Hp envy 15 (j052nr) mSATA SSD question

I got the hp envy 15-j052nr . It came with a HDD only .  The manual clearly says envy 15 supports msata drives. So I bought an mSATA SSD. When I put the drive in the mSATA slot, the system doesn't boot. It boots fine if I have the HDD only.  I went to the bios to try to change the boot order but I didn't see entries for HDD and SSD.   Intel raid however lists the two drives in non-raid configuration.  Windows 8 OS. Any help is appreciated.

Hello djseeram,
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I understand the computer will not boot while the SSD is inserted. I will do what I can to assist you! First, I found a thread where numerous suggestions are proposed that could resolve the issue: System won't boot from SSD
If those do not work, I would suggest trying another SSD, just in case there is an issue with this one. I would also reference this product's maintenance and service guide to ensure you are doing everything correctly: HP ENVY 15 Notebook PC and HP ENVY TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide
I believe this information will help you out. Either way, please post your results. Thanks again for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Hp envy 15-j172np - msata ssd as primary boot

    Hello,
I just bought a new hp envy, i want to put a msata ssd drive and use as primary drive and install windows there.
i red that some people are having problems with selecting msata ssd as primary in similar models, and its not possible to set msata as primary in boot device priority.
Is it possible to do this in this model?  Or is it possible with a simple process?
And by the way, am i violating warranty by installing a msata ssd myself?
    thanks

    @3uric0 ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  You would have to check the bios to see if this was possible.
Check the advanced boot settings if they are listed.  Depending on the model of notebook some BIOS options are not available.
Check this link out it may be of help.

  • GT60 2OD-026US mSATA SSD question. Please help.

I'm getting the GT60 2OD-026US.  Currently, it has a 256GB Samsung PM841 mSATA SSD Drive in slot 1 with my OS installed on it. The other two slots are currently empty.   The second HD has a 750GB 7200RPM Serial-ATA II installed.
My question.  I would really like to install one more mSATA SSD in slot 2 for now, but also slot 3 down the road.  I asked the tech where I'm getting it if I could add an Intel 525 256GB in slot 2 and he told me no.  He said I needed the same brand and size mSATA installed in slot 2 and the same for slot 3 if I eventually wanted one there too. He wouldn't explain why this would be the case, he just told me that was the way it was. Is this true?  Can I only get fill up the other slots with the same brand and size mSATA SSDs?
If it is not true, what mSATA's seem to be the most compatible with the GT60 2OK-026US?  I would really like to expand my SSD options.
Any help, information and/or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

That's rubbish. You can use any msata SSD, it's just a drive. There is no reason for that.

The Service Manual is no help whatsoever. It says an M.2 mSSD is supported on "select models" but there is no picture of it in the Manual or indication where it is on the "Select Models". Those that do have it use an M.2 version (three connector prongs not 2) so your 840 Evo would not work even if you had one of the "Select Models". I believe on those that have it the M.2 port is right on the motherboard so if you do not see it there you are not among the select.

  • New Model: HP Envy 15t Upgrade HD to SSD or mSATA SSD?

    Hello Everyone,
I have been reading several threads on upgrading the HDD to SSD and it seems like everyone has been successful in doing so.  My question is, is there a benefit to upgrade the HDD to a SSD or to just add in mSATA SSD?  I currently have a networked drive that holds most of my data such as music, pictures, and videos so I do not believe I need more capacity on my hard drive.  With that being said, I planned on buying a 256/240GB SSD drive, it is just a matter of which one do I purchase? a regular SSD or mSATA SSD?  Thoughts?  Comments?  Concerns?
    Mike Lee
on a side note:  I have the new Envy 15t...I really wished they would have changed the model name to something completely different since the prefix is the same as their old model...stupid....

Get a regular 2.5 inch SATA SSD. Very slightly slower than an mSSD but still way faster than anything else. Trying to configure the mSSD as boot drive is a huge hassle.

    Hi,
I don't think there is any limit on that. I believe that anything up to 500GB will definitely work and most likely even drives up to a 1TB. Samsung is a very popular brand with Evo and Pro series drives. I'd go for one of them.

