HP G4 lower edge of space bar doesnt respond

Hi...I have a HP G4 2235DX Windows 8 that I recently purchased from BestBuy...the complete lower edge of space bar does not work / respond.  Touching it in the middle or top edge, it works.  I swapped out a keyboard from a windows 7 G4, got the same results.
I do not have another laptop to actually try,......is this normal?  or is something still wrong?  If not a normal function, what could be up?
thanks,...
Steve

  • Lower Edge of Spacebar doesn't respond

    Hello
I have an HP Touchsmart Envy 15, and the spacebar doesn't seem to be functioning correctly.
60% of the surface on my spacebar does not respond, and the whole key doesn't respond until I press closer to the upper edge of the bar.
What do you suggest I should do?

    Anyone's facing the same problem?

  • Space Bar not responding during editting

Under normal circumstances when editting in the timeline, my reporters use the spacebar to play and pause/stop the timeline. There has been some issues of late where the space bar seems to not be working, and requires two or three pushes before it plays or pauses the video in the timeline. The video being rendered does not affect it one way or the other, and it is not constant. It can happen at any time, and often doesn't affect a reporter, or will affect a reporter non-stop (both occured today). For the record, yes I have checked the keyboard and it is not the problem. The spacebar works fine for normal use, its just PPro that has the problem.
Specs: I have four identical edit bays. Each has a Dual Core 2.5 Ghz Pentium  processor, 3.0 gbs of ram, a single sata drive split into two partitions  (system 30 gb and video 470 gb). I am running up to date PPro 5.0.2,  freshly installed on virgin drives. I have two of the bays with the most up to date 64 bit  manufacturer video and audio drivers, and two bays with Windows 7  automatically installed video and audio drivers. The problem is the same  in all four bays.
    Help?

Your problem is that your systems are below minimum requirements, with some serious setup faults.
    This is harsh:
    1. A single disk is below minimum requirements. You need at least two physical 7200 RPM SATA disks
    2. Never partition a disk. It will only increase wear and tear and slow down performance.
    3. You likely never tuned your system. Look here: Adobe Forums: Guide for installing and tuning a Vista... This also applies to Win7.
    4. Your dual core CPU is absolutely bare minimum for DV material, but anything more will grind to a halt.
    5. 3 GB RAM is not enough.
You are in for a serious upgrade of your systems.
First Harm, I do want to say thank you and that I realize you are trying to help. But, budget is a major issue, and the likelyhood of upgrading soon is non-existant. So what can we do to work within the specs I have? I had not done all of the steps in the tune up, but yes most of them I had, specifically I had not installed Ccleaner, and I had not turned off all of the windows add ons as yet - both will be fixed soon. Our editting needs are pretty minimal to be honest, which is part of why its so frustrating that PPro is being so cantankerous. Cut in and out of five or ten clips, add in a voice over track, and once in a great while a cross fade between two clips or fade out audio (using the pen tool), export to mpeg, and we're done. Our longest package is 4 minutes and that's most of a news block (segment between commercials - we have a 30 minutes news show, so you can imagine most are in the 1:30 to 2 minute range).
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Someone is sure to comment on that.  I wanted to jump in first and say that while the idea of using a single partitioned hard drive isn't a good one, doing so is highly unlikely to be the cause of this particular issue.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I knew about someone would say something eventually, but given that it works most of the time, and only freezes up occasionally, like you I find it unlikely that this is the issue. I'm not saying it won't contribute to it (I know it can). The sad part of all this is I can't get it to replicate the space bar freeze up for me, and while I experience it when I go into the bays for the reporters, I have no idea what they have done up until that point in order to troubleshoot what they are doing wrong. I can and have run an install at the same time as editting video and not had a single slow down whatsoever, while several reporters have issues running PPro and notepad. One is running her yahoo mail in IE, and I think that is one of the problems she runs into (given how resource hoggy IE can be - especially on yahoo's webmail interface), but that's one person, not all of them.

    - Turn the machine off, then turn it on again.
    - Check for breadcrumbs and other foreign objects under the space bar.
    - Check what happens with the on-screen keyboard (osk.exe).
    - Try an external USB keyboard.

