HP G70-120EA upgrade HDD problem

I've been having problems with my notebook crashing. A test confirms it's a HDD problem. So I buy a replacement HDD exactly the same as before (WD Scorpio Blue) only this time 320GB. The original was 160GB.
I've fitted the new HDD and tried 3 times to reinstall the software using the Recovery discs. But it keeps failing to install the software properly.
Is the problem caused because the new HDD has a larger capacity or is it something else?
Your help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,
What is the error. Yesterday, I swapped HDD on one of my laptops from 160GB to 750GB w/o any problem. My suggestion is to check the BIOS and upgrade it.
Regards.

    Hi,
The specs shows only 3GB probably the original specs used 32 bit operating system therefore no point to install more than 4GB. Why only 3 because MANY users bought 4GB machines and kept asking why we had to pay 4 but could not use 4.  What is the version of the Operating system on your machine now ? May be it has 64bit OS now and that's is a good news, you don't have to looking for a RAM upgrade task.
    Regards.
ps. Actually the following link shows your machine can only have 4GB max. Which HP screen you are talking about ?

  • G70 120EA wont work with battery plugged in

    Hello,
I have a HP G70-120EA which, for all intents and purposes, works fine, except when it comes to the battery.
If the laptop is turned off and the battery is plugged in the lights etc are there to show power from the adapter and the battery light is on, but the machine will not physically start up.
With just the mains plugged in and no battery the machine works without a hitch.
I have also tried plugging the battery in once it has started booting (before windows) in the hope it might kickstart the machine, but it will automatically turn off.
The machine is out of warrenty now (well over a year out), so no hope of returning it to HP for repairs.
Any help or suggestions is welcome, I am pretty comfortable with carrying out basic internal repairs if that might be a problem that any of you recognise.

    Hi,
From your description it appears you've covered most of the troubleshooting described in this document:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00259897
I'd suggest taking a close look at the "Troubleshoot the battery" section and make sure you've covered it all, but if so, and it's still not working, it seems like it might be time to get a new battery.  This document shows you how to identify and order the correct replacement part:

  • New MBP 13" w/ Upgrade HDD/RAM question ??

Just received MacBook Pro 13" 2.26, along with larger HDD/RAM from 3rd party online retailer.
Question - Do I just upgrade HDD/RAM even before I start MBP for the first time? OR do I start MBP first do the registration, etc. THEN replace HDD/RAM afterwards?? Does it matter?
Also, using RESTORE disc on blank HDD will install EVERYTHING to factory default setting (apps, etc)??

I know it takes time but I would continue with the install just to make sure the stock HD is ok.
Yes, once you install your 3rd party HD you can use your install Disk. When you install your new hard drive you need to put in the install Disk and format your new HD before loading the install.
Here are the steps I use:
    1. Put in your install Disk (make sure it's the INSTALL DISK #1)
    2. Remove old HD and install new HD.
    3. Restart Computer and hold down the Option, Command, P, R keys all at the same time (this is known as resetting PRAM) until I hear 3 bong sounds...then release all keys. I would recommend if you haven't done this yet to practice.
    4. After I release the keys I turn OFF the computer by holding the down on the power button until the power goes off.
5 Press the power button and before the first bong press and HOLD the C key until I see the spinning spoke wheel...then release the C key.
6 Once booted to the install Disk #1 go to disk utilities and format the new HD drive using the GUID partition table.
    7. Start the install.

  • When I click on iPhoto icon I get a box that reads "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."  Whether I hit Quit or Upgrade the problem is not fixed.  Any suggestions?  Yes, I have tried Command Option iPhoto..no luck.

    Assuming iPhoto 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Hp g70 120ea & t9400 cpu

hi.  i have a hp g70 120ea. does anyone know if this motherboard will accept a t9400 cpu and if so, would i need to flash the bios? regards
    kris

    Hi, Kris:
The T9400 is supported. See Chapter 1, page 1-1, of the service manual below for the list of supported processors.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01573159.pdf
Looking at the BIOS release notes, I see no reason that you need to flash the BIOS just to install that processor.
You should be good to go.

