HP Envy Touchsmart 15-j063cl Microprocessor Upgrade

I was looking into upgrading the microprocessor for my HP Envy Touchsmart 15 Notebook PC 15-j063cl from the original stock Intel 4th generation Core i7-4700MQ to either a i7-4910MQ or a i7-4940MX, but I ran into an issue,  which was if I could even replace the microprocessor in the first place. The product specifications page on the HP website did not provide any information concerning whether the Envy would allow a microprocessor upgrade. But when I checked the online manual (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03895137&lc=en&product=54471... The title of the manual is the maintanance and service guide.
it said that the processor could be removed and replaced. To double check this I went and asked a technician through chat, but he told me that the motherboard had an integrated processor, which contradicted what the manual said. I think this is wrong because the only components of the motherboard that are integrated are the video and the Intel HD 4600 chipset, and based off of what the manual says I should be able to change my microprocessor. Basically, I just wanted to know I my processor in my computer could be removed and replaced with another compatible processor.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
The cpu should be replaceable. However, the price will be extremely high and perhaps the same as for the laptop. I have seen a similar laptop with a Core i7-4900QM on ebay for around £500 and the cheapest genuine (not ES or QS) cpu for around £415.

  • Need the detailed specs of HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j063cl for changing the harddisk

    hi,
I want to know the detailed specs of my computer which I bought from Costco. For example, I want to know the type of harddish interface is SATA II or SATA III, because I want to change a HDD to SSD. But I cannot find the product specs in your website. My product number is E3S19UA#ABA.
And Could I use the mSATA SSD? Because I saw there is a interface on the board but no specs which releases on the HP product website.
    Thank you

  • Msata HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j003ed windows 8.1

    Hi,
I have a Envy TouchSmart 15-j003ed wiht an msata slot. It has windows 8.1. When i put in the msata card, my laptop wont start up. I can see the drive in the bios. It look like an issue from windows 8.1. Can that be the problem?

I am facing the same issue with a HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j063cl, Windows 8.1, fully patched.
Just installing the new unformatted mSATA SSD prevents Windows 8.1 from starting correctly.
When I remove the SSD, everything is back to normal.

A few questions I think the technical team can confirm and answer for me:
    1.   CPU soldered in or upradeable with aftermarket CPU purchase? This is Intel i7 4700
    2.  Is GPU upgradeable with aftermarket GPU?  This one is 470M
    3.  Possibility of installing an additional SSD (one to boot), and HDD for a performance/storage configuration (not mSSD).
-Use of drive caddy or something a long these lines e.g. where mSata, or DVD drives can both be swapped for a drive caddy.
    Thanks.

The CPU is not soldered in place but you are going to find that there is not a lot of improvement possible. That is a 4th gen i7 processor and even if you could get one a tick or 2 faster the price would be astronomical not to mention you would void the warranty. Not worth it.
No GPU upgrade is possible. The video is on a chip soldered to the board.
Yes, the laptop has a second hard drive bay and you can get an SSD (regular full sized) to put in the first bay to use as a boot drive. This will speed it up tremendously such that you will not want to upgrade the CPU any more.
Here is the caddy you need:

  • After upgrade to Win 10 ENVY TouchSmart 15-j001tx Notebook PC display doesn't respond to touch

I just upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 and after I did, my touch screen doesn't respond or work.  I basically have a non-touch display... ugh I've searched this forum and the hp support for possible drivers but don't see anything.  I've even tried the Win 10 Drivers Update process with no success. Any suggestions?

    Hi ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j001tx Notebook and the Touch display doesn't respond to touch after a Windows 10 update. If your computer is having problems finding and installing operating system updates, try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix the problem. Here is a document that shows how to update drivers that are not working correctly with Windows 10. Here is a link to your driver page. I would try the section on Driver -Chipsets. Intel Management Engine Interface Driver should help. Restart the Notebook after the install. I hope something here helps you. Thanks.

  • HP ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Ed. Upgrades/Modifications

    Hello All,
My next laptop will most likly be the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition with Windows 8 Professional. However I have several questions before I purchase this machine. I hope the knowledge base here can help.
    1) Is it possible to reconfigure the laptop to use the mSATA SSD hard drive acceleration cache as the primary boot drive?
    2) The ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition can be optioned with a 24GB mSATA SSD. What is the maximum memory capacity this laptop will recognize? ie, 64Gb, 128Gb, 256GB....
    3) When customizing the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition through HP's Customize and Buy, why am I limited to 8Gb of memory when selecting 24Gb mSATA Acceleration Cache?
    4) Is there a limit to the memory capacity of HHDs and SSDs the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition is capable of recognizing?
    5) The ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition comes with two drive bays. What are the physical limits for hard drives in the bays? Specifically, will 15mm 2.5" HDDs fit?
    6) If I purchase the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition with an empty 2nd HDD bay, will I need to purchase additional adaptors and/or cables in the future to attach a second HDD?
I do apologize for so many questions however if I'm going to pay more than $1200 for a laptop I need to ask a few. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.
For those interested this possible future buy is replacing an 8 year old HP Pavilion ZV-6130us Windows XP Pro SP3 with 2Gb RAM, a 256Gb primary HDD and a 2nd 1Tb HDD in the optical drive bay. The only failures in 8 years was one cooling fan 2-3 years ago and the optical drive 4 years ago. This HP has been good to me.
    Again, Thanks.

