HP Envy 17t-100 quad

I just spent 60 minutes of my life online with tech support trying to get bluetooth to work on my brand spanking new laptop which by the way I upgraded with a faster processor, better display, larger hard drive and more ram.  The first tech told me after 35 minutes to google the problem.  I told him that is why I called him, I tried google for over an hour trying to solve/figure out what the problem was myself.  This included using HP support website.  I then asked to speak to his supervisor, 20 minutes later I was able to speak to Luie.  After taking my serial number and model number, which I had already given to the previous tech, he put me on hold.  When he came back he told me that my computer was not configured for bluetooth.  When I told him that I wanted to send it back I was put on hold again while he checked to see if there was one they could send me.  He came back and said they only had a 15" that could ship tomorrow.  I declined.  While I was on hold I did find where bluetooth is a $10 option.  Really?!  I pay extra for a souped up laptop and they leave this out?  I guess I'm behind the times, but when doesn't a computer have bluetooth capabiltites?!  I asked for the supervisor to have his supervisor call me in the morning. He said he would try,  I won't hold my breath.

Hi,
Many machines do not have BT even new one. Remember few years back, I had to add BT modul and it was only $7.80 at that time. Back to your machine, I don't know. But the following specs is the machine which I'm using now, it's only 5 days old and it does not have BT:

  • Hp Envy 17t-j100 Quad Edition Notebook PC Graphics Card Upgrade

I bought the Hp Envy 17t-j100 Quad Edition Notebook PC a while back and i was wondering if i could upgrade the graphics card on it. When you buy the laptop if gives you an option, you can either buy the Intel Deticated Graphics or the Nvidia Geforce GT 740 and i decided to buy the Nvidia GT 740 because i heard the integrated graphics were not that good for playing games. So i was wondering if i could somehow take out the NVidia Geforce GT 740 and replace with a better graphics card, Would that be possible?
    Thanks

Sorry; no dice. The video card is soldered to the motherboard. The point-of-sale options are for laptops with different motherboards. Buying a laptop is like buying a house: think about what you need now and in the future because they are not easy to change.

  • Would like to upgrade WLAN on HP Envy 17t-j100 Quad

Sorry if this is a repeat question.  Can I upgrade the wireless LAN card for this laptop to support 5Ghz standard?  Even though this is a b/g/n card, it wil not recognize the 5Ghz band from my Netgear AC1450...it's obviously not dual band.
it came with the Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter.  Great laptop so far but this issue is a bit disappointing.
if it is upradeable, what does HP offer that is compatible.
    HP Envy 17t-j100 Quad

    Hi:
Yes, the Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11bgn is only a single band (2.4 GHz) wireless N card.
It appears that HP has removed the BIOS whitelist on these newer models so you should be able to install any wireless card you want in that model.
Chapter 3 of the service manual lists the cards that HP supports with the part numbers.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091762.pdf
I would make sure your current card has 2 antenna leads attached to it.
I have heard on some models, (not necessarily yours) that on some of those low end cards, there is only 1 antenna in the PC.
That could be a problem (unless you don't mind tearing the whole notebook and display apart to add the additional antenna).

  • Installing driver for Envy 17t-j100 Quad Edition

    Hi all,
I wiped the hard drive of my envy, and moved a cloned Windows XP image onto it. On startup, I get a 0x7b (inaccessible boot device - blue screen) error.
I'm pretty sure it's a hard drive controller error - i've ruled out just about everything else. Trouble is, because I can't yet boot into windows, i can't install the driver.
The Windows XP image has IDE drivers installed, and the BIOS is (i think) stuck on a RAID configuration.
The driver I need: Intel Matrix Storage
It comes with a .inf file, and i've tried to install it (via a recovery environment) by:
    the provided .exe
    command line
    DPisnt
How can I get this to boot?
Flash a new BIOS that can switch to IDE mode to match the existing drivers?
Somehow install the new drivers? (I want to avoid manually setting registry keys if possible)
    Impossible?
    Thanks,
    Albert

  • HP Envy 17t-j000 Quad Edition.

    Hi all,
Recently purchased above system with 16GB RAM which left no option for installing an mSATA drive given the options.  I'm reasonably certain (according to other websites that talk about this laptop) that I can install an mSATA drive.  However, I also wanted to include a second HDD and found the hardware kit necessary to do it, popped the HDD enclosure cover open only to find that there's already something in (what appears to be) the mSATA slot.  The device in the slot has a sticker on it that would make one believe that it's a wireless network adapter.
My question is... is the mSATA slot in the same bay as the HDDs or is it somewhere else.  If it is in the same bay, what could be in the mSATA slot other than an mSATA drive?
Thanks in advance for your time and expertise!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I have the same basic model computer in my possession. The mini-pcie slot you see indeed has the wifi adapter. It is not for an mSATA drive. The mSATA port is not accessible through the service door. It is under the system board and the system board has to be removed to access it. The best advice if you want to enhance the speed is to do as suggested and install a 2.5 inch SATA SSD in the main bay and put the original mechanical drive in the second bay. If you are determined to get at the mSATA slot, here is the Service Manual:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03922401.pdf
This Manual does not even show the mSATA port but it is under the motherboard.

  • Lost bluetooth when my HP Envy 17t-j000 Quad was repaired

When my PC arrived in July it had a "Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230" card which supports Bluetooth 4.0.  Unfortunately, it's WiFi didn't work so I sent the PC in for repair but when it came back a "Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter" had been installed.  Now I've tried to use bluetooth for the first time and find the Atheros does not support bluetooth!  How do I get bluetooth?

