HP ENVY 7640 MAKES GRINDING SOUND

My new Envy 7640 makes a grinding noise when scanning or shutting down. I discovered that the scanner makes the sound when it is traveling back and forth on the rail. It isn't loud just a little annoying. Is this normal? Just want to be sure.

Hey @tdizzy,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're hearing a grinding noise coming from your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer when scanning or when the machine is shutting down. I would like to offer my assistance with this noise issue today.
The printer will make some mechanical noises as the scanner bar moves or as the machine shuts down.
Unfortunately, via the forums I am not able to actually 'hear' the noise to assess if it is normal behaviour or not. Of course any grinding or clicking noises tend not to be normal behaviour of a printer.
To best support this issue I would recommend contacting our Technical Support queue by phone.
HP Technical Support can be reached at: 800-474-6836.
If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region.
HP Worldwide Contact
Once you have the phone support agent on the line, explain the issue and hold the phone up to the printer so the agent can actually hear the noises that are occuring.
I wish you luck going forward with this!

Bought Envy 7640 and noticed audible chirping noise from power unit. Researched forums etc and found it is a common problem. Contacted HP support (very hard to find) and spent hour explaining to agent including links to forums/youtube of noise etc etc.

Are you sure as this doesnt appear to solve the problem say I
Oh yes says agent this will work.
Complete new printer arrives and problem is exactly the same.

Dont see i have a choice but to take the printer back to the shop and buy another brand, cancel the ink package and start again.
Can i find the support contact details again - can i ****

  • HP Laserject 1536dnf MFP Auto Feeder makes grinding sound

When I use the auto feeder on my HP Laserjet 1536dnf MFP it makes a loud grinding or clicking sound.  It does this when I am trying to feed paper through it for copying or for scanning.  After the paper has been fed part way through the feeder it stops making the noise.  The copy or scan does work.   It doesn't seem to be causing a problem other than being very loud.

    Hi @charlo8 ,
I see that you are experiencing loud noise when using the ADF. I would like to help you out.
Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector)
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
I have provided a document for cleaning the ADF rollers and separator pad. Just to make sure the noise isn't coming from there.
'Document feeder mispick' Message Displays on the Control Panel and the ADF Does Not Pick Up Paper o...
    Disregard the title.
You can flip up the one part on the ADF to check inside with a flashlight, to see if there is any obstructions or pieces of paper stuck inside. Flip it up where the yellow circle is marked on the picture.
    Hope this helps.

  • Envy 7640 won't print anything except the print quality diagnostic

I'm trying to get a new Envy 7640 installed and working from my desktop running XP SP3.  I have it wirelessly connected to my home network and all machines can see the printer.  If I launch the HP Printer Assistant and print the quality diagnostic page, it works fine.  If I try and print a test page from Windows (or print anything else), it spools for a couple seconds, then the print job disappears.  My wireless laptop (MacBook Pro) can print just fine.
    I've already tried the following:
    Reboot the computer
    Power cycle the printer
Uninstall/reinstall the print driver in Windows
Connect the printer directly to the desktop via a USB cable (same result as trying to use it networked)
    Restarted the print spooler service
Disabled print spooling for the printer via the Advanced tab of the Printer Properties
Manually created my own TCP/IP port and configured the printer to use it
I'm at my wit's end here.  What else can I try?  Has anyone else experienced something like this?

The difference is a Windows print job goes through the spooler, and the situation you are describing, sounds very much like the spooler is corruppted or not working.
You can also try manually clean the spooler,  this page may be helpful on what is the spooler and how to clean the spooler: http://www.techienewsnetwork.com/fixing-or-cleaning-the-problematic-windows-print-spooler/

  • Envy 7640 Can't Find 'Scan Settings'

I have an Envy 7640 E-All-In-One printer, S/N: TH4B1260YY, FPU: E4W43-64001. I am currently using OS X Yosemite, v10.10.1, with no outstanding updates on a Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i5 with 8 GB RAM. There are no error messages on the device or my computer.
I have installed the printer using the HP full-featured driver, dated 2014-09-01, version 12.39, provided by the HP Support website. The setup completed successfully, the printer is working great on the wireless network, and printer features work fine. When provided the option, I also installed HP Scan. The HP Scan standalone program opens, but does not detect any devices or scanners.
On a nearby Windows 7 machine, I was able to setup the scanner and use it from the software for that OS. Scanning directly from the device and emailing the scan, as well as webscan functions also work. I am certain the issue is NOT with the device scanner itself.
I followed the troubleshooting guide found here, and completed solution #1. I was not able to complete solution #2 because in my HP Utility I do not have a "Scan Settings" option. Here is a screen grab of my HP Utility view:
I also completed solution #3 (repair disk permissions) and solution #4 (check connectivity). Both completed without issue. I then performed solution #5 (reinstall the printer software), setup the printer again without issue for printer functionality, but still do not have a scan settings in HP Utility.
    Please help!

