HP G70-120EM Upgrades

Hey there.
I bought a HP G70-120EM just over 2 years ago and its now its starting to just slow down.
It's been overhauled twice; once when I installed win7 and then again last Nov when I did a reinstall of 7. I use TuneUp Utilities to help improve my system as a whole; but its making no real difference.
I haven't upgraded it at all in terms of hardware.
So I was wondering what can be upgraded on it? Specifically can the gfx be upgraded, and can the processor/s be upgraded?

It ain't really worth it, but for the record, the graphics cannot be modified at all. The processor could be, but the cost would make it kind of pointless. Memory is a possible upgrade and a faster hard drive but any modern laptop should run pretty fast if the software is properly maintained. Clean up the startup routine; stop programs from running in the background. And it might be a good idea to try another clean install of Windows 7.

  • G70 120em hdmi out put

Using hdmi on my 3 week old G70 120em I only get blank screen on my Panasonic 42PX plasma tv. I have also Used Friends TV's Sony and Samsung LCD but on response. The computer sees the TV as I get the name up on the nvidia page. I have used advice from HP web site several times including powering down Comp and leaving TV on the HDMI channel then power back up.
    Thanks in advance

Maybe so, but you can't watch ANYTHING in Hi-def.
it's much better to watch anything than almost nothing at all.... besides, quality is just fine on the tv.
Right... Everyone knows Standard def is fine compared to Hi def, that's why HD tv's don't sell.....   *sarcasm*
I'm sure soon enough there will be a fix to allow viewing of Hi Def content over HDMI.

  • My HP G70-120EM Laptop with a blueray player will not recognise blueray discs.

my HP G70-120EM Laptop with a blueray player will not recognise blueray discs. Any idea what software update I need?

I also have this problem on an Envy 17 laptop with a HP DVDBD TS-TB23L drive that shows up as a BD-ROM.  It will play music and read data discs but not play BLURAY or DVD discs.  It is very disheartening to finid such a lack of support for any problems on HP machines and will make me question ever buy an HP device.  They seem to produce them at such a rate that they never bother when things go wrong as there is another being produced in the next five minutes.  At first I thought this was a problem with the drive but now I suspect it is a software problem they are not bothering to resolve.

  • HP G70 120EM Fan Replacement

My fan is not blowing air out of the laptop. It's not spinning at all. I've tried using canned air to blow out dust but it had no effect. Does anyone have experience of changing the fan in a HP g70 laptop? I've looked at the manual and I have to take the whole thing apart, which is a worry. Could it be another fault that has stopped it from working?

You should look through the HP G70-120EM Maintenance and Service Guide before attempting to service your notebook: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01573159.pdf
Generally, if the fan stops working it's because of mechanical failure. The only other thing I would recommend would be a BIOS update if the unit stays on long enough to perform one.

  • Will a G70-120EM motherboard fit a G70-111EM?

Hi, so my motherboard broke due to me spilling coke on it, and unfortunatly i didn't have any care/protection on it at the time. I have found another motherboard on ebay, and im wondering if it will fit mine as the heatsink looks slightly different.
My laptop motherboard is a HP G70-111EM
The motherboard im interested in is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HP-G70-motherboard-2-GHz-Intel-Core-2-Duo-processor-/270587170495?cmd=ViewItem...
and according to the ebay post it is a HP G70-120EM
    Will it fit mine?
    Thanks

Your model (G70-111EM) use Intel GMA, while G70-120EM use Nvidia 9200M GE, however, since the seller also provide the fan/heat sink, my best guess it will fit in very well.

  • HP G70-120EM - Memory Question - Max Capacity

    Hi,
I have a HP G70-120EM laptop. I am looking to increase the memory capacity with a pair of matched modules, as big as possible.
    Ive got:
    1 x 1GB Hynix PC2-5300
    1 x 2GB Transcend  PC2-5300
    667 MHz
Now, the specification says memory max = 3GB, but can be up to PC2-6400 800Mhz.
I suspect that this 3GB cap is due to the laptop coing with vista 32bit, but ive now installed Windows 7 64bit.
So, whats the max the laptop can handle?
    Can it take 2 x 2GB or 2 x 4GB? Or is it really limited to 3GB?
Im looking to put as much as possible in there at the maximum speed of PC2-6400.
    Thanks in advance.

