HP dvd640v Lightscribe Device

I have an external HP dvd640v Lightscribe writer. I initially installed it onto a Windows 7 Startup OS, which I then upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. The device was running fine until yesterday when for some reason (maybe after a system auto update?) my laptop stopped recognizing it entirely. My laptop first began to show the following error when I attempt to reinstall the device driver: "Invalid WinNT Major Version #". Now, after trying to run the driver installation again, the installer program just won't run at all! I'm reading elsewhere that the device driver that came with the installation disk and that's available on HP's website is only compatible with XP and 2000 without any updated drivers for Vista or 7. What should I do? Please if you know a website with a Windows 7 compatible driver, etc. for HP dvd640v, let me know! I just bought this driver used in December and can't afford to buy another just for compatibility's sake!
Thank you in advance!

Hi,
You need to install HP DriveGuard 5 on the following link.

I have an HP dvd 840d disc writer with lightscribe.  I tried using different lightscribe software but a message comes up:  "There are no Lightscribe devices found on this system".  How can I correct this so I can use the lightscribe on my device?

I have seen many listed problems but no solution. My device is a TS-L632N and based on the most recent drivers I can find still not working. I looked in the registry and it is not listed under cdrom or
    {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
There are no upper or lower filters

I solved a similar but slightly different problem.
I have HP DV 6629US laptop - Atholon 64 with Vista 32.  Hard drive fried, and had to replace and rebuild.  During the rebuild could not get Lightscribe CD/DVD to be recognized.  Reading HP, Lightscribe, Optiarc (drive maker) realized this was probably a BIOS configuration problem  that is not easy to fix in Vista32.  The only way I figured was to find the conflicting driver and re-install.
After installing a drivers 1 by 1  I found the Synaptic pointing drive (PS2 interface) was the culprit.  There is no guarrantee this will work for you, but a simple solution would be to un-install and re-install the mouse-pointing driver.  Be careful, you will need to navigate via the tab and keyboard temporarily while the mouse is disabled.

  • I am facing 'How do you want to use this disc' whenever I read/open any lightscribe discs having data.

    Hi,
When I insert a lightscribe DVD/CD into a lightscribe optical drive, then when I click to open the DVD, I faced this error 'How  do you want to use this disc', although the DVD was full of data. When opening these
lightscribe DVD/CD via NON lightscribe optical drive, I noticed that the DVD/CD  opened well without any problems at all.
Also, how can the System show to me 'How  do you want to use this disc' , in particular when  a DVD is non rewritable(DVD-R) and also contains data)?
Bear in mind, not all DVDs/CDs were not detected. However, only full lightscribe discs' (having data)
However, even blank lightscribe discs were detected without problems. When insert a lightscribe disc having data, then I faced that error. However, when inserting  blank lightscribe discs I found that the disc were opened.  Also,
non lightscribe discs were opened well.
When checking the device manager, I didn't see any issue with DVD/CD drive. If there were a problem unrecongnising, then I would have seen 'a remarkable mark' in front of it.
Note: I have faced this problem after trying formating a rewritable CD inserted onto the drive. Althouthg the format failed, all data on the disc was deleted. Anyway, after that, then inserting full-lightscribe  discs are unregonised
Do you think the problem wth my optical drive. IF so, I would be saying why it wasn't happened with all other non lightscribe discs. If my lightscrib discs were corrupted, then why would they have opened well on another laptop.
    I have done:
Press the Windows logo key+R to open the Run dialog box.
Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then clickUninstall.
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.
    Restart the computer.
But the same prolbem is existing.
yes there is a virtual CloneDrive program installed on my PC, however, there is no any CD mounted into it. Even if a CD was mounted into Virtual Clondrive, there would be no problem at all, because the virtual CloneDrive is used to only
mount ISO disc images into it, and not physical discs.
Any I have do what you have said, when inserting a light-scribe disc having data, then I open it, I found this
NOTE: in the above screen shot there is a lightscribe DVD having data inserted. However, in the screen shot below, there  a ightsrbe DVD not having data inserted. In the first screen shot, the disc is not reconginsed by Windows, however, in
    the second is recognised.
Even when I have inserted a lightscribe disc not having data(empty), it opened well regardless of  what virutal CloneDrive is enabled or disabled.
But when cliced on my problem didn't solve,
A man should convert his anger and sadness into strength to continue living in this life.

