was installed AND PAID for on this computer so it will function again.

    Do you still have the recovery partition?? You could mark the recovery partition (Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Disk Management) as active and reboot. It will (should) act like with the recovery disks in..
    If all fails, install an OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium (borrow, download etc..) and use the product key from the bottom of the laptop...

  • F3D failure during system recovery on my S1800-700

    When I try to use my system recovery disk I get through the reformat stage, but then as it starts loading software I get a !!!Error!!! F3D failed message.
    I've tried resetting Bios to default and rebooting from XP disk but without success.
    Anyone got any good ideas? I'm off to find my big hammer!

    I searched a little bit aroud in the net, but I found nothing about a F3D error message.
    Setting the BIOS to default was a good idea!
    My first question is about additional hardware. Did you upgrade any Hardware to your notebook (like RAM extension and PCMCIS Cards or Port replicator). If yes, remove it before you start the recovery procedure!
    Secondly is your CD drive ok? Does it make strange sounds, also with other CDs/DVDs? Or did a error message occure the last time when copied something from CD to HDD?
    In the end check also your Recovery CD if there is anywhere a scratch or dirt!

  • System Recovery Kit for dv7-3165dx fails to restore factory image to replacement hd

    I'm posting this wall of text here in case someone else has any suggestions before I contact HP Support to see what options they have.
    My attempt to recover the factory image to a replacement hard drive in an HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx notebook is failing. An error occurs when SM.exe is trying to merge the WIM files. The SSRD.Log shows an error:
    SM, 13, Set reference file fail
    after that, SM.exe displays this message when run from a command line:
    SM, Failure, Can not load imagex 1 from src WIM file
    The following are the symptoms that the Recovery Manager displays on the screen.
    The Recovery Manager reads the two DVDs and after a few seconds, it pops up an error message:
    Reducer
    C:\RM\Image\TempBASE.WIM was not found.
    The message has on "OK" button that when clicked on, closes the message window.
    After that, nothing happens. No disk or DVD activity for over an hour. The mouse moves, but no key presses have any effect, including CTRL-ALT-DEL. You can use the mouse to move the Recovery Manager window around, and there is nothing hidden behind it. Clicking on the Recovery Manager Back, Next, or Cancel buttons produce no response at all.
    The only option at this point is to hold down the power switch until it powers down.
    When the power is turned back on, the hard drive boots and Recovery Manager displays a message that incorrectly claims "Recovery is complete" and has a "Click Finish to restart" button. After clicking on "Finish", it reboots but since the System Recovery did not actually complete, all it does is display:
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart
    Before attempting the recovery, the notebook passed all diagnostic tests.
    The 2x2GB memory cards, which still have HP stickers on them, were tested with Memtest86+ V5.01 and completed over six passes in over seven hours with zero errors.
    The replacement 500GB HGST Travelstar Z5K500 drive was tested with gsmartcontrol. The SMART status showed no errors in the past with over 400 hours of power-on time. Both of the SMART short self-test and extended self-test tests were run, which it passed without any errors.
    The HP System Diagnostics from the Startup Menu were run on the memory and hard drive and they passed those tests without any errors.
    While waiting for the HP "System Recovery Kit for Consumer Notebook (3 Disks)" Software Part Number 599357-001 to arrive, both Fedora 21 64bit and Windows Vista 64bit were successfully installed on the harddrive.
    Both System Recovery DVDs were read on different machines without any errors. This System Recovery Kit supports the notebook's System Id which is 3638, so they appear to be the correct discs.
    Now a list of workaround attempts that were suggested.
    After the Recovery Manager failed a few times with the same error message, some googling came up with other users mentioning the "TempBASE.WIM was not found" error message. I tried these suggestions that I read about.
    Run KillDisk to fill the HD with zeros.
    Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
    Run the CyberLink Recovery Discs Utility (sp44645.exe).
    Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
    Installed Windows VISTA 64bit again and upgraded the BIOS from F10 to F13.
    Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
    Try only using a single 2GB memory card to see if it was a 64bit problem.
    Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
    The BIOS does not have an option to change from AHCI mode to IDE mode.
    I don't have a Windows 7 OEM install disc and am trying to avoid spending $100 to buy one.
    That is when I decided that it is not a PC hardware problem, but a problem with the HP System Recovery Kit. Here are the details of what I think the Kit is doing.
    After running Recovery Manager and getting the error message, instead of just re-booting and letting the "Recovery is complete" message appear, I re-booted with a Linux USB drive and inspected what was on the hard drive.
    fdisk -l shows this:

