HP Envy 17t-j100 phantom touches on touchscreen

My touch screen will periodically go crazy with phantom touches at the rate of at least 5 per second. These are at various spots on the screen, but consistently in those same places. They happen so fast it is impossible to move the cursor anywhere else to even do a controlled reboot, let alone disable the touch screen. The only solution is a forced power-off to reboot, which is not all the good for any computer.
I notice that this most often happens when the lid has been closed for some period of time. When re-opening is when the screen goes crazy. However, it does not happen every time the lid is closed.
Is there any key sequence that can temporaily disable the touchscreen to at least allow for an orderly reboot?
I know I have seen this same problem reported elsewhere on the web for HP Envy touchscreens. Does HP have a solution for this yet? Given the nature of when it happens, this sounds like a software (perhaps interrupt handler) problem rather than a problem with the touchscreen itself. If not, how about implementing a key sequence to temporarily turn off the touch screen.

Hi again mencik,
Thank you for the quick reply!
To determine whether or not the issue with your notebook's screen has to do with the hardware or software, I recommend performing a backup and recovery of the operating system. This can be done by following this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8).
If the issue persists, please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

  • Hp Envy 17t-j100 Quad Edition Notebook PC Graphics Card Upgrade

I bought the Hp Envy 17t-j100 Quad Edition Notebook PC a while back and i was wondering if i could upgrade the graphics card on it. When you buy the laptop if gives you an option, you can either buy the Intel Deticated Graphics or the Nvidia Geforce GT 740 and i decided to buy the Nvidia GT 740 because i heard the integrated graphics were not that good for playing games. So i was wondering if i could somehow take out the NVidia Geforce GT 740 and replace with a better graphics card, Would that be possible?
    Thanks

Sorry; no dice. The video card is soldered to the motherboard. The point-of-sale options are for laptops with different motherboards. Buying a laptop is like buying a house: think about what you need now and in the future because they are not easy to change.

  • HP ENVY 17T - J100 I NED TO REPLACE THE MAIN HDD TO SSD

I was just wanting to confirm that with the HP ENVY 17T J100 model can upgrade it's HDD to SSD? This model has the 1TB HDD. If I simply clone the HDD to an SSD of the same size.  will it work? Or is there more complex setup to get the raid working between SSD/SSD rather than SSD/HDD?
also i try with 120 ssd and it didnt work. if i change the main 1 TB HDD to 1 tb SSd can i use the recovery disks to return all the windows as factory with the SSD or not and why if not
    Thanks for your time!

    Hi @sherifmadkour
I understand you are looking at replacing your HDDs in your notebook with SSDs. I can help you with your question.
Please see the following for your notebook family which shows the supported components.
HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 Notebook PC HP ENVY TouchSmart 17 Notebook PC Maintenan...
You can find the drive list in the product description section,  and also under the Hard Drive list, in Component replacement procedures.
Anything outside of that list would not have been tested with the other hardware, and so is unexplored territory. It is one of those things where if a device has different current requirements, it can put strain on the other hardware or an issue of driver compatibility.

  • Would like to upgrade WLAN on HP Envy 17t-j100 Quad

Sorry if this is a repeat question.  Can I upgrade the wireless LAN card for this laptop to support 5Ghz standard?  Even though this is a b/g/n card, it wil not recognize the 5Ghz band from my Netgear AC1450...it's obviously not dual band.
it came with the Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter.  Great laptop so far but this issue is a bit disappointing.
if it is upradeable, what does HP offer that is compatible.
    HP Envy 17t-j100 Quad

    Hi:
Yes, the Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11bgn is only a single band (2.4 GHz) wireless N card.
It appears that HP has removed the BIOS whitelist on these newer models so you should be able to install any wireless card you want in that model.
Chapter 3 of the service manual lists the cards that HP supports with the part numbers.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04091762.pdf
I would make sure your current card has 2 antenna leads attached to it.
I have heard on some models, (not necessarily yours) that on some of those low end cards, there is only 1 antenna in the PC.
That could be a problem (unless you don't mind tearing the whole notebook and display apart to add the additional antenna).

  • HP Envy 17t-j100 Distance between USB Slots suggestion

I intended this post as a recommandation for HP.
I have an HP Envy Touchsmart 17t-j100 and everything is excelent up until now.
The only thing that is very annoying is the distance between USB ports. PLEASE increase the distance between USB ports for the future models. I have a lot of problems tryng to connect everything I need.
Even if I try to open the DVD drive, it will stuck in my USB device. I mean how much difficult is to put a distance of 1 cm between them?
If the USB cables are the standard size, there are no problems but most of the USB devices nowadays are much more wider than a standard USB cable and I keep having problems.
I mean it's a 17" laptop, there is plenty of space on the sides. In the end, it's better to drop the DVD drive and put a VGA slot instead, but with bigger distance between USB ports.
I am planning to buy another ENVY in the future but I really want my new laptop to have USB ports with a wider distance bewtween them.
Thank you very much and I hope HP will take care of this little problem on the future models.
    Have a nice day.

