HP dv9629ca Laptop (Ram Question)

Here is a RAM question. The Laptop had 2 one Gigabyte SO-DIMMs with them both installed the PC would not boot. the lights would come on but the screen remained black. I thought it was a RAM problem since when I would only put in a single stick of RAM the computer Booted no problem. I figured the one ram was BAD. Yet when i bought a 2GB SO-DIMM and added it to the 1GB already inside the computer wouldn't boot just like before. so I removed both rams and Put the 2GB stick in where the other was working and It shows 2GB now. I Know the Laptop maxes out at 4GB of RAM with a 64bit version of Windows installed. Is it possible to find a 4GB SO-DIMM and put it into the Slot that works or will it only accept a maximum of 2GB per Slot?
Laptop Details
AT newegg.ca they have a Single SO-DIMM that is 4GB the Laptop Max is 4GB. Not sure if it would read 4GB coming from a single SO-DIMM

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion dv9629ca Notebook Computer and here is the HP Pavilion dv9500, dv9600, and dv9700 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service Guide for your computer. Both pieces of information indicate that 4GB (2 X 2GB) is the maximum. 2GB is the largest size supported in each slot.
You may wish to clean the slots or reseat the memory... you may also want to inspect the slots for debris or bent contacts.

  • VERY SPECIFIC RAM QUESTION (not answered in prior topics)

I have a very specific RAM question. I've been pouring through the discussions and I see TONS of stuff about the proper way to upgrade RAM. I've done that before without incident, but here is my dilemma:
I'm using the 3.0Ghz, 8-core, MP currently with 8GB of the 667Mhz RAM (8x1GB). The memory is all matched from OWC and I have had no problems.
I just bought 16GB of new RAM from OWC (4x4GB).
I'm going to remove all 8 of the current 1GB DIMM's, and place two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser A, and two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser B. That will give me 16GB's in matched pairs on slots 1 & 2 of both riser A and B.
My question is this: Should I install two of my old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser A, and two of the old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser B (for a total of 20GB's)?
I've read that having all 8 slots filled = better performance but I'm not sure the mix of 4GB DIMM's and 1GB DIMM's.
    Any Thoughts?
    Thanks So Much,
    Tom

Optimally you want matched quads in each Riser. However, Bare Feats did some memory benchmarks that you might wish to read regarding memory performance versus different configurations. As for proper installation see the following:

  • IMac user Installable Memoery -512MB PC133 144-PIN SDRAM SODIMM LAPTOP RAM

Will 512MB PC133 144-PIN SDRAM SODIMM LAPTOP RAM be suitable for my iMac G4 800? The spec seems to meet the requirements as specified in other posts. It is available on e-Bay at less than £25.00
Thanks in advance of your help

Well that is the correct specification, but as always buyer beware on ebay. Is that seller going to replace the module or accept a return if the module doesn't work? Having had trouble with cheap (and even branded) RAM in the past I only buy from reputable Mac-friendly suppliers now and happily pay the extra for the piece of mind:Crucial

  • Laptop Ram compatible question

    Can I add a 2gb 2rx8 pc2 6400s 666 12 e3 Samsung Memory chip  to my new HP Pavilion dm4-2035ca to increase the total ram to 6GB, the 4 and 2

    Hi:
My recommendation is to take the guesswork out of the process, and download and run the free Crucial Memory Scanner, which will scan your notebook and report how much and what kind of memory you can install in your notebook.
Then you can either purchase it online from there, or buy it elsewhere.  The good thing about Crucial memory is they guarantee compatibility.

