HP Envy 700-414 won't boot up. HELP!

Hi all,
I had recently downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 and was planning to dual boot with my HP Envy 700-414 (with Windows 8.1). The installation seemed like it was going good, then Ubuntu prompted me for a restart to complete the installation, however, when it restarted, it won't boot up Windows 8.1 OR Ubuntu. It will just remain frozen on the HP logo. I've tried to go into the BIOS or changing to boot to boot from my CD again so I could attempt to re-install, but when my computer turns on, it will just stay frozen on the HP logo.
And when I press F10 or F9 to change boot settings and what not, it won't do a single thing. It's like it's stuck or something. And I don't know how to go about troubleshooting this.
PLEASE HELP!!!!! I've had this desktop for less than a month! Could this be a motherboard or hard drive failure? (I REALLY hope not)
Note: I don't want tips on how to dual boot, I just want to know what I could do get my computer to boot up again. Even if it means I'll lose the data on my HDD.
P.S. - I also might have allocated too much space on my hard drive when I was trying to install Ubuntu. Don't know if that would have anything to do with it though.

  • HP ENVY 700-049 Won't Update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x20018

I recently purchased an HP Envy 700-049 desktop and have updated to the latest Windows 8.  I have re-downloaded and installed all of the Windows 8 drivers listed on the support page.  I disabled the wireless LAN in Windows (no way to do so in the BIOS that I can tell).  After all of that I went to the Windows App Store and ran the 8.1 update.  The machine reboots and begins to configure the devices, but stops prior to completion with the error SYSTEM_THREAD EXCEPTION NOT_HANDLED.
    On reboot I am given
    0xC1900101 - 0x30018
This is showing up in Google...and I tried common reccomendations (install updates, install latest driver, disable WLAN)... are there any additional suggestions or am I just going to have to hang tight on MS to fix this?
My wrist is getting tired from bouncing over to the quickbar. :-)

I am on 8.0, trying to update to 8.1.  I can't install the 8.1 drivers.  It is for all intents and purposes a new OS.  The 8.1 drivers clearly indicate to me that the OS is not at a compatible level "Your system does not meet the operating system requirements. Update has been cancelled. (9998)".
I did note that the intel onboard driver was not good, don't know where that fell by the wayside, but I re-installed the HP Win8 driver and things were good.
There are two graphics cards, onboard and radeon.  I updated the catalyst drivers too.
All of the HP drivers were up to date, all of the Windows Updates are installed.
I disconnected ALL devices except for the mouse and keyboard.
The drivers are installed fine for 8.0.  But the way that the windows 8.1 update is delivered is through the Microsoft App Store.  It downloads, installs and reboots.  There is a second reboot where it starts updating the drivers.  I know that it's a problem at that particular point, but without being able to isolate the driver that it's having a problem with...it's a crapshoot.
I researched a bit and looked at the winstore.log files, but nothing in there seems to indicate a specific driver...I think this is the log at the point where the update chokes...

I'm not sure where that "travel log" is written to, but that may have more information in it.  I'm not seeing anything obvious in the Event Viewer.  I tried to narrow down the time, and I see some errors popping up, but I'm not quite sure if they are related.
I may keep troubleshooting, I think I may just clean out the app store cache and give it a try again.  There was a comment that I read that seems to indicate disabling file sharing settings can resolve the issue.  I also saw a suggestion on downloading the preview and then updating from that.  This is a fairly new box (at least to me), and it's running fine otherwise...but I would like to get 8.1 running to get the integrated tools.  Worst case scenerio I could just download from DreamSpark and reinstall.

  • Mac won't boot up, help required!

My mac came up with a message saying to power the mac down and re-boot it. I powered it down and now it won't boot back up again, just going to a blue screen with the curcular lines icon spinning round and nothing happens. It wont boot up in safe mode either and can't get it to recognise the OSX cd to re-install they system software. Have tried booting up with CD in and holding down C but nothing is happening.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    ps. I'm running OSX 10.4

Hi ressull, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You don't mention which Mac. We need to know.
Do you have Firmware Password Protection on? That disables any Boot Option keys.

  • Dropped iBook - won't boot up, help!

