HP Envy 27 TouchSmart All in One black Screen w/ Cursor

I did a system restore on my computer and when it restarted I got a black screen with a cursor only. HP tech support ran multiple tests and determined it is a virus but after 12 hours of remote access working on it it still has the same problem! I have to jump through hoops to get it to run in safe mode! Can anyone help!?

    Hello @junk4are,
I understand that you are having issues with your HP Pavilion 23 Touchsmart Desktop PC's touchscreen and are wondering if you should install your drivers. I would certainly recommend that you do so. I would be happy to assist you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer as there are various versions of the HP Pavilion 23. I am linking an HP Support document below that will show you how to find your product number. As well, if you could indicate which operating system you are using. And whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit as with this and the product number I can provide you with accurate information.

  • Black Screen with Cursor (Tried most solutions)

To save your time and mine, I’ve tried all options in “press f8” and “recovery disk”. Over the past 3 days, I read almost all threads, videos, articles, and official MS help containing any mention of this problem. I also applied many commands, created few
“SystemRescue CDs” and “Kaspersky Rescue 10” on a usb drive. I follow instructions very well, and have never been stumped by a windows problem like this before. If someone solves this, you are a wizard!
Nothing has worked so far, but I really want to figure this out and not ‘reinstall’. It appears to be a simple and popular problem: “Right after Win 7 boot Logo, I get black screen with white mouse cursor,
no matter if I boot in safe mode, last good configuration, or normal startup”, but all the solutions that worked for most people are not working for me.
TL;DR: (answers to any of the 7 questions in the end will help me out)
Custom System: Win 7 64 bit (updated consistently), 4gb ram, Quad Core 2.66, 64GB SSD (Crucial M4) and 4 hard other drives. Only windows installations/updates have been installed onto the SSD, no other programs. Only 1 OS has ever been installed
on this computer. Never dual booted.
Mobo: Asus Maximus Formula. GPU: AMD HD7870LE
    2014-04-19
I haven’t installed or downloaded any programs in the past 3 weeks, and did not notice anything unusual up until this incident.
In the morning the computer went into hibernation because I was away, it couldn’t wake up (usually happens), so I turned off the power supply. Turned it back on, and computer resumed, I was concerned as it may have run out of hard drive space on my 64GB
SSD (4GB free), but it booted fine.
Later during the day, I decided to restart the computer, and as it booted up again, it went into “start up repair”. I let it run and restart, and it arrived at the dreaded Black screen with mouse cursor, of death, right before logon screen.
Symptoms while on this black screen.
Ctrl alt del doesn’t work, power off doesn’t work, cursor can move, pressing ‘shift’ many times doesn’t bring up the ‘sticky key’. No task manager.
Hard drive is not loading anything, just idle.
Computer falls asleep after 15 minutes or so, and can wake up back to this black screen, so it remembers my power settings
Safe mode loads the drivers fine, but also gets stuck on the same ‘black screen with cursor’ forever
I tried every option in the ‘advanced boot’, including ‘safe with command prompt, safe with networking, last known configuration, etc’
Last known configuration, and all of the above, all boots to ‘black screen with cursor’, this means windows believed it booted fine the last time, so it remembered this configuration. That’s because all the drivers loaded without issue. While loading
Safe Mode, I can see windows loading all the drivers ok.
No restore or backups (I know, I do not deserve to live, lesson learned)
I tried all applicable functions from the ‘recovery cd command prompt’, bcdedit, bootrec, diskpart, and still couldn’t get it to boot.
Commands applied in Elevated Command Prompt from Installation DVD: (very careful with backups and overwriting)
Diskpart -> list volume, tells me that 100mb is system reserved, the other 59GB has no label, and is a different partition
Bootrec -> scanos, tells me that I have 0 windows installations, used fixboot, /fixmbr, /rebuildmbr, all successful. Mounting the drive later on RescueDisk’s TestDisk shows no problems with either partition.
BCDedit: shows both boot manager and winloader to be on the same drive, and I referenced it with a typical BCDedit enum output, and nothing is out of place.