    Hi,

    FIRST OF ALL:

My HP lapotp is well-cared, as opposed to my sister's Inspiron Dell laptop,
which is always thrown in dust without caring at all. Also, its battery is
always inserted even when it is fully charged while the laptop is plugged in to
    the main power supply.
However, my laptop is either used on only battery, or on plugin. Also, it is
    kept from the dust.
But, I really found that the battery of the Dell laptop
still lasts about three and half hours, and there is no problem cooling fan is
    not oproperly preporly.
I only remember one thing differently done on my laptop battery which is I
charged it fully, then I stored it without using it for about four months, then
when I reused it, I found it got worse over time. I.e. first time of using it
after storing,I found it empty, then I charged it again fully, however, then it
lasted about 2 hours, then 1 and half hours, next an hour, now it is only
lasting about 20 minutes without performance. If there is high performance, then
    the computer shuts down suddenly.
    My problem is follows:::
First: Whenever I inserted any Containing Data OR Data

I cleaned the drive, discs, and so on.
I have uninstalled the all third-party data recording software.
I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software which
came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
I have recovered my system from the Factory Recovery discs.
I have tried opening all those LightScibe discs not opening on my HP optical
drive, on a Dell optical drive, and all of them were opened well, although Dell
optical drive did not have a lightscribe feature at all., nor third party disc
    recording software
However, the problem is still with opening the discs LIGHT-SCRIBE
    Thus, my questions are:
How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with
    another one.
I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP
laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical
drive which is as follows:::(ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of
My Desktop Computer) ---while my optical drive of my desktop was connected to
the primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the
primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning
well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5,
something went wrong, and then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer
    (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOT recognised/Installed on
BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a
recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a
disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it
opened empty(no files at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot
to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was
still shown as installed on BIOS. However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried
clicking on it on BIOS and then clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be
re-recognized. However, that made no difference. I had to take part my computer
,and then reconnected the optical drive onto the secondary slave
IDE , and let HDD connected to the same primary master IDE.
Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs became being read
normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS]]]

  • DVD Burn problem. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use"

    Hello everyone,
I initially had a lot of problems with PE8. However the nVidia driver update solved most of them.
Just thought it was important to report success as well as failure!
However one problem remains. I get the following error at the 96% mark while burning. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use". It is always at the 96% mark and the program is "compiling [something]" when this happens.
Having searched this site I notice that user rgferg posted a similar problem 13 days ago but was redirected to repost in a different place, but never did.
I have tried to burn a 1hr clip 4 times and every time I have selected the slower burn speed (8MB/s) as has been suggested. It seems that inferior media is a culprit, so I have bought some [quality] Verbatim DVD-R media to try in my Phillips SATA optical drive. I am sceptical this will work, but open minded nonetheless. I will give it a whirl when my computer has stopped capturing the VHS I am working on.
Each time the burn failed the disk was automatically ejected and the burn process had actually started and progressed perhaps ~40% or so.
This indicates to me that it is a drive sharing issue, rather than a media issue. Somewhere on this forum it suggests that I go through a 20+ step process and delete/disable every piece of software that can compete with Premiere among other things. IF I do this what do I burn with outside of Adobe? Do I have to get imgburn or whatever it was called? What if I like Nero? Nero 6 has worked great for me for 3 years.
So given I am willing to uninstall my old optical drive burning software, who out there can recommened commercial software that for them creates a painless Adobe burning experience with no errors or conflicts? Perhaps there is another solution that I did not see on this forum?
I am running Windows XP SP3. I have the latest nVidia drivers for my SLI GeForce 7600 GS cards. I have 3 monitors. RAID 0 SATA, 2GB RAM, Athlon X2 5400.
    Justin.

