HP DVD Play BD fail

I believe have the latest firmware (sp44374 from april 2010) but I cannot play Avatar (either the stansard edition or the collectors). Any news on more recent updates? Why can't they fix this problem of not finding updates? I had to search the internet for hours and found nothing that works.

Hi,
It is a known issue with HP PCs running new BDs with HP DVD Play/MediaSmart DVD applications,
download and install PowerDVD Trial and play the Avatar Movie with.

You may have to wait until a new Update for HP DVD BD Play/MediaSmart is released
Thank You.

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

  • How can I watch a DVD playing on my iMac on my TV using Apple TV?

How can I watch a DVD playing on my iMac on my TV using Apple TV?

You can't. The only way is to transfer the movie to your computer and import to iTunes (making sure it is compatible) and either use home-sharing or airplay the movie off an ios device.

  • DVD plays well on some machines, gets stuck on others

Made a 20-minute DVD, having done all my editing, etc. in iMovie and exported to iDVD5. Once burned, tested it on my iMac and it worked fine. Also worked fine in a friend's stand-alone DVD player.
But some users since have this problem: the DVD plays well for a few minutes, but gets "stuck" after a while, and ultimately freezes. And it's not the same "stuck" point for each user (if that was the case, I would think the physical disk had a problem.) It's different points for different people that it seems to get "stuck" and freezes.
In one case, user took "stuck" disk out of stand-alone DVD player and watched it in their laptop (PC) and all went well.
Any hints as to why the DVD is getting stuck on some DVD players?

Probably a "bad" burn, the result of a DVD-R that some players don't like.
    Try these things:
    1) another brand of DVD-R (I Like Verbatim)
    2) Burn at a slower speed. To do this with iDVD you have to "save as disk image" and then burn the image with Disk Utility (DU) or Toast. For some reason, I can't always choose slower burning speeds with DU, not sure why.

  • My DVD plays on my Mac and new BluRay player, but not on my TV

I burned a DVD with three mp4 movies. The movies play fine in QuickTime, and the DVD plays without a problem on my Mac. It also plays correctly on a newer BluRay player. However, when I try to play the DVD on an older DVD player (about 3 years old), I have problems. The DVD starts OK, and I can navigate the menu choices. However, I find that after about a minute, the player simply freezes, and I can't play or change anything. I tried burning a new DVD with a different format, but the same thing happened. I think the problem might just be that my DVD player is too old, but I wondered if there is a setting in iDVD to be compatible with older players. Any help would be appreciated!

I tried burning a new DVD with a different format
I'm not sure you mean because ALL video DVDs are in multiplexed MPG-2 format.
I suspect your set-top DVD player doesn't 'like' writable' media (it used to be fairly common). You might try using a DVD cleaning disc in case there is any dust over the player optical system.

Please advise procedure (step-by-step) for playing DVDs on this computer.Presently plays CDs efficiently with a one-step click on "media suite" for play back. DVDs in same tray using "media suite" to activate generates only error messages ("cannot play")and sales pitches to purchase "Power DVD" playing services. All DVDs are commercial grade, brand new and play smoothly on DVD player peripheral to TV

That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the forums for Toshiba USA. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region.

  • I get an error message: "The file you are trying to play has failed to finish downloading and can no longer play." What

I get an error message for all the Apple tutorial videos:  The file you are trying to play has failed to finish downloading and can no longer play."  What is wrong and how can I fix it?

This means that you have downloadd the file from the internet, and the file did not download completely so the computer can't play it. To fix this, just re-download the file and make sure it finishes.

  • DVD playing region 2 NTSC Help!!?

Does anyone know if the DVD drive (super-combo) and software can play a DVD from Region 2, but it is in NTSC format?
Will it be able to read the audio and sub-titles? I want to be able to read the DVD ( region 2, NTSC format) without changing the region settings on my computer (since I can only do it 4 times).
Or can my DVD play other region DVDs? Has anyone ever come across this? Is there a software I can download to convert it? I called Apple, but they really didn't know....please someone help!?!

Let's put it like this, You are allowed 5 changes. (PERIOD)
If you live in the US you are in Region#1 so if you play a DVD from Region#2 thats your 2nd change and if you change back to Region#1 again thats 3. You have 2 changes left.
There is firmware available for some burners that will make your burner Region Free. This firmware is not available for all burners or drives. It depends on what drive Apple used in your machine, they use burners and drives from several different sources. The best way to find out is go to your apple and click on about this Mac, and then more info and then ATA, there you will discover the burner make and model used in your computer. I would then do a search of the manufactures web site and a Google search and see if there is a firmware update that will make your drive Region Free. Remember they are not available for all brands and models.

This means that you have downloadd the file from the internet, and the file did not download completely so the computer can't play it. To fix this, just re-download the file and make sure it finishes.

  • HT2801 Why doesn't my dvd play in the usb superdrive?  I have a Retina Display Macbook 15"

I have a 15" Macbook Pro w/ retina display.  Why doesn't the dvd play in the external usb superdrive?

