HP Envy 4-1030US keyboard problems

I am posting this two years after I bought the HP Envy 4-1030US, despite its very high cost, in the hope that I could depend on an expensive product to be of excellent quality. I was starting my freshman year in college, so I needed a reliable and light-weight laptop to carry around with me to my classes. Unfortunately, it has not been reliable at all. I began experiencing problems with the keyboard about a year after I bought it, conveniently after the one-year warranty had expired. Specifically, I have trouble with the space bar, backspace, enter key, and a few other keys that only sporadically work properly. This is clearly very frustrating and has made my laptop almost useless. I’ve never dropped this laptop nor spilled anything on it, so there’s no reason that the keyboard should start malfunctioning like this. As a college student with two more years to go until graduation, what am I supposed to do when my laptop, a necessary tool, becomes almost useless and the only solutions are to spend hundreds of dollars to get the keyboard fixed or buy another laptop altogether? I am extremely disappointed in the quality of this HP product. I feel like I wasted a lot of money on it, only to find myself stuck with a malfunctioning laptop that causes more stress than it’s worth. College students are under a lot of financial pressure and we can’t afford for our laptops to suddenly need repairs or replacements, so I felt the need to raise awareness about this issue.

Hi mn425,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
I am sorry to hear that you are having such problems with your keyboard, but it is possible  that there is a simple solution.
Over time, dust and other debris can collect or fall between the keys and cause them to not respond. From what you are writing, it is only a few keys that are having this problem; so it is likely that some cleaning or the  use of a can of compressed air could prove effective.  Please see the following pages, that may prove helpful to you and offer some other possibilities.

  • My brand new Envy 4-1030us model's fan is running most of the time. it is noisy and annoying.

Just bought HP Envy 4-1030us 2 days ago and i have configured my needful software. The fan seems to be running most of the time (battery or powered) and it is very noisy and annoying. I turned off the coolsense too but still noisy. Pls let me know what to do? Is it problem with the laptop. Should I return?

You can enter the BIOS and disable the "Fan Always On"  setting.
I suggest leaving the coolsense on.

  • Migrated User Account Keyboard Problem AFTER Login

I have a brand-new MacBookPro (with multi-touch trackpad) that came with Leopard preinstalled. When I first started up the new computer, I set up a new administrator user account first. Then I used Migration Assistant to migrate my primary user account from my PowerBook G4, which is running the latest version of Tiger. I can log into my old user account with the same password I have always used, and everything looks fine--my old desktop is there, my Mail, iCal and iTunes settings all look great, etc.--but I can't use the keyboard. I can use the mouse to click on menus; the keys for the volume and backlight controls work, and some of the keys on the right side of the keyboard work (which seems particularly weird), but I can't do anything else with the keyboard. When I log out of the account and try to go back to the new admin account, the keyboard no longer works at all until I reboot. If I go directly into the new admin account, the keyboard is fine; it only starts locking up AFTER I log into my old user account. I have not had any keyboard problems with any other user accounts that I have created from scratch on the MacBookPro, nor have I had problems with the other user accounts I migrated from the PowerBook. After consulting with an Apple rep on the phone, I have tried the following things:
    1. deleting my migrated keychain file on the problem user account and letting it make a new login keychain;
    2. deleting the original default keychain on the PowerBook and re-running the Migration Assistant;
    3. deleting the problem user on the MacBookPro using the option of creating a disk image, and then creating an empty file in the Users folder with the same name as the problem user account and then dragging the files from the disk image into the folder, and then creating a new version of the user account with the same name, password, etc.;
    4. running Disk Utility to fix permissions (multiple times);
    5. I have completely erased and reinstalled the system on the MacBookPro using the install DVDs twice. The first time, I ran Migration Assistant immediately after the "Welcome," and the second time I set up a new administrator account first and then ran Migration Assistant.
    6. I have also tried the steps outlined in this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306840.
    7. I have tried moving my user files over by hand but then I have a ton of permission problems and I was having trouble getting my Mail settings/mailboxes to move over properly. I've spent hours and hours on this.
I have NEVER had so much trouble upgrading to a new computer or a new OS in all the years I've owned Macs! What am I missing???