  • Type of HDD in Edge E130 and question about msata SSD

I'm interested in thickness of HDD in E130. I read that in E125 was 7 mm HDD and there is troubles with 9 mm. So, is  E130 similar to E125(E130 is next-gen of this type netbooks, but there is huge posibility that Lenovo Engineers decided not to change HDD type)? Or 9 mm hard drive will work?
Installing msata breaks warranty agreement, doesn't it? And i have some, maybe, obvious questions amout msata SSD(i've read about installing SSD in other Thinkpad notebooks), but I need some proves for Edge E130:
1)Speed is limited by SATAII interface?
2)mSata drive as bootable device will work?
Last questions are not such important, but i'll happy, if Edge E130/E135 users will share their experience
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I bought the E130 as a travel computer, so I didn't have to travel with my X220T - which is a tank compared to this little fellow. I have the 3358-8dg model of the e130 (came with free-dos but I bought an extra 4GB Ram to up the total to 8GB). The HDD is the usual 7mm think ones as expected.
I've had my e130 for 2 days now and I removed the HDD it shipped with and installed a 64GB mSata instead.

I then installed Win7 with SP1 from a USB in UEFI mode (see this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Discussion/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-or-8-i... - installed Lenovo System Update 5 and installed all drivers and software along with all windows updates.
So, running only an mSata HD and booting from it is not a problem at all.
My windows experience index is 4.9 due to the Graphics: Desktop performance for Windows Aero.
The HD transfer rate is 7.9.
The exact model of the mSata SSD I installed is: Crucial m4 SSD 64GB, mSATA 6Gb/s (CT064M4SSD3)
    I hope this helps.

  • X230: Questions regarding included 32GB msata SSD

    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
Hi... I've got a couple of questions regarding the X230 offered in Singapore, which comes with a msata ssd:
"Up to 5x Boost 32GB Micro Solid State Drive Outperforms 5400rpm Drive "
I AM assuming this is a msata ssd?
    http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/sgweb/LenovoPortal/en_SG/special-offers.workflowho...
    1) Given the limited size of this msata SSD (32GB), can I assume that only the operating system (Win 7) is installed here by default?
What about the folders under "My Documents", "My Pictures" and etc. Are they also installed into the SSD by default? I tend to leave all my work documents in that file, and it fills up pretty fast.
    2) I assume that the recovery partition is still located in the 320GB SATA HDD(7200rpm)?
    3) When I do a recovery from the Lenovo rescue/recovery programme (from the recovery partition), will Win 7 install correctly into the SSD, and not the HDD.
    4) If I do a factory recovery using the recovery DVDs (which I will create as soon as I receive the x230), will everything be installed correctly? Windows 7 to SSD and recovery partition to HDD?
    Thank you for your time!

the expressways software would make the 32 gigs mSATA a drive cache for the main HDD. Nothing is really installed on the mEATS, only files that are frequently used or predicted to be used frequently will be replicated on the mSATA.

    Yes, you can.

  • MSATA SSD in first generation Envy 14?

I just saw HP's dual drive mSATA SSD offer (albeit, for the second generation) and was wondering if it was also possible to setup a similar configuration in the first generation Envy 14.
I just checked my laptop and it does have an empty mSATA slot and thought it would be fantastic if I could install an SSD in there (and use it as the boot drive) rather than replacing the optical drive with a hard drive caddy.
    Any suggestions?

You will need to check with HP if possible. I have 1st generation HP envy 15 and it does not have this mSATA option. Not all mini pci-e slots are compatible with SSD drives. But if compatible, there are good drives such as Renice and Runcore SATA III mSATA drives for sale. See www.asiatechtrade.com