I went into Regedit by typing “regedit” in command prompt in Win7 recovery cd, and confimed that ‘Shell=explorer.exe’ under:
    HKEY_local machine/software/microsoft/WindowsNT/Currentversion/winlogon.
Sfc /scannow couldn’t run due to “Pending repairs/restart”
    So I used: SFC.EXE /scannow /offbootdir=c:\  /offwindir=c:\windows
Which ran and repaired some errors the first time. I ran it more just to make sure, with restarts in between, it gave me
Win resource protection did not find any integrity violations.
So the system files appears to be fine and not corrupted.
Bootrec /scanos does not detect any windows installations. “0 Windows installations identified”, yet “Diskpart -> Detail Disk” and bcdedit both detects the windows directory.
    From windows recovery disk:
    Startup Repair diagnosis: (Show Details)
    All tests completed successfully
Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully
It seems that the system and the OS boots successfully, and windows believes it boots successfully (that’s why last know good configuration gives me the black screen also, and Win Startup Diagnosis all says it booted successfully”
It’s the second before it enters into the logon screen, the black screen and movable cursor appears, and hangs here forever. What programs load during this step, and how can I find out this info? Is there a diagnosis tool that allows me to see the programs
as they load during windows start up?
    Other attempts:
Then I read it could be windows using “winresume.exe” instead of winloader.exe, since I have “hiberfil.sys” in C:\windows, so I backed it up and deleted it using SystemRescue.
Another thread said “winevt” bad logs, in C:\windows\system32\winevt were causing this black screen, so I backed it up and deleted that also, and it still won’t boot.
I plugged in the devices that were attached (just 1 ext hard drive, through a 10 port usb hub) that was connected while it went into hibernation on April 19th, and it didn’t help.
The files on that disk and the file system is not corrupt; I tested it by taking it out and docking it on a usb Blax Duet, and my laptop did a scan disc, and it’s fine. The Sfc Scan also shows that it is ok.
I also unplugged all the other sata drives, switched the SSD sata cable around to other sata ports to no prevail.
    So far I know:
Very unlikely that it’s a virus problem, I haven’t installed or downloaded anything this month, scans from Kaspersky 10 rescue disk shows nothing, Farbar scan shows nothing. I also never install anything suspicious, like toolbars or junk. I scan regularily.
Not a driver problem, since I haven’t changed or updated anything. I unplugged all devices, and starting in 640x480 mode also gives the black screen with cursor. Drivers all loaded fine while starting windows and safe mode
Boot files are intact, windows system files are in the right place since windows actually boots into a shell? Both bootloader and boot manager show up in bcdedit enum scans
Not due to system file corruption, since file integrity are confirmed ok by above CMD commands, and windows diagnostic tool, and testdisk.
    My questions:
What could be the cause of this? I didn’t make any changes to BIOS, windows settings, perform any updates, suspicious activities, installations, or crashes, before this. The files on that disk and the file system are not corrupt either, I tested it by
taking it out and docking it on a usb Blax Duet, and my laptop did a scan disc, and it’s fine.
Which program (classpnp.sys? explorer.exe? winlogon.exe?) is being loaded right before “windows logon screen” that would cause it to hang with a black background and cursor?
How can I find out this information? Is there a tool that can record all programs that are being loaded by windows at boot?
I only have access to regedit, elevated command prompt, and I can change files through SystemRescue or Kaspersky recue, how can I get the computer to boot past that black screen with a mouse cursor? The answer seems so close.
From the Rescue Disks, what could I really do to get past the black screen?
Those who are computer technicians could tell me: If I take it to a computer shop or technician, what could they do in a situation like this aside from all of the above? Do they have some ‘next level’ access tools or are they just going to waste my time
and tell me I have to reinstall?
At the very worst, I will obviously reintall. On my 64gb SSD, I didn’t install any important softwares. All my important software installations are on a separate drive. However, will they still work if I did a ‘Inplace Upgrade’ install of windows? Does
    registry get wiped?