  • Very poor wireless reception on HP Envy 17t-j000

So I just recently got a  HP Envy 17t-j000 quad edition (Windows 8), which seems to be having some wifi issues
I opted for the cheaper non-bluetooth adapter, the Realtek RTL8188EE, which at present seems to have almost zero documentation on the internet. The Realtek website doesn't even show any record of it!
Anyways, here's the problem: I'm getting very poor reception with it, to the point where one of my two wireless routers has only very intermittent and horrendously slow connectivity, and the other will work a room away but no further (and also sometimes drops too, but less frequently). Outside of this range, I can still see these networks, but cannot always connect. If I do manage to connect, it will show a strong signal (4-5 out of 5 bars) but will never actually load anything. In fact, though I'm not sure this is relevant or not, I have never seen any networks with less than 3 out of 5 bars for signal strength.
Meanwhile, a number of other devices work at a much larger range and without dropping the connection as this computer does. This includes a year old HP (I forget the model) and a five year old Acer. The speed on my faster router doesn't appear to be very different between the HP Envy and the other two.
    I have:
    * Done a number of restarts of the network modem and both wireless routers
    * Verified that the driver on the wireless adapter is up to date and reinstalled it
    * Checked to make sure there are  no antivirus/firewall/other programs systems that could be interfering
So, does this sound like a just a crappy wireless adapter or could this be some sort of software issue or defective hardware? Also, if I were to just replace this with another wireless card, what sort of things do I need to be concerned with in order to make sure the replacement is compatible with the system?

    OK Boys & Girls - - here's what I did - -
First - the Envy X2 is having similar problems - but my laptop is the 17t-j000 quad
so this IS the correct thread - -
I used the HP support assistant - - it installed an updated BIOS -
The WiFi still shuts down at 8 - 10 min watching Netflix (no mouse or user inputs - Max signal strength indicated)
    {Yes - I have disabled allowing the machine to turn off power to the WiFi card in the driver section}
Loaded the Softpaq mentioned above (quoted below) - - 200MB - had to be SOMETHING in there ??
It loaded without a problem - - strange thing is - the Intel Driver date stayed the same: 9/17/2012
Tried the WiFi - - still shuts down at 8 - 10 min
Went back to HP Support Assistant - -
    NOW it says - - I need a new WiFi package ?!?
    So - I download and installed THAT - -
Back to Netflix - - and so far - has been NO SHUTDOWN ?!?
2 episodes watched - still connected - fingers crossed
Your mileage may vary - -
    Hi,

I believe that model features a ClickPad, which doesn't have distinct left/right-click buttons but does have left/right-click areas where the buttons would normally be. See Using and Configuring the ClickPad for more info.

FIFA 15 minimum video card is a GeForce 650 GTX. You have a 740M
    Let's look at the comparison:
    http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-650-vs-GeForce-GT-740M
It is close but the 650 GTX is maybe 15-20% faster. So you are trying to play the game with a video card 15-20% less powerful than the MINIMUM requirement. Therefore you get 15 fps. 20 fps would be minimum. To get 30 fps you would need the recommended card which is a GTX 460. Compared here:
    http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-460-v2-vs-GeForce-GT-740M
The gap is even greater. So you are getting about all you are going to get out of a 740M video card. If you want to game better you need a better computer.

    3.  Possibility of installing an additional SSD (one to boot), and HDD for a performance/storage configuration (not mSSD).
-Use of drive caddy or something a long these lines e.g. where mSata, or DVD drives can both be swapped for a drive caddy.
    Thanks.

The CPU is not soldered in place but you are going to find that there is not a lot of improvement possible. That is a 4th gen i7 processor and even if you could get one a tick or 2 faster the price would be astronomical not to mention you would void the warranty. Not worth it.
No GPU upgrade is possible. The video is on a chip soldered to the board.
Yes, the laptop has a second hard drive bay and you can get an SSD (regular full sized) to put in the first bay to use as a boot drive. This will speed it up tremendously such that you will not want to upgrade the CPU any more.

    Hello All,
My next laptop will most likly be the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition with Windows 8 Professional. However I have several questions before I purchase this machine. I hope the knowledge base here can help.
    1) Is it possible to reconfigure the laptop to use the mSATA SSD hard drive acceleration cache as the primary boot drive?
    2) The ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition can be optioned with a 24GB mSATA SSD. What is the maximum memory capacity this laptop will recognize? ie, 64Gb, 128Gb, 256GB....
    3) When customizing the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition through HP's Customize and Buy, why am I limited to 8Gb of memory when selecting 24Gb mSATA Acceleration Cache?
    4) Is there a limit to the memory capacity of HHDs and SSDs the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition is capable of recognizing?
    5) The ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition comes with two drive bays. What are the physical limits for hard drives in the bays? Specifically, will 15mm 2.5" HDDs fit?
    6) If I purchase the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition with an empty 2nd HDD bay, will I need to purchase additional adaptors and/or cables in the future to attach a second HDD?
I do apologize for so many questions however if I'm going to pay more than $1200 for a laptop I need to ask a few. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.
For those interested this possible future buy is replacing an 8 year old HP Pavilion ZV-6130us Windows XP Pro SP3 with 2Gb RAM, a 256Gb primary HDD and a 2nd 1Tb HDD in the optical drive bay. The only failures in 8 years was one cooling fan 2-3 years ago and the optical drive 4 years ago. This HP has been good to me.