    Hi
I understand you are having problems scanning to your Mac from the printer despite your best efforts. I'm sorry to hear that, but will certainly do all I can to help out
I would like to do a manual uninstall, follow the instructions below. I apologize in advanced this is not a fun task! I will try to make it easy to follow. Some of the files described in the following steps may not be found, if you can't find one of the files or folders on your computer, don't be alarmed, skip the step and move to the next step.
Move the files and/or folders to the trash, drag and drop
    Macintosh HD/Applications//Hewlett-Packard folder
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/ - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
In Macintosh HD/Library/Caches - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
Macintosh HD/Library/Documentation/Help/ - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
    Macintosh HD/Library/Frameworks/HPServicesInterface.framework
    Macintosh HD/Library/Frameworks/HPSmartX.framework
    Macintosh HD/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/HP Scan Pro
In Macintosh HD/Library/Image Capture/Scripts - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
In Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
Move Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist to the desktop. NOTE: Not removing the file loginwindow.plist during the manual uninstall could cause the uninstall to be unsuccessful.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Printer/hp - delete folder
In Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems, drag the following folders to the trash, HP IO and HP Trap Monitor
In Macintosh HD/Users/USERNAME (this should have a symbol of a house next to it)/Library/Preferences, drag the following folders to the trash: *Any files beginning with com.apple.print, *Any files beginning with com.hp, *Any files beginning with Hewlett-Packard, *Any files beginning with HP or hp
In MacintoshHD/Users/USERNAME/Library/Printers, drag any All-in-One printers listed here into the trash.
Drag the HP icons from the Dock and drop it on an empty space on the desktop. The icon will disappear.
    Close all open windows.
    Restart.
    Empty the Trash.
After logging in, Repair Disk Permissions
On the Dock, click  Applications, and then click Utilities.
    Double-click Disk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
Once the repair is complete, restart the computer .
    Restart the computer.
Install the software we download earlier, once the software is successfully installed we can then delete the loginwindow.plist from the desktop.
Download and install the full feature software again; HP-ENVY-7640-series_v12.39.0.dmg
Restart both the computer and the printer and check the HP utility for the scan options again.
I hope this helps, please let me know if this resolves the issue or not. Thanks.

  • Envy 7640

    Hi
I try to install full drivers for my HP ENVY 7640 but it fails. After a while the installprocess stopps and I get this message:
......failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
I´m admin of my PC so I don´t know what to do.
    Can you help me out?
    Persjo

    Hello Persjo,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue when attempting to install the printer on to your Windows 7 computer.
I do have a few suggestions that we can try in the attempt to resolve this issue.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
If you have the printer connected to the computer with a USB cable, please remove the cable from both printer and PC and leave it disconnected until further notice.
Click on the following link for the HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers.  Save the file to the desktop of the computer so that it creates its own icon.  This will make it easy to find when the download is complete.  Double click the new icon and follow the installation instructions.  You will be given connectivity options. If you choose USB, here is where you would connect to the printer and PC.
Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
    Thanks for your time.

  • New Pixma Pro-10 only makes loud sound

I just received a new Pixma Pro-10 and am trying to set it up for its first use.  Following the Quick Start guide, I've removed all of the orange tape and shipping materials.  Then I plug it in and press the power button.  The printer makes some normal sounds for a few seconds or so, and then it makes a very loud grinding sound that it's obviously not supposed to.  After several seconds of that sound, everything stops and the orange error light flashes.
I've tried turning on the printer several times and keep getting the same results.  I tried calling Canon support, but despite the fact that this is 2015, their support is only open Monday-Friday.
    Any advice?

    Hi Raucko,
We're happy to hear you were able to get the printer working.  Should you receive an error on the printer again, you can refer to the document here to see what type of error the printer is experiencing.  Should you need assistance, please call or email us using one of the methods on the Contact Us page and we will be happy to assist you.

  • HP Envy 7640 driver won't install on Yosemite Mac OS 10.10.1

I am running MAC OS 10.10.1 (newest Yosemite update). I have downloaded the newest drivers from the hp website. I am trying to install the drivers for my new printer for the first time and the drivers will not open, as they say they're not recognized.

    Hi renee1958,
Will you please provide me with the exact error message you are receiving (or a screenshot)?
I'd also like to confirm that you are trying to download and install this file: HP-ENVY-7640-series_v12.39.0.dmg.
It sounds like you have already run ASU for the latest computer updates, but I recommend following the steps in this doc: Installing Your HP Printer Driver and Software for Mac OS X.

  • Can an Envy 7640 printer be used with a Google Chrome Operating system?

Can an Envy 7640 printer be used with a Google Chrome Operating system?