  • The lower row of my iphone does not respond to tapping. i.e. texting; the space bar, return

The lower row of my iphone does not respond to tapping. i.e. texting; the space bar, return and number tabs and for phone; emergency, 0, and delete tabs.
I've updated my phone, turned it off and on, charged it. Nothing. Help!

Sounds like a hardware problem.  When you updated, that would have wiped the device and installed the latest iOS, thus pretty much eliminating a software issue.  You could try to restore as new, i.e. without your backup and see if it works factory fresh.  If still a problem, it's most likely a hardware issue.

  • Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard: Space Bar Issues

Depending on your typing style, you may need to change how you type for this keyboard to work properly. For example, many people type quickly and simply press keys on the edge rather than in the middle or top. For this reason, some keyboards have a larger spacebar, for example, so the wrist doesn’t need to turn in for the thumbs to reach the spacebar. Dell offers a keyboard for about $12 that has excellent ergonomic design:
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku= 310-8038
The only problem with the Dell keyboard above is that eventually (after about 6 months to a year) the key travel may become a little sticky. On the Apple keyboard, the spacebar does not descend to where the thumbs are naturally positioned, so the thumbs must move up to hit the spacebar squarely in the middle. This usually results on tapping on the bottom of the spacebar. With the new Apple keyboard, tapping on the bottom area of the spacebar produces erratic results. Just now, I pressed the space bar about 20 times on the bottom of the spacebar and that generated about 5 spaces (about 25% functional). So, it will be necessary to press the spacebar squarely in the (vertical) center or toward the top. Horizontally, the spacebar seems to work just fine as long as you are pressing it in the vertical middle or top.
The caps lock key has similar issues as those with the spacebar mentioned above. Perhaps this is because it is a longer key than the other keys. If you are accustom to pressing the caps lock key with your little finger, you may try to engage caps lock by pressing the bottom portion of the caps lock key. This will work about 70% of the time, but not 100% of the time.
I've posted more about this and other related keyboard issues here:
    http://web.mac.com/resourcesforlife/journal/writings/Entries/2007/8/21Apple_Aluminum_WiredKeyboard.html

Thanks for the great description of the spacebar problem. I've been trying to figure out a good way to describe it. Here's my take:
As you point out, the front edge of the spacebar sits too far up our thumbs, so it's located too close to the thumbnails, instead of having some portion sitting under our thumb knuckles, so less of our thumb is touching the spacebar along its lower half than would be desirable for a good hit. But this is a problem mostly caused by the short travel of the Aluminum keytops--I held a previous-generation Apple white keyboard up to the Aluminum keyboard, and there's very little difference in spacing of the keytops between the two keyboards--the bottom edge of the spacebar on the Aluminum keyboard sits only a tiny bit higher on my thumbs. What little difference there is, contributes to the spacebar problem, but it's the shorter travel of the Aluminum keytops that causes of most of the trouble for the spacebar. Hitting just the bottom edge of the earlier keyboard's spacebar is compensated for, because the earlier keyswitch design allows the keytops to travel further down than the Aluminum's, and it's this longer travel that allows the older keyboard's spacebar to actuate every time. With the Aluminum, your thumbs get stopped too early by the strip of aluminum below the spacebar, which sits at almost the same height as the top of the spacebar. At least Apple got the spacebar's cantelievering right, so you can hit either end of the spacebar and still register a keypress, even though there's only a single keyswitch in the middle.
Possibly owners could make some modification to the spacebar to reduce this problem--maybe applying some kind of adhesive layer to the top of the spacebar to make it taller, but that would probably wear down too fast. More advanced modifications would include cutting away the strip of aluminum that our thumbs hit, but I doubt too many people would want to do that. Maybe someone could manufacture a taller replacement spacebar, or one that's slightly taller just along its lower edge, so the letter keys just above the spacebar wouldn't get overhung by the spacebar, causing you to hit the top edge of the spacebar when you want to hit one of those keys.
I tried this theory, by cutting out some strips of Post-It notes, about a quarter-inch wide, and five sheets thick, along the whole length of the lower half of the spacebar, and it worked pretty well, but felt a little odd. A properly custom-designed spacebar would probably feel more natural.
I'm still trying to get used to the aluminum's shorter key travel, after typing on regular desktop keyboards for about 27 years. One nice thing about the shorter key travel is that it's quieter, and so it's less distracting to other people in the room--maybe Apple did this so their laptops would make less noise in a classroom or office meeting? It also makes it less likely to wake up someone sleeping in the same room. Also, the shorter key travel has been a lot less stressful on my fingertips--even halfway through the day typing on the previous keyboards, my fingers would sometimes start to hurt a little.