OK been working through the list of 20 things Adobe recommends to fix DVD burn error. No luck yet:
    system meets minimum requirements
Project size does not exceed disk capacity
successfully burned project to DVD folder -thus skip to step 8.
      8.   Using new blank media for burning
      9.   Try different media and DVD burners. Bought Verbatim DVD-R. Don't have another DVD burner. Adobe's supported burner list is VERY short, so of course mine is not on it.
      10.  Uninstalled Nero 6. Did NOT uninstall Acronis True Image workstation or Lightscribe. These do not access the drive unless I say so!
      11.  Have not yet disabled startup items and services. This will take a lot of work and will leave to last. Deactivated Spybot thus far.....
      12.  Disabled IMAPI CD burning COM
      13.  DMA if available already set. Haven't set this in BIOS yet. I already think it is, but will check next boot.
      14.  Updated DVD firmware
      15.  Already updated nVidia drivers
      16.  Don't have any other DVD drives to disconnect.
      17.  MPEG workaround. Will resort to if required.
      18.  Disable Autoplay? XP only has "prompt me each time to choose an action". I have set this for ALL file types.
      19.  Have NOT refreshed the DVD drivers in the registry. This step involves uninstalling PE8. Will leave this as last resort.
      20.  Visit forums to see if other have the same problem. Hi guys
So still working through some of the items above.
Can anyone direct me to advice on how to write the encoded files sent to the hard drive, or the VOB files that PE8 failed to burn to a disk? Will the former work with DVD menus?
    What a process.
    Stay tuned.
    Justin.

I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software which
came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
I have recovered my system from the HP Factory Recovery discs.
I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical drive which is as follows (ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer) ---while my optical drive of my desktop was connected to the primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5, something went wrong, and then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOT recognised/Installed on BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it opened empty(no files at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was still shown as installed on BIOS. However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried clicking on it on BIOS and then clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be re-recognized. However, that made no difference. I had to take part my computer ,and then reconnected the optical drive onto the secondary slave IDE , and let HDD connected to the same primary master IDE. Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs were read normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS

I understand that you are having an issue with your battery and the lightscribe drive. You would also like to know about DL(Dual Layer) support.
Here is a link to  Troubleshooting the notebook battery to assist with the battery concern.
You asked what dual layer support is , here is a definition from webopedia for the explanation.
    What is dual layer support
As you stated in your post your system supports  reading
The DL refers to dual layer, it does not list a CD DL.  What type of disk are you using?
From your post I noticed it does read the title of the disk but is unable to read the file.
Did you use any form of compression software  when writing the files?
Would you try inserting a  supported blank disk and writing to it.  If you can do this and read the disk after your drive is functioning.
The only other way to check would be to remove and reinstall it  into another computer to test if it works there.
Yes there is a bios update listed on the driver page for your notebook.

    Thanks a lot,
I wish that Paul_Tikkanen could have participated in solving this issue since I know he has insight in such problems.
Could you please be a little bit patient with me and go through all my points below and answer me::
IF you had  had a close look at my screen shots before, you would have seeing I have classified the disc haveing and not having the problem  into three categories each of which has its screen shots under it.
Blank Or Used(containg data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe is unable to be  read by optical drive
Not Blank(containing data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON -Lightscirbe disc opens normal
    Blank CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON-lightscirbe opens normal(Opens like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD)::
First The kind of discs I have been used to using, and seeing in the market are only:
    CD-R, C-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.
    However, I never ever used or saw 'CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM CD-R DL, CD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-RW DL, CD+RW DL, DVD-RW DL, DVD+RW DL.
Thus, Could you please be a little more detailed about each of the above disc types?
Second: I don't know if I can see 'DVD+R DL' written on the cover of DVD like what I am accustomed to see 'DVD-R'?
Third: What difference is there between 'DVD-RW', and 'DVD-RW DL', and 'DVD-R' and 'DVD-R DL'?

NOTE, those discs are for HP Factory Recovery Discs.I have created those Discs via HP Recovery Manager.  After creating them, I have labelled them with lightscribe software. ALL LightScribe are not read well and are unknown. Thus, my answer for your question is No, I don't use compression software unless if the program 'HP Recovery Manager' used a compression built-in tool while creating those discs'
Moreover, I have even restored my laptop from the HP factory Recovery discs which means everything must have been OK

Have you seen my screen shots well?
The key of my problem as to unable to reading LightScribe is the answer of this question of mine: Why do I see 'RAW' or 'unknown' as a file system for disc inserted whenever I insert a ligthSribe disc into drive?
All Blank Or containing data CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe are unable to be  read by optical drive. When clicking on drive 'duble-click', I found it opens  like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD player, however, 'with CD/DVD Player' is grayed out) When I chose 'like a USB FlashDrive, I found there was no disc inserted, although it was.
If you mean other discs not LightScribe, then I would be saying YES. And they all worked well, except the lightscribe(Blank, or containing data) were not read well at all.(all are unknown).