    Hi,
Have you tried to take startup repair when booting with the rescue disk?
    Startup Repair
And we'd better bring the PC to the vendors, then take an examination of the hardware health.
How does the Bootrec /scanos show 0 installation identified? We may take a try with chkdsk from command line to check if there are any disk errors:

  • Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade issue (from Windows 8 Pro) on Envy 23 TouchSmart All-In-One...

    Hello,
I have an HP Envy 23 Touchsmart All-In-One that I purchased a year ago (around 12/2012). It came preinstalled with Windows 8.
    System Information:
    a) Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770S CPU @ 3.10 GHz
    b) 8192 MB of RAM
A few weeks after I had bought the system, I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro with Media Center that I purchased through Microsoft's upgrade program.
Last week (10/19/2013), I saw the upgrade option to Windows 8.1 in the store and decided to upgrade.
After a few minutes, I got a prompt asking me to restart the computer and I did.
However, I noticed that the screen went blank, but it really didn't restart - I saw that the hard disk light was still blinking and I waited for around 15 minutes. I know it didn't restart because if it did I would have seen the HP logo on the BIOS screen. A little later, the system went into sleep mode (at least, the power button light was blinking slowly as if it was on sleep). Since it was late at night, I decided to leave the system alone and decided to check on it next morning. Next morning, it was still in sleep mode (as I feared) - when I tried to wake it up from sleep by moving the mouse/hitting the return key, it made the exact sounds as if it was waking up from sleep (as it always does), but the screen was still blank. The power button slight was glowing steadily indicating that it is awake now.
At this point, I decided to power down the system by holding the power button for a few seconds. Upon reboot, I saw the HP logo on the BIOS bootup screen and then the screen went blank and nothing came up.
So I decided to do a system recovery using my Windows 8 recovery CD and powered down the system with the CD in its slot. This time, the system came up and immediately started restoring my OS to a previous version.
Upon logging in to the recovered system, I got the following message:
    "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
    0xC1900101 - 0x40019".
I tried reinstalling Windows 8.1 a couple of times after this. Once by disabling all the non-Microsoft services and disabling all the startup programs. Still the same result.
I don't have any antivirus software on my system other the default Microsoft system protection software.
    Any help, much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • HP Envy 4500 all in one wont scan or copy

Hi all. I have a 4 month old Envy 4500 all in one printer & it has stopped scanning &/or copying.
It wil print from any of the laptops on the network but will not scan a document or copy either from the desktop icon or directly from the panel on the printer.
I've tried everything, uninstalling & re installing from CD rom, I've run the Scan & copy driver doctor & that says there's a problem with the driver, tells me to unplug the pirnter & restart computer, done all that & still nothing.
When you try to scan the printer draws the paper in & then the screen just sits for hours with the progress bar on "scanning" or "copying" & nothing happens. If you cancel the job (on pc or printer panel) even the "cancelling" sticks on the screen for hours, the only way to clear it is to shut down printer & restart, but still it doesnt fix it.
I think there's a fault with the arm thing that moves across the screen & copies/scans the document on the glass.
Its under warranty but I've tried everything for 3-4 days now & getting nowhere
    Someone please help
BTW. My wife laptop was on windows 8.1 & I was on Windows Vista but I have just changed to new laptop in last 24hrs with also Windows 8.1 but the problem started well before I changed my laptop from Vista AND exactly the same symptoms happen from my wifes pc with Windows 8.1.

Ok thanks for all of this. I tried it all & still no joy.
I do think (as I have all along that it is a hardware fault)
I will speak to Amazon as I cannot afford to be without a printer whilst it goes off for repair
UPDATE: Amazon customer service is UNBELIEVABLE!! They're just sending a new printer out & once I get it I just need to send old one back. Love Amazon!

  • How to connect a second monitor/TV to HP ENVY Beats All-In-One

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is even possible to connect a second monitor to the HP ENVY Beats All-In-One Desktop PC, because I'm trying to connect my TV as the second monitor through HDMI and I've tried everything that I could, but have come up empty handed?

    Hi,
What is the model/product of your AIO machine ? I many cases, you can't use HDMI port to connect to a TV because it is HDMI IN port. You need USB - HDMI converter/adapter to connect to a TV (or monitor).