  • HP ENVY 17t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook

will never again buy a HP computer!   I wanted something reliable .Ever since day one I have had problems with this computer. I sent the computer back and took 2 -3 weeks for them them to return it.  It was only a week after I got it back it broke down again. No power to turn it on now. I HAD CALLED SEVERAL TIMES ever since I got this computer . The recovery disk that I got does not work with this computer and you must have sent me the wrong media recovery disk cause it will not take the disk . Awesome job HP. Ya'll send me yet another laptop back the don’t work. I have never been so disappointed in an item before ever! I'm NOT a hard person to please and deal with most issues quietly, however!!! This computer is the worst large item I have ever spent money on and i have regretted it day one since I got it. The hard drive just going! Really???? Mind you, I surf the net, play a few games, shop and pay my bills.  Well seems this computer cant handle that.  So I send it out to be repaired (2 weeks without a computer) and the hard drive is fixed. My computer OVERHEATS on a regular basis. Restarts by it self. Smells like something burning .blue screens and black screens. The display will flicker. Now we come to wear it will not power on. This is a lemon of a computer and I don’t trust this computer . I want a new computer and a different model . I have lost my information twice on this computer .I use it as a work computer. I started to back up my info everyday now since I don’t trust this computer. Thank god I did. It game me a black screen .try to load windows . wouldn’t take the media disk then it started to make a smell and no power. They want to "repair" this crap of a computer again. I am so freaking fed up. I have lost so muchn money because I work from home, and they don't care. I refuse to keep the same model. I hate it, if it didn't work the first time i touched it, why would i want the same one??? HP used to be a great product, trusted, and stable. Here it is the 11th of aug and still not repaired again.

  • Installing driver for Envy 17t-j100 Quad Edition

    Hi all,
I wiped the hard drive of my envy, and moved a cloned Windows XP image onto it. On startup, I get a 0x7b (inaccessible boot device - blue screen) error.
I'm pretty sure it's a hard drive controller error - i've ruled out just about everything else. Trouble is, because I can't yet boot into windows, i can't install the driver.
The Windows XP image has IDE drivers installed, and the BIOS is (i think) stuck on a RAID configuration.
The driver I need: Intel Matrix Storage
It comes with a .inf file, and i've tried to install it (via a recovery environment) by:
    the provided .exe
    command line
    DPisnt
How can I get this to boot?
Flash a new BIOS that can switch to IDE mode to match the existing drivers?
Somehow install the new drivers? (I want to avoid manually setting registry keys if possible)
    Impossible?
    Thanks,
    Albert

  • 2nd drive in Hp Envy 17t J100 Laptop not detected

I first upgraded the hard drive that came with the laptop with a 500GB SSD. This went smoothly and the laptop runs without issue with the single SSD drive. I then decided to purchase the additional caddy and put the original provided hard drive back in the laptop in the secondary bay. Right now when I boot up the laptop, the secondary drive is not detected. I checked that the connector is connected properly from the HDD to the laptop. Any suggestions or help is appreciated.

Did you buy from newmodeus.com? Every now and then you get a bad cable. Also be sure the little zif connector is in there straight and deep. It is not a great design in my opinion and has to be connected just right. If it is not working after that, contact newmode and see if you can get a replacement.

  • HP Envy 17t-100 quad

I just spent 60 minutes of my life online with tech support trying to get bluetooth to work on my brand spanking new laptop which by the way I upgraded with a faster processor, better display, larger hard drive and more ram.  The first tech told me after 35 minutes to google the problem.  I told him that is why I called him, I tried google for over an hour trying to solve/figure out what the problem was myself.  This included using HP support website.  I then asked to speak to his supervisor, 20 minutes later I was able to speak to Luie.  After taking my serial number and model number, which I had already given to the previous tech, he put me on hold.  When he came back he told me that my computer was not configured for bluetooth.  When I told him that I wanted to send it back I was put on hold again while he checked to see if there was one they could send me.  He came back and said they only had a 15" that could ship tomorrow.  I declined.  While I was on hold I did find where bluetooth is a $10 option.  Really?!  I pay extra for a souped up laptop and they leave this out?  I guess I'm behind the times, but when doesn't a computer have bluetooth capabiltites?!  I asked for the supervisor to have his supervisor call me in the morning. He said he would try,  I won't hold my breath.

    Hi,
Many machines do not have BT even new one. Remember few years back, I had to add BT modul and it was only $7.80 at that time. Back to your machine, I don't know. But the following specs is the machine which I'm using now, it's only 5 days old and it does not have BT:

    2.  Is GPU upgradeable with aftermarket GPU?  This one is 470M
    3.  Possibility of installing an additional SSD (one to boot), and HDD for a performance/storage configuration (not mSSD).
-Use of drive caddy or something a long these lines e.g. where mSata, or DVD drives can both be swapped for a drive caddy.
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The CPU is not soldered in place but you are going to find that there is not a lot of improvement possible. That is a 4th gen i7 processor and even if you could get one a tick or 2 faster the price would be astronomical not to mention you would void the warranty. Not worth it.
No GPU upgrade is possible. The video is on a chip soldered to the board.
Yes, the laptop has a second hard drive bay and you can get an SSD (regular full sized) to put in the first bay to use as a boot drive. This will speed it up tremendously such that you will not want to upgrade the CPU any more.
Here is the caddy you need:

  • Num lock 17T-J100

I have a new HP ENVY TouchSmart 17T-J100.
I do not see a num lock on or off indicator light.
Prior computer keyboards have had such an indicator light.
Is there one, or are we to figure out if num lock feature is on or off by trial and error?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi goodhayman,
I understand that the light for the num lock key is not turning on when you press the key. Here are some instructions for Turning on or off the Numb Lock, CapLoc or ScroolLoc on startup.
    1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor.
    2. Now go to following key:
To change the behavior for currently logged in user:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard
To change the behavior for all users:
    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
    3. Now in right-side pane, change value of "InitialKeyboardIndicators" string value to any of following:
0 - Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
    1 - Turn CapsLock On
    2 - Turn NumLock On
3 - Turn CapsLock and NumLock On
    4 - Turn ScrollLock On
5 - Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On
6 - Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On
7 - Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
    4. Exit registry editor and restart your system to take effect.
I hope this information resolves your issue, please let me know how it goes.
Take care and have a nice day!
