HP Envy dv7 7250us problems installing 2nd Hard Drive

I recently cloned my 1TB HDD to an SSD (500GB) or basically restored to it through Acronis, and it finally worked, but then I tried to install the 1 TB original drive in the 2nd Drive Bay, but when the 2nd connector is plugged into the second SATA slot, the power button doesn't work.  I disconnect the plug and the power button works again.  I couldn't find anything in the BIOS setup that you have to turn on to recognize the second drive.  Any clues?
Thanks,
Wendell Fry

I did the switch out of the long 2nd connector and the connector/adapter that came with the tray (short like the original one) didn't work either.  I hope it's not, but I suspect the connector receptor on the motherboard would be the next problem to think about.  Something with it is making the power switch not connect.  I don't know, when I disconnect the 2nd connector, it power's/boots right up.

    Hi,
Yes, it supports TWO internal HDD's. You may need something similar to this:

  • Problems installing second hard drive and second DVD recorder

I have tried about every combination of tricks to install a second hard drive.  I want to add a 250GB, WD IDE hard drive to my 3000J 115 7387A32 on the IDE channel.  I have set up the bios then added the drive and the reverse but cannot get computer to boot in either case.  It locks on the first screen where is says hit Enter to.... Enter makes the text go away, but nothing after. I am trying to install it as a single drive on the secondary IDE channel.
I know the HD is good as I removed it from another computer.  It does have Win XP on it.  I will format it using Vista IF I can get it installed.
Basically, I am having the same problems within stalling the second DVD, which is SATA.

Your initial hard drive should be jumpered as Master. When you install a second hard drive it must be jumpered Slave. There should be a diagram on the case of the HD showing the jumper locations.

  • Problems installing new hard drive

    Hi
I have a HP Pavilion DV6000 (or according the the bios DV6700) and the original hard drive is on the way out, as the machine locks up after a short while of being logged on. I ran the hard drive diagnostics from the bios and it confirmed that there was a fault with the hard drive and i should replace it. I stupidly never made any recovery disks and as the machine locks up i cannot make any recovery disks, so im going to have to do a clean install of Vista from a CD i got from work, and thats where ive hit a problem!
I got a new 320gb SATA drive and booted up the Vista installation but it gets stuck on "unpacking files" then eventually gives up and says "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available. Error code 0x8007045d". Ive tried a couple of different discs for Vista but it still comes up with the same message. So i thought if i put XP on it, I could then maybe upgrade to Vista..... No luck there as i got a similar message when trying to put XP on. So i went out and  got another hard drive but im still having the same problems!
Has anyone had problems with installing a new hard drive in a Pavilion laptop? Or has anyone got a suggestion how i can get Vista on to a new hard drive? Its really getting annoying now as its something so simple normally!
    Thanks in advance

Similar problem. Created an image on a new WD 320gb SATA HDD, then put it in my 9000 Pavillion. All worked great, except when I then tried to upgrade to WIN7 from XP, I got the same error.  Turned off all programs, used MSCONFIG to stop everything, but it kept stopping when unpacking the files. Same
0x8007045d error.  Tried to put the WIN7 on a mem stick to then move to the HP laptop, but everything copied except a boot.wim file in one of the subdirectories.  So I don't think that will work. Couldn't find anything that might help at the Microsoft site.

