HP Envy Touchsmart 15-J004SA Laptop, intel core i7, 16GB

Hi,
So one evening i was doing my work on my desk the same as every other day and shut my computer down as normal.  I came back to my laptop the next day - which was still untouched in the same position. I open my lid, and find a crack all the way down my screen starting from the middle of the top, close to where the camera is situated, all the way down towards to bottom right corner of the screen.
I was absolutely astonished to find this as you can imagine, also after reading the forum i understand that others have experienced very similar problems with this topic and model of laptop.
I purchased my laptop from John Lewis as they promote and offer what falsly appeared to be a a great warranty.  I understand that this may be possibly out of their hands and lies with HP even though i have only had my laptop for a matter of 3 months.  However after waiting for it be sent off for a diagnosis i was told that the engineers at HP would be able to identify if there was an impact which caused the cracked screen (this is after i had assured that it had not be dropped or used forcfully of any kind, this is also in addition to it being in immaculate conditions anyway) causing severe inconvieneince as i am currently in the middle of exams and obviously being left without a laptop which i paid £800 for is just not acceptable.
A few days later i recieved a call stating no information of what impact was caused but whether i wanted to proceed with paying £437 for my screen to be fixed or if id like it to be returned to me broken.  When i asked John Lewis why it was classed as 'accidental damage' on my behalf, and also asked about where they found the impact had been made to the laptop, they were unable to answer my questions and they have now referred back to the engineers at HP for more information and an explanation as i was simply expected to just accept the fee for repairing a laptop which i had NOT damaged.
I think that all this comotion is completely inappropriate behaviour on the behalf of HP as they are clearly unable to stand behind their products, i have also found other posts on forums indicating similar problems, therefore it should be approached as a design fault or a manufacturing fault on the behalf of HP.  You cannot claim legally that someone has caused 'accidental damage' without proof to back up your statement.
I am not going to accept the £400 fee to fix my laptop when this is half of the overall price.
HP are letting me down with the trust i had built up with them as they are suppose to be such a reputable company hence why i chose their model of laptop to invest my money into.
I am completely and utterly dissapointed with the lack of support that i have recieved from HP in regards to a situation which is simply can not just be put down to accidental damage just because HP are unwilling to fork out the costs of products that they know are at fault.

  • HP Envy Touchsmart 15-j004sa keyboard skipping keys

    Hi,
I have just purchased a HP Envy Touchsmart 15-j004sa keyboard and am very happy with except for one thing. The keyboard keeps skipping keys.
This is most prominent around the centre of the keyboard. Where they keyboard seems to flex (is this normal?)
It appears that in order for a key to be registered as being pressed I need to press it directly in the centre of the key, which may be why it happens mostly with keys near the centre of the keyboard.
Is this something that can be fixed? I have seen reports of other users experiencing the same problem.
I dont want to return the laptop as it meets all my other requirements but this issue is just too frustrating to live with if it can not be resolved.
    Steve

    Hi TheFire,

  • Can too much memory lead to a kernel panic on a MacBook Pro? specs 2.4GHz intel core i7 16GB DDR3 RAM   late2011..My laptop began suffering from kernel panics 3 mos ago first noticed using public wifi. Gone thru apple support all the way to engineers

Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night  attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card.  The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit.  I would describe my use as "light"  based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support  and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted  3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix  graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue  given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble.  Does that make sense?  Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge.  Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

The RAM needs specs as shown below.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

    Hi,
I have checked the manual for the laptop series again and your laptop supports mSATA cache. It says 24GB but I believe that a 256GB mSATA SSD will work. You may also install an Operating System on it and use a common hard drive as a data storage. Browse this forum, there are many threads about TS 15-j000 series laptops and mSATA options.

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

    Hi,
Be sure that the battery is fully charge then try the following:
Hit the ESC key after power on to bring up the Start up Menu and then select System Diagnostics (F2).  Now run the battery test.
If the battery is OK then try the below suggestion:
Go to the Control Panel ----> Power Options and then select the HP Power Manager on the left column.  You can then select one of the power plans and see the effects on battery life.
Depending on the power plan selected and what applications your are running, you may not get more than one hour on battery.

  • I have a new 2.0GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro and my external firewire drive is causing the laptop to lock up

I have a new 2.0GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro and my external firewire drive is causing the computer to lock up. The drive seems to sleep and then never wakes and the laptop locks up. I've had this drive connected to an older 2.0 core duo macbook pro and a 3.0GHz quad core macpro with no issues. It's a ministack v3 drive, 2GBs, fw400+800, sata and usb. Any ideas? And can I stop the drive from going to sleep?
    Thanks.

Check with the drive's manufacturer to see if they might have a firmware update for the enclosure; it sounds like the enclosure's firmware isn't properly detecting the FireWire wakeup sequence.
Obviously this could also be a bug with the new MBP's firmware, so it wouldn't hurt to ask the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store; in particular, ask them to show you that the sleep/wakeup sequence on your MBP works with some other FireWire drive.