Because I'm an idiot, I dropped my beloved G4 iBook on the ground and now it won't boot up. I can get it to turn on, I get the startup chime, it gets to the blue screen with the grey Apple and spinning progress indicator...and that's it. The spinning disc just keeps on spinning indefinitely. No error messages, no kernel panic, nothing like that. Tried booting in Safe Mode...get the blue screen with grey apple, no spinning disc, and that's as far as I can get.
I bought it secondhand from a friend so no warranty or Applecare or anything like that. Is the hard drive okay? Could something have come loose and just needs to be snapped back into place? Did the motherboard get cracked? What could cause this type of problem, especially since I can't even get it to boot in Safe Mode, and what can I do to fix it? Is it even fixable? Have I lost all my files? Can I just take it to a repair shop and everything will be okay?!?!
    helllllllp!!!! :'(

Hi from another idiot iMac user (I last posted when I spilled a glass of water on my desktop's keyboard...)
I dropped my iBook G4 on the stairs this morning Since it sort of slid down the carpeting I thought I'd be OK but it was just like the other used described - Apple logo, spinning startup icon, a few clicks and whirrs then nothing.
I followed your instructions below, and the Installer loaded. I have clicked on Introduction, agreed with the licensing, selected a destination (clicked on HD), but then I got a message "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume without changing your install settings. Click Options to change settings. A newer version of Mac OS is installed."
I never got a Repair Disk button. I never installed newer software, unless it was an update that downloaded from Apple. What should I do?
    Thanks!!!!

  • IMac G4 700 MHz won't boot

    Hey there all,
A cousin got an old iMac G4/700MHz running Mac OS 10.4.x. It worked fine when she bought it but, now it won't finish booting. I've turned it on and it won't get beyond the gray screen with the little gear cycling. I zapped the P-RAM and still nothing. What else might be the issue? It's a Mac for her elementary school-age kids, for school work(research) and web-surfing to kid-friendly sites. There are no external devices connected to it not even speakers, just a keyboard and mouse.
TIA for any assistance or suggestions.

Try starting in Safe Mode, with the Shift key depressed during startup until you either get a desktop or a message saying that you are in Safe mode. If this gets you a desktop, don't use the computer just yet. Do a regular restart. If you still get a desktop, it's probably OK. If not, post back.
If the computer has been stored off wall power for any time, or unplugged from the wall every night, the internal logic board battery is likely dead. That can cause startup issues. However, on this model iMac, it takes the same effort to get to the battery as it does to replace the hard drive. Although neither is considered a "user-serviceable" part, should you feel comfortable with dealing with computer innards, google for "iMac G4 takeapart" to find instructions. Illustrated instructions are out there and they may help you assess your comfort level with home repair.

  • HP Envy k015dx m6 - Won't Boot

I bought my laptop 3 months ago from the US. I live in a different country (Cyprus) without an HP Service Center.
My laptop 12 hours ago was ok...
Now, when i press the power, i see the power and f12 buttons blink once. After 2-3 seconds my laptop turns off. The screen is black without any indication.
I have contacted the online chat support and we did a hard reset. The same problem exists... They told me that this is probably a motherboard issue.
How i can get this fixed? The online chat support told me that they can't send a service box outside the US. How i can use my warranty if HP does not support clients outside US?

After a lot of research i found the service center here in Cyprus (MULTITECH CORPORATION LTD)
I have taken the laptop to the official HP service site 1 week ago (31/3/14).
After 7 days the technical department told me the following stupid answer:
" Your motherboard needs replacement. The official HP site responded to us, that your laptop is 5 years old and so the parts are not available anymore. We can't do anything else. It's your choice to come and pick up your laptop.
I asked to talk to another department and they told me also that HP does not have the certain motherboard (SN. 800926654) available in Europe. So we can't do anything else"
They also gave me the contact number for the greek HP site. I called them and they told me that they will call me back in max 24h. Lets see.
Question: Why HP gives Warranty if they can't provide it!!!!?!? The client does not care if a certain part is not available. The client does not have to call to different countries to solve the problem alone... If the laptop can not be fixed and is in Warranty then they must give a replacement ASAP.

  • SD photo card reader is not working; not recognized by PC (HP Envy 700-414) running Windows 8.1

My SD photo card reader suddenly stopped working - I get an error message to the effect that USB device not recognized.  How do I get this working again?