  • Problems installing new hard drive - pt. 2

    Hi there,
I have been using a G4 for years for my music (Pro Tools). I had the standard 29GB hard drive, and I had added a second 40GB drive, and those worked well for me for years.
A few weeks ago, the system started acting up, and it seemed like the 29GB hard drive was shot. So, I got a new one (320GB) and installed it, setting it as Master and keeping the old 40GB one as Slave.
I tried to install both OS9 and OSX on the new drive, but had problems (as chronicled in this previous thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2478863&start=0&tstart=0).
After trying a number of things, I finally got 10.3 loaded and seemingly working. Then, I realized my old Pro Tools disc needed OS9/Classic to load, so I looked around for info on if I could load OS9 without disturbing my 10.3. I tried booting to the old OS9 disc -- I didn't actually do anything, like initialize, reinstall, or anything, just looked around to see if it was possible -- and now the 10.3 isn't working either.
Neither the OSX installer, the OSX Disk Utility, or the OS9 Disk Utility seems to "see" the new drive now.
Any thoughts/theories/suggestions on what it might be? Just before the 10.3 installed successfully, I had opened the computer and pressed the IDE cable connections down, just to make sure they were secure. I don't know if that did anything, but it might have.
Now that I'm having problems again, I have of course checked those IDE cable connections again, but the computer still doesn't "see" the drive.
    I will remain calm...

Some earlier PowerPC Macs need to have OS X installed on the first 8 GB of the HDD. Mac OS X: Disk Appears Dimmed (or "Grayed Out") in the Installer. I am not sure if that is the case with your computer, but it might be a factor.
On the other hand, if you previously had both OS 9 and OS X installed on the HDD without an 8 GB partition the issue may be elsewhere.
    Try this:
    Format and Install OS 9
This process will completely erase everything on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure to Backup your User Folder and all third party apps you can't afford to lose
    • Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
    • Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
    • Reinstall OS 9
    • Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
    • Update your firmware
    Install Panther OS X 10.3.9
    • Boot from the 10.3.x install CD 1
    • Go to Installer Menu and open Disk Utility
    • (Optional)Go to File menu and Repair OS 9 Permissions!
    • Quit Disk Utility.
    • Launch Installer
    • Select Destination disk for installation
    • Click Options
    • Select Installation Option Archive and Install
    • (Optional) Preserve Users and Network Settings
    • Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
    • Check box to install BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    • Install Mac OS X 10.3.x
    • Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
    • Download and apply the 10.3.9 Combo Update
    • Restart and Repair Disk Permissions as previously!
    • Run Software Update and apply all updates available
    • Repair Disk Permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!

  • Problem: installed new hard drive but can´t boot from leopard dvd

So I just installed a new hard drive in my ibook G4. At first I started up the computer using the leopard DVD I had purchased. Got to Disk Utility and after a few seconds in the spin wheel came up and froze. So, I shut the computer down and when I tried to boot it again from the DVD I wouldn´t even reach the apple screen. Tried it a few times unsuccessfully.
As an alternative I just tried booting the comptuer using the original CD and it did read it.
I am currently at the installer page but I am concern about installing the old CD as I really would like to run the leopard dvd 10.5.
Is it that my ibook g4 can´t be booted from leopard dvd?
    Please advise. thanks!!

OK, so I decided to leave my computer resting all night and give it a new try this morning.
This morning I was able to boot from the Leopard DVD, so I don´t really think it is a problem with my superdrive. Started to format at 32 minutes to complete. Then towards the 10th minute the spinning wheel appeared, I heard the fan running, then it stopped and then I heard the superdrive making some reading noises. Then all noises stopped and now the spinning wheel continues..not sure what to do now.
In the meantime, I wanted to share also another problem that I´ve been having for quite some time which I don´t know if it is related to my current problem. It is with the computer power:
    - I´ve been experiecing load surges that take my computer from 100% to 1 or 0% and then goes to sleep or shuts down. The same thing happens when I am charging the computer.. it starts charging and showing 2 or 3% charge and then jacks up to 100% in minutes.
    - My computer also makes like a slight humming noise sometimes when the ring around the power cable is in orange color, so I move it around until it stops. When I do that sometimes it goes from orange to green eventhough it is not fully charged. There has been times that under green it appears to be charging (battery charging icon on desktop shows up), and other sometimes like right now when it is in green color and the battery icon on the desktop says ´99%´. Weird enough, once I get the cable in a certain position it enables the battery to charge, if I keep it without moving it, the load surges disappear (at least for some days).
Should I try resetting the PMU? I´ve not done it because I don´t know what consequences it may have.
NOTE: When I bought the computer I never calibrated my battery because I was (and still are) clueless when comes to computer technicalities. I tried using a different power adapter and get the sample problem.
Below is the information I get from coconut battery:
My battery is in its 256 load-cycle. current battery capacity 58512mAh (original battery capacity: 4400 mAh).