  • Trying to network HP Envy 4500 all in one with OSX 10.9.4

First time installation of HP Envy 4500 all in one was going well on Mac with OSX 10.9.4.  However I can only get the printer to work with cable. HP instructions were to re-insert CD and follow instructions for 'reconfiguring without cable' however this was not an option on the CD, it just tried to repeat the installation.
Configuring Device through my Mac came up wit this message- "Device not reachable. the woreless network settings were successfully downloaded to your device.  However your mac was unable to locate the device on the network."
There is no point me having the wireless option if it needs to have a cable connection.  Please can  anyone help me with this last stage to get set up.  Many thanks.

Hello @Allgoodthyngs , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are running into connectivity issues.  I would like to help.
I would recommend you perform a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would then suggest this document on Wireless printing center Troubleshooting Issues.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • HP ENVY 114 all-in-one d411c and wireless printing.

I have a HP ENVY 114 all-in-one d411c printer connected wirelessly and a HP Pavilion HPE h8-1237 which is also connected wirelessly to my NetGear N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router.  The problem is that the printer, according to the desktop computer, is constantly going OFFLINE.  I have tried reinstalling printer software, ran the Print and Scan Doctor, etc. with no luck.  I think the problem is with the desktop computer because I also have a HP Pavilion dv7 notebook which is also connected wirelessly and it can print all day long with no problems, never goes OFFLINE.  I don't know what else to do.  I recently upgraded both computers to Windows 8 Pro.  The printer worked fine when I was using Windows 7 Ultimate.  I need some suggestions, Please.  Thank You in advance.

Sounds like you are having issues with your printer going offline? Now is this actually inhibiting your printing? Because if the printer is in sleep mode it will register as offline. If you ARE having issues with printing, then we can check some of the setting on the router. Here are its specs :
    http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netgear-n750-wireless-dual/4507-3319_7-34467825.html
Here I can see that there are potential hazards, I would recommend contacting Netgear and making sure that the router is broadcasting on the 2.4GHz range, and that it is set for 802.11g and not 802.11n wireless. These could effect your printer's responsiveness.
    Run this diagnostic tool :
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c03286146
And as a last bit, you might want to consider setting the printer up with an Ethernet-network connection and seeing if the issue is with the method of communication.
Let me know and I will get right back with you!

  • Envy 23 all in one Win 8.1 bluetooth doesn't receive photo from phone

Trying to upload a jpg file from my phone to my windows 8.1 Envy 23 All in One via bluetooth.  The PC and phone pair up ok and phone shows it is sending.  When the phone starts sending, the PC's bluetooth device status changes from not connected to connected.  After about a minute, the phone says the transfer failed and the PC status goes back to not connected.   The phones error message says request could not be handled correctly.  Also, the bluetooth icon window doesn't ever include selections to receive file or send file.  HP Support connected remotely, reinstalled the bluetooth driver, deleted the device, paired up again, but no change with the transfer.  HP concluded it is a hardware problem and says to send the PC in for repair. (Still under warranty.)  Doesn't sound like hardware to me, and I don't want to be without my PC and possibly have to reinstall all programs and data when it returned. Thinking of getting a cable to connect directly to the PC.  Any ideas what might be wrong?

    Hi,
Open up Bluetooth settings ---> Share and make sure that box to Allow remote devices to browse, send and receive pictures, music and other files is checked. The click on Open Bluetooth Exchange Folder -->right mouse click for properties, Share and the review your exchange settings.
Check the Permissions on the above image so that your know for sure what you are allowing for transfer types etc..
It is possible that the WIFI adapter is failing during a transfer process if the software is properly setup.
Be patient and Bluetooth transfers can be slow.
You should get a notification on the PC that the file was successfully received.  Additionally, your phone should be indicating an up transfer.

Is there a way to download software so that my MAC OS X 10.6.8 and work with my new HP ENVY 7645 all-in-one printer?
If so, please tell me how to do that?  Thanks!