    Huffer, Thanks for the reply.
Ive managed to source a document through this website.
    HP G70 Notebook PC
    Compaq Presario CQ70 Notebook PC
    Maintenance and Service Guide
    Document Part Number: 485462-001
    September 2008
In this document on page 8 it says
    Supports dual-channel memory
Supports up to 4 GB of system memory
    Supports PC2-6400, 800-MHz, DDR2 and
    PC2-5300, 667-MHz, DDR2
So i think ive found the answer i was looking for yet, what you have said contradicts this. I was planning 2 x 2GB of 800mhz memory running in dual channel.
Have you tried this and it did not work or was you speculating?
I was going to pay £70 for the sticks today, but if you know that it is not going to work then ill simply grab another transcend 2GB 667 module and leave it at that.
    Thanks a lot.

  • HP G70-120EA upgrade HDD problem

I've been having problems with my notebook crashing. A test confirms it's a HDD problem. So I buy a replacement HDD exactly the same as before (WD Scorpio Blue) only this time 320GB. The original was 160GB.
I've fitted the new HDD and tried 3 times to reinstall the software using the Recovery discs. But it keeps failing to install the software properly.
Is the problem caused because the new HDD has a larger capacity or is it something else?
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What is the error. Yesterday, I swapped HDD on one of my laptops from 160GB to 750GB w/o any problem. My suggestion is to check the BIOS and upgrade it.
    Regards.

    Hi,
The specs shows only 3GB probably the original specs used 32 bit operating system therefore no point to install more than 4GB. Why only 3 because MANY users bought 4GB machines and kept asking why we had to pay 4 but could not use 4.  What is the version of the Operating system on your machine now ? May be it has 64bit OS now and that's is a good news, you don't have to looking for a RAM upgrade task.
    Regards.
ps. Actually the following link shows your machine can only have 4GB max. Which HP screen you are talking about ?

  • G70 Laptop Problems

I own a G70-120EM. I have several problems with my HP laptop. When I move my screen, it flickers violently, to the point where the entire screen is white. If I'm lucky, it will return to normal. It only does this if it has been stationary for a while.
Another problem is that every so often, the power just cuts completely when I'm in the middle of something (whilst plugged in). I can only turn the laptop back on if I remove the plug and use it on battery power.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I tried contacting HP support but they won't help me, due to the fact I'm not in warranty any more.
    Thanks

I have exactly the same problem!  Frantic screen flickers even when stationary - moving screen, or tapping laptop stops it.  Sometimes the pc can be on for hours before it does it and then sometimes only a few minutes!  The effect reminds me of the old horizontal rolling flicker lines you used to get on old valve tv's only a lot more severe!
I also get the sudden power off at random times.  This though, is rare and tends to happen when the pc hangs for several minutes, but has happened a few times in normal operation.
I am assuming that this problem is either a dry joint (as the laptop gets very hot from time to time through me using it in bed a lot!!), or a loose or dodgy cable/connector or a problem with the inverter.  I suppose it could be the graphics card itself going funny, but I am tending to go for the cable/socket option.    It's weird , though, as I can't actually get it to do it manually - I move the screen about, rock the laptop, turn it upside down etc and - nothing!!  This seems to rule out something loose!  This, of course, wont be known until a strip-down is initiated an a thorough examination is done!
My power jack in the socket seems a little loose too.  It's not the socket housing it's the aperture that seems slightly too big for the jack!!!    Moving the jack makes the light go on and off and sometimes it is off but yet the pc is still powered by it.  I notice too, that sometimes the battery only lasts 20min or so.  I assume that the socket is a little faulty and this is the cause of the non charging of the battery!  I suppose a new one is going to have to be fitted!  Maybe this is the power off fault causer!!!
Any other thoughts from anyone would be gratefully received before I go in for a re-con!
    Cheers!

  • HP G70-250CA 8GB RAM upgrade problem

I am trying to upgrade my HP G70-250CA from 6GB of RAM to 8GB, but cannot get it to work.
It is currently running fine with 6GB of RAM, configured as one 4GB and one 2GB stick. I have purchased a second 4GB stick. When I replace the 2GB stick with the second 4GB stick, the system does not boot. All I see at startup is a black screen -- it does not even show the BIOS splash screen.
Either one of the 4GB sticks works fine by itself, I tested them both, and the current configuration of 6GB works fine too. From my reading, this system should be able to support 8GB of RAM.
Any ideas what the problem might be, or further steps I could use to diagnose?

  • Virus ruined Win7, no upgrade disk to be found?

