HP ENVY H8 Series Issues w/ Drives & Explorer, and Windows

Hello all,
I purchased the computer brand new, and have had intermediant problems throughout its life. The wi-fi card in this computer is garbage (it is now hard-wired, being the only true solution) and the Windows installation seemed a bit buggy, but I let that slide since it may have been Microsoft's fault. (it has improved w/ updates)
My major issues I keep constantly notice after years of installing updates is that my taskbar will disappear and windows explorer will restart at random. Additionally, I have multiple media drive ports on the front (CF, SD, xD, Pro Duo, etc) and it has been giving me issues with reading SD cards. Before my SD card is blamed, I have 4 of them and they all perform perfectly in the cameras they are in. The computer does not have problems getting data off of the card after its read it intially, but in order for it to recognize that I've inserted an SD card - I have to go into Device Manager and select the SD card under the Drives section. Once it pops up (sometimes it hesitates a few seconds before doing so), the properties window shows up with no prompting errors cited. At this point, the SD card magically appears in the Explorer window like normal. I've gotten used to this practice and have the Device Manager shortcuted to my Desktop. Yes, the LED indicator does light when the SD card is physically inserted into the slot, but the computer seems to be on deaf ears about it. Either way, these are small problems with likely Software... but I figured I'd ask since they bother me occasionally when I need to just get something off the SD card quickly or am trying to quickly print out something. It has gotten better with updates however, but these issues just simply haven't been addressed, and I feel they won't be.

Issues with illustrator 10 and windows 8

any known issues with illustrator 10 and windows 8...version worked fine on windows xp....new computer with windows 8....now cannot seem to operate. Loads, and shows access but will NOT start up. help ! thanx ttp74

AI 10 is now 10 years or so old and was never tested on nor designed for Win 7 or Win 8. You should simply assume it's not compatible and will never run properly. feel free to spend your time with the compatibility modes and al lsorts of hacking with the security stuff and otehr settings, but to be honest, it will probably be a waste of time.

Envy 17t J000 - Maximum Hard Drive Size and speed

I going to place a 2nd hard drive in the open space in my Envy 17t-j000.
The Maintenance and Service Guide states;
Hard drives Supports 6.35-cm (2.5-in) hard drives in 9.5-mm (.37-in) and 7.0-mm (.28-in) thicknesses (all hard drives use the same bracket)

Serial ATA
Supports the following hard drives:
● 1-TB 5400-rpm, 9.5-mm
● 750-GB 5400-rpm 9.5-mm
● 500-GB 5400-rpm 9.5-mm and 7.0-mm
Dual hard-drive configurations:
● 2TB: (1-TB 5400-rpm x 2)
● 1500GB: (750-GB 5400-rpm x 2)
This seems to mean that I cannot use a single 2 TB 2nd drive and cannot use a 7200 RPM drive.
Is this correct? Doesthe bios not allow a larger than a 1 TB drive or the 7200 RPM?
CouldI simply partition the 2nd drive into 2 - 1TB?
Or does the manual simply mean that the standard HP unit is not supplied with larger than these sizes and I could actually use a 2 TB in the 2nd bay?

It is the latter....the list just says what HP has to sell: it does not describe a system limitation. However, I do not believe the market yet offers a 2 TB drive that will fit in the space available. The 2 TB 2.5 inch SATA drives I have seen are too thick. 7200 rpm or hybrid or SSD; not a problem.
To add a second drive you will need a second hard drive caddy and cable.

Kernel issue reading drive partitions and data?

Hey guys, I hope some of you can help with this. I don't post problems often, but feel that I finally must do so in this case. I've searched, and apologise if I've missed any related posts. Now to the problem...
Ever since the 2.6.31.x kernels have hit the repo, I've been having issues with certain partitions and external drives being mounted and the data on the drives being read.
With all the 2.6.30.x kernels and earlier releases, I could mount my external USB drives and they would auto mount and the data read and show up in Nautilus or Dolphin almost instantly. With all the new 2.6.31.x kernels, it takes a few seconds for the drives to auto mount, then about 40 seconds of hang time for the file manager window to open up showing all the files. This happens with Nautilus, or Dolphin, depending on whether I'm on my Gnome or KDE box. Reverting back to the previous kernel makes things work normally again.
Out of curiosity, I tried the latest version of Ubuntu to see what would happen since it's using the newer kernel, but things are working fine again there, so it has to be a difference in the kernel they use, or there is something wrong with my configuration under Arch.
I've already filed a bug report on this about a month or so back and was told that it's probably an upstream issue with the kernel:

Do any of you know what might be happening with this, or can you confirm the issue on your end? I don't like Ubuntu at all, so won't be switching to that. I really want to get my Arch boxes running properly again, but with the newer kernel.

