HP G71 recover files once motherboard is dead

My HP g71 motherboard is dead.  I would like to get the files off the hard drive.  The G71 will not boot up at all.  No errors nothing but black screen.  If I take the hard drive out is there a caddy or holder that I can use to enable me to hook up to the hard drive to get my urgent files off of it.  Thanks

Sure,
There are plenty of aftermarket hard disk enclosures or docking stations that you can use.The docking station is the easiest type. You don't even need to install the hard disk with a docking station. Connect the docking station to another PC plug in the mobile hard drive and retrieve you data. It is as simple as that. If you have a newer PC with USB 3.0 ports, be sure and purchase a USB 3.0 type for its higher data transfer speed.
Here is one example at NewEgg.com.

  • Recover files from *desktop* of dead MBP?

My MBP died an expensive death when a friend spilled water on the table where it was charging. The display and power station area inside are dead.
A great shop here extracted the hard drive and enclosed it, and my files from my hard drive are there.
But I had some of my most current work documents on the desktop of the MBP. I can't find those on the extracted hard drive.
Does anyone know those desktop files should be hidden away on this recovered hard drive somewhere? Or if there's any way I could get them? Of course, they were the only files that weren't backed up, as they were new and I back up once/week. (that will change).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Well although I didn't delete folder named Recovered files once in week that folder is in my trash. Is that normal process or something is wrong?

It is normal for system to send those recovered files to the trash.
It is safe to empty those "Recovered Files".

Try updating your QuickTime to the most recent version. Does that clear up the DEP errors in iTunes?

  • Recovering files from dead MacBook

I have a dead Macbook Pro. As in, it won't even turn on. This is key, as most discussions on this topic involve computers that will turn on, but won't totally boot. Is it possible for me to recover files from that computer if it won't turn on, and how? The hard drive is in working condition. The computer won't start, according to Apple, because a coffee spill (my fault) caused some damage to the area around the start up button. Everything else on the computer is in grand working condition as far as I'm aware.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What you can do is to take out the hard drive and make sure it's not water damaged. Then, buy a USB to SATA adapter, and connect it to any PC or Mac.
You won't have any problem to recover your data if you connect it to a Mac, but you will have problems with PCs. The filesystem that OS X uses is not detected by Windows, so you will have to install an application like Paragon HFS to read the hard drive and recover your data

  • Old unreadable hard drives - looking to recover files

I have two old hard drives - both from my first iMac (Bondi Blue, purchased in early 1999). The first one "died" sometime in 2002 (blinking folder/question mark) so I replaced it with the second one. Eventually the second died the same death (both OS9).
I moved on and have been with my G5 ever since (2005).
I've kept the two drives in storage, hoping that someday data recovery at home would be a typical option. Ha.
Last week, looking to fiddle with the old drives, I bought a slot-loading iMac CRT on craigslist for $25, no keyboard or mouse. It has a working hard drive with OSX installed. The keyboard/mouse from my G5 work fine on it.
So I removed the hard drive and replaced it with each of my hard drives. Of course, same old story: each drive was unreadable (blinking folder/question mark).
I don't have the original install discs (in fact I don't have any install discs).
All I have is a Norton Utilities disc, which the computer will not start up from no matter which hard drive (including the working one) I have attached (I suspect that even though I press 'C', the newer keyboard takes longer to be recognized and is not readable upon startup). I also tried booting from the Norton CD using open firmware with no luck.
    Bottom line is:
I have 2 "dead" hard drives (blinking folder/question mark):
    - Quantum Fireball EX 3.5 Series
    - Maxtor D540X-4K 3.5" Series
and I have a slot-loading iMac (CRT) with no install discs and only my G5 keyboard/mouse to use it with.
I've done a lot of research looking for any possible way of recovering files from these drives, but all information inevitably leads to "see a data recovery specialist'.
I imagine I will get the same advice here, but I absolutely can't afford the upwards of $1,000 it could cost for that service.
Am I out of luck completely? Should I put the drives back into storage until I can afford a recovery specialist?
    Thanks.

I doubt this would boot. You do not have the drivers on your version of Mac OS to support newer hardware.

Lots of bad reports about Norton. They stopped updating the utility, so user beware.