  • Sticky space bar - help!

I spilled OJ on my keyboard and though I got it wiped up immediately, the space bar is now kind of sticky. I've pulled the keyboard off but don't know if I can now pull the space bar off to clean it. I also don't know if I can use some type of alcohol or not. Any suggestions from those in the know would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!
    gtpoet

you can pull off the space bar, but do it carefully, as well as the plastic bits that actully clip the bar to the underlying pieces, there are two thin metal pins/rods clipped to the bar that hook under a couple of metal tabs - you don't want to bend/break them
start by lifting up the top edge of the bar, rotating it around an imaginary hinge along its lower edge, until the clips begin to release, then once the clips are all released slide it a little towards the front of the pb to free the metal pins from under the tabs
you can wash the pins/bar in soapy water and dry it with tissue, if there's sticky stuff on the switches or the rest of the assemble then remove it using damp paper towel or cotton bud, it might take several clean pieces to remove all the gunk
to replace the bar, slide it in from the from to get the larger pins under the tabs, then rotate it down to hook the other pins in, then line it up in the correct position and clip it back onto the switches

  • Space bar not working all to well

I had somert stuck under my spacebar so I though I'd just click it off and fix it. But when I came to click it back in place, itstoppedworking!!!
Everything in right, and all the plastic pieces are clicked down properly so when pressed, they lay flat, and the two metal bars are in the right place, but unless I press down quite firmly on the center of the space bar, it doesnt work. Which is annoying when your typing loads and having to stop between each word to stab at the thing with yer finger!
    Anyone had the same problem?

    King Josh wrote:
I went though the youtube vids, but I still had the same problem, but I've inadvertently come across a solution. Under the space bar are two metal bars. I took the one closest to the tracker pad completely out, and now its working like a treat! I didn't have a single time when writing this that it didn't work!
    Glad you got it working.
I better keep this metal bar incase is was important and its absence causes my space bar to combust or somert O.o
    Thanks for the help tkj
    No worries.

  • Sensitive space bar

I get double spaces often and have found that I can cause it to space even when lightly rubbing my finger across the space bar. How might I fix this problem other than have the entire keyboard replaced?

    John:
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse. Select the Keyboard tab. Check the Key Repeat Rate. Try a lower setting and see how it works.
    Good luck.

  • Unresponsive space bar

Hi. I originally removived the space bar from the computer in order to get dust and dirt out. After having reseated the space bar, it exhibits occasional unresponsive behavior when pressed on the right side. The left side seems to work well, but the right does not.
Interestingly, when I quickly press down with my left thumb, the space bar makes a click similar to the rest of the keys on the keyboard and similar to what the space bar used to sound like. When pressed similarly by my right thumb, there is no click, merely a dull noise and the space bar returns to its original position more slowly.
I suspect the problem might be related to the underlying white plastic pieces used to return the keys to their original position after being pressed. How do I remove these plastic pieces without damaging them? Are there any instructions/diagrams online for the installation of these pieces once they have been removed and cleaned or replaced?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Here's one thing you can check. The "domes" under the keys (multiple for the space bar) receives air, or rather sucks air through the holes on the backside of the keyboard. So, when you press a key, you actually press out some air on the backside of the keyboard. If, for some reason, one of the holes are covered with dust, tape or similar, it cannot take in air, so the key will actually stay down for a long while when pressed. This of course, is very annoying.
So, remove the keyboard from the laptop, and check that no holes on the back side look blocked - especially near the space bar. Try pressing on the spacebar, while the keyboard is removed. If the spacebar now works perfectly, something in the laptop blocks the hole (could the lack of clearance, also). In that case you could probably get warranty support on this - but placing a thin piece of sponge/low density cloth material under the specific hole, it will also fix it.
As for how to remove the plastic hinges - well, use a bit of force - but be careful not to break the small hinges. I'd recommend just leaving it in place though, and use isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip to clean the hinge.