Well...I'm not sure which of the following fixed my problem, but once I realized it was something to do with the numeric keypad keys, I went into both the Keyboard & Mouse preferences and the Universal Access preferences and I made sure that I set everything back to the default settings. I suspect that going to Keyboard&Mouse-->Keyboard Shortcuts and clicking on "Restore Defaults" is what did the trick. So far, so good. I hope this helps somebody else; I couldn't find anything else anywhere about this somewhat quirky problem.

  • Keyboard problems out of the box with iPhone 3g

My iPhone 3g is showing strange keyboard behavior, typically starts when launching the SMS app.
The "P" and Backspace keys, the keys on the rightmost part of the touch area, are non-responsive. The issue will correct itself after 15 mins or so, but it's become very annoying.
I've made sure I'm not touching any other part of the screen as a possible cause. Showed it to and had three other iPhone users see what I see and they all agree it seems like a bug, just to confirm it's not me.
Took it to the Apple Store and of course the iPhone behaves when showing it to the Genius.
Anyone else experienced keyboard problems with 2.0 firmware?

Well, I took my 16GB iPhone 3g (white) back to the Apple Store today and the Genius looked it over -- said that's the first keyboard problem he's seen come in and mentioned that it was strange the "dead zone" on the touch screen was vertical since, according to him, most "dead zones" tend to be horizontal areas. He said the touch screen matrix is laid out in three horizontal bands on the screens.
Bottom line: he gave me a new working iPhone 3g.
He did mention that all returned iPhone 3g's are being sent directly back to the iPhone 3g engineering team for full "autopsies", not just sent back to factory for refurb. He said they want to fully diagnose and understand what defects are out there so as to solve the root cause moving forward.

  • HELP! Keyboard problems

    HELP!
I have tried all sorts of things, like:
    - removed syst prefs to desktop then restarted
    - un-done, re-done, re-booted various options in International and Keyboard & Mouse
    - run disk utility, both from startup CD AND in target disk mode
    - ran permission smasher
    - swapped out different keyboards and/or mice
...but these are my keyboard problem symptoms:
    - numeric keypad not working
    - the shift key (for caps & shift characters) not working&
    - commands (i.e., "Select All") not working
...the keyboard does not work in any native Mac appl (e.g., Mail, Safari, TextEdit).
The only time my keyboard will work correctly is when I create a test new user and log-in. So it's just for me as user.
Also, oddly enough, keyboard prefs do not show up anywhere.
Anyplace where I should see something, such as
Library>preferences - there should be a file com.apple.keyboardtype.plist --- there is no file in any of the folders anywhere.
All of a sudden the keyboard stopped working, but the mouse attached to it still works. I have no clue what to do to fix it and my AppleCare has ran out.
Other things I have noticed and tried:
    - running tech tool
    - repairing permissions
    - switching usb ports for the keyboard from the back of the display
    - removing the mouse from the back of the keyboard
    - unplugging everything but the keyboard and mouse
    ...any ideas???

    Hi, DR -
The numeric keypad not working sounds like MouseKeys became enabled in the Universal Access part of System Preferences.
The Shift key and Command keys not working sounds like Sticky Keys became enabled in the Universal Access part of System Preferences.
Check the Universal Access control pane in System Preferences - if those features are checkmarked, try unchecking them.

  • Keyboard problem typing random letters and symbols

I'm having a keyboard problem, the g key, t key, and 5 key type random letters and symbols.  i just spent $700 a few monoths ago to a genius [at getting my money] for a logic board after spillin somethin on it.  didnt spill anyqthing time.  shoot.  is this goin to be another major expenditure?  downloaded os x 9.4, hoping that might somehow cure it.  yeah right

    Hi Rob,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your running into an issue with the keyboard on your MacBook Pro. The article linked below provides suggestions that will resolve most keyboard issues like the one you described.
OS X Mavericks: If keys on your keyboard don’t work
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13809
    If other keys don’t work
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, then click “Text to Speech.” If “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” is selected, deselect it or click Change Key to select another key.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, then click Mouse & Trackpad. Make sure Mouse Keys is off. If Mouse Keys is on, pressing keys in the numeric keypad moves the pointer instead of entering numbers.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Input Sources. Select “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu and make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected. To see the keyboard layout, click Keyboard, then choose “Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar.”
    I hope this helps.