    Running gparted shows about 200 MB of unallocated space before the sda1 NTFS partition. The rest of the disk is unallocated after the bootable sda2.
    The sda1 NTFS partition has a \SSRD.Log file and an empty \RM\Image directory.
    The sda2 FAT32 partition has the Recovery Manager application files in it:

    The SOURCES directory has boot.wim, and the TOOL directory has all the programs, like Reducer.exe and SM.exe, in it.
    After shutting down the Linux system and rebooting, the Recovery Manager then boots from sda2 and displays the "Recovery is complete" message and "Click Finish to restart" button. During this process, it removes the sda2 partition and marks the sda1 NTFS partition as the active bootable partition. When the PC restarts, all that is left is the sda1 NTFS partition with the empty C:\RM\Image directory and the SSRD.Log file, so there is no BOOTMGR to boot with.
    The SSRD.Log file logs the tasks that the Recovery Manager performs.
    The Recovery Manager runs some initialization tasks and then reads the two System Recovery DVDs. It then calls MergeWimFile which runs SM.exe and starts to merge BASE.WIM with the other BASE*.WIM files. SM.exe merges 20 WIM files with log entries like these:
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE22.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE23.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE3.WIM

    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE6.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE7.WIM
    Then, with only two WIM files left, BASE8.WIM and BASE9.WIM, the log shows:
    SM, 13, Set reference file fail
    This must be when Recovery Manager pops up the "Reducer C:\RM\Image\TempBASE.WIM was not found" error message.
    That narrowed down the problem.
    I copied all of the WIM files and the TOOLS directory to a Windows 8.1 system. The two DVDs did not have any errors while being read. Running SM.exe from an admin Command Prompt with the same parameters that were logged in the SSRD.Log produced the same error message. There was an additional error message that appeared in the Command Prompt window:
    SM, 13, Set reference file fail
    SM, Failure, Can not load imagex 1 from src WIM file
    and the TempBASE.WIM was not created.
    SM.exe /? did not provide a help message. I could not find any documentation on the SM.exe command.
    If I removed three of the WIM files, (BASE7.WIM BASE8.WIM BASE9.WIM) then SM.exe could create the TempBASE.WIM file, but it would fail while merging index 2 of 3 with this message:
    SM, 11%, Merge index 2 of 3 Processing
    SM, Failed, Export image failed
    The TempBASE.WIM is 3,421,518 KB in size after that.
    This is where I came to a dead end and cannot think of anything else that I can do. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but it appears to me that there was some kind of error building this System Recovery Kit and it is not able to perform a factory install on this notebook.

    If I can figure out how to add an attachment, I will add the SSRD.Log file.  If not, then ask and I will post it as a followup.

    Downloaded Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit which contains the latest imagex program.
    Running imagex.exe on the BASE7.WIM file on the second System Recovery DVD:
    imagex.exe /info K:\PRELOAD\BASE7.WIM
    ImageX Tool for Windows
    Version: 6.2.9200.16384
    Error opening file [K:\PRELOAD\BASE7.WIM].
    The data is invalid.
    The same error message is shown for BASE7.WIM, BASE8.WIM, and BASE9.WIM.
    The other WIM files in the PRELOAD directory, BASE5.WIM, BASE6.WIM, BASE10.WIM, BASE13.WIM, BASE15.WIM, BASE17.WIM and BASE23.WIM, could be read by imagex without any errors.