You mean I need to remove the optical drive and install on another laptop brand. If so, It would be compatible with any laptop brand?
NOTE: the reason around this problem is not lightscribe discs(I think) since any optical drive without having a lightscribe feature can read lightscribe discs. For instance the Dell laptop(Windows 7) could read all lightscribe disc or non lightscribe discs, even although it doesn't have any lightscribe feature, nor a disc recording software, except the Windows built-in default  tools. Dell optical drive, although not having a lightscribe feature, read all discs no matter the disc type is. Thus, In my HP optical drive having a lightscribe feature, I have decided to get rid of (lightscribe feature by removing the lightscribe system software, and all Cyber DVD-Suite). However, the problem is still with reading lightscribe discs.

    Updating the BIOS
First:: I have updated my BIOS from F.05 into F.1B by using HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) (sp55068) F.1B hoping to get rid of this problem, but that made no difference at all.
    NOTE
Other suggested that I insert an empty rewritable CD and try running the following command: format e: /fs:UDF
I did, but it didn't help.
Other suggested to download the latest version LightSribe system software, but I would be saying how to do that as long as HP would be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. HP will gradually transition products to comparable optical disc drives without LightScribe technology.
Second:: I've also been searching in HP forums, but always they said nonsense comments which I don't put up with. Take this one for example,
I'd be happy to do all I can to help with your lightscribe. Please note:Beginning May 2011 and throughout the year, HP will be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. HP will gradually transition products to comparable optical disc drives without LightScribe technology. While this transition may affect other HP products, this document is specific to HP notebooks.- Source

may be found on a number of public websites. Search the Internet for LightScribeto find these pages.
This blurb and much more information can be found in the following document; Creating Disc Labels with LightScribe

Finally I would be saying that LightScribe website is no longer available(discontinued). As HP said. IF HP customer care couldn't help their customers, I think it would be better to completely discontinue selling HP products.

  • LightScribe SuperMulti DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support is no longer able to read all lightscribe discs(Blank or Containing Data)

    Hi,
The product Name of my computer is: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment
    Notebook PC support
The number of my computer is : LM610EA#A2N.
Could anyone please at this splendid forum take some of their precious time
out to really reply my questions and solve my problems?
    FIRST OF ALL:
My HP Pavilion Laptop is about 3 years old.
    My
sister's Dell Inspiron laptop is 3 years old.
My HP laptop is well-cared, as opposed to my sister's Inspiron Dell laptop, which is always thrown in dust without caring at all. Also, its battery is always inserted even when it is fully charged while the laptop is plugged in to the main power supply.
However, my laptop is either used on only battery, or on plugin. Also, it is kept from the dust. But, I really found that the battery of the Dell laptop still lasts about three and half hours, and there is no problem cooling fan is not properly properly.
I only remember one thing differently done on my laptop battery which is I charged it fully, then I stored it without using it for about four months, then when I reused it, I found it got worse over time. I.e. first time of using it after storing,I found
it empty, then I charged it again fully, however, then it lasted about 2 hours, then 1 and half hours, next an hour, now it is only lasting about 20 minutes without performance. If there is high performance, then
    the computer shuts down suddenly.
    My problem is follows:::
First: Whenever I inserted any Containing Data OR  Data CD/DVD-RLightScribe discs, I found that HP optical driver was
unable to read them. When clicking on the optical disc drive 'double-click' while disc was inserted, then I found that disc opened as this way(NOTE: With a CD/DVD player is grayed out)
I  was told 'I suspect the culprit might be hardware and lightscribe dive might be
corrupt. Please sent it to service center to check. In addition, this thread could be as a reference:

Since no one replied to me at HP forums, although my HP laptop is one of their products, I had to post my problem here to know if my driver is corrupted and needs to be replaced or not.