Again, it's a regularly purchased (Hollywood or so) movie DVD, yes? And it's not only this one DVD, but every other as well, yes? Please confirm.
If so, it's the DVD Player app that hangs for whatever reason, and not a broken drive.
Not that it's a "final solution", but just to see if you can generally play DVD's on this machine, would you mind installing and trying MPlayerX to play a DVD? It's a little app from the App Store, free of charge and much used around the globe. (Actually, you may want to keep it as it plays many more different formats...)
Edit: Forgot to say that you will probably need to launch the DVD manually from MPlayerX, most likely after the DVD Player app crashed again.
Let us know what MPlayerX does. And still, don't forget confirming the above, thanks.

  • After exporting a slideshow in LR5 to USB or DVD playing quality is poor.  Any suggestions?

After exporting a slideshow in LR 5 to USB or DVD playing quality is poor.  Any suggestions?

It would be more helpful to understand your workflow and what type files you have made.
Are you using audio from both cameras? Do the changes/problems correspond with the camera switch?
Try this with a minute of the problem footage
Export a QT reference file(export QT(not QT conversion)-uncheck make self-contained in the lower left)
(a reference file is like a band-aid- do not use more than once).  Listen to it in QT- how does it sound?
If you have a mix/audio problem here it is most likely related to what you are exporting from FC.
    If it sounds good:
Create an AC3 and MPG2 of your minute test
Create a DVD with a track of your 1 minute test.
Build the dvd to a folder on your desktop.
Open the Video_TS(from the build folder) in the Mac DVD player App. Whatever you see and hear in the app is exactly what will end up on the burned disc. This is the best way to QC the DVD before you burn it.

  • Images jumping when DVD played on TV

I am working on a DVD slideshow project where the quality of the visual images is top priority. I am using digital photos stored in iPhoto.
I have made 4 short versions to compare the quality of the final products:
    1. used iMovie (varied transitions and times per slide) to build the slideshow then exported to iDVD and burned to disc. (I did not let iMovie render.)
    2. built the slideshow in iPhoto (varied transitions), exported to QuickTime Movie, then to iMovie and finally to iDVD.
    3. built the slideshow in iPhoto and exported to iDVD from there.
    4. used iDVD to build the entire slideshow from the iPhoto album: chose "page flip" as the transition.
The KBE was off in each case.
Version #4 looked the best on the computer monitor and so I went one step further with this one and added music - a piece stored in iTunes Library.
All four versions were burned onto the same disc and all four played smoothly on the computer; however, when I played the disc on my television, the images in version #4 'jumped' - each image was clear for only about a second. The television is HD.
Is there an explanation, and hopefully a fix, for this problem? Since the only difference between version #4 and the other three is the addition of an audio track, would that have created the problem?

I'm not sure why that is happening. You could try reburning at a lower speed and changing your disk brand to another high quality brand like Maxell or Verbatim. Make sure you have at least 10GB free disk space to burn. I doubt that the music is the cause, but you could try changing or eliminating that too, as well as eliminating or changing the transition. To adjust your burn speed you would need to save your iDVD project as a Disk Image (from the File menu), and then burn it using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. (When you open the Disk Utility window, if your iDVD project is not displayed in the left hand pane, then drag it in there. Select it and burn.) On my computer, the burn speed defaults to 4x, which is slow enough. Alternatively, you could burn using another program like Roxio Toast, that gives you more burn speed options.
You've done some handy research, and perhaps you could share your findings. Which of the methods that you used produced the clearest images in the final burned project when you played back your DVD on your TV? (Obviously you were having trouble with the iDVD one, but you might get it working.) Others have remarked that iDVD slide shows display better on computer preview playback, but I have not seen any comments as to whether the final burned product on DVD plays any clearer than slideshows created in iPhoto or iMovie.
Sorry I can't be more help. Perhaps others on this forum will comment.

  • No sound when DVD played on TV

Hi, I don't know if anyone can help.
I am new to creating DVD's, but did this weekend - my band's promo movie. I created the movie and rendered it to High Quality via iMovie HD - the movie includes the audio.
I burnt the DVD by Roxio Toast 6 via an external DVD writer (that always defaults to NTSC format, althugh I am UK based and tried choosing the PAL option to no avail).
When the DVD was put in the Mac it played fine with audio. When put in my DVD player to view on TV, the DVD plays as normal EXCEPT there is no sound!
Does anyone have any ideas why this might be the case, and if there is a solution that doesn't cost squillions of pounds?
    Many thanks!
    Ian

When the DVD was put in the Mac it played fine with audio. When put in my DVD player to view on TV, the DVD plays as normal EXCEPT there is no sound!
It sounds like your PAL DVD player doesn't like to play NTSC discs.
Take a look at: Exporting your movie for viewing in a PAL or NTSC format at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/HD/en/im110.html
Note it says When you first create a new project in iMovie HD, you can select a video format for the project.
BTW, with Toast 6: select the Video tab. To the left of the window you should see Advanced - Select Advanced - then under Options, select PAL.

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
    3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