  • Upgrade HDD - Satellite Pro 4270

Is it possible to upgrade HDD more than 6 GB? Thanks

    Hello
Unfortunately there is no public document about HDD upgrade but i presume that 10 or even 12 GB HDD should work well.

  • Satellite C665D - Second time the same HDD problem.

I have a C665D laptop. Eight months after i purchase it I got hdd problem (reallocated sector count -> value around 2000 !!).
So I send it to service, and got with new hard drive.
And now, after 7 months got the same problem, (hard drive fault).
So my questions is why it happen twice, this same fault?
Did somebody had this same problem?
Is any problem with this series of laptops?
Can I do something to prevent damage to the disk the next (third one)?
    Thank you for any help.

    Thank you for your reply.
    > Any HDD will die sooner or later
I understand this and agree with that, but what is the average of usage the HDD ?
My HDD seems to die very soon (power on 105 days 9 hours )
    > Also moving the notebook while HDD is in use would affect the HDD functionality.
I'm also understand this, but believe me or not, but I'm very careful when moving the laptop. That is why I don't understand why my disk is gone so quickly. From SMART table of HDD I could see that the value of G-sense error is only 14.
On my wife's laptop's HDD is perfekt, no bad sectors etc. and G-sense errors is over 300. No one is special careful with this laptop, using as normal way, and nothing happen with HDD.
    > By the way: HDD issues have nothing to do with the notebook series
I thought that may be in some way laptop itself is damaging (or not protecting) hard drive - is it possible ?
Or may be if not with laptop, there is some issue (problem) with this series of HDD?
    > ...tool called HDD protection utility.
Thank you for that. I didn't know about this kind of software. Will try it as well.

There was never a problem since you tried to upgrade from a pirated copy of Logic 9
Why did you even think this could go well?
I dont have any original packaging since i moved and i lost it.
Did you check Lost and Found?
I am in dire need as i run a studio.
Yet, you let your brother load a pirated copy of Logic 9.

    You really don't need help.
Why is it that when I see POSTS like these that the person registers the same day.

  • How thick is the 1tb upgraded hdd in the non-retina 15" MacBook Pro?

    Hi there.
Just wondering if the 1tb upgraded hdd in the non-retina 15" MacBook Pro is 9.5mm or 12.5mm thick?
I'm hoping to move this drive into the optical bay and use a 12.5mm drive that I already own in the main HDD bay.
I realise it's an expensive upgrade and I could buy a separate 9.5mm drive for less than half the price but I'd rather make use of a supplied 1tb drive than get rid of a 500gb drive that I'd have no use for.
    Appreciate your thoughts.
    Many thanks in advance.

  • 15" MPB - 160g PRM HDD upgrade HEAT problem?

My apologies if this has already been discussed....
I have just purchased the Hitachi 5k160 PRM HDD. Prior to installation, according to Temperature Monitor my idle CPU temp was 51-56c and the HDD senor was between 33-37c. After having the drive installed my idle CPU temp has risen 10c (64-70c) and the HDD temp varies from 41-44c. I know I'm just not getting it.
Should the installation of this HDD raise the temp of the entire unit that much?
I'm a little frustrated at the moment and would appreciate any insight.

    MacBook Pro & Dual 2.7 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I also just upgraded to the 160G PRM drive and frankly while my CPU temp might have risen a couple of degrees my HDD temp hasn't risen noticeably. I can't even scientifically say that my CPU temp really rose or how much but now that you mention it, it appears it might have risen a bit but not enough to worry me and I know the HDD temp hasn't risen significantly.
    I wouldn't worry about what you're seeing.