    I had previously posted the issue as "HP System Recovery Fails on new HDD", however it appears that the reason it is failing is due to incorrect formatting of the hard drive:
    Went to purchase the oem HDD @ Tiger Direct (Hitachi 0A56415 Travelstar 5K320 Mobile Hard Drive - 2.5", 5400 RPM, SATA 3G, 250GB, 8MB Cache) but found it was out of stock. I purchased the suggested replacement  (WD Blue 320GB Mobile Hard Drive - Designed for everyday computing - 2.5", SATA 3Gb/s, 5400RPM, 8MB C...)
    I have attemptted the System Recovery several times each failing with errors. But after each failure the HDD is found to be incorrectly formatted as documented in the following link:

    After doing a little research, I believe your issue may be related to your new hard drive being an AF (Advanced Format) drive. Please see "WD Scorpio® Blue™ SATA/PATA Hard Drives", which indicates your WD3200BPVT may an AF drive.
    Please see "Cannot Recover the PC after Replacing the Hard Drive with an AF Drive (Windows 7 and Vista)" for information on this subject. While this document isn't for your specific computer, it is generic enough that it applies to your situation. If you wish to use your HP Recovery Discs successfully, you may need to purchase a non-AF drive.
    If your computer boots into Windows, please see "Identifying an Advanced Format Hard Drive" to download and run the HP Advanced Format Hard Drive Information tool.
    If it is an AF drive, please see "Preparing Advanced Format Hard Drive for Windows" and "Improving the Performance of an Advanced Format Hard Drive" for more information on the subject and possible steps to be taken to resolve your issue.
    Lastly, it may be necessary to follow Paul_Tikkanen's advice and install Windows Vista from a Microsoft Windows Vista installation disc as follows;

    You may also consider purchasing a copy of Windows 7 and installing that instead. Windows 7 SP1 has much better support for AF drives than the previous versions of Windows.

  • The system recovery disks I made for my HP dv7-1132 NR running Vista Home Premium 64 bit won't work.

    I just bought this laptop and I want to wipe the drive clean. It is an HP dv7-1132 NR with Vista home premium 64 bit but still on Service Pack 1. It came with no system restore disks so I made my own through the System Recovery Manager. Apparently the disks were created without any problems as there were no errors.
    When I tried to use the first disk however (by inserting the first disk into the dvd drive and re-starting the computer, Once it has re-booted I get the message:  
    "This PC is not supported by the system recovery disks. You will not be able to recover this system with these disks"
    Can anyone help me help me to either get these discs working or give me another work around that will wipe this hard drive? I am not a techie so my knowledge base is rudimentary. If you can give alot of detail in any possible fixes, that would be great!!!1

    Usually this is caused by missing info in the BIOS and must be corrected by service from HP. Enter BIOS by tapping away at the F10 key immediately after power on. Is all system info there,serial,etc?

  • Failure to down load CC Acrobat DC Pro for a second time after a system recovery

    Failure to down load CC Acrobat DC Pro for a second time after having to perform a system recovery.
    The previous 'DC Pro' is not showing as not being an installed program.
    When trying to perform the update again an error shows in the Creative Cloud window 'the download appears corrupt please try again in a few minutes(26).
    Trying again both in a few minutes and after a restart the same error message shows again.
    What next?

    check the dl'd file size vs expected file size to see if you're getting a completed download.
    also, you can try a different browser and/or different wired connection and/or a download manager.

  • System recovery disk failure Toshiba C655-S5300

    I tried using the FACTORY system recovery disks on my son's Toshiba C655-S5300 laptop.  During the installation of the first disk, the installation appears to bog down and stop.The disk drive begins "chugging", and will keep doing so. I terminated the recovery and made the mistake of reformatting the HDD.  Therefore, I cannot perform a system recovery form the HDD.  A subsequent try at recovery resulted in the exact same thing at the same time in the recovery process.
    I thought that maybe the HDD was bad, so I tried it on a spare HDD of identical specs.  It does the same thing on that HDD!  Both HDDs appear to be still functioning well, so something else is wrong.
    Does this mean that the factory recovery disks are bad?  What other things can cause this?  What other options do I have to restore my son's computer?

