HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j000

Good morning.
I just received my new laptop, with 256 SSD & 1 T hard drive.
My question is whether I can replace the 256 SSD with 1 T SSD 2,5" ?
Reason is that having 2 drives of 1 T each, I can make regular and frequent cloning from C to D, so if something goes wrong
I can just replace the C (SSD) with the D (Normal hard drive) and be back in business at a snap (am I a dreamer ?).
I already use my old laptop with 2 X 516 Gb drives and use to clone each of them on equal capacity external drives every week. However since I do not really need more than few hundred Gbs for both Windows and storage, I just want to be able
to clone from C to D instead of using external drives for cloning.
I just saw that mSSD and 2,5" SSD are not physically the same. However I also see an adaptor (please see the link)
that may be used to accommodate a higher mSSD (1 T) and then placed in the socket of the mSSD in the laptop.
Unless of course the socket in the laptop is restricting the use of mSSD only.
http://www.amazon.com/Syba-mSATA-2-5-Inch-Adapter-SY-ADA40050/dp/B007PPZ2I8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics...
Thanks in advance for any comment on my question.
Have a blessed day.
Antonios

That model is so new there is no Service Manual the describes it. Officially, the Touchsmart 15t-j000 only supports a 24 gig mSSD as an acceleration cache and the mSSD slot could not be the boot drive if a regular hard drive is also installed. See page 5 of the Manual here:
Manual
The prior limit was implemented in the BIOS and there were a lot of people asking HP to make the mSSD the boot drive and now they have apparently complied. They also used to not sell an mSSD on models with 12 or 16 gigs of RAM and that is obviously no longer the case.
If you want to protect your data simply make a 240 gig partition on the 1 TB drive and use backup software like Acronis or even Windows Backup and run a regular backup to that partition of the main drive. If the mSATA dies you can stick in another mSATA mSSD, boot the system from a utility disk and copy the contents of the backup partition back onto the new mSSD.  If you put in a 1 TB mSSD (which is going to cost an arm and a leg) I guess you would use the whole mechanical drive as a backup location but the principle would be the same. As long as you have an active backup image on the mechanical drive you should be fine. I would not buy a second mSSD just on the very remote chance the first one is going to go bad.
I believe your model also has RAID ability and you could set up a 1 TB mSSD and the 1 TB mechanical drive in a RAID-1 (mirror) but boot from the mSSD and if it goes bad just remove the mSSD and set the machine to boot from the mechanical drive, which would be slower but would give you zero downtime. If you create the RAID-1 array it would mean reinstalling the operating system onto the array.

Press the Power button and then immediately press the ESC key on the upper left of your keyboard, about once per second. You will soon see a Recovery screen menu that instructs you to press the F10 button to go directly to your BIOS menu. Pressing the ESC key is easy to remember; that way, you don't have to memorize the other F button choices. Easy! Good luck!

    Hi,
There will be a common 2.5" hard drive or a hybrid which means that you should be able to replace it by a solid state drive as these are manufactured in the same sizes as common hard drives (7mm, 9.5mm, 12.5mm etc..). Perhaps some manufacturers make only 9.5 or 12.5mm drives but I don't think there will be a 7mm hdd anyway.

  • HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j000 Quad Edition Notebook PC - MEMORY TYPE

    Hello,
I ordered this PC with 8GB DDR3 System Memory (1 Dimm).  I want to purchase 1 more 8GB stick to max out the memory but I'm not sure what type to get?  I would have added it when I built it but for some reason it wouldn't allow me to since I selected the 24GB mSSD option.  This was the error message:
Selection caused conflict24GB Solid State Hard Drive Acceleration Cache requires purchase of 4GB, 6GB or 8GB System Memory. Update Memory or Hard Drive Acceleration Cache .
    Please help and thanks!

I guess the 24GB mSDD cache is used to store both windows 8 and the data from memory during sleep or hiberbnation for fast boot and instant on purpose. 16GB is used to store windows 8 and 8GB is used to store memory data. If memory is 16GB, the mSSD cache should be at least 32GB. If you upgrade mSSD to 32GB, it should be OK.