  • Keyboard problems with Enter, delete, backspace, and right/left arrows

In some applications, such as Yahoo and this message block right now !!, when composing a message, the arrow keys and delete, backspace keys become non responsive. Various ones will work on a random basis.
I am getting double "carriage returns" also. Maybe this is why in Omegle when I press ENTER, it will not post a chat message; it will bring up a scroll box and for me to post the comment, I have to use the mouse to click ENTER.
I have changed batteries in my keyboard, uninstalled /reinstalled Firefox. I have checked the above websites in Chrome and other browsers, and there are no problems.
This has happened before, I don't recall what the solution was or if it just went away.'''

  • Thinkpad keyboard problem - some keys generate multiple keys when pressed

thinkpad keyboard problem - some keys generate multiple keys when pressed
For example, "t" generates "tr", "y" generates "yu", "backspace" generates "backspace" plus "IBM access connections", "m" generates "mn" and "n" generates "mn".  Not all keys are wrong.
For what it's worth, the odd behaviour started shortly after a trip to Miami in which I had a meeting at a cafe in which we were undercover but it was pouring cats and dogs - it was like having a meeting in a sauna - so I am wondering if the high humidity could have caused the behaviour.
I tried replacing the keyboard but the new keyboard has the same problem.
The machine in question is a Thinkpad T23 running Windows XP Pro

  • G560 Keyboard Problem

In all my games, including browser based flash games, I've found a rather annoying keyboard problem. Whenever I hit a key, the computer believes I have hit a nunber key. If I only hit one key over and over, it cycles through numbers. So if I hit "W", the computer believes that "4" was hit. If i hit "W" again, it believes a "5" was hit, and so on and so forth. It appears that this issue was caused by a Windows Update. I did a system restore, which fixed the problem, but when I shut down, updates were installed, and when I booted up the next day, the issue has returned.
I am currently running games in compatability mode, and that seems to keep the problem at bay, but it's not a complete fix, as certain games do not function properly in compatability mode. I've called Windows, and posted on their forums, but they said to come here. Does anyone know what the permanent fix for this is? Has Lenovo released a fix?

it is actually a security program put in lenovos to prevent keyloggers from
getting your info on what you type into your computer. but to solve this problem,
go to start -> type in msconfig -> enter -> startup -> and uncheck GID
    Desktop Application -> restart.
what the program does is save everything you type as consecutive numbers.
That way people looking at the keyloggers won't be able to see what you
actually type in since they show up as consecutive numbers with no
distinguishable pattern to crack the code. that is why in some games everything
shows up as numbers even tho you type a letter.

  • Floating keyboard problem

I have this floating keyboard problem. Is there a fix to this?
I jail broke my device and I know it's not anything I downloaded after that because none of the things I downloaded have anything to do with mail or photos. This only happens when I try to send a photo through email. Help please!

Jailbreaking voids the Apple warranty and also means that you will not get any support from Apple, including from this Apple forum. Jailbreaking can't be discussed in this Apple forum.

  • Numeric keyboard problems

can anyone help with advice regarding my keyboard problem. Basically, I have tried two different apple keyboards and neither of them will work on the numeric keypad. Does anyone know what is wrong?