  • The Whine of Intel Core Duo (mobile) (& its users) in Laptops of all brands

Can I start by saying - OH NO, NOT ANOTHER WHINE THREAD.
But I had a search and this issue doesn't seem to be covered that much yet, and I feel it's important for us blighted by the whine to work out what to do about it. Apple has told me (and a lot of you) many different answers, "We recognise this issue and we're trying to fix it", "They've all got it! Stop complaining", "It's within spec, they're MEANT to do that", "Faster processor architectures generate more noise, there's nothing we can do", "You're mad.. there's no noise."
I think we can take these points as givens:
    • There are three noises commonly reported; moo (HDD-fixable) / buzz (Inverter-fixable) / whine (CPU-mysterious). We're dealing with whine here.
    • Not all MBPs are created equal, some whine, some don't.
    • AppleTech will feed you a line to get you to go away. Don't give up.
    • A whine is NOT within spec at these prices. (check consumer rights)
    • The whine is made by hardware vibration of some sort, this can be affected by software, but the software does not generate it (ie. it doesn't come out of the speakers).
    • When running XP, for 99% of people the whine disappears.
    • The whine seems to be related to battery power as well. Most people experience a louder whine when using (or charging) the battery.
So in a roundabout way I come to this - Does anyone know of other laptops using Intel Core Duos and causing a whine noise? In my opinion this is unlikely as the whine disappears in XP, but it would be good to know if it is happening anywhere else. If you know of any other 'whiners', please post a link to where you found out about it and the name of the model doing it.
If other models do it, it would seem to indicate defective processors (which lends credence to Apple's "it's a problem with newer, faster processors" line), and it ain't really Apple's fault - but they'll still need fixed. If Apples only do it, then we should all shout at Apple for lying to us until we get ours fixed/replaced.
My laptop is being picked up in two days to be 'repaired' so we'll see what happens then. According to AppleTech I'll get a report on any repairs done to it, so I'll post again with what repairs were carried out and what effect they had when it comes back.
    MacBook Pro 1.83GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.5GB RAM, 80GB

Hey LanEvoVIII... (Have you ever heard one of the defective MBPs in real life? If you feel the need to reply to this post, answer that question, although it would be infinitely preferable if you just removed yourself.)
Technology is not perfect, I know that. But for the amount of money you pay for Apple technology it should be better than this. And perhaps I wouldn't have bought a computer if I'd known that it makes noises like this.. unfortunately not mentioned anywhere by Apple, only on these forums where you-who-knows-best says we shouldn't talk about it.
Also you numpty, the point of all of this is we're trying to use the return policies and hardware warranties and gettin the runaround by Apple. This is another reason why people are unhappy - not so much the problem, more the fact about it's resolution (or lack of).
So how's about this? shut yer face. I'm aware of the irony of whining about a whine. You're so smart and funny referencing the same lil joke I made at the beginning of the post. What a smart smart human you are. Go on, give yourself a wee pat on the back for being so good and understanding the nature of technology so well. Go on, do it. There, doesn't that feel nice? Now go take your smug sense of self-satisfaction to some other thread and let us try and sort this out so that it doesn't drag on any longer.
Natsus, well said, sorry but I couldn't keep such a nice calm head about it as you. I know things are better if we all stay civil to each other. After so much trouble with this issue I ain't got much patience left, especially for people like "LanEvoVIII".

  • Fix for Envy TouchSmart 15-j078ca (or any other laptop) sound not working

If you are having problems with the sound on your Envy 15 laptop (speaker/headphone jack not working), there is a straightforward way to fix your problems.
First go through these simple steps (they could very well save you some time if they work):
    1) Update your drivers! Seriously, this is one of the top fixes for problems on PCs. If you haven't updated your drivers, search for "Check for Updates" and click that result (you can search using the Charm; the result will be under settings). If you have, read on.
    2) Check to see if your audio device is enabled. On your desktop, right-click the Speakers icon and go to Playback devices. Set audio devices to default (like headsets and speakers) on by rightclicking them and selecting "Set as default". This way, they will work when plugged in, and when taken out, the system will default to other available sound sources.
If your chosen device is not present, right click in the open space and check "Show Disabled Devices". Now, you can rightclick a device and Enable it, then going through the same process as above to set them as default.
    3) If your devices are enabled and plugged in, try the Windows Troubleshooter. Press the Windows key to bring up the Windows 8 interface (or the Start Menu in Win7) and type "Troubleshooting". Select it from the Settings section on the right side, then go to "Troubleshoot audio playback" under Hardware and Sound. Run the troubleshooter
If none of these methods work, follow the instructions in this excellent post, but use the changes below:
    1) Use the audio driver specifically for this laptop model (or the driver that works for your model. Enter your product name under Drivers and Downloads on this page if you are American, or this page if you are Canadian. The driver will be under Audio).
    2) Remove both the AC adapter and  the battery before performing the hard reset, then hold down only the power button for 15 seconds (or follow the instructions here if the battery is fixed in place).
    3) Press Escape repeatedly on boot-up until you get the option to use the BIOS menu.
Hopefully this helps, I know it helped me! Remember to give Kudos to the post linked if it helped you.