However, this thread contains more precise details and screen shots about the problem. I was not able to understand whether all lightscribs were not unable to be read or not. However, I now recognized that, and I recognized that only all LightScribe(empty
or used) discs are unable to be read. furthermore, that other thread got far too longer to be followed.
Moreover, I would like you to take some time out to answer my problem about Lighstscribe discs since I am going to purchase 'A battery, Cooling Fan' From the HP agent in Yemen, which is far away from me about 1000 Km. Thus, If my optical disc drive was corrupted
as well, then I would be requesting the 'optical disc  drive' as well from the HP along with 'Battery, Cooling Fan' .

  • Has anyone had issues with their HP Lightscribe CD/DVD after a sofware update?

After recently installing software updates from HP and Microsoft my laptop no longer shows the drive with the CD/DVD under Computer. I can install a dvd and hit the Quick Play and it plays fine but it's also a lightscribe dvd burner and I can't send videos or photos to the drive because it's not showing up under the listed drives. Neither are my removable disk flash ports showing up. They were there before the most recent HP and Microsoft security updates installed. When I go to Device Management it shows up there but also shows an error message under the Devices Status: "This device cannot start. (Code 10), Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."  When I click to check for solutions I get the message back that the device is installed and functioning properly. I also checked the device driver and it's telling me it's the correct and most updated driver. i'm at a loss as I'm not at the point where I'm able to replace this laptop which is used for personal and home business use. Does anyone have a solution other than doing a total recovery? I tried taking it back to just before the last update but they're still not showing up. It's like something wiped them out.

Yes with some docks and car systems but I do not remember the specific devices. Sometimes and iOS update breaks compatibility.
    Try:
    - Go to the dock manufacturers and see what they say. Also see if there is a firmware available for the dock
    - Reset the dock
    - Sometimes this works:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
      - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Lightscribe driving me insane.

I just got a brand new 1.6ghz mac mini. To it, I have connected via USB to a DVD burner with lightscribe. In order to use this drive I spent $80, EIGHTY DOLLARS, on the latest version of Toast.
All of this was fine and dandy up until right now when all of it just decided to not work. Just last night I burned images onto 2 discs - now, suddnely, whenever I begin to burn, the program goes into "preparing to print" phase, and abruptly crashes. However the same drive and software work without a problem on my PowerBook G4! This mini has also been giving me problems with me HP 845C printer, which worked fine with my mini the first week I owned it.
It makes absolutely no sense to me, so I'm hoping someone else has had this problem and has a solution. Otherwise I'm just complaining. I thought macs were supposed to "just work," well, mine's doing exactly the opposite. Worked for a week, now it's not. Perhaps the intel switch wasn't such a great idea after all.
I'm begging for help at this point, this is drivig me bonkers.
    1.6ghz mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It may be a telling fact that two USB devices have failed on your mini at the same time, and it would be interesting to know if you've used any other USB devices with the system (such as the thumb drive you mentioned in another thread recently in relation to your PB), and if so, whether you had any error messages or problems either at that time, or with that same device now.
It is possible, for example, for a high-drain device to cause the mini's USB ports to 'crash' and thus for issues to develop with other devices as a result until they are reset.
You could try this procedure to see if it helps:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down
-Unplug ALL cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If that doesn't help, before you chase up the retailer who sold the mini, it may be worth calling Apple themselves and talking to them. They will typically run you through a series of troubleshooting steps - which are important in ensuring that it's the mini that's a problem (thus resolvable by repairing/swapping it) rather than a peripheral, which would mean the problem would recur with a replacement system.