If restarting the computer, logging in and out of a user account, trying a second
user account to see if the problem exists computer-wide or only in one account,
does not work, you could see if resetting PRAM/NVRAM or even PMU for that
specific computer may flush the system, should it be a software error.
There is an Apple Hardware Test on the bootable Installer disc DVD which
came with your computer, and perhaps that could spot some error in the
USB or keyboard, but it may not show a subtle issue, such as a bad cord
or one port connector in the computer which may be bent, etc.
User account issues are sometimes responsible for other problems, but there
could be something a bit screwy with the port the computer keyboard is plugged
into; so have you tried a different port? Does that part of the board work if the
computer is started up in SafeBoot?
Does Keyboard Viewer show any activity on the keyboard in that area even
though the input does not show on the screen?
On a portable computer, there is a way to turn off the Numeric Keyboard area,
which is different than a full-size keyboard; you can make it 'ignore input' to
the computer if the correct settings or other keys are selected to do so. And I
wonder if this is possible with a regular full size external keyboard on an iMac.
Some settings in Universal Access in a desktop computer may affect how
the keyboard works; or what may be expected from pressing some keys
may change due to settings accidentally chosen through this panel. A few
can be activated by accident, if some check-boxes were default-chosen.
With the portable computer, it takes a bit more effort to ignore numeric
keyboard, since it is part of the main built-in keyboard. In a desktop
Mac, the keyboard/mouse controls in System Preferences panel offer
a few choices, and Universal Access offers others which can be turned
on or off at times without a conscious effort; given pre-conditions in there.
So, if the software and/or settings in the system are to be ruled out, any
possibility of settings or a damaged OS X need to be weeded out. If
the hardware is known good and that includes the logic board and or
USB ports used to connect the USB standard or pro keyboard to the
Mac are good, then further investigation is required. Patient, tedious.
{If you use a powered USB hub, be sure to have the keyboard directly
plugged into the computer. A mouse can be run from a powered USB
hub, but some hubs don't work or work incorrectly in some cases with
keyboard commands on startup. And having too many things attached
in a string of USB devices (unpowered hubs, etc) can cause a brown-
out or power failure; since USB can only support a limited number of
items attached to the computer's internal powered ports. Be they USB
or FireWire, there is a limit and rules apply; should peripherals be in
    a string attached to a computer, so demand won't exceed supply.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IOS 7, iPad 4: keyboard problems with Shift key

Since I have upgraded my iPad 4 to iOS 7 a few days ago the keyboard drives me mad: I did not experience the overall slowness of the keyboard as reported by so many others. Anyway, I reset my settings just to be safe. But the reset had absolutely no influence on my real problem which is as follows:
Whenever and wherever (each app) I type, it is just a matter of luck whether or not the keyboard will recognise me typing the Shift key in order to get capital letters - and there are many caps in German words because each noun must be in caps! In 70% of all cases iOS will just write my capital letters as lower-case ones because it just does not recognise me hitting the Shift key, especially when typing quickly. Under iOS 6 this problem did not exist. I am losing so much time fixing missing capitalisation in all my texts (I use iPad for business) and/or typing extra slow and hitting the virtual Shift key on the screen extra hard that there is absolutely no flow in typing. Everything is just slow, whacky and it drives me nuts! How can it be that the latest iPad 4 with so much CPU power cannot handle a simple thing as typing caps? I am also experiencing problem when using the wipe-up gesture to get umlauts on vowels. It is not as bad as with Shift, but also noticeable.
Is there any solution to this problem? It is a major impediment and I am even considering an iOS downgrade because it is basically killing my ability to work efficiently with my iPad. Otherwise I am kinda okay with iOS 7, but this is a real show stopper. I wonder why I found nobody else on the whole web mentioning this problem.

Thank you Habitoti for describing the necessary change to the way that we need to type on ios devices to avoid the capital letter problem.
Holding the shift key fractionally longer solves the problem. But why oh why would Apple require users to fundamentally change the way they touch type by introducing a different keyboarding protocol like this? It is most unlike Apple to have us now have to consciously think about how to touch type all over again.
Intuitive operating systems are what make Apple so great. This keyboard problem is definitely not intuitive and it is driving me crazy.
Apple, you need to change the time weighting on the shift key in iOs 7.04.
    Please, pretty please!

  • Really weird keyboard problem with my macbook.

    Hi Everyone,
I've been having an unexplainable keyboard problem all day now. The keyboard on my Macbook is unresponsive, and the trackpad is stuck on right click. BUT when I plug in a USB keyboard, both my macbook keyboard and my trackpad work after I restart. They continue to work for a little while, but a couple minutes after I unplug the USB keyboard, the both stop working again. I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Is there anyone out there that has any experience with something like this?
    Thanks!