  • Problems installing second hard drive in HP Pavilion M7-1015dx laptop.

I just bought a new HP Pavilion M7-1015dx. I have successfully installed an SSD drive as the primary hard drive and now I want to use the 1tb hard drive that the computer came with as data and install it in the second hard drive bay. I have a cable that I used from my old HP DV7 when I had a second hard drive but I am having issues with my M7-1015dx laptop.
When I plug the sata cable into the second connector on the laptop and attach my hard drive (I have tried several hard drives) and go to power the laptop on, the power light just blinks a few times. Now I know there is something wrong for I just purchased the laptop two days ago... I got the idea to try the cable that I used to plug into the second connect to check and see if I plugged it into the first and I got the same issue, power light blinking. So I am wondering if it is the cable... is this possible? Are there different rated sata cables? I also tried the cable the came with my new laptop to make sure that it just wasn't the second port - I tried plugging it in to the second port with a hard drive attached and the laptop this time turned on but asked for a bootable disk because it requires boot disk to be in the 1st hard drive bay connection which I knew. I just want to give all the information so that I can get this fixed.
    Please help me

    Hey Brother-Brad,
I'm sorry you're running into issues installing a second hard drive. Your issue may not be the cable. Do you have a working hard drive installed currently with Window on it?
    If so,
    1. In Windows, Click the Start button.
    2. Type 'hard disk'
    3. Click on 'Create and format hard disk partitions' (aka Disk Management)
    4. Look at Disk 0 listed at the bottom in the middle. Does it say Basic or Dynamic?
    5. If it says Basic, right-click it and select Convert to Dynamic.
Hard drives must be set as Dynamic for dual hard drives to be recognized.
Let me know the results when you get a chance

  • Problems Adding 2nd Hard Drive

Bought a new Western Digital WD10EARS 1 TB hard drive to add into drive bay "B" in my G5. I have two problems:
    1) Unfortunately the drive has no mounting "buttons" (screw-mounted hemispherical plastic buttons) that screw into the sides of the drive. These are needed to retain the drive in the molded plastic drive holder in the Mac. I need to source four of these buttons before I can install the drive.
    2) Also unfortunately, the new drive does not have a 4-pin Molex-type power input connector like the one on my OEM WD2500 hard drive in drive bay "A." In fact I see no power connector at all. There are two small connectors on the left side of the rear panel of both drives that look identical, and Apple has supplied extra matching connectors which will work with the new drive, and there is also a spare power plug of the Molex type in the Apple wire harness, but since there is no corresponding connector on the new drive, I am out of luck there. Unless, somehow, power would be fed to the new drive on one of the left side connectors that do match...
Would appreciate any useful advice, thanks!
    ---- Bill Strohm

Thanks to both BDAqua and Old Comm for your responses. I will check for those 4 spare "overmold" mounting buttons after sending this reply. They should be there; never touched them previously. That will take care of problem #1.
    Now for problem #2:
"Yes, SATA Power is not shaped like Molex. They are likely there already, both SATA Power & SATA Data, just hidden beside/behind the other drive or mountings. There are Molex->SATA power adapters though."
Not sure what this means. As I wrote above, Apple has provided a spare Molex power connector on the same wire harness as used by the OEM drive, but there is no connector to plug it into on the new drive. Apple has also provided a spare set of two connectors, identical to the two connectors on the left side of the OEM drive, which look to match the two connectors on the left side of the new drive. Is one of those two connectors the "SATA" power connector? Or are you saying there is a third "SATA" power connector hiding somewhere in the computer chassis that I cannot see? Trouble is, I don't know what a "SATA power connector" looks like. The only unused connector on the new drive is over on the right side of the rear, on the drive's PC card itself, recessed way back behind a cutout in the right side of the panel, i.e. the panel doesn't run all the way across the rear of the drive; it stops short, leaving an opening through which I can see the top of the PC card which has a very small four-pin connector attached. Is that the SATA power connector? Seems very small to be for power... ??