  • ITunes can't find existing files after upgrading HDD

What the subject says - I have a 2008 Mac Pro & iTunes 10.6.3. I just upgraded the HDD where iTunes lives, by copying the entire drive to the new one, then installing the new one in the same bay as the old one. Whenever I open iTunes, a few of my +/- 6K tracks show the (?). This happens to different tracks each time I open iTunes.
It's a pita to re-locate these every time I access iTunes. Is there any way to correct this problem without trashing all my playlists, album art, ratings, etc?
Pls help! It's taken a long time to build this library and I'd rather not have to start all over. I still need to edit then add about 40 LP vinyl albums to the library, and I don't want to continue adding them until this problem is solved.

Sorry. Found the answer myself. DUH! I needed to tell iTunes preferences that the iTunes folder was on the NEW HDD rather than the old one.

  • MBP 13" Screen Flickers and Freezes After Upgrading HDD

    Hi There,
I have seen on here and a few other forums that people are having issues with graphics cards or overheating that is making the MBP screen flicker and freeze.
Mine has been fine until yesterday when I installed a new Seagte 1tb HDD. It works ok, but every now and then the screen starts to flicker, half of it goes black and the system freezes. Sometimes it's just for a few minutes, but sometimes I need to do a hard reset by holden the power button down for 5 seconds.
    Here are the details:
    MBP 5,5 13" (2008 I think - Can't remember)
    Boot ROM Version:
    MBP55.00AC.B03
      SMC Version (system):
    1.47f2
    Version 10.6.8
    2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
8gb 1067 Mhz DDR3 (Just upgraded, but before the hard drive and no issues)
    1TB Seagate Momentus SATA HDD
As mentioned, I upgraded the RAM a week or so ago and it has been running fine. I put the new hard drive in last night and after a few hours, the flickering started.
I cloned the hard drive using SuperDuper and it all started up fine.
So far, I have verified and repaired permissions, checked SMART status and run a SMART Utility diagnostic. All comes back ok.
I cleared the PRAM and installed smcfan control as another forum with similar issues said it was a overheating problem and running the fan control program should fix it. I did that at 8am this morning and it has run great all day. Come 5.30pm, the flickering started and then it froze.. GREAT!!!!
It's so frustrating, I was really looking forward to having my MBP upgraded and running fast again.
Any ideas or tips would be very welcome.
    Thanks in advance.

set old HD. If problem will gone - you have weakened power supply or internal power converters. Yours new HD draw more power during spinup or something - so voltage on internal bus lowers and memory or videocard freaks.
5.30 PM looks like a time when there begins a lot of load on city energy grid - so voltage in wall socket goes a bit unstable, it may also add to problem.
if problem is gone when you are on battery power - its power supply. If it persists or get worse when on battery - its internal power convertors.

  • Second HDD problem HP DV8 1110ea

    Hi
I recently spilled coffee on my laptop and both of my HDD (2x320GB) went dead. I bought 2 new (1xSSD 120GB + 1xHDD 500GB) and the thing is that if i put both of them (SSD as primary and HDD as secondary) the HDD is not detected anywhere. Device Manager, BIOS, other HDD software doesn't detect it. BUT! the situation is different when I put the HDD as primary and SSD as secondary. Than everything works fine...
Is there a way to solve this ?
I want my SSD to be the primary so everything runs smooth (and it does run smooth)
I know that I can install Windows on the secondary drive (Primary-HDD, Secondary-SSD config) and I did but after sometime (win Update) it didn't want to detect the boot drive.... I tried this option several times and the result was the same.
    Any other solution ?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

OK. So I didn't fix it but I made a massive search on the net and found out that its the NEW BIOS that's causing the problem. Its not only me
Any idea how to downgrade or change or upgrade the BIOS ??
The BIOS flash tool from HP only upgrades the BIOS to my current version (upgrades huh )
     Solution Found:
    In the Driver Download Site
BIOS download has in the description a link to previous versions
Click it and Flash older BIOS