  • Space Bar Issues

For the last several months I've noticed that my space bar when pressed won't respond unless I almost bang on it. I've tried cleaning under the key, and increading keyboard sensitivity via the system preferences. Does anyone have any other ideas that would help? It drives me crazy to have to double back and put spaces between words when I've done a substantial amount of typing. PLEASE HELP!!!

P.S. I'm not 100% sure my iBook has Mac OSX (10.4), it may be a little higher or lower. Unfortunately I'm not at my home computer right now to check.

    hi Shakira-
this could be caused by a software problem. when you get to your computer again find your install disks for the current operating system (make sure it is whatever it says in the system profiler) and run a disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. if this isn't helpful, then create a new user in system preferences > accounts by clicking the plus sign above the lock. test the keyboard in the new user to see if there is any difference. as well, try resetting the pmu on your ibook. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449. • Almost perfect the third time around; space bar...

Here's my short MacBook Pro story.
Got one, whine, sent back. They replaced it, got another one with a whine. This time they said they'd only repair it. I sent it for repair and they couldn't repair it so they replaced it. Third MacBook I get doesn't whine but it has this annoying issue.
On the right side of the space bar (the side I use most often, more like always) someone is wrong. It makes a 'squeek' sound when I press on it while typing and it doesn't feel firm when I press on it at all. Sounds like I need a new keyboard right? Problem is, this would be the third time I would be going without a computer in the last two months and every time I do this, I really lose productivity.
So, do I have any options? I really would like to solve this another way (physically myself, unlikely or could the keyboard be replaced at an Apple Store?)
    Thanks.

i am sorry you have had so many problems...
i have hd repairs at apple where they lost my hardware for months...
    they eventually made it right...
call support, complain loud enough to get a dispatcher and ask for freeies...
they say they will not.. but they will
regarding your keyboard... at least a straight swap is only a couple days.. a dispatcher will send you an airbill when they see the MBP scanned into FedEx's shipping system.. as long as it is on its way they can release a replacement..
since MBP's are shipping pretty quick these days you should only be down a couple days.... there is no reason for you to accept anything less
if they tell you otherwise, threaten to call the local news and tell them you want to return the unit if they will not accomadate you.. they will overnight the replacement and probably through some free RAM or an upgrade int he mix....
regarding the whine, I see this from time to whine. (sorry) ... basically, here is what I note.. most do whine lightly under low load... some louder than others.... the whine sometime disappears.... I would (if you get another that has a whine) relax and run quiet macbookpro or open photobooth for a month or two... then address the issue.. here is why.... wen you run XP.... MBPs are silent..... did you get that.. the software can correct the whine.. it is a power managment issue... apple is balming hardware.... but it is a hardware issue.. they WILL get it ironed out and then some day in the near future you will get a software update and whamo.... no whine
i would not send mine in if it whined and I would advise anyone that has a whiner to install XP.. see if it whines.... it won't.. call apple and tell the tech when you report the issue... if you send a report to apple using the software in your computer..... mention that XP's power managment does a better job on their hardware than they do....
lastly, i want to point out that intel has noted the noise issue when the processor is idle..and has a driver for the core duo that is newer than bootcamps... additionally, XPSP2 has a specific update for the core duo's power regulation you can download from MS.... they have more experience working on this hardware.. it makes sense they would have it figureed out a bit...
ok... really lastly, why am I the only one I ever hear that is completely convinced it is a software issue? I mean.. has ANYONE ever had a MBP that whined (not the screen noise reported) when running XP????
    anyone....
WHY IS APPLE NOT ADDRESSING IT THAT WAY????
*sorry to shout.. just hoping somebody at apple reads the thread and pays attention*