    It does sound like the most likely cause is bad recovery discs. However, there could also be a hardware failure in the laptop such as the optical drive although this is less common.

  • Dv4-1275mx Replaced Hard Drive Windows Vista System Recovery Failure

    I have a HP dv4 1275mx laptop and I just replaced the hard drive.  I got the Vista 64-bit hp system recovery discs from HP but the recovery has failed 4 times.  The hard drive is brand new and has more space than the old one.  It's a Western Digital 640 gb scorpio blue sata 5400 rpm.  Windows will not complete the download.
    On the original hard drive, I upgraded to Windows 7.
    Error message:
    [17:18:51.36] chkerrBB.cmd Detect some error during PININST_BBV.
    [17:18:51.37]  chkerrBB.cmd check c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootWarn.log

  • System recovery fails after upgrade to Win 8.1 on Satellite L75D-A7283

    My elderly uncle forgot the password to his Win 8 user account sometime after upgrading to Win 8.1. He was the administrator, we haven't been able to get Microsoft to reset the account, so I thought to roll back the computer to its factory installation of Win 8.
    However, when I try to do that, I get as far as the Reset your PC screen and find that the only target OS is Win 8.1, not the original Win 8. Ok, I accept that. But after choosing to restore Win 8.1, it says "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."
    I have examined the disk by removing it and attaching it to another computer and find that both the original Win 8 recovery partition and the new Win 8.1 GPT recovery partition are both there. They just don't seem to be accessible.
    It seems that the Win 8.1 upgrade has made the original factory recovery partition inaccessible, which is not particularly helpful. We have no recovery disks to work from, so I think my only recourse is to try to get a Win 8 factory recovery disk from Toshiba, but I wondered if anyone else has a suggestion? Thanks.

    It's my understanding the upgrade does not modify any other partitions while upgrading Windows itself. Seems likely something else is wrong.
    If you did not create recovery media before and cannot do so now, then obtain it from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here.
    All the information in the section Recovering the Internal Storage Drive, which begins on p. 53 of the User's Guide, should still be applicable.

    Tried it with HP also with no luck in connecting with them.

    Appears virus modified Recovery partition on 6-10-12.

    Looked at several problem resolutions in this forum, but found none regarding my problem, other than buying system disc from HP.
    I made a system recovery copy on an external hard drive just after buying my notebook. It appears that my system recovery partition has been modified by a virus. My question is: how do I use it to do a full system recovery? When I use my pc's software to do this, I choose "Use a system image you created earlier to recover your computer. Then it asks me to insert the admin's password to pull the Recovery program from the hard drive! The next window doesn't give me the 3rd step, which is: Click "Use a system image you created earlier to recover your computer", and then follow the steps. It only shows:" resotre using preinstalled recovery options, or resore using a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc."  Thank you very much, your assistance is greatly appreciated!! Ric

  • HP touchsmart win vista system recovery

    I do not have internet connection. So my question is can I do a system recovery to factory state without being connected to the internet? Now my printer hung up while I was installing it, because I didn't have an internet connection. so I had to turn off my computer. the printer prints ok. but I bought netgear 300 wifi boost and it undid something . i cannot get the pc to check for wifi avaiables now. It just opens dialog box and won't click connect to internet. Netgear uploaded from thier gizmo alone. this did not come from the internet cause i don't have internet. Now I don't want internet! I just want Windows vista let me open my programs and uninstall my programs and work fine! Windows Vista keeps telling me I am not the administrator! this is my PC ! I want control of my  own PC not Microsoft or HP or anybody else. If I want to change the registry I should be allowed! or msconfig. This darn Vista won't let me change anything for the better. It won't capture video on the webcam either. I want to control my PC. and if I ever buy a new PC it will be a MAC. Jobs R.I.P.