  • Envy TouchSmart 17t-j000 Quad Memory Card Reader

My Envy TouchSmart 17t-j000 Quad memory card reader does not work.  Notebook is only about six months old and I tried out a memory stick for the first time yesterday and nothing happened.  The memory stick works fine in another computer.  When I plug the memory stick in there is no AutoPlay window and it is not listed in This PC window.  In Device Manager I do not see the card reader listed in USB controllers and Disk drives.  I do see listed in Device Manager in Memory technology devices a Realtek PCIE CardReader.  It is enabled and has the latest driver update.  I have tried shutting down, disconnected power cord, removed battery, reversed procedure, and restarting notebook with the memory stick installed, still nothing.  This Envy came with Windows 8 and I updated to 8.1.  Also, all four USB ports work.  System diagnostics test was performed and everything passed.  Should I try to uninstall and re-install the Realtek PCIE CardReader?  Thanks to anyone that can help?

  • HP ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Ed. Upgrades/Modifications

    Hello All,
My next laptop will most likly be the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition with Windows 8 Professional. However I have several questions before I purchase this machine. I hope the knowledge base here can help.
    1) Is it possible to reconfigure the laptop to use the mSATA SSD hard drive acceleration cache as the primary boot drive?
    2) The ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition can be optioned with a 24GB mSATA SSD. What is the maximum memory capacity this laptop will recognize? ie, 64Gb, 128Gb, 256GB....
    3) When customizing the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition through HP's Customize and Buy, why am I limited to 8Gb of memory when selecting 24Gb mSATA Acceleration Cache?
    4) Is there a limit to the memory capacity of HHDs and SSDs the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition is capable of recognizing?
    5) The ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition comes with two drive bays. What are the physical limits for hard drives in the bays? Specifically, will 15mm 2.5" HDDs fit?
    6) If I purchase the ENVY TouchSmart 17T-j000 Quad Edition with an empty 2nd HDD bay, will I need to purchase additional adaptors and/or cables in the future to attach a second HDD?
I do apologize for so many questions however if I'm going to pay more than $1200 for a laptop I need to ask a few. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.
For those interested this possible future buy is replacing an 8 year old HP Pavilion ZV-6130us Windows XP Pro SP3 with 2Gb RAM, a 256Gb primary HDD and a 2nd 1Tb HDD in the optical drive bay. The only failures in 8 years was one cooling fan 2-3 years ago and the optical drive 4 years ago. This HP has been good to me.
    Again, Thanks.

  • ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition mSSD cache & Ram options

    Good day all,
I've ordered the ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Quad Edition from HP directly and during the configuration, it was mentioned that I could not configure the notebook with both the 24Gb mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache AND 16Gb of Ram. I wondered if it was a memory slot usage issue but I can configure with either 2x4Gb or 1x8Gb with no warning. Is it possible to add another 8Gb (as I ordered it with 1x8Gb) after getting this laptop or would having the mSSD Cache actually prohibit this?
    Thanks for any help offered.
    Richard
*not sure if it's of any consequence to the issue but the Hard Drive ordered for this system was a Hybrid.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

It is not a physical problem with blockage of the memory slot but having 16 gigs of RAM means the cache drive may not work right. The cache drive has to be able to store everything in memory and then certain other files and the HP designers have decided it would take a bigger cache drive to work right with more than 8 gigs of RAM.

Yes, this laptop supports Intel 7260AC wireless cards. I think that the whitelist is not there anymore. If you browse further this forum you can find threads with users confirming the chip is compatible and working well.

  • ENVY Touchsmart 15 J000 Series (J001TX) Optional mSATA slot for installing Windows?

    I wanted to ask
    1. whether we can install a mSATA drive of 60-120 GB in the mSATA slot and use it as the place to install Windows? Would it be like having a dual hard disc setup if windows is installed on the mSATA and the 5400 rpm HDD is formatted? I know this might affect the warranty but still i am curious.
    2. Also is any particular mSATA drive models whitelisted/blacklisted by HP?
    3. When we install a mSATA drive in the bay, does it affect the max RAM which we can use?
    4. What is the size of the mSATA drive that would fit in the slot available?
    5. Is the interface of the mSATA slot SATA II or SATA III?

    Hi,
Q1: Yes you can install Windows on a mSATA module on this laptop..
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/729085-envy-15t-j000-msata-ssd-hdd-fresh-install-msata-b...
I recommend to remove the hard drive if the how to doesn't say that. A mSATA module is compatible so I don't think it will affect the warranty.
Q2: Hard to answer this one but some guys already confirmed that Samsung PM830 256GB drives work with this series. Some other models also work, just search this forum..
Q3: The mSATA can be used as cache or a boot drive. If it's going to be used as cache it won't work with 12GB or more according to the manual for the laptop series. If it's going to be used as a boot drive there shouldn't be any limitation so you may use the max 16GB or so.
Q4: mSATA is a standard/interface/format so any mSATA SSD should fit the slot, the capacity doesn't matter.
Q5: As I said mSATA is an interface (slot), SATA II or III (speed) is a matter of the chipset on the motherboard. It's the same case like the typical SATA connection. The connectors and slots are the same but the speed is based by the chipset..