Since few profile options work fine and few don’t, we suspect that the definition used to seed the data is incorrect. If so, how do we find out if there is any thing missing in the definition or do we have any tools or methods to validate the setup is correct.
Any help is appreciated.

Unable to connect wifi printer Envy 4500 - Unable to print test page and windows office file

Scan doctor suggest the software installation.
The HP software don't completed the connection of the printer.
I tried to connec the printer from the control panel and the printer is now connected: i cannot print from microsoft office file or from the test page of the printer, but i can print from acrobat or any other program.
Help me please.

However, you are able to print from all other programs from your computer to your printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this printing issue.
Recently Microsoft has released a Hot Fix to correct 'Offline' or 'Partial Printing' issues within their latest Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Operating Systems as they recognize this as an issue within their Operating System. The issue occurs when you have a networked printer and a corruption with the WSD (network) port on the Windows Operating System. This issue appears to affect a variety of networked makes and models of printers. Therefore, I am going to have you run the Hot Fix to correct the network printing issue. Please click here to install the Hot Fix. Once the website opens select the button for Hotfix Download Available. Please follow any onscreen prompts to install the fix. Once the fix is installed you should have no issues printing to your printer.
If the printing issue persists, can I please have you click here to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will run on your computer and 'fix printing' issues for you. I have an issue with the tabs and windows disappearing....?

I have a constant problem with Firefox now. I notice that with Firefox 4 and 5 there has been a reoccurring problem with the tabs and windows closing on their own. If I have more than one window open, one of them will suddenly disappear and I wont see the tab at the bottom anymore until I click out of the one I am currently on. It is very annoying and only when I get out of Firefox completely will it sometimes reappear. Even more frightening is the fact that when I move the mouse downward to the bottom of the page the page shuts out as if I clicked out of it.
I am wondering if this is a security issue meaning some type of malware or virus that is manipulating my browser or is this a common issue that has some unknown cause? I would like to know what the cause is and how it can be fixed because it annoys me all the time. Please help!!

Using Airport Extreme- Printers & Hard Drives - Mac and WIndows XP Network

I might be asking a really dumb question now, I have a Mac Pro, a PC my sons use and a laptop my wife uses. The PC and laptop both run XP Pro.
I have my Airport Extreme set up and working well with my BT Home Hub acting as my modem only - that went much easier than I thought.
All I want to do is to set up a network - my Mac (wired) to my Airport Extreme with a Canon Printer and external hard drive. I also want to be able to share files on the PC and Laptop (wireless) with other users as well as the printers. Ideally, i'm looking for a video website that will easily show how to set this up. I appreciate I may need to view several clips to get this sorted. I have tried YouTube without much success.

Wireless Router issues with MacBook Pro and Windows XP laptops

I have a d-link wireless router and I have a MacBook Pro and a Windows XP laptops. My issue is that I have to keep rebooting either the router or the modem (which I both replaced) and it still does not work right. Now can mac and windows work simultaneously through a wireless router (d-link) with no issues?

My problem is that every time I log off either computer, and when I start it back up up again I have to reconfigure all over again for both laptops to get connected to the internet. I called the d-link people and they pretty much said if i still had problem to go their web sites and download their firmware (which I have that version) so I am running out of options because I just can't turn either of them on with out reconfiguring it. Now I am using WPA on them. Could that be the issue? But right now I do not know. This is my first mac and I am getting a little irritated by this. Overall I like the mac except for this little issue. Does that help?