  • Laptop Build Questions

    Hello all,
I am replacing my old desktop and laptop with a new laptop that is better than both. I am a film student and I prefer to do my editing at home as opposed to the school so editing capabilities is a must. I own the Production CS5.5 and I would like to build my laptop to match. I've decided on an Alienware because they are the only ones who provide Nvidia cards in a laptop and provide a nice exterior at a somewhat reasonable price, and I am deciding between the M14x and the M17x. My main question has to do with a video card - the cheaper laptops come with a Geforce GT555M card with either 1.5GB DDR3 or 3GB DDR3. The higher end laptops have a Geforce GTX560M or GTX580M with DDR5. Can those higher end video cards enable GPU acceleration? If not, is the DDR5 worth the upgrade to the more expensive laptop?
Also of question is the upgradeable memory. What is the performance difference between 8GB and 16GB? Is it worth buying the more expensive laptop for the ability to upgrade to 16GB alone?
Lastly, will the addition of an eSATA port for external storage make a big difference? I'd rather keep my storage external so I can move it to school when I need to, and because I just won't be able to get the kind of storage that editing requires in a laptop without losing another feature that I want like an optical drive or portability.
I'd rather go with the cheaper, lighter, smaller M14x if the hardware differences aren't going to make a huge difference. If they are, then I'll know what I need to do. Of course, everything would be much easier if editing applications would just support ATI cards. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm sure that you are already well aware that video editing on a laptop has compromises, so the objective is to get the best mix of features and specs. considering your budget and tolerance for carrying weight and size.
Regarding GPU, the GTX 460M and 560M have reportedly been working well, and while the more powerful GTX video cards sound great they are more difficult to cool and would not likely be as robust for video editing. DDR5 is better.
Regarding CPU, you did not ask, but make sure you choose a quad-core 32nm CPU. Even the slower versions work pretty well and will save lots vs. the faster models of CPU in that same series.
Regarding RAM, go with 16GB for sure if you care about rendering speed (i.e. burning a DVD or Blu-ray). You can squeak by with 8GB, but with RAM prices today I would not suggest it.
Regarding eSata, I REALLY like it for laptop use. Fast and very reliable. USB 3.0 would be a second choice, and firewire 800 a distant third. USB 2.0 is pretty much only useful for backing up files on a video editing rig.
Regarding brand, Sager is the first choice around this forum for mid-priced laptops ($1500 to $2500) and high-priced ($2500 and up). Asus and MSI have some offerings that are more affordable, but do not have eSata ports.
Multi-spindle laptops are great. Some larger Sager's take up to 3 hard drives! The ultimate for video editing would be a SSD boot drive (around 120GB) + RAID 0 array with two 500GB or 750GB 7200 rpm drives. If you go with a smaller form-factor that cannot hold so many drives, Hitachi's G-RAID mini is a very nice small, fast RAID 0 2.5" drive solution that speaks eSata, firewire and USB (only 2.0); only downside is you need to plug it into a wall socket if you are using the eSATA.
Finally, don't forget to look at screen resolution, not just screen size. Personally, I would want 1980 x 1080 or better if I was editing on a single laptop display much at all.

  • If I increase my laptop ram to third party ram my warranty affected or not

    Hii,
I am Ved from India (Delhi). I have purchase Hp 2230tx laptop in Jan'2013, Its ram is 2gb thats is too low according to my usage.
But i have 4gb extra third party ram. If I install this ram in my laptop, "MY LAPTOP WARRANTY AFFECTED OR NOT".
    Thanks in Advance

No, upgrading the RAM will not void the warranty of your notebook. The RAM you install will have it's own warranty and will not be covered by HP.
If you have to send the notebook in for repair, they will require the original RAM be installed.

  • Pavilion ze4900 RAM question

Does the ez4900 have any RAM besides what is in the RAM bay on the bottom of the chassis? Some laptops have some RAM soldered into the main board and their bays are for expanding on that. The ez4900 I was given has no RAM cards in the bay. When turned on, it beeps 4 times but shows nothing on screen (screen stays black) and no keyboard actions seem to have any effect. There is a slow blinking blue light on the front edge that indicates suspend mode, and the battery light it on. Power supply has been checked and is working. I have not yet found an explanation on line for what 4 beeps may mean (or any beep codes for this model). So I'm wondering if the problem is that there is no RAM at all.
    Thanks!

Yes the problem is no RAM. Laptops with onboard RAM have not existed for many years because if that RAM goes bad the whole thing is junk.
You need laptop DDR memory which is easy to find. I have a drawer full of 128 meg laptop DDR sticks I would give you. It will not do anything without memory.

    Hi:
I sure hope so, since you ordered first and asked questions afterward.
Yes, if that is what your PC's memory specs state, that memory you ordered should work just fine.
There are several HP 1301 tx notebooks out there, so I don't know which one you have.

  • Pairs of RAM question

I have a gorgeous white MacBook on its way to me (after a couple of years of dreaming about a black small laptop from Apple, when it finally appeared I decided I preferred the white after all!)
I want to upgrade from the stock 512MB when I get it. I know that matched pairs are better for performance reasons but I want to upgrade to 1GB initially and then a month or two down the line I want to upgrade with a second 1GB stick.
    I have two questions:
    1) Is it possible to run the MacBook with 1 stick of RAM?
    2) Would I see any performance improvement when using 1GB+256MB over 256MB+256MB?
    Thanks!
    Gavin

    1) Is it possible to run the MacBook with 1 stick of
    RAM?
    2) Would I see any performance improvement when using
    1GB+256MB over 256MB+256MB?
Good question. I could not find a difinitive answer, just some indicators. Apple recommends two for best performance, to take advantage of the system ability to feed the cache.
This is a leap but if you use just one you negate that system access. The processor does not actually read the RAM. It reads the cache which is supplied by the RAM. I personally don't think it will give a performance boost with 1GB and a 256MB set. I think you will need 2 X 1GB to feed the cache correctly.
There were lots of references to people loading up on RAM. If you can at all afford it now, go for a matched set.
FWIW, the single core is a dual core which failed the test. It runs the same OS and presumably is accessed the same way as the duo.

  • Laptop Replacement Question - Would appreciate advice!