  • 10.4.9 and Lightscribe Drive

Looks like another 10.4.9 problem, related to external drives.
I use a Samsung Writemaster SH164L external USB burner occasionally, and have not had issue with it until I updated to 10.4.9.
I took the opportunity to clean install before I updated, so the system was clean. Updated to 10.4.9 using the combo file (software update). Now the Lightscribe side of the device doesn't work. It burns discs fine, but won't do labels!
All firmware & drivers are up to date, and the drive works fine in Windows using my dual boot setup.
I've tried the reinstall of the combo file, disconnected the external drives and reconnected one by one, with no change. Repaired permissions etc.
Any more ideas? I am a n00b when it comes to Mac, so I hope it's something blatant that I've missed!
Lightscribe software was last updated by HP 31/01/07, and I've tried the Lacie labeller, and the free lightscribe one.
    Intel iMac 20" Duo 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Apple, please resolve. It's an OS update issue!
I have one LaCie D2 LightScribe DVD (used by my MacBook and my iMac) and I bought one for my father-in-law's Mac Mini, same model, same time. After all three computers upgraded to 10.4.9, the Read/Write functions worked but the Lightscribe function stopped working (communication error).
I worked with LaCie Support and they even sent me two new drives - they all had the same exact symptom (I swapped ports, I swapped computers, I did the Combo 10.4.9 updates, I swapped cables, I did the Lacie firmware/host/labeler updates, I did the LightScribe Simple Labeler). Nothing works.
After noting that my wife's PowerBook G4 was on 10.4.7, I tried the drives there. The LightScribe function worked!!!
Tell me I don't have to downgrade to below 10.4.7 and replace my Intel Macs with PowerPC Macs (I don't even know how). Please let me know when the patch to fix this problem can be downloaded.
I can provide you the System Profiles for my MacBook, my iMac, and the working PowerBook G4 to your deep support staff if you wish.

  • [Solved] Lightscribe LaCie 4L won't enumerate drives

There should be a better place to post this question, but 4L is a closed-source piece of #$%^, so I'm throwing myself at the mercy of the Arch forum.
I downloaded the '4l' package from the Arch User Repository, and I installed it and its dependencies without issue. I run the software, scale my CD artwork, select my Lightscribe drive, insert my Lightscribe media, check the print preview, and then press the 'print' button. "Printing requires root privileges." Okay, well, that's annoying.
I run 4L-gui with 'sudo,' this time, and go through all of the steps, again, except that, this time, it can't find a Lightscribe drive for me to use (and doesn't allow me to search for it manually), so that's as far as I can get. What the @#$%?
So, apparently, 4L-gui uses 4L-cli for a lot of its functions, as you might expect, including enumerating the available Lightscribe drives. Check this out:
    [david@myhost bin]$ ls
    4L-cli 4L-gui
    [david@myhost bin]$ ./4L-cli enumerate
    Using /etc/lightscribe.rc
    Drive path: /dev/sr0
    Usable: 1
    Full name: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653N 0208 164
    Model: CDDVDW TS-H653N
    Manufacturer: TSSTcorp
    Capabilities: monochrome
    Drive inner radius: 21700
    Drive outer radius: 59000
    [david@myhost bin]$ sudo ./4L-cli enumerate
    [sudo] password for david:
    Using /etc/lightscribe.rc
    [david@myhost bin]$
Wha-... Why?! It doesn't see any of my drives when I'm the root user, which means that I can't print onto my discs as either a regular user ~or~ root. I read a rumor that it uses /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info to find the drives that it's supposed to query, and that info obviously doesn't change depending on the user. I also read a lot that 4L-gui can only find optical drives whose names begin with 'sr,' which can be a problem on some flavors of Linux, but that's obviously not my problem, since my drive is sr0.
Can anyone think of any reason that '4L-cli enumerate' would find my Lightscribe drive without issue when I'm a regular user, but not when I'm a super user? This bull@#$% is driving me crazy. Closed source software can suck my @#$%. What a simple, stupid problem to be impeding me from using my hardware: can't find the device as root, but can find it as anybody else.
Thanks for any help that you can offer.

[EDIT 08/29/13] I think that the problem is related to the fact that the package in the aur doesn't really 'install'; that is, it fails to copy the binary files into any directory in the PATH, and so, when running as root, it couldn't find 4L-cli from 4L-gui... although that doesn't really explain why my default user was able to get as far as it did. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was using symlinks, or... it could be a permissions issue... I should have really isolated my attempts, better, to figure out exactly what solved the problem, but here's how I was able to get it to work:
I moved my working directory to the actual location of 4L-cli and 4L-gui (rather than using symlinks), and I chmodded them both 777. This didn't change the result that I got when trying to run 4L-gui as a normal user ("Printing requires root privileges"), but, when I ran 4L-gui with sudo, it worked, so... yeah.
Good luck, anybody reading this message in the future! My recommendation, really, is to just make sure that 4L is installed properly into the PATH. My guess is that, when running 4L-gui as root, it wasn't able to find 4L-cli where it was expecting to find it.