You are not going to find Chrome on the drop down list, there is no driver to install on chrome, as it doesn't support the concept of a device driver. The only way to print is using cloudprint.
Cloudprint on a hp printer, means you get an email address for that printer by signing up for hp eprint.
To sign up for hp eprint, simply touch the eprint icon on the printer's screen (that looks like a mobile device signaling a printer). This HP page has detailed steps: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c04327805#N57

  • What is that loud, grinding sound?

Had my computer, MacBook, on all day.  Connected to power all day too.  Later, about early evening, the house was a little warmer and I tried to put MacBook to sleep when a very loud, almost grinding sound was coming from the laptop.  It almost seemed like the sound was coming from the battery compartment but not sure.  It was not a drive sound, nor fan sound, or CD drive sound, nothing like that- much louder and nasty sounding.  So has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know what this could be?  All help appreciated and welcomed.  Thanks

This could be the internal Hard Drive being a bit loud when it starts up or it could indicate a potential hard drive error.
If you check the S.M.A.R.T status of your drive in Disk Utility it should give some indication (but not always).
If the system works fine it's probably nothing to worry about, but you should probably speak to Apple Tech Support or make an appointment with an Apple Genius at your local Apple Retail Store just to be on the safe side.
If you have an external drive available to you, make a back up of your system (so you don't loose anything) in case the drive does need replaced.

  • Need to restart 5660 Envy to make copy after printing

I cannot make a copy after using the printer unless I turn the printer/scanner/copier off and then back on.
After making prints from my PC, when I press the "copy" button, the unit makes a sound like the scanner head is getting to copy, but all that happens is a blank page gets kicked out and the message "Printing cancelled" appears and stays on till I turn off the unit.

Hi,         Please follow the steps to solve the issue :  http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-5660-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/6809225/model/6809226/document/c02205477/

  • I just purchased the envy 7640 all in one printer and need to enlarge the print

I just purchased the all in one envy 7640 printer and want to print from my lap top but the printing that comes out is very very small and i need to enlarge it, I am not a real computer whiz so I just need step by step instructions on how to enlarge the copy being printed.  Thank You in advance for your help.

Hey , Welcome to the HP forums! I hope you enjoy your stay here. I see that you are trying to enlarge the size of a document you are trying to print. While the specific directions will change depending on your operating system, the program you are using, and the type of document you want to print, I can certainly make sure you get pointed in the right direction. Assuming you are trying to print a text document (and please let me know if you are not) then first you will want to highlight the text you are trying to change the text of. Once highlighted you are looking for an option found at the top of most windows. The option usually has a font name to its left such as Times New Roman. When you select a larger font size it will change the highlighted text so that it matches the size you selected. I've included an image of the option below.  If you are trying to print something that is not a text document then please let me know what program you are trying to print from as well as what operating system you are using. If you are not sure what your operating system is you can click here to find it. If you have any other questions please let me know. Also, if this resolves your issues then please let other forum users know by clicking on Accept as Solution below my post. I hope this helps and I hope you have a great evening!

  • Envy 7640 - problems scanning

Hi. I'm trying to set up my Envy 7640. I have downloaded and successfully installed the 'all in one' driver package and can print wirelessly fine. I can't scan to my computer though through the HP scan tool (says printer is 'unavailable' even though it shows as available on HP utility and I can print to it) or from the printer itself (computer selected but I get error messages about there being no connection or HP Scan software is not installed).
My computer is a Macbook Air running Yosemite (OS X 10.10.2)
    Can anyone help?
    thanks

    Hi @chris19,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you can print but not scan with your HP Envy 7640 printer on Mac OS X 10.10 wirelessly. I am happy to help you with your scanning concerns!
To verify the printer's hardware is functioning, are you able to make copies with your printer? Copying Documents or Photos with an HP ENVY 5640, 5660, 7640 e-All-in-One, HP Officejet 5740 and 804....
In the meantime, I would take a look through this scanning guide, A 'No Computer Found', 'Connection Required', or 'Scan Unsuccessful' Message Displays for HP ENVY 56....

  • Why does my HP ENVY 7640 continually shut down in the middle of printing?

Why does my HP ENVY 7640 All-in-One printer continually shut down right in the middle of printing?

    Hi @JE66,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that your HP Envy 7640 is continually shutting down during the middle of printing. I am happy to look into this for you!
Please, take a look through the steps within this guide, The HP Printer Does Not Turn On or Respond When the Power Button is Pressed. (Even though the guide title may not match your issue, I believe the solutions will help.) Also I would suggest to watch this video:
It is important that the printer's power cable is plugged directly into the wall outlet, and not a surge protector. See this article, Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
Afterwards, I would also make sure that the printer's firmware is up-to-date. Getting the Latest Firmware and Product Updates.
Hope this solves your problem, and have a great day!
