AC Adapter/ Elitebook 8730W -Can I use 200W safely?

I have an EliteBook 8730w laptop. It comes with an external 120 watt or 150 watt Smart AC adapter.
A friend gave me a replacement 200W AC Adapter which was originally for the 8740w. It fits my 8730w but is it safe to use as its a higher wattage than the original?

Hi:
You probably should call HP support and ask them.
I can give you my opinion, which is, it probably would be OK. It is also a smart A/C adapter and should quit charging your battery when it senses it is fully charged.
The wattage shouldn't matter. Your notebook will put less of a strain on the 200 W adapter than it did on the 150W one.
You may even want to touch the adapter to see how warm it gets. It would think it would get less warm than a 150W adapter since there is less demand on the 200W one.

EliteBook 8730w bluetooth absent in Windows 7

I've got an HP EliteBook 8730w (model no. ) with Wnidows 7 Ultimate build 7100 on it. I have drivers for just about everything, except bluetooth. The bluetooth device does not even show up in Device Manager. I tried downloading what I thought was the bluetooth driver for Vista ("Software Support for HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth Wireless Technology for Microsoft Windows Vista v6.0p" - sp39805), but it eventually tells me that I don't have a bluetooth device connected. Everywhere I look, the specifications say this model does have bluetooth. Any ideas?

Even though I'm running Windows 7 RC (Build 7201) and the EliteBook model I have is 6930p, I had exactly the same problem with bluetooth drivers.
It was really frustrating at first, but after poking around for some time I was able to resolve the issue.
Here is the solution that worked for me:
Enable "Bluetooth Support Servic" in your Services snap-in (type services.msc on the command line).
Download "HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth 2.0 Wireless Technology" from the HP support web site.
Extract files from the driver setup executable (in my case sp39479.exe).
Open the extracted folder, navigate to Win32 or Win64 folder based on your OS.
Find "Inst.exe" file and run it as an administrator.
Restart your machine after the installation.
Open DeviceManager in you Control Panel and click "Scan for hardware changes".
Wait for Windows 7 to detect & install your Bluetooth drivers.
Voila! Your bluetooth is good to go (hopefully).
Next step for me was hooking up my Wii Remote via bluetooth (http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/01/14/how-to-connect-a-wii-remote-to-your-pc/) and downloading GlovePie (http://carl.kenner.googlepages.com/glovepie) to start using the remote as a PC game controller.

Been googling for the past 45 min for a specific /etc/sensors3.conf for my elitebook 8730w but came up empty handed. Anyone know of some good resources?

Hi I have a HP EliteBook 8730w running Window XP 32 bit. I have a seemingly easy question. I can't find the hp system recovery. It is not in the start menu as far as I can tell and holding f11 on startup does nothing.

RAM upgrade on HP EliteBook 8730w

Hi, I just bought two new hynix 4GB SODIMMs (4GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-666-12) and tried to install them into my laptop without luck. The computer starts with black screen and after a second or two the numlock and caps lock indicator LEDs starts to flash in blocks of three. The computer won't boot past this. From what I can gather 8GB RAM upgrade is possible and the mentioned RAM should be the correct one. Could either or both RAM sticks be faulty? Any help is greatly appreciated!

If your notebook already has 1 x 4Gb Module and you just wish to purchase an additional one, use an application such as CPU-Z to match the specifications to your existing memory ( check the Memory and Spd tabs ).

I just bought an old 17" elitebook off of ebay for cheap and I was wondering what my upgrade options are for graphics cards? I know that in the elitebook your gpu is removable so it could be replaced with another card but what cards would be supported? I would like to install something like a gt 520m, gt 540m or a radeon hd card.

HP Elitebook 8540w RAM Upgrade

Hi,
I'm currently in the process of upgrading the RAM in my Elitebook 8540w. I have the Intel i7 M620 processor (dual-core) and bought the computer in August 2010. I also have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and 2x2GB (total 4GB) of RAM.
I looked at this document to see what were the possibilities: http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04150938&ver=25
Now, I see 2 conflicting statements in this document. On page 7, it says that 8GB modules are only compatible with quad-core processors (signified by two asterisks) and that it would only be possible to have 8Gb (2x4GB) total in my case. Then, on page 18, the table states that a 2x8GB (16GB total) configuration would be possible since there are no asterisks besides that configuration.
So which one is the maximum I can put in: 2x4GB or 2x8GB?

Hi,
The document is for many products for the whole series. Looks like your machine is a dual core machine therefore it only it supports only 8Gb for 2 slots (the first ** indicates 8Gb each slot and for a quad core you can get up to 4 x 8Gb = 32Gb).