  • How Many Memory Modules (1 or 2) Come Pre-Installed in HP Envy Touchsmart m7-j120dx?

I know my HP Envy Touchsmart m7-j120dx came preinstalled with 8GB of RAM.  I purchased it last year from Best Buy.  Haven't taken the back off of the laptop just yet and it's at home while I'm at work, but wanted to see if anyone can verify *how* the standard 8GB of RAM is in there at present?  Two 4GB memory modules or a single 8GB memory module?
I'm trying to place an order online this afternoon to upgrade the laptop to 16GB of RAM and I'd like to know if I need to order two 8GB memory modules or just a single 8GB memory module, depending on exactly how many memory modules are in the laptop at present to make the existing 8GB of RAM I'm running.
Thanks if anyone knows the answer to this.

    Okay, one more question...
The memory in my laptop came pre-stalled with 8GB of it, with the characteristics of 1600Mhz and DDR3L PC3-12800.
Replacement memory (16GB) recommended by Crucial.com for my system has 1866Mhz instead of 1600Mhz, and is DDR3L PC3-14900.
What was recommended has of course slightly higher specs of the memory than what's currently running in my system for an additional $23 over just replacing the memory with 16GB of RAM having the identical 1600Mhz and DDR3L PC3-12800 specs.
Can my HP Envy TouchSmart m7-j120dx actually do anything as far as increased performance in going with the 1866Mhz and DDR3L PC3-14900 memory or would my laptop continue to "dumb the memory down" to 1600Mhz and DDR3L PC3-12800 specs and not be able to utilize the enhanced specs of 1866Mhz and DDR3L PC3-14900?
Just trying to spend my money wisely.  Thanks for any additional clarification.

  • HP Envy Touchsmart 15 finger print reader not working

Hello, I've had my HP Envy touchsmart 15 for little under a month now and it's been going great until yesterday and today, the finger print reader hardware has started acting up.I log into my account fine and then when I leave my laptop for a little bit, I then return to log in and it won't let me use the finger print reader, it doesn't flash red or white, it just stops working. So I then try to log in using my password but I can't because it's saying my finger print is not recognised and keeps flicking bad and forth to that message. So basically it seems to think I'm rubbing my finger over it when i'm not even when the lights aren't flashing or anything and to solve this I have to power it off with the power button, which is not ideal at all. This is a problem, any help?

I've had this issue on and off with my laptop, as well. It has persisted through Windows 8, 8.1, and even started up again after upgrading to Windows 10 this week. I've also done the Simple Pass uninstall/reinstall thing, as well as used updated versions of such with the problem recurring. I reloaded a fresh install of Windows 8.1 earlier this year, only to have the problem persist. This week, I decided to forgo the HP software entirely and start using the Windows Hello feature that allows Windows to natively access the fingerprint reader without any other software required. Here's what I have figured out:The issue seems to be caused by the activation of a power saving profile at shuts down the fingerprint reader out of perceived conservation. Disabling this feature seems to have wholly rectified the issue.Windows 10 has installed the most recent Validity Sensors driver for the device, and it seems to work well. Here's how I fixed it, which should work for you:At the risk of shilling for Microsoft, run all the Windows Updates needed to get your PC to prompt an update to Windows 10. (The HP software seems to be at least partly to blame, and I hated the latest iteration of Simple Pass.) The Windows Hello feature should work well, as this device is supported. All instructions below assume you have installed Windows 10.Before continuing, uninstall HP Simple Pass from the control panel or through the new Windows 10 applications window (in Settings). If you have the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, right-click it and select Properties to open the System window. Then, select "Device Manager" from the upper left column of the System window.  (If you don't have the icon on your desktop, type "device manager into the search/Cortana dialog on the Windows taskbar, and select the top/highlighted result.)In the Device Manager window, click on the small right-carat next to the "Biometric Devices" entry.Right-click on the Validity Sensors entry, and select Properties to bring up a device properties window.First, select the Power Management tab at the top of the dialog. DESELECT the checkbox marked, "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."Next, select the Driver tab. Click on the Disable button near the bottom of the dialog.Press OK.Again, right-click on the Validity Sensors entry, and select Properties to bring up a device properties window.Again, navigate to the Driver tab. This time, select the Enable button (where the disable button was previously).  Press OK to close the dialog. (Your fingerprint sensor should flash a couple of times, but don't worry if it doesn't.)Close all of the windows you have opened.Open the Start Menu and select Settings.Click on Accounts at the far right side of the window.Click on Sign-in options in the left-side list.Under the Windows Hello heading, follow the step it gives to set up your fingerprint reader.Since doing so, I have had no further problems with the fingerprint reader. It seems to work reliably, but I'll update this post if I run into any issues. Good luck!

Yes, this laptop supports Intel 7260AC wireless cards. I think that the whitelist is not there anymore. If you browse further this forum you can find threads with users confirming the chip is compatible and working well.

  • HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook. I accidentally deleted my audio.

    Product/Model: HP ENVY TouchSmart 4-1115dx
    3rd generation Intel Core i5-3317U
I was cleaning up my laptop by uninstalling things from the control panel, and I accidentally uninstalled my audio drivers and everything that has to do with audio. I tried to exit out, knowing that I pressed the wrong thing to uninstall, but it wouldn’t let me exit or press cancel. So now in the bottom right side on the desktop layout on the audio icon it says: No Audio Output Device is installed. It also has an X circled in red that appears on the icon. In addition when I go to the HP Utility Center, my Beats Audio icon doesn’t appear. When I go to the troubleshooting report for playing audio it states:
     Check audio device
Issue not present There might be a problem with your audio device.
One or more audio service isn't running
Issue not present Both the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services must be running for audio to work correctly. Atleast one of these services isn't running.
I would very much appreciate it if I could somehow re-install my audio back! It’s essential.

  • Cannot detect any wireless networks on my HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 j120dx

    Hello,
My laptop won't pick up any wireless networks at all - I'm having what seems like a few different problems:
    1.  Because the laptop won't pick up any wireless networks, I can't of course connect to the internet without using my ethernet cable.
    2.  When I try to turn my adapter on using the F12 key, all it does is toggle airplane mode - which isn't going to help me connect to the internet.
    3.  When I go to 'Network' under PC Settings, I can toggle airplane mode but the bluetooth is greyed out and can't be toggled and it doesn't even give me an option to turn back on my wifi adapter.
    4.  When I went into the Network and Sharing Center to enable the adapter that way under 'Change Adapter Settings', I couldn't even see the adapter listed there.  All it showed was Ethernet and Hamachi because I use LogMeIn Hamachi on my computer.
By this point, I was like "Oh, great - the adapter might somehow not even be there even though it was last night," (I was online wirelessly the night before) so I went into the device manager and then expanded Network Adapters I only saw the same two Ethernet and LogMeIn adapters.
    5.  So next, I tried downloading the adapter - but the problem is, I have no idea what kind my laptop is supposed to have.  Going to the download drivers section in the support area of the hp website, I found many options and none of them seemed to work.  I also tried redownloading the Wireless Button Driver (whatever that's called) and that didn't work.
    5.  I even tried doing a system restore to a point of about a week ago - this also did not solve my problem because the same things were happening and the same things I tried above still are not solving the problem either.
I know countless other people have had the same problem(s) mentioned above (simple Google search told me that) with their HP ENVY Notebook PCs, so I'm hoping that someone can help me and finally solve this problem for me.
The model  is HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 j120dx, the model number is E8A11UA#ABA, and my computer is running Windows 8.1 64-bit.
    On another note, here's the names of the only 2 adapters that show up in my device manager list (one is for LogMeIn Hamachi);
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (Ethernet)
LogMeIn Hamachi Virtual Ethernet Adapter (Hamachi)
The wireless was working fine before with Hamachi installed, so I doubt that has any significance.
If there's any other information you need that I did not mention above, feel free to ask me.  I look forward to someone replying as soon as possible and being able to find a solution to this problem for me!
EDIT: One other thing I should mention is that the wifi in my location is working fine for every other device I try (phone, gaming console, other people's laptops/desktops, etc.

    Hello dginther,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand wireless is not working properly. If the issue just began occurring, I would perform a system restore. I want you to bring the computer back to the earliest restore point possible, in an attempt to dodge whatever caused the issue. Here is a document on how to perform a System Restore: System Restore
Next, please try the steps in this HP document: Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection (Windows 8)
These steps should be enough to resolve the issue. If not, you can try a manual reinstall of the driver:
    1. Go into Device Manager, then Network adapters.
    2. Right-click on the wireless driver, and select "Uninstall".
    3. Restart the computer. This will force the driver to reinstall itself.
Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting. Thanks!
    Mario

  • HP Envy Touchsmart 15-J104sa Memory Card Reader not working

I took delivery of an HP Envy Touchsmart 15-J104sa running Windows 8.1 this week and the internal memory card reader isn't working. It doesn't recognise any SD cards (I've tried more than one) and continues as if nothing has been inserted; showing no error messages. All of the cards work on my previous HP laptop. The only way to get the laptop to show an inserted SD card is to run the driver update software (http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63001-63500/sp63415.exe) every time an SD card is inserted; this must be done with the card in the reader. If the software is run and then the card is inserted nothing happens. If the card is ejected and then re-inserted (or a new card inserted) it isn't recognised and the process has to be restarted and the driver reinstalled even though nothing has changed.
Can somebody please help me with this issue or I will have to return the laptop to HP. I do a lot of photography so being able to read an SD card quickly and reliably is extremely important for me; it's not a problem I expected from a brand new laptop straight out of the box.
    Thank you all.

Unfortunately non of the driver updates solved the problem but a BIOS update through the HP Support application seems to have remedied the issue. Whilst I appreciate there were no specific drivers available I find it hard to accept that HP should be able to release a model where they know the hardware will not be fully supported by the OS and in this case not function.