    Hello @mnskier,
I understand that your SD Card Reader has stopped working. I think you should do a backup and recovery of your computer to ensure that you do not have a hardware issue. The best way to do that is to replace the software so you have ruled out settings or a bad driver as possible causes. To backup your personal information and ensure that it is not lost I would like you to review and follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), which will ensure your personal files are up to date.
***WARNING!! If you want to keep any emails or bookmarks/favorites you will want to back those up as well as I do not believe they are backed up in the HP Backup process.
Next, I would like you to review and follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8), which will you through recovering your computer back to factory settings.
*** IMPORTANT - Your personal files such as libraries, personalization settings, user accounts, and desktop themes are permanently removed. As well the computer settings are returned to the defaults (the way it was when it came from the factory). All apps and software that were installed on the computer when it came from the factory are reinstalled, and their settings are reset to the defaults. Additionally, software, apps, programs, and everything that you have installed or saved on the computer are permanently removed.

  • Envy 700-414 and Logitec Z906 speakers

Love the PC but 1 major problem. The speakers are 5.1 and I only have the green audio out limiting me to only 2 speakers.
How do I get true 5.1 out of this machine ?

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    RPR692000, welcome to the forum.
Here is a guide that will help you connect your speakers:
    Knowing Your Computer
All computers have atleast three connectors
    Line-In.
    Line-out.
    Mic.
Computers with six channel audio systems have two more connectors, i.e
    rear out.
    center/subwoofer out.
You’ll need to make sure if you  have these extra connecters by checking the back side of your computer.
If your computer doesn’t have these two extra outputs: rear out and center/subwoofer out, it’s a disadvantage, you’d be able to connect your 5.1 anyway but you would require to use the line in and mic-in plugs as an alternative. Of course there is a really big disadvantage in using this configuration: you cannot use your microphone or line in inputs and your 5.1 speaker system at the same time. This is the reason that you should buy a motherboard with 5.1 system built in.
Configuration Of Computers With 5.1 Supporting Motherboards
    Front cable: To Line out.
    Rear cable: To the Rear-Out
    Center/Subwoofer cable : To Center/Subwoofer Out.
Configuration Of Computers Without 5.1 Supporting Motherboards
    Front cable: To Line-out.
    Rear cable: To Line in.
    Center/Subwoofer cable: To Mic-in.
    Software Configuration
After every single connection has been made, its time to setup audio configuration in operating system. Since we had Realtec drivers on our PC, Double clicking it opened up Speaker Configuration tab. In various options you should select 6 channel mode for 5.1 speaker output and check Only surround-kitif your PC has the separated rear and center/subwoofer outputs and leave it if you don’t.
Please click the "Thumbs up + button" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.

  • Mac Mini Core 2 Duo died and now won't boot - any help or advice appreciated...

    Hi, all
I have a core 2 duo Mac Mini (possibly a 2008 model?) which has been retro-fitted with a superdrive at some point in its life and was running Lion.
It used to be left running 24/7, but one day I returned to find it powered down and it will not boot up at all now. Applying power and then pressing the power button results in the cpu fan starting, and the HD spinning up - the white power indicator lights steady, but other than that there is no sign of life - no noises, beeps, no display, nothing.
I'm not averse to getting the lid off (I've opened up a fair few mini's before ) so any suggestions as to what my next step should be?
As an aside, the Intel minis have a small push button on the logic board, about half-way down the right hand side - what is this for?
Many thanks in advance for any help and advice you may be able to offer.
    O.

    Thanks for your reply, mooblie...
I have tried the SMC reset (which, unless I have misunderstood occurs as a result of removing all power for a while then reconnecting the psu and turning on as normal after a few seconds delay) with no luck.
The PRAM reset is a bit of a problem, though, as I do not appear to have any keyboard function - I'm using an aluminium Apple keyboard and mighty mouse (both are the wired variety, plugged into separate USB ports), but the 'boot' process doesn't appear to get far enough to enable operationof the keyboard (shift lock light doesn't light if appropriate key pressed), so I can't give it the 4-finger death grip at power up.   The mouse illuminates, and I've tried all 4 USB ports, BTW...
I forgot to add to the previous post that there is 2GB RAM fitted, and both Bluetooth and Airport.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot! Help me!

    Macbook Pro 15 inch mid 2010 - 4gb - 500gb - running OS X Yosemite
Okay. I've tried resetting the NVRAM multiple times. I've also reset the SMC several times as well.
I was using my Macbook Pro like usual when all of a sudden it shut down. After that, I've been unable to successfully boot the machine. Sometimes it will try but will never actually make it to the desktop. Even when I boot using the ALT/Option key, it will sit on that screen for several minutes sometimes and then shut off again, usually just the screen goes black. And no, I can't see any data when I shine a light on the screen.
The furthest I've got is to disk utility where I was able to "unlock" my hard drive and begin a repair. It shut down before the repair could complete.
What is this? An HDD problem or something worse? Thanks for any help!