Compatibility issues between PS3.0 and Windows Vista

Have PS3 for Windows XP. Have had it a while and it wouldn't load on my old computer because the harddrive didn't have enough space. Now trying to load it on to HP Pavilion bought last spring. When I tried to load it, I got the error window with: compatibility issues with this software. Windows didn't find a solution. Went to adobe.com and tried update for PS3.0 which I thought should work. it said 3.0.1. Won't work. What am I missing? Am I missing anything? Will Adobe work as I want it to work? As it's supposed to work?

Well, it's not "supposed" to work in Vista. The earliest version of Elements that officially works in Vista is 5, with the special patch. However, some people have had success running earlier versions in XP compatibility mode.

Issue with Internet Explorer and Java Plug-in

Hi, I have a problem here and I hope someone knows whats going on. I have installed the Java Plug-in 1.4.0_01 and I have no problems using the plugin from Netscape.
Now when i try to load the applets using IE, it will not use the Sun plug-in that is installed. I have selected both IE and Netscape in the Java Plug-in Control Panel and IE still does not want to use the plug-in.
Is their a way to force IE to use the plugin?

Issues with Internet Explorer and iTunes

I'll pull up iTunes and any other window and iTunes will keep popping up over any other window I'm trying to view, music playing or not. It gets aggrivating trying read the news and iTunes to keep popping up any have this problem or does anyone know how to trouble shoot this or solve? Thanks.

There are lots of posts about this, but I don't think anyone has ever come back to say if they found what was causing it on their system.
Does it happen every 30 seconds on your PC? That seems to be the magic timer.
I suspect some other program has a 30-second timer set to do....something with itunes. If I had Win 7 and my PC was doing this, I'd use SysInternal's Process Monitor to try and figure out why.

Severe Security Issue with Sharing Permissions and Windows

I recently discovered a severe Security issue with the windows sharing an permission settings:
I have two users, an admin user and a parental controlled user. On my mac mini, i have a external harddrive connected. On the harddrive, i have three folders, Itunes, Iphoto (Package) and a Temp Folder. I want to share the Harddrive RW for the admin, but only R for the parental user. But the Temp folder should be accessible for RW for the parental as well.
1. I set the Drive checkbox "ignore ownership" off.
2. I set the permissions of the drive to admin RW, parental R and Everyone to "no access"
3. I apply to enclosed Items
4. I set the permission of the Temp folder to admin RW, parental RW and Everyone to "no access"
5. I apply to enclosed Items
6. I go to "File Sharing" in the Preferences and activate SMB sharing for both users
7. I delete all previous shares
8. I add the Disk and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental R, Everyone "no access"
9. I add the Temp folder and use the proposed permissions which are admin RW, parental RW, Everyone "no access" - Funny, there is a new Group called "Temp" created which has custom access on both sharepoints
10. I connect to the mac over a Windows machine (NTLM auth set appropriatly). Now I try to create a folder on the root of the Disk share, I get a denied message.
BUT WHEN I GO INTO A SUBFOLDER (eg. ITUNES or IPHOTO), WHICH HAS ALSO JUST "R" PERMISSION FOR THE PARENTAL USER, I AM ABLE TO RW, DELETE AND DO EVERYTHING!!!
TO RECAPITULATE: THE SHARING PERMISSIONS ARE "R", AND THE FILE PERMISSIONS IN THE RESPECTIVE FOLDERS FOR THE RESPECTIVE USER ARE ALSO JUST "R". BUT THE USER CAN DO EVERYTHING IN THE SUBFOLDERS!!!

Large drives (2TB) and Windows 7

I have 2 x64 systems running Windows 7. One Ultimate, one Professional.
On both, I have connected a BlackX SATA drive device to read SATA drives. Using a 1TB drive works fine. However if I put a WD 2TB, Green Caviar drive in the device, Windows sees it in Device Manager as a USB storage device, but fails to start it. It appears with a yellow question mark, and I cannot get it to be read.
Any ideas on the issue?