  • Trouble booting Windows 8 from mSATA SSD drive on HP Envy

I’m having an issue booting Windows 8 from my mSATA SSD drive (I believe that’s the correct terminology, it connects directly to the motherboard.)  I have a HDD that, it appears to me, it is trying to boot from.  The bios does not let me specifically select the boot drive, just disk.  I can boot from the SDD if I either remove the HDD or go through boot options and select to boot from an EFI file. A little background – I’ve had this running Windows from the SSD drive since I got it (installed that way) and using the HDD for storage.  My SSD drive had been removed and Windows installed on the HDD (since this is the HP forum I won't get into how this happened when I sent my laptop in for an unrelated repair.)  Seems I should be able to get it booting from the SSD again since it has not changed.  I’ve since removed the partitions and reformatted the drive.  I also tried setting up the EFI files on the HDD using BCDBOOT, maybe I didn’t need to/did it wrong/something else.  Seems this is not an uncommon issue but trying various things I’ve not yet been successful.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Ralph,
thanks a lot for the helpful information! But the problem still persists, and I don't know what's wrong about the installation. I again checked the case and device are fully compatible with Windows 8 on USB 3 and the current boot camp drivers are installed - so everything should work perfectly fine as Windows 8 does natively support booting from external USB-3-devices.
I personally still assume it's rather a driver related problem as the external SSD doesn't even show up whilst booting into the boot menu with "Alt" pressed - I can only choose to boot from the external SSD within the "start volume" menu in OSX (which then doesn't work out when rebooting, unfortunately). I mean, if there was a chance to boot from the external SSD with the configuration I got right now, but OSX/the iMac just "doesn't know" it shall boot from the external partition and therefore rather chooses the internal boot camp partition, the SSD would at least show up in the boot menu when pressing "Alt" on start-up, or do I go completely wrong? I even tried to rename the internal bootcamp partition (which did not work out) or disable it in order to prevent OSX/the iMac to boot from the internal bootcamp partition, but it didn't help: After rebooting it again chose the internal boot camp partition to start from.
Might the deletion of the internal partition be worth a try? Meaning is there a realistic chance that the issue might be caused by that? I would give it a try although I really don't wanna loose the internal boot camp partition for no good reason (btw: would it be possible to clone an image back from the external SSD to the internal HDD then?). Or do you maybe have any other idea what driver could miss resp. could be wrong about the installation so the boot process from the external SSD fails...?
Again MANY MANY THANKS in advance for your further assistance, everybody!!

  • G500 - Is it possible to install a mSATA SSD drive?

    Hi!
I am interested in the Lenovo G500 i7-3612QM and I would like to be able to install a mSATA SSD drive on it.
I have read that these drives can be installed on a PCI Express Mini Card slot, and according to the Hardware Maintenance Manual (p. 29) the computer has two of these slots:
      -Wimax/WIFI  x  1
      -SSD  x  1
The problem is that, although the Wi-Fi slot is easily visible (it appears in a picture in the manual, p. 45), I can't find the second slot, neither in the manual nor in the picture of the inside of the notebook I found in this web (The text is in hungarian, but I haven't been able to find any other picture).
Does anybody know if the second PCI Express slot really exists, please?
    Thank you very much!

  • Septre 15 xt ssd question

I've just purchased a Septre 15xt touchsmart. I ordered the 128 ssd drive because no larger was available but the salesman assured me I could upgrade later. In further research I've discovered that the standard sized ssd aren't being used. The machine instead uses a msata ssd. Why is the question. The machine is offered with a small ssd and a normal hard drive. Can a regular sized ssd be added to the machine where the hard drive would have sat?

    You're very welcome.
That I wouldn't know for sure.
I don't see why you couldn't have had a "normal" SSD in place of the mechanical hard drive.
The problem is a normal 9.5mm SSD won't physically fit in your notebook, and since you need to transfer the mounting hardware from the mechanical drive to the SSD, it's a no go.
So, if you were to get a 7.0mm SSD (if there is such a thing), I would say that it would probably work.
The problem is the operating system.
You need to have access to the exact version of the W8 installation media that came with your PC.
That is because with Microsoft Activation 3.0, the W8 product key is embedded in the BIOS, and when you use a DVD to install W8, that key automatically populates the installation, and there is no way anyone knows of to change it.
So, what some folks have wanted to do was to upgrade their PC's to W8 Pro, and they downloaded the upgrade for the special price of $39.99 only to find out that their "regular' (non-Pro) W8 key automatically is entered during the install and invalidates the install. And then they can't change the key like you can with XP, Vista or W7 when activation fails or the product key is invalid.
I imagine that if a customer wants to upgrade from the standard W8 to W8 Pro, they need to use the anytime upgrade method from within the operating system currently installed on their notebook.