    Hi everyone.
I have a G70-467CL notebook.  It came with Vista, with the promise that when Windows 7 came out I could upgrade for free.  I did so as soon as I could.
Here it is 3 years later, I get a virus that makes booting my machine impossible.  I took out the HD, copied my important files to a backup HD, and started over from scratch.  Only problem is, I can't find the upgrade disc ANYWHERE.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated, as I'm in the 3rd week of a new school semester and I can't do without my notebook computer.  (That and I forgot how much Vista sucked, AND buying Win 7 seems rediculous since I already have it...)
Anyway, I can't recall if HP sent out upgrade discs or if you had to download Windows 7 or what the deal was, because it's been a while.  If they sent out discs, I can't find mine anywhere.  And HP's website is a mess when it comes to ordering recovery discs.  (Of Windows 7, not Vista.  I made those, they worked...)  AND I have to pay them if I even want to talk to a real person...
Apologies for my tone.  This whole ordeal is *really* bothering me...
Thank you in advance, and I really appreciate anyone's help.
    Good evening.

To the best of my knowledge, the Windows 7 upgrade discs once lost, cannot be ordered again. (Microsft limitation i guess, due to long time since the upgrade program was launched). Hence I think the only option is to have a retail version of Win 7 and install it for your notebook.

  • HDMI no sound with Windows 7 upgrade

I am unable to get sound with HDMI , but visual is working, after upgrading from Vista to Windows 7.  G70 series laptop, s/n 2CE92870KS.
Under control panel/device manager/display adapters, what is listed is mobile intel (r) 4 series express chipset family.
Under control panel/device manager/sound video games, what is listed is coexant high definition smart audio 221 and intel high definition audio hdmi.
Under control panel/sound/playback, what is listed is coexant high definition smart audio 221.
I am floundering greatly trying to figure out why the intel high definition audio hdmi is not listed under sound/playback.  I would greatly appreciate any help.  Thanks

    Hi Jim,
Try this to see if it helps.  Download the Chipset driver and Graphics driver on the links below and save the installers to your Desktop.
    Chipset
    Graphics Driver
Next, in Device Manager, open Display Adapters, right click on the Intel graphics chip and select Properties.  Click the Driver tab and then select uninstall.  When done, do the same for the for the Intel High Definition Audio Codec found under Sound Video and Game Controllers.
Now return to the Desktop and install the Chipset driver and then the Graphics driver.  When complete, reboot the PC and see if this has helped.  Check in Device Manager that both the Intel Graphics and the Intel Hi Definition Audio codec have reinstalled successfully and whether you now see the HDMI Audio option under playback devices ( found in Control Panel, Sound ) as shown as the top option on the screenshot below ( ignore the fact that it's ATI, i just mean the TV icon option ).
    http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w146/rproffitt2000/?action=view&current=7Speakers.png&newest=1
If it shows up correctly, try the HDMI connection and see if it now functions properly.
    Best wishes,

    Hi:
I am looking at the BIOS setup guide for your PC series and it shows there is a VT setting under the device configuration menu for "select models." See Chapter 3 page 6.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01662442.pdf
Here are the specs on the T6500 processor. It does not support VT, which is why the VT setting cannot be enabled.

  • HP G70-250US BIOS Manufacturer and version

    Hi,
I have a HP G70-50US Laptop that won't boot and need to know the BIOS maker (i.e. AMI Award etc.) and version so I can lookup the codes for a Power On System Test Card.
    Thank you.

Hi hp_edm, welcome to the HP Forums. If your computer is very slow after the BIOS upgrade, are you still able to boot into Windows? You could first try to restore the BIOS using this method: HP Notebook PCs - Restoring the BIOS
If that doesn't help, try a hard reset using this method:  Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset
If it is still slow, test your hard drive using this method:  Testing a Hard Disk from the BIOS
Let me know how that turns out.

  • IPod no longer works with car stereo since upgraded MBA & iTunes

My iPod classic has worked just fine connected to my car stereo since i bought it last june. I just bought a new Macbook Air (OS 10.7.3) & installed ITUNES 10.6.1. After I synched my ipod for the first time its recognised by the car but i get a "can't read data" message. I re-formatted my ipod but its exactly the same. Do you think its the upgrade- or the cable? Has anyone else found a bug with this version of Itunes or the OS? I have my doubts a cable would make the difference, and my old ipod nano that i haven't synched for a while works fine.

If standalone works fine, then, most likely the 30 pin connect may have some dirt or lint, prevent data transfer.
You can try to blow it clean, if you have a can of compressed air or gas.
Alternatively you can connect it to the car stereo and do the RESET, while connnected.as follows
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs

The Reset sequence may send a signal to the Car stereo to do the right thing