This problem sounds very similar to the issue I am having. On my system the left side USB port will not spin up either my Maxtor One Touch III or my LaCie All-Terrian drives. They just click a bunch. Apple has confirmed this to be a problem with the machine, and it is currently at Apple for repairs.
Acutally, my system has been to Apple twice for this issue. I sent the system to them about 3 weeks ago, it was sent back to me very quickly, but the problem still persisted. During that "repair" they replaced some sort of io card/connector on the left-side that included the USB port. When I got the system back the problem was exactly the same. Now, during the second repair the system has been in the repair facility for about a week now, and the Apple repair status site indicates "On hold - Waiting for ordered parts", so at least it seems they have identified a problem.
In your case have you tried both USB ports yet? Are the results the same for either port?
When I get the system back I will post more information. Hopefully I will receive it back early next week.
Good luck with your USB problems... And be sure to put pressure on Apple about this. It is not normal for your system to have these problems. It is a hardware issue.

  • Installing  LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with DL

Have just bought the LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with Double Layer for an incredible price if $44.99. Geeesh, why are they so cheap these days? I did researched this with LaCie customer/tech services and they indicated once the face plate is removed it will install easily into my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B model).
Has anyone else installed this and if so are there any issues to be aware of as part of the install process - oh, and did it work AOK ?
Thanks for any insights and/or feedback on this. I should be getting the LaCie burner next week sometime.

    FYI...
OK - so I received my LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer today. I thought I'd post my install experience before it all faded into the murky past. ;-)) I do this in order to help myself and for others who may wander down this install path. There are a few minor gotchas that if known ahead of time will make the install easier and less thought provoking for having to make decisions on how best to proceed.
Let me say up front, the install was successful, Apple's DVD SuperDrive device design is superb in that it allows easy removal in a dimensionally constrained space and the new LaCie device is now fully operational. I've played a DVD movie, it's compatible with the .Mac Backup 3 program after loading LaCie's software and my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B) now recognizes the device as a DL DVD burner (Vendor Supported). I've yet to use the LightScribe Labeler software, although I've installed it all from the supplied discs and latest updates from LaCie Support web site at http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers and select DVD from the drop down menu selection. I'm very pleased with this LaCie device at this moment.
Here's the install process step by step
    1. First power off and disconnect all external devices from the PM.
    2. Get your wrist strap on and ground yourself to PM casing.
    3. Lay PM on its side and remove metal side panel and remove clear plastic panel.
    4. Rotate both plastic latches that hold the SuperDrive in place.
    5. Disconnect the SuperDrive's flat wire ribbon from Motherboard - it has a convenient handle for pulling it straight up and off. Once disconnected, push it thru the opening to where the SuperDrive casing is located. This will be more obvious when you are actually doing this.
    6. Open the SuperDrive's Alu door by pressing lightly on it and sliding it down.
    7. With Alu door open use a finger nail to engage a portion of the SuperDrive's tray opening and push up and towards yourself and at same time with other hand pull up the rear most portion of the SuperDrive's casing. The drive should slowly slide away from its feet slots much like for the HDs. Slowly remove the SuperDrive and before it is fully out remove its power connector and then the flat wire ribbon from rear of SuperDrive. The SuperDrive can now be completely removed. Note that on my SuperDrive the flat wire ribbon was attached to SuperDrive's casing with a grey two-sided sticky pad. Remove the ribbon carefully from this and then remove the sticky gray pad and affix it to the same place on the LaCie device. Rememeber the wire ribbon's orientation as you will need to re-install this a little later.
    8. Remove the 4 black screw feet from the SuperDrive's lower surface. You will need a torx screw driver and may have to begin by losening them with pliers. Take these and screw them into the same spots on the base of the LaCie device.
    9. Remove the stainless steel face plate from the SuperDrive - ply up the end wraps and it will slide and pull off easily. Place this onto the LaCie device.
    10. Put the SuperDrive aside as you're all done with it now,
    11. Press the tray release button on the LaCie device and pull off its plastic face plate - comes of easily.
    12. This next step is a bit tricky, a bit time consuming and some care is needed. The LaCie tray eject button needs to be removed (you will notice on Apple's SuperDrive it's also missing, and there's a good reason for this). Use a small screw driver and pry up the right side (looking straight at the front surface of the LaCie device) of the button. It will come up and rotate to left some. The button is held on by a small plastic C-shape tab. Rotate the button to left until it comes off. This button cannot be left attached as when the LaCie device is installed the PM's Alu door opening mechanism will contact and interfer with the button and engage and press it down. Obviously this will make the LaCie device (and of course the removed Apple SuperDrive) think the tray needs opening.
    13. Leave the jumper on the LaCie device in its default "Master" location. This should be the right-most two-pin position looking at the rear of the LaCie device.
    14. Almost there - attach power connector and flat wire ribbon to rear of LaCie device and press the flat wire ribbon onto the sticky grey pad and slide the LaCie device into its holding slots by aligning those black screw feet with the slots. You may need to guide the other end of the wire ribbon thru the lower opening to the motherboard. Once the LaCie is in place connect the wire ribbon to the motherboard.
    14. Relatch the plastic levers to secure the LaCie device firmly in place.
    15. All done - so replace the plastic and metal side panel, reconnects things up and power on the PM. Go straight to the ASP and make sure the LaCie device is recognized and all the info is being displayed correctly. It will show Burn Supprt of Yes (Unsupported). Don't worry, once you install the included LaCie software is will show "Yes (Vendor Supported)".
Total time taken was around 2 hrs as I had to pause several times trying to figure out how to remove the SuperDrive with care and without any instructions to go by.
My LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer cost me $45 from Buy.com and it does come with two disc blanks - a Verbatim LightScribe 1x-52x CD-R 700MB and a Verbatim 16x SL DVD+R.
I recorded all the gory details from the LaCie device before installing it. Here's that info.