  • Queries related to envy touchsmart 15t j050us

Hi, I recently purchased an envy laptop and there are certain upgrades that I want to do, so want a little information related that.
    1. Is it possible to upgrade the keyboard to backlit keyboard?
    2. Since it doesn't have a discrete graphics card, playing games isn't smooth experience, can I upgrade the graphics to Nvidia discrete by replacing Intel.
    3. Can SSD be installed to fasten the system, also can we have both hdd and ssd in a laptop? Since ssd are expensive and of low capacity,I want to keep my 1 tb hard disk too.
I also hate that it doesn't support FHD, would've.loved the feature.

    Hi,
It's a t machine therefore very hard to know internally but in general:
    1. You need a new motherboard which has place for you to plug all the lights of the keyboard,
    2. No, the Intel chip is soldered to the motherboad and the motherboard has no place to a video card,
    3. Yes, you can replace the HDD by swapping it but no room to add an SSD.
    Regards.

    Hi Phoenix,
I think you might enjoy reading this article:
What is the Difference Between HDMI and DVI? Which is Better?
Below is a short article about each type of connection:  VGA, DVI, HDMI
Essentially, what you get, how much hassle you go through to understand and make a choice, is based on what you expect from the connection.  VGA is low-res, dependable, and has been around the longest of the three types.
Decide Between VGA, DVI, and HDMI for Your Monitor Connection
I have not had any problems with any monitor when trying to connect it to Windows 8 -- the underpinings to Windows 8 are built from Windows 7.  My experience:  If the Monitor will connect to one, it should work on the other.
Some issues I have had with monitor connections include:
Nvidia graphics on a Win7 machine that had to be down-reved to work with one monitor (circa 2010?)
Irritating issues with the screen aspect ratio on a monitor that is forced to be connected to a system with a different native resolution than that of the monitor -- Do-able, just ps-ant irritating
Switching from one system to another when the monitor is connected to two separate notebooks that are up and running at the same time -- the "switch" is more seemless on some monitors than with others
Note that none of these issues are "show stoppers" for my purposes:  I am not a gamer.

  • Envy 15t J000 Quad edition CTO BBV error?

HI everyone! I just got a envy 15t, and decided that I'd rather replace the standard hard drive with a SSD. I created recovery media (wasted 2 disks that failed to complete), and was going through the process of booting the SSD from the recovery media when I got "restoration Incomplete". It got through copying information from the 6 disks fine, and was (I think) in the process of installing drivers and the like, when it stopped. It gave me 3 options; save log, details, and retry. retry does nothing, as I insert the disk as instructed, but they fail to be recognized as recovery media. I've installed everything twice, and it failed twice, and the diagnostics on the computer return PASSED when run on the SSD.
The following is what came off the details page, with removal of time code. Help??!! HP phone Reps have no clue as to whats going on.
    ChkErrBB.CMD : Detect some error during PININST_BBV.
    check C:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootWarn.log
    or, check check C:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootMerge.log
Critical error condition was detected at BBV1...
Refer the following file if exists.
            - c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBootWarn.log
            - c:\system.sav\logs\BurnBoot.log
Switch to 2ndCap's WinPE and show [Recovery Manager]'s Incomplete dialog.
because RM's dialog can't appear on [Start] screen in Win 8 enviroment.
customer may not notice RM already shows error dialog.
There migt be unexpected reboot during BBV Clean or Last....
The process will cause CTO panic becuase the image might not be normal...

Hello, no I ended up just purchasing Windows 8 Pro and installing a fresh version on my HP Envy Touchsmart j053cl.
I installed a new SSD in the laptop and the recovery disks simply wouldn't get past the BBV error, even after I reset the default settings on the BIOS.
I spoke with HP support and they told me the recovery disks would not work with an SSD, which was really disappointing, as I've owned many HP laptops that have supported SSD easily. They also wouldn't send me a free new set of recovery disks because mine may have been broken.
I really love my Envy 15 and think HP should always keep the customer who wants to use SSD's in mind, as they are fairly common with users who own quad core Intel laptops. Thanks.

If it's more than 7mm will the SSD move inside it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The old HDD on your machine is a bit thicker but with at least 4 screws I don't think new SSD will floating around in the case. I actually put new SSD in one of my laptop (not HP) and no problem BUT I don't move this laptop around. If needed, blue tac may help.
    Regards.