    Hi Guys,
After having issues with my new Macbook Pro applecare told me i would be recieving a replacement, and then sent me shipping labels through email.
Now im just wondering what i have to give back to apple, i bought,
15.4" Macbook Pro Unibody 2.93 GHz with 4 Gigs of Ram
    Apple Care
    iLife Preinstalled
Along with that i have my copy of MacOSX, the power adapter, all the instruction books and manuals and the original box
So what out of all this do i have to ship back, i know i can keep apple care and iLife, but will they ship me a brand new laptop in the original box with all the accessories or will i have to keep all my accessories?

    Hi Almeida5,
I take it they're replacing it with one of the current models? Because currently there isn't a 2.93GHz MBP, so did you confirm that you'd be receiving a 3.06GHz MBP?
I'll agree with what everyone else said... you need to contact Apple. Even if you call and ask to speak with someone else, I'm sure they can see the agent's case notes that you're working with on the replacement. Even another person at Apple would be in a better position to answer this question than anyone of us.
With that being said, I had a unit replaced a few years ago. The only thing that they required back was the unit itself. I didn't have to send any of accessories, software, cabling, etc. Now, they certainly preferred I did (in the box) but it wasn't critical.
iLife '09 comes pre-installed in all brand new computers from Apple, so that'll be the same. Did you mean iWork '09?
Regarding Applecare, they don't "just transfer" it over to a new unit. There's an extra process that occurs that you need to agree to regarding the terms. You can get a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the plan or have the remainder of the plan rolled over to the new machine (there'd be a loss of time coverage).
Again... the next best course of action, really the only course of action, is to get on the horn with Apple.

  • Graphics card and ram question

I am currently using a Toshiba Satellite L305D and i am trying to play arma 2 on it. But whenever i try to play the game is very slow and laggy. Is this due to my graphics card or ram? The gameplay is just very laggy. I need some help because i dont know what to upgrade in order to make this laptop a better gaming laptop even though it is not intended to be a gaming laptop. What things do i need for me to make it a gaming laptop? Better graphics card? more ram? better processor? Please help!!!

Hi there! The only thing you can really upgrade is the RAM on the notebook.

  • [Solved]Laptop lid question

    Hello,
I am really happy with arch on my laptop. Suspend2Disk works (although the light on my wlan-button stays off after wake up, but since the network itself works I am fine with that), suspend2ram works to.. and those two are crucial.
Even the Sleep-Button works and that is awesome!
But I would like the Laptop to go to suspend2disk when I close the lid, and honestly I am confused about how to do that.
I use acpid for the sleep button, which calls its own suspend2ram (works better then PM-utils for me btw). I call pm-hibernate by myself when I need it.
I read probably every article in the wiki but I can not put the puzzle pieces together.
acpid reacts on closing the lid, it does something with the ati-driver, probably to shut the screen of, or some.
But how can I change that to execute pm-hibernate?
BTW: it's Samsung P35, should that help.
    Last edited by thom_raindog (2008-05-17 20:17:20)

Run acpi_listen and close the lid to get the relevant event. If you get the same event for closing and opening the lid (I do) you can use something like
    grep open /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state || hibernate -F /etc/hibernate/ususpend-ram.conf
Of courseyou might need to change the path of the state file and the hibernate command as this is pasted from my handler.sh.

  • USB Hard Drives & RAM Question

    Hi,
I've been trying to use this IDE-USB hard drive casing with my macbook, but it doesn't seem to work well. The situation has improved a lot since the firmware upgrade, but its not completely resolved. Other cases seem to work just fine.
Funny thing is, that particular hdd case works perfectly fine on my old toshiba laptop, and on my desktop. If my primitive, comparatively cheap PC's can run it, why can't my expensive MacBook? Is there a way to fix this bug?
And has the 4GB RAM issue been resolved? Can I upgrade my MacBook without having it crash on me?
I really want Apple to take a look into this. Instead of trying so hard to diss PC's, Apple should actually look at their own products. I know its not a big deal, but its just ironic because Apple makes such a big deal about their stuff being so great. Phhh.
    Message was edited by: dac90

I bought it from a local shop, sorry can't really give you a link. But its similar to the ones you get on ebay. Just so you know, the casing isn't the problem - like I said, I've tried it on other computers.
I know I can always buy a new casing, but I need Apple to know that the USB has its issues. I mean - a premium notebook like this should be able to handle everything shouldn't it?
I don't see why OS X should be a problem - I've tried the same casing with different hard disks. So its most definitely a hardware compatibilty issue - particularly considering that the situation HAS improved since the EFI upgrade.

  • MSI 915p Thoughts & ram questions

    Hi All,
I'm thinking of buying one of  MSI 915P neo2 Platinum motherboards, but i have a couple of questions. Firstly i'm having dificulty finding reviews for this mobo, so i've come here to see what you think of it (unbiased of course). Secondly i'm confused over what type of RAM it supports, some parts sellers list PC4200 others PC4300, i'm even seeing the newer PC5300 being mentioned. And finally what the difference between PC4200 & PC4300.