  • Lacie Lightscribe Burner says I need 1.2GB capacity to burn??

I have a basic Mac Mini (no superdrive) so purchased a Lacie DVD burner with Lightscribe... I tried to burn using iDVD. I have read on this forum that they don't not allow burning from 3rd party devices, so that I understand, but I try to burn using Toast 6, (even tried an earlier Toast application) Once I put a couple of videos and couple of tracks (which is the only media files I have on there at the moment) and try to perform a "data" disc, and hit the red record button and so on, the desired speed is set at "best" although I have tried the "16x" speed and even the "1x" speed, and after I choose record, it says it cannot copy, That - 1.2GB of capacity is required (xxxxx no. of sectors) etc. Which is a bit weird seeing how I have approx 27GB free on the Mac Mini..
There's nothing really to free up or delete on the Mac as most of the installs are simply updates. Mayube it's a media problem with the DVD's themselves? Hopefully someone else can provide any info on this

Forgot to mention, I am looking to buy an external hard drive (around 320gb) would this then allow me to burn from my external hard drive if I had toast etc. installed on that instead of the Mac's? Just an idea I was thinking of

  • Lightscribe no longer works

    Hi,
Last year I purchased a La Cie CD/DVD burning device that has Lightscribe technology. I use it to etch titles and images onto clients' CDs of photographs. It worked fine until last week when I upgraded my operating system from 10.4.something to 10.6.3. (Had to upgrade for a software compatibility reason). Now the Lightscribe does not work! At first it just created a black blur in a circle around the CD (you use special CDs and DVDs). Then I re-installed the La Cie/Lightscribe software. After that it would not let me hit the Lightscribe 'print' button, saying there was a communications problem between the computer and the device. So I re-installed software again. It all seemed to go well, it let me hit 'print' button. But when CD popped out at the end of the etching session, it was completely blank -- no picture, no title, no black blur. Nothing. Has anyone else had this issue and is there a resolution? Thank you.

Thank you. I was able to download an update off the La Cie site and now it works again. Thanks a lot. I also re-installed software. Not sure the re-install was necessary due to the existence of the update but, either way, it worked and I'm back in business.