  • K8N Neo4 7125 - Installing 2nd Hard Drive - Hitachi Deskstar 1TB Sata

I went to install a second drive on my old desktop, a Hitachi Deskstar 1TB Sata Drive.
Initially, it was recognized in the BIOS and Windows XP Computer Management panel.
I partitioned and formatted it in Windows XP (NTFS).
When I re-started the computer, the computer would not recognize the drive in the BIOS or Windows, as if wasn't there at all.
I am thinking this is a BIOS issue.  Is there a limitation on Hard Drive size for this board?
Also, I cannot find where the manufacturer says this is a SATA II but retailers say it is.  Could this be a problem for this board?
Lastly, could it have been recognized as a FAT32 drive but when I formatted it to NTFS that caused a problem?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  The board continues to fill my needs and I hate to just junk it because of the hard drive limitation.

My specific model is K8 Neo4 Platinum 601-7125-010 as noted in my profile.  This was the first K8 NEO4 Platinum model MSI manufactured.
Yes, the sata ports are orange, thus making it a SATA I board.  Given that, should not a Sata II drop down to a Sata I standard automatically?
I have talked to a couple of other techies, which I am not, who have had similar experiences and both of them said they later found their bios was limited to accept only certain sized drives.
I wonder what is the maximum hard drive size for this board and Bios (1.9)?

    No.
    Use HITACHI Feature Tool http://www.hitachigst.com/support/downloads/#FeatureTool
    to drop the SATA Mode.
You have to connect the HDD to another machine 1st, to be able the drive to be detected.

  • Problem installing external hard drive

I'm trying to install a Acomdata external hard drive on my new Macbook (Mac OS X version 10.5.1).
Despite following the directions and completing the installation accordingly, and after restarting the computer, when I click on the desktop icon, "SecureHD Login", a "No Device Found" message appears.
Any assistance you could give me would be much appreciated.

Same questions apply. I tried looking up your drive based on what you said, but there are about 9 models of the ACOMData 500GB external drive (USB, F/W, 'Hybrid', etc). Not knowing which you have makes it a little tougher.
That said, here's some basics to know (some are BASIC, but I have to say them):
If the drive can take an external power source/has a power switch it needs the external power. There are bus-powered drives out there (e.g. WD Passport drives).
If you're still uncertain, the size usually gives it away. Small (2.5" drives) are bus-powered. Big (3.5" drives) are not.
    Bottom-line, no power, no drive.
Two, Leopard came with a bunch of new drivers. Some supercede the versions shipped with Tiger+ driver packages shipped with devices/available on manu. website. Here's a good rule of thumb:
Try your device before installing ANY software from the manufacturer. You may be surprised to see it work just fine.
What if you installed first? well, if the device is working, who cares? If it's not, you'll need to revert back to the old drivers. You can do this through Time Machine, or reinstalling driver packs from 10.5.1 or the Leopard install disk.
If you're still stumped, drive stuff like this is solved WAY faster in-person. We're talking hours, not days. Be it Genius bar or some local geek you know, give in-person a shot. Offer your geek friend food/beer and let them at least diagnose what's going on. They may tell you a better way to phrase questions to the forum/Apple support/ACOM support.
Finally, don't be afraid to try support from ACOM. You paid for it in the cost of the drive. Might as well.
None of those are silver bullets, but I hope they help.