Given you are using x64 versions of Windows 7, your OS is fine for UEFI boot
if you are using an older MBR based machine, you can still use GPT partitioned disks as secondary storage devices.
the MBR limitation only applies to the system volume (boot)
my rig is UEFI so I can install Windows on any hard disk available, assuming I use the x64 DVD

Lenovo G550 Wi-Fi driver complaint and Windows 8.1 porting

It's my first message on this board and I hope that I've got the right place to post in, as I've seen other subjects regarding the g550 on this board.
I've read the threads regarding using Windows 8 and it's drivers, and also the problems with the wi-fi driver - it's incapability of delivering good service - problems with a "weak signal".
Let me put it this way:
1. Right now I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and as my wi-fi driver I use the one the system provided when I installed it, that is :
So far, this is the best wi-fi driver available, which gets me the best network discovery( I see about 10 available wi-fi networks using this).
2. When installing the driver provided on the Lenovo Driver Site, which is broadcom 32-bit/64-bit combined driver, the number of networks which I can connect to via wi-fi decreases from 10 to only 2 networks, one of them being from my nearby router! This is inacceptable in my opinion! Now, the network speed may not differ to much, but the driver clearly lacks some functionality, since it can only see 2 instead of 10 networks - from the same location!
Now, for Windows 7 x64 things are good, I just stick to the windows provided driver ( 4.176.75.21) and I can use the wi-fi with no problems everywhere, at a good rate of functionality and performance!
My problems lie right now when changing to Windows 8 64-bit version, more precissely 8.1. I have done some experiments with this, and aside from the wi-fi problem, which I can no longer correct, all seems to be fine and I am quite happy with how my sistem runs on win8 64-bit.
The problem:
a) When running with the Win8 provided driver, the networks are few, just as using the lenovo driver, or even worse - only one network available - that from my router - located 100cm near my laptop! No other networks available... VERY BAD.
b) When installing the same win7 32/64 bit driver on win8, which actually works without compatibility problems - I get the same results as installing on the windows 7 configuration: 2 networks present, from the same location.
I have read on the forums, that it may be a chance that lenovo will provide windows 8 drivers for g550, but if they work the same as the current drivers for win7, they will be of no use, at the rate of performance provided. Can someone do something about this, i.e. provide better drivers, look into this problem?
I also tried to trick win8 and port the win7 64 driver to windows 8, by extracting the driver from the iso file or from windows 7 installed driver location ( got an .inf and a .sys file) but finally, I don't manage to install it in Windows 8, even with the "Have Disk..." option, where it ultimately tells me that it isn't a win8 64-bit supported driver. (No signed driver problems or messages appearing).
Now, as a solution for this, I would appreciate if someone could reccomend me one of the following:
1) either a way to make the lenovo driver work better, to configure it somehow, or to provide another driver for win 7-64 that also can be run on win 8 ( which it should be), that has good performance
2) provide me with a modality to "port" the current win7 driver which currently works the best with my Broadcom wi-fi to windows 8.1 64-bit.

Ok, I have solved my problems, this topic may be closed, as far as I'm concerned.
I will leave here the method in which I acted, so that any other person who faces the same problem will be aided by this guide.
Here is what I've done:
1) Ported the wireless driver from windows7 - that came on the original dvd - copied three files: two .inf files and one sys file, I think - can't remember exactly. Anyway, you can use some driver export software and select your driver and it will automatically detect and preserve the needed driver files. I have the files saved and if someone needs them, pm me, and I will tell you which files they are exactly, or send them.
2) Once I had the drivers from win7, I got into my windows 8.1 install, and accessed the "Advanced Startup Options", which has an option available to select some special features on the next restart -> you click on restart, and then the advanced features appear.
3) Select the 'disable driver signature verification' from the advanced startup options, once they show up, after the restat. This is needed in order to not get errors which won't allow you to install the win7 driver.
4) Just go to device manager, update driver, have disk option, select your .inf and there you go, just some prompts about the driver's lack of a signature, and you're ready, you can install the driver with no problem.
In my case, it worked perfectly!
I also did this with other win7 drivers, and it also worked.
Tip:
If you have problems and the drivers still don't work, check the .inf file, it may need some modifications.
See if it has an NTAMD4 6.2 section( that is for win8) and if it doesn't, or if that section contains no lines, just create it or update it by pasting the same lines that you see under the 6.0 or 6.1 sections also to the 6.2 section. Then, the have disk method will work, for installing your desired driver under windows 8.1.
I think this may be helpful for a lot of situations, not only for this specific driver and laptop model, but for most driver compatibility isssues users find.