    Hi,
    I afraid not.
The printer is only supported on 10.7 or newer OS versions, as listed within the System Requirements below:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04353671/
If your Mac support Yosemite you may upgrade your operating system to 10.10 for free:

The other option os to replace the printer with another model which is compatible with your operating system.

Hello:  My HP Touchsmart All-In-One Desktop PC will not power up.  I have bought three different power adapters.  The lights on the AC adapter and the back of the PC have come on with each of the adapters.  The first two were 90W and I realized that I need 120W so the third I purchased is a Lenmar Universal 120 Watt (15V to 24V) power adapter. Once again, the lights come on but when I press the Power Button on my PC, the light on the Power Button flashes Three Times and does nothing else.  Do I have to match Watts, Volts AND Amps or is Watts and Volts sufficient?

Ever thing is pointing to Bios error it is not a simple fast fix. It might require replacing hard drive or doing a factory restore using recovery disc only by changing the boot up from Name of your hard drive to CD/ DV Optical drive. Thats if you can get into Bios section to change the boot up order.  Some computers use tapping f-2 key or Esc key and f-10 key as you start up the computer.  Let's hope it's not in the motherboard.  Tapping f-8 key is your safe mode.
Lets hope start up trouble shooting page has a fix for it.
    frrw.

  • Installing Win 7 via Bootcamp on 27' iMac 2010 gives BLACK screen, BLINKING cursor error (BSBCE)?

    Hi All,
All coments appreciated regarding thiis issue.
    I have a 2010 27' i7 2.93Ghz iMac with 8Gb ram, 2Tb Seagate, and 256 Samsung SSD.
I am running 10.6.8 with all updates on the 2Tb Seagate (has BC 3.04), and 10.7.1 on the Samsung (has BC 4.0).
I have tried over a dozen times to install Win 7 (both a 32 bit Professional edition and a 64 bit Ultimate edition) on BC partitions on both drives. These have been all on separate occasions of course.
All installs result in what appears to be a successful install, but when the machine reboots to launch Win 7 for the first time, I ALWAYS get a black screen with a blinking cursor error (BSBCE).
This is not the 2009 video card driver issue problem reported so widely and referred to in the Apple article TS3173. I had that model previously and the way around that was to connect a second monitor/LCD for the installation.
No this is a new and separate issue.
And I am no nubie. I have used IT for over 25 years and teach networking courses in the Win and Mac environments.
The problem appears to be in a corrupt boot loader install.
I have used both WIn 7 install disks to do a repair each time. The repair says it is successful but after rebooting all I get is the black screen and flashing cursor, with no keyboard response. I have used both Bluetooth keyboards and USB keyboards. Nothing seems to make a difference re getting WIn 7 to boot after the install on either drive.
I have also used the Bootrec commands in the command window. They all return a successful outcome but when rebooting I see the ever familar BSBCE.
Now,,,,,here is the real puzzle. I copied my previous Win 7 Ultimate install using Winclone before I sold my older 27' iMac.
If I restore that install to the 2010 iMac Win 7 boots fine!
So some error is happening on my current machine when the bootloader/bootmanager is being written to the BC partition.
The problem is there with the BC on both 10.6 and 10.7, and these are different versions of BC!
Now to further complicate the problem, I manage 12X 2011 21.5' iMacs in a lab at work. Win 7 Professional 32bit installed on these machines just as it should (same disks that produces the black screen flashing cursor).
I have read that some people thing it is a Boot Rom version issue, and there may be some substance to this as WIN 7 installs so easily on the 2011 iMacs in my lab.
I called Applecare about this and went through the procedures outlined above. The guy was very helpful and sympathetic but he had no answer to the problem. His suggestion was to pull the SSD out and do it again with only one drive. As the machine can ship from Apple with both of these drives I really do doubt that pulling the SSD would make a difference.
Mac OS 10.6 and 10.7 work fine, no problems on both drives, so I don't think it is a drive issue.
    OK Mac gurus...over to you.

I have a bookmark for iMac w/ SSD and hard drive.
There is also the 'req'd reading' in http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
with one article on Black screen w/ iMac 2010.