EliteBook 8470P Screen Upgrade

Hi,
I am going to buy the EliteBook 8470P with the standard resolution as this is all that is offered from my chosen retailer. However can I have the screen upgraded at the HP Service Centre in the UK to the HD+ option at a later date? Of course, I will pay for this as this is an upgrade not a repair.

I'm at the moment looking for an good alternative for my 2 years old HP Workstation EliteBook 8730W.

I've fallen in love with the Envy 14-series and specially these three combinations of processors and memories:
1. Intel Core i5-480M processor (6 GB RAM DDR3) --> 8.499 kr.
2. Intel Core i7-720QM processor (4 GB RAM DDR3) --> 9.999 kr.
3. Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor/2.0 GHz (4 GB RAM DDR3) --> 8.999 kr.
The prices is in danish crowns and doesn't really matter to my choise but still my goal is to make the most of my money.
Is it a stupid question to ask if combination 3 will work faster than number 1?
If not - then its my question - otherwise I would appreciate all kind of input to this subject - maybe regarding other opportunities to my choise of PC.

i think you should go with option 3 first becase its 2nd gen cpu and its much faster than i7-720 and i5-480 .
as for the ram you can easily upgrade it later as you need it since it is user upgradable but the cpu is not upgradable. so go with the best cpu

Elitebook 8540 SATA Upgrade

Hello all.
I upgrade my notebook CD-ROM by SSD 250 GB drive and there is problem with R/W speed.
Current SSD needs to use SATA 6Gb/S to work on maximum speed.
Is it possible to upgrade my SATA 3Gb/s to SATA 6Gb/s ?

Yes it predates mSATA mSSD drives so the only way to have 2 hard drives/SSDs is to use the main 2.5 inch SATA bay and then also the "expansion bay" which can have a second HDD with the correct adapter or an optical drive. Here is the Service Manual:

It also predates SATA-III so your best speed is SATA-300, but I believe the expansion bay interface is SATA-150. You should put the operating system on the SSD in the main bay and then the regular mechanical HDD in the expansion bay for storage only for optimum performance.

Hi. I've downloaded Windows 7 RC 32-bit from microsoft.com. Tried to install from DVD burned several times. No success After Windows loaded files Stop error appears:

HP EliteBook 8730w sound with no Bass

Hi Guys
My laptop is only 3 weeks old, I have had Windows Vista removed and Windowx XP installed for work purposes.
Originally music on the laptop speakers and headphones was scratchy, so I has the speakers and sound card replaced.
This has removed the scratchy sound, but the music is still flat, with no bass what-so-ever.
Guys in my office has the same HP laptop and theirs work fine.
What am I missing?

Lack of Bass
Laptop is barely three weeks old. Love it to bits but compared to my previous Lenovo, the lack of bass drives me crazy. I am a programmer and I write code with my earbud glued on.
Speakers vrs Headphones
Noticed that sometimes with the earbuds plugged into the headphone jack sound still came outta the speakers. Going into Control Panel, the ff dialog confirms my suspicions that there is a problem. I have my earbuds plugged in but judging from the active sound meter, to the system, it's the speaker playing and NOT the headphone.
Slight Improvement
Clicking on the Speaker and then on Configure I managed to improve the bass a bit by tweaking the ff:
Conclusion
Sound plays alright but the bass response and dynamic range suffer? Basically for us Bassoholics, it simply aint good enough.
Are there any workarounds anywhere or software out there that might improve the bass response and overall frequency range?

HP Elitebook 8730w ESATA Problem

I am on Windows XP Pro. Just bought a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex with ESATA port.
My problem is when I plugged in the external drive, the laptop doesn't detect the drive. I don't think the drive needs special driver. It's plug and play.
Anyone please share your experience and the solution for my problem.

Yes, AHCI would need to be enabled in the bios to be able to hot plug an e-sata device.
Problem is if it is not enabled when windows was installed, it cannot be enabled after unless it is W7 or Vista, if you are using XP, then you need to enable ahci in the bios and reinstall XP.
If you are using Vista or W7, see this article, enable AHCI in the registry, shut down, enter the bios and enable AHCI, save bios changes and exit bios, start windows, see if it works now.

HP Elitebook 8730w audio issue?

When I don't plug in my headphones, it shows it as plugged in.
When I plug it in, it shows it as not plugged in.
If I uninstall the sound driver, it let's me listen to music through the headphones but skype comes through the speakers.
It also stops working that way and I have to do it again eventually.
I get no sound via headphone jack if I don't uninstall the sound driver/reinstall.
Any possible fixes? It's getting pretty annoying.
I've tried looking everywhere.
