HP G70-120EM - Memory Question - Max Capacity

Hi,
I have a HP G70-120EM laptop. I am looking to increase the memory capacity with a pair of matched modules, as big as possible.
Ive got:
1 x 1GB Hynix PC2-5300
1 x 2GB Transcend  PC2-5300
667 MHz
Now, the specification says memory max = 3GB, but can be up to PC2-6400 800Mhz.
I suspect that this 3GB cap is due to the laptop coing with vista 32bit, but ive now installed Windows 7 64bit.
So, whats the max the laptop can handle?
Can it take 2 x 2GB or 2 x 4GB? Or is it really limited to 3GB?
Im looking to put as much as possible in there at the maximum speed of PC2-6400.
Thanks in advance.

Huffer, Thanks for the reply.
Ive managed to source a document through this website.
HP G70 Notebook PC
Compaq Presario CQ70 Notebook PC
Maintenance and Service Guide
Document Part Number: 485462-001
September 2008
In this document on page 8 it says
Supports dual-channel memory
Supports up to 4 GB of system memory
Supports PC2-6400, 800-MHz, DDR2 and
PC2-5300, 667-MHz, DDR2
So i think ive found the answer i was looking for yet, what you have said contradicts this. I was planning 2 x 2GB of 800mhz memory running in dual channel.
Have you tried this and it did not work or was you speculating?
I was going to pay £70 for the sticks today, but if you know that it is not going to work then ill simply grab another transcend 2GB 667 module and leave it at that.
Thanks a lot.

my HP G70-120EM Laptop with a blueray player will not recognise blueray discs. Any idea what software update I need?

I also have this problem on an Envy 17 laptop with a HP DVDBD TS-TB23L drive that shows up as a BD-ROM.  It will play music and read data discs but not play BLURAY or DVD discs.  It is very disheartening to finid such a lack of support for any problems on HP machines and will make me question ever buy an HP device.  They seem to produce them at such a rate that they never bother when things go wrong as there is another being produced in the next five minutes.  At first I thought this was a problem with the drive but now I suspect it is a software problem they are not bothering to resolve.

  • HP G70-120EM Upgrades

    Hey there.
I bought a HP G70-120EM just over 2 years ago and its now its starting to just slow down.
It's been overhauled twice; once when I installed win7 and then again last Nov when I did a reinstall of 7. I use TuneUp Utilities to help improve my system as a whole; but its making no real difference.
I haven't upgraded it at all in terms of hardware.
So I was wondering what can be upgraded on it? Specifically can the gfx be upgraded, and can the processor/s be upgraded?

It ain't really worth it, but for the record, the graphics cannot be modified at all. The processor could be, but the cost would make it kind of pointless. Memory is a possible upgrade and a faster hard drive but any modern laptop should run pretty fast if the software is properly maintained. Clean up the startup routine; stop programs from running in the background. And it might be a good idea to try another clean install of Windows 7.

  • Max capacity of Mini SD for N80?

Hi there, can anyone tell me the max capacity the N80 can take please? I heard a 2Gb will work but would a 4Gb or larger? (although not available yet i don't think)? Many thanks ;o)

no, the point is your making a mistake.
nokia support the minisd format, it can fit in the phone and the phone can read it. the point you are failing to make is why can it not read every minisd card and why can it not read all capacities.
the phone cwill have trouble opening larger capacity cards as the software (symbian) cannot cope with it. we are only just seeing 4gb in the n91 - it will take some time for greater memory cards to be supported.
your point on cd rom is wrong, there are a number of different ISO standards, not all devices will play them. it is the same as dvd...
you may be better off saying my pc has a 144 dimm slot, therefore it should use all types of dimm together, be they ddr400 ddr800 or rdram.
you are also mistaken that nokia phones only work with nokia cards, they just tell you dont expect to get support when your card doesnt work. rufao is correct in saying this, if nokia dont make the card, and the card doesnt work (but the nokia one that came with it does) then why should they pat money to support it?
again, lets look at your point on sony, are they not about to release a hi-dvd format that only their players use and they support? are they not about to enter into a format war over blu-ray?
all in all patc, all your arguments are incorrect. nokia phones can read minisd cards, not all cards are compatible and this is why many third party sites offer a compatibility list.
for example, i have a 2gb minisd in my phone it works as the phone can handle that amount of memory. for my psp i bought a sandisk 4gb stick - it doesnt work..... so who do i blame

  • Memory question on Arch x86_64. 2x2048 MB = 3950 MB?