  • Installing 2nd Hard Drive

Just got a new HD (1 TB) for my PowerMac G5. I want to transfer my entire system including Leopard onto new hard drive. I have the original 80 GB HD now in bay-A. I would like to put the new drive in bay-A and leave out old drive.
What is the easiest way to transfer my system/data to new drive?

A much better and quicker way to this is to boot from your install DVD.
Then open Disk utility. Then select your new hard drive in the list. click on the restore tab.
then drag your old drive to the source, and the new drive to the target, and check the box 'erase destination' then click restore.
The mac will now do 'block copying' and is significantly faster sometimes 40% than other methods described in this thread.

  • Installing 2nd hard drive - Serial vs Ultra?

I have a G5 with an empty hard drive slot and today purchased a 400GB Seagate "Ultra ATA" internal hard drive. However, when I tried installing it, I was unable to connect any of the Mac's cables to it. I did some research and found there is a difference between Serial (SATA) and Ultra ATA hard drives. My question is, is there anything I can do at this point short of returning the drive to the store and buying a Serial one instead?

    Hi Johnny;
    My suggestion is return.
Your performance will be better with SATA.

Hello. I am using a Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics) that I bought a few weeks ago. It was working perfectly fine until I tried to add an additional hard drive and add more RAM to the machine. After I closed the case and plugged it back in, it won't start up at all. No sound, no lights, nothing spinning, nothing. I removed the added hard drive and RAM, but it still refuses to start. I don't know what happened. Hopefully it's not a logic board failure or anything else equally bad.

  • Laptop Repaired, With A Side of Negligence & Nonsense(Follow-up to HP ENVY dv7-7250us Casing Damage)

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/HP-Envy-dv7-7250us-Casing-Damage/m-p/3270715
The link above explains the issue I originally had with the PC.  Aside from that though, I requested they also repair the headphone port, as it became horribly loose.
My customer support experience was surprisingly easy compared to experiences with other companies.  Everything was said and done in less than an hour, and I sent out the PC 2 days later.  I recieved my PC 16 days later.  When I opened the laptop, I had found that the repair was a success, the chassis even felt more solid than when I first got the computer, and the headphone port felt very stable and firm.
But the positives stop there.  I found that there was a small, yet highly-noticeable permanent scratch on the screen.  Couldn't have been just a little more careful with it?  I'm certain this kind of scratch definitely can't be caused during the shipping process.  Something really sharp had contact with the screen.  But that issue really didn't bother me too bad.  The slight disappointment turned to mind-boggling anger and frustration when I turned the PC on.  I had found that the BIOS had been tampered with, with the message "Manufacture Programming Mode is in Unlock Mode" appearing before the company logo appears, my sign-in info was deleted, and Windows was no longer activated...  This was a STRICTLY PHYSICAL REPAIR! Absolutely no issues involving software whatsoever.  Why did he/she access my PC, install support solutions software on my PC and run diagnostics when I included a written note stating that "There are no software issues I wish to have resolved.  This is simply housing repair. I request that the PC not be powered on or operated", placed in the box with the PC.
I suspect that the changes in software are responsible for the failure of Windows Update.  Upon Windows Update restarting my PC, there was no longer any display output after leaving the BIOS and booting Windows 8, essentially rendering my PC unusable.  Not to mention, my CD/DVD drive stopped functioning following the update as well...  The display and CD/DVD drive still operate when booting into Linux via USB, but they both turn off when booting into Windows 8.
So, in repairing the housing and replacing the headphone port, my screen gets badly scratched, my PC was accessed when I requested against it, my sign-in info was removed, there's unwanted support solutions software on my PC, there's a message before the BIOS that I haven't seen before, and thanks to an issue involving Windows Update, my PC is unusable...
I'm planning to send it in again ASAP.  Life's been hard without my HP Envy dv7-7250us.  My secondary PC, an HP Envy X2-g010nr laptop/tablet detachable, is easily overloaded by the daily strain of being used as a primary computer, and it can't handle any of the 3D steam games I play on the dv7.