             Welcome to HP's forum. Wow what a mess. Malware has done some damages. Yes unfortunately you will need Internet connection to do the full factory restore. For at least for several days while it updates. Your computer will need the serivice packs witch are downloaded with the updates. Ounce you have completed your recovery. Your computer will be much easier to set up including your Internet connection and Net Gear as well. Remember Netgear is tricky to set up because it will open up on website. When you set it follow your Net gear directions carefully. Technical support phone numbers are included with Netgear. They will help you install it.
          You can still use the Internet if you choose to. This tool bar will help you protect your computer from attacks. Long as you land on Green website pages. Don't worry it will tell you the safe websites. Bad websites with malware / virus will not open. It is free.http://www.mywot.com/
            Vista computers take a while for updates in order for the computer to run smoothly and faster. Microsoft just released another big batch of updates for Vista computers last week. So I can not say how long you will need to stay on line for up dates. Apple computers are great but they do have down fault side and that is you can only use Apple software on it and you are very limited to what you can do on it. They all so do not get attack as much by virus / malware like Windows computers do.
           When you all so restore your computer set both HP's and Windows Updates to download updates but let me choose witch ones to install. This way you are in control and you do not need to stop working on your computer getting surprise shut downs or messages.
           Do not allow this malware beat you down. With Wot tool bar and your Anti virus / Spyware software you should be in good to go hopefully it will be your last factory restore you will need to do.
          Yes you can remove this attack from your computer but it is very time consuming and can be a pain if it keeps reproducing and renaming its files untill you have located the mother file and deleted it. To do this is by opening up C drive and checking every single file and looking for strange files and dates that they were in stalled. It much faster to a factory restore when you have lost control of your computer as you have.  It's not the computer it's what attacks the computer witch causes this type of issue. Yes it happens to Apple computers as well no where as like Windows computers do.
           Now you know about malware and some times they can be as bad a virus if not worse. frrw.

  • System recovery - notebook - Pavilion dv7 - Windows 7

    I have been doing a system recovery/factory reset on my laptop which didn't complete the first time I tried.  I found on a troubleshooting list that the wireless has to be turned on when completing this process for notebooks that have wireless LAN device which I am pretty sure that mine does but i can't get the wireless to turn on.  Any suggestions?

    We see a lot of posts regarding issues with Recovery. Wireless is only one of several causes. A faulty hdd, memory can also cause it.Have you tested yours using the F2 Disgnostics at boot?  I have even seen at least one poster who solved his problem by removing the mSATA drive first. Many,not all, laptops have the mSATA cache disk.
    If you can read the 25 character Microsoft Windows 7 license key attached to bottom of laptop , you can download a Windows 7 ISO file to burn to a DVD The version must match the one listed on the Microsoft COA sticker.

  • My Pavilion Dv7 Laptop wont start up the system recovery options

    So i was told to turn off my laptop, then turn it back on whilist holding onto the F11 key. But when i do this my laptop makes loud beeping noises and stays on the hp logo, whilist it is on this screen is says 'System Recovery F11' on the left bottom corner and doesnt move from this screen, how do i fix this?

    Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP Notebook and getting a blank or black screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset.
    When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.

  • System recovery failure - Hangs on Check for medium in drive E

    I am currently installing a new hard drive on my Satellite P300 laptop (running vista home premium service pack 2).
    I have fitted the new hard drive and inserted the first recovery disc and the recovery process starts okay. The following is shown on the screen :
    Waiting for ODD to become available...
    ODD Drive E: ready.
    Check for medium in drive E:...
    At this point it proceeds no further and a cursor just spins continuously.
    Is anybody able to suggest how to fix this problem and complete the recovery?

    I will try again later and check the BIOS.
    I have never done the recovery before so I was unsure what to expect. I had done two sets of system recovery disks in case there was ever a problem with one of them, but I get the same problem with both.
    I have a Vista installation disk so I can do a clean installation that way and then add the Toshiba drivers which I can copy from the current hard drive. I am just concerned that doing it that way will inevitably result in losing some aspects of the laptop functionality that was originally part of its installation from Toshiba rather than Microsoft.
    I know where the Toshiba driver folder is located but you can guarantee that there will be something that is located elsewhere that turns out to be critical to some part of the laptops performance!