I have a naive memory question for some knowledgeable folks.  My machine has 2x2 Gb sticks which should total to 4096.  When I do a free -m under Arch, it's only showing 3950.  Is the remaining 146 reserved or..?
    $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 3950 422 3528 0 28 157
    -/+ buffers/cache: 236 3714
    Swap: 2000 0 2000

Thats a really good question and the result you get is normal as far as I know.
Part of it (a small part I believe) is used by the kernel, the rest of it, and this is where things are not so clear, is reserved as an agp apperture.
As far as I could tell (I have stumbled uppon that too) the problem seems to be that some bioses don't setup everything as they should.
The thing is that some devices can only handle 32bit addresses so their address is somewhere until the 4GB mark, because the bios doesn't setup the memory remapping correctly (sometimes the user has no way set anything related to memory remapping, this seems to be the case with some desktop boards and most notebooks/laptops). This memory remapping "problem" was anticipated and there are ways to properly handle that.
For some reason unknown to me (and most people that have stumbled upon this) many bioses don't setup (or allow the setup) of proper remapping. To add to the problem the kernel seems to reserve 128MB of agp aperture by default even if you don't have an agp card, this reserved address space falls in the first 4GB of addressing space therefore stealing you some memory.
I have tried to regain those MB, I have tried to recompile the kernel with a different config and I've tried several kernel boot parameters and the only thing I could regain was 64MB if I recall correctly. I can't find now what I have added to regain those 64MB, I didn't keep that option in the kernel line, 64MB were not worth the possibility of having problems later on.
I know its a pain to have that voice in the back of your head telling you that there is some memory that is being wasted, specially if you have tried a 32bit kernel with support for 64GB of address space and got 4050 MB of usable memory, but just leave it as it is, it's not worth the time and the trouble.

  • Memory Question "4x1 Gig or 2x2 Gig?" what is faster?

Memory Question "*4x1 Gig or 2x2 Gig*?" what is faster?
I'm still don't know if witch to choose?
4 times 1 gigabyte Ram Memory is cheaper but if I choose for 2 times 2 GB Ram I can always beef it it later.
And is my memory faster if I'm using 4 slots with 1 gig over 2 slot with 2 gig?
I'm asking this question because I think using 4 times the memory bandwidth will be faster?

    Hello Jan
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The iMac (Late 2009): Installing or replacing memory article and your User's Guide are pretty clear, they both say that +"You can use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot."+ and not 1GB modules. > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3918
To upgrade your ram you will want at least 2 more 2 or 4GB modules and add that to the current 2 x 2GB of ram. > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/DDR321.527

  • Satellite A500-1DU - What is HDD max capacity

    Hello,
I have to re-install the factory installed Win 7 on my Satellite A500-1DU because I am not able to install SP1.
The cause is that the product information inside Win 7 is missing.
Regarding this I like to install a new HDD with more capacity (current 400gb).
Which HDD can I install and what is the max capacity (1TB, 750gb)?
    BIOS is current.
    Any hint is welcome.
    Thank you in advance

    Hi
From my knowledge there is no limitation in HDD capacity since the SATA controller is used and the SATA controller should support more than 400GB.

Using hdmi on my 3 week old G70 120em I only get blank screen on my Panasonic 42PX plasma tv. I have also Used Friends TV's Sony and Samsung LCD but on response. The computer sees the TV as I get the name up on the nvidia page. I have used advice from HP web site several times including powering down Comp and leaving TV on the HDMI channel then power back up.

Maybe so, but you can't watch ANYTHING in Hi-def.
it's much better to watch anything than almost nothing at all.... besides, quality is just fine on the tv.
Right... Everyone knows Standard def is fine compared to Hi def, that's why HD tv's don't sell.....   *sarcasm*
I'm sure soon enough there will be a fix to allow viewing of Hi Def content over HDMI.

  • HP G70 120EM Fan Replacement

My fan is not blowing air out of the laptop. It's not spinning at all. I've tried using canned air to blow out dust but it had no effect. Does anyone have experience of changing the fan in a HP g70 laptop? I've looked at the manual and I have to take the whole thing apart, which is a worry. Could it be another fault that has stopped it from working?

You should look through the HP G70-120EM Maintenance and Service Guide before attempting to service your notebook: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01573159.pdf
Generally, if the fan stops working it's because of mechanical failure. The only other thing I would recommend would be a BIOS update if the unit stays on long enough to perform one.