If you have the original installation disks, use that to try to access and repair the HDD.
Start the MBP as if you were installing the Snow Leopard OSX.
When you see a menu bat appear at the top of the display, click on UTILITIES.
From the drop down menu, select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Won't boot up, help...

My two and a half year old reliable laptop recently became unstable and started freezing up. I then noticed issues of it becoming slower to boot up and very slow to process iPhoto or iTune commands. Lastly, the dreaded white screen with the folder and a question mark at startup. I followed the instructions for booting up by resetting the SMC and the NVRAM settings. This seemed to help since I was then able to boot up successfully. Today however I planned to boot up in safe mode and I am unable to boot up at all. I got the apple logo, the progress indicator and the blue bar that ran all the way thru the full bar at the bottom of the screen and then disappeared. The apple logo and progress indicator remained spinning for over an hour so I shut it down. I understood it takes longer in safe mode but I thought that was excessive. I attempted safe mode again and the screen gets as far as a third into the blue bar and then the screen goes black. I am not able to boot up at all. I don't know what to do, is my data on the hard drive retrievable?

    hi AdreesInator,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Try Performing a Power drain and see.
      Remove the AC and Battery
Hold the Power Button down for at least 15sec
Reconnect just the AC and check
    If not:
Try Booting into Safemode and check if the HDD is present.
Start Hitting F2 when you power on the system
Under Information Start look for this
IF the HDD is not there then I think you have problem with the Harddrive.
You can try reseating it or try calling Lenovo Technical Support Team.
    Let me know our findings
    Hope this helps

  • My imac won't boot up help!

I was going away for 2 weeks so I powered off my mac so it could rest. When I came back it wouldn't boot up. When I turn it on, it shows the Apple sign, the loading sign, and the bar. The bar doesn't load all the way, only a tiny bit. Then, it goes away and all that is left is the Apple and loading sign. It stays like that forever! My dad says it's not working because I turned it off by the power button and not from the computer. Please help because I don't want to pay to get it fixed somewhere!

You need to repair the hard drive and permissions, then reinstall OS X. Please let us know what version of OS X is presently installed on the computer.

<and it stops there. I can't get into windows. I have tried reseting the CMOS but that didn't help. Should I flash back? How would I go about doing that?
My specs are core 2 duo e6300, cosair xms 800mhz ddr2 2gb, evga geforce 7900gt, enermax liberty 500w

One word of advice for people if you decide to flash up your bios. When you make your bios flash disk, make a flash disk for your currect bios version too. That way if you can't boot up into windows after updating your bios, you have a disk ready to flash your system back down to your last version.
It happened me the other evening when I flashed to beta 721 and it would freeze once windows had booted. Luckly I was able to get in safe mode and create a version 716 floppy and reflash.

Many thanks for this constructive support. I have bookmarked your links for future reference. Everything is working as it should and we have found a happy retirement home for the G4 (in target disk mode). I know that 'archive and install' doesn't solve the problem every time having gone through an install of the Adobe Suite on my Macbook Pro which ended in a resolution to run the application on the G5 Quad only.
By the way, can you get Windows Media Player to work on Intel Macs? I've had no success and anticipate no help from Microsoft.

  • Envy 700 w/Windows 8.1 Boots Past Advanced Start-Up Options Menu

I have an Envy 700 desktop with Windows 8.1.  I'm trying to install a non-signed driver. I've gone through the documented process that is supposed to bring up the Advanced Startup Options screen, however when I do the Re-start it boots right past it and to the HP logo and proceeds to boot right back into windows again.
In fact I can't even get it to the menu to boot into Safe Mode without going into Command mode, msconfig, and manually checking the box to start into Safe Mode.  Even then there's no way I've found to get to the Advanced Startup Options menu to stop doing signed driver checks.
Also I'm afraid some day if I have a real problem I won't be able to even get into Safe Mode.
Anyone have a solution...it must have something to do with the HP boot process not Windows.
    Thanks!

I was never able to get the Advanced Startup Options menu to display more than maybe half a second before it continued to boot.  I knew which menu item I wanted to select so just kept tapping the 7 key which is for disabling the driver signature checking and it did continue to boot as it has however my menu item did take affect so I was able to load my unsigned driver.
This issue has to have something to do with the HP routine I'm guess as it just blows right by the Advanced Startup Options to show the HP circle logo and boot normally.  Hopefully there's some ideas on how to actually fix this...thank you for your support!