  • My battery has a current max capacity of 97% after only 2 month ...

    Hi everyone.
I don't know if I'm a little bit paranoid but I just checked the current max capacity of my battery (Macbook Pro 2012 13") with different softwares as Battery Health or Battery Guard (available on the App Store) and it reads 97% after only 2 month and 3 cycles ... Is it normal?
I'm kinda worried, the loss of capacity seems so fast, to me ...
More details : this capacity was 100.6% just before I tried to calibrate it. I followed the advices of Battery Health :
    1) Charge the battery until 100%, then wait 2 hours with the Macbook plugged
    2) Use it, until it shuts down by itself, then let the Macbook 5 hours at least without charging it again
    3) Charge the Macbook until 100% again
After this manipulation, my max capacity lost 3 percent ... Is this something I did? Is it normal?
Does the Macbook have to calibrate his battery again? Then, what's the manipulation to do to calibrate it (I looked for it on the Apple website, but I can't find a step-by-step)?
    Thank you all

Battery capacity degrades over the life of the battery for a lot of reasons and will fluctuate from day-to-day by a percent or two.  Instead of using apps to read the battery, you can get all the info you need right from the system itself.  Click the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and then just read the battery Capacity, charge Cycles, Condition, and Voltage.  As long as the Condition is Normal you are fine.
Although Apple says to calibrate the battery by discharging to shutoff and then recharge, that in reality is not good for Lithium-technology, and it does not calibrate the battery, it calibrates the charge reporting circuitry.
If you go to the Battery University site, an independent group that has done a lot of studies of batteries, you can find information on prolonging Lithium-technology battery life.  One thing that is clear is that deep discharge cycles are very degrading on battery life.  Optimum balance of use/life seems to be around a discharge to 50% and then recharge.  Also, temperature is a major player in shortening battery life.
At thiis point, don't get too hung up on the battery capacity, use the MBP and enjoy it.

  • Will a G70-120EM motherboard fit a G70-111EM?

Hi, so my motherboard broke due to me spilling coke on it, and unfortunatly i didn't have any care/protection on it at the time. I have found another motherboard on ebay, and im wondering if it will fit mine as the heatsink looks slightly different.
My laptop motherboard is a HP G70-111EM
The motherboard im interested in is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HP-G70-motherboard-2-GHz-Intel-Core-2-Duo-processor-/270587170495?cmd=ViewItem...
and according to the ebay post it is a HP G70-120EM
    Will it fit mine?
    Thanks

Your model (G70-111EM) use Intel GMA, while G70-120EM use Nvidia 9200M GE, however, since the seller also provide the fan/heat sink, my best guess it will fit in very well.

  • Current Capacity Max Capacity

    Hi,
i am working on weblogic 8.1 sp5 ,with the following configuration:
    initial Capacity =20
    max Capacity =20
    Capacity Increment:2
    after fail over operation
i got that the current Capacity of the pool become 22 which is bigger than max Capacity
is there a specail problem with this veriosn of weblogic or how can i explain this ?
    Thanks in advance

    Joe,
Thanks for the reply. The reason why we switched from initial capacity = max capacity stratgey was because of the database issues that we encountered. There was significant DB proceses (resource) consumption although when only 1/4 of connections (in turn db resources) would have been sufficient. I fail to understand why the approach as specified in the current config is not working as desired. You have mentioned about a possibility of a bug. Can you please elaborate or point me to right documentation?
Also, why is the connection pool itself getting closed frequently (possibly every transaction)?

  • Calibrating Lowered Max Capacity

I had never calibrated my 1.5 year old Macbook Pro before. I checked the max capacity and it was at 97% of the 4600mAh design capacity. I followed the calibration instructions to a "T" and now it says the max is only 92%. What happened??

You're battery reading is more accurate. You didn't lose anything.

  • Max capacity of ufs filesystem

What the max capacity of ufs filesystem in solaris for sparc?
Can it be lager than 10TB?

    From "man ufs":
    Multiterabyte File System
A multiterabyte file system enables creation of a UFS file
system up to approximately 16 terabytes of usable space,
minus approximately one percent overhead. A sparse file can
have a logical size of one terabyte. However, the actual
amount of data that can be stored in a file is approximately
one percent less than one terabyte because of file system
    overhead.
.. looks like it, i would advise against it though.