  • How do I recover files from HP Connected Drive that no longer show up after a factory reset?

I am trying to recover files that were once visible in HP Connected Drive, after completing a factory reset. The files that I need are no longer showing up. How can I get them back?

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't erase the drive or write anything else to it until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

  • Recovering files external hard drive

Wasn't sure where to post this.  I haven't been on here for awhile, and I'm not used to the "new" structure.
My 1TB LaCie external hard drive - which had my Time Machine backups on it (multiple ones unfortunately) no longer mounts.  I downloaded some file recovery software which can manage to find files, but not any file sorting information or names.
The first time I ran the software (it runs through Terminal), I let it go about 5.5 hours, and it had recovered approximately 1,100 folders worth of files, each folder holding 500 files (all named generically), and estimated that it had 66+ hours left to go.  Most of the files (around 30,000) were txt files which were useless garbage.  There were also many of the files I wanted (old photos & files from college), however, there is no chance I will ever have time to go through all the files it had at that point, let alone another 66+ hours worth.
I started recovery over, this time setting limitations on file types (no more txt files), as well as other files I know I don't need.  Once again after the same amount of time, I'm in a similar situation.  Less files, but lots of random pngs and crap from websites I don't even remember.
As far as I can tell, a LOT of these files have many many versions.  I'm going to assume maybe from the multiple Time Machines?  There are photos from when I went to college that were classmates pictures, that I don't remember ever having saved to my computer.  There's what I can only imagine are cut up mangled files from the inner workings of Adobe CS3, and tons of crap from what I imagine must be old internet caching.
Anyway, I'm not sure what my question is, but I'm mostly wondering if anyone else has had a hard drive with their "Time Machine" backups on it fail.  And if so, any advice for sorting out the mess of many duplicated files?  Perhaps I would be better served to use different software...but this was free, and I already spent $92 on a new external hard drive to recover files to.  However, if someone knows of a decent recovery program that might save me a bit of time, I suppose it would be worth it.  It just seems most of them have no guarantees, and I don't want to shell out $100, just to be sitting in the same puddle of files.
    Thanks!

In any case if you connect the drive to your computer, then open Disk Utility, does the drive appear on your Desktop? If not, does it appear in DU's device list in the sidebar?
The new external hard drive appears in disc utility, but not the old external hard drive with which I'm having problems.
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
So, I guess you're saying that any of those you mention are better than Disc Warrior for my problem. Is that right?
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Okay, I have now disconnected the external hard drive. I hadn't realized that there was the possibility of overwriting files on the EXTERNAL hard drive.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Okay, I'll do that, but what about just repairing the external hard drive? Isn't that possible? I mean, couldn't it be something like a loose connection? However, I have certainly noticed that hard drive repair is not mentioned nearly as much as data recovery. There must be a reason for that.

  • Unexplained "Recovered Files" folder in Trash at Startup

Every time I start up my Mac, a folder appears in my Trash; It's titled "Recovered Files". In this folder is a small 4K file: AOLTemp.html
What might be causing this? I don't use AOL. I delete the folder, and it shows up again after the next startup.
    Thank you,
    Mike D.

    Hello Steve:
No, I have never seen or heard of anything in the recovered files folder that was anything useful. Apple OS used to delete these files automatically. For some reason, OS X 10.4 plunks them into the discovered files folder. And I agree, it is confusing. I almost went ballistic the first time I saw it happen. By definition, they are temporary files that, once the session is closed, are of no further use.
I (and others) have suggested that the OS revert to the old way of doing things.

  • Recovered Files reappearing in Trash

    Hi,
I wanted to know how I can permenantly delete a 'Recovered Files' folder in trash. I 'Secure Empty Trash' everytime and then the folder and its contents disappear. But once I shut down and reboot, the 'Recovered Files' folder reappears in the Trash.
All files that are deleted never reappears, but that Recovered Files folder returns everytime.
    Thanks for all the help!
    Regards,

Check the contents of the folder, and see if any files you desired to keep are there. If they are files that you don't know their origin, leave them there, as they may be temporary files for specific open applications.

  • 'Recovered Files' in my iMac Trash folder

I have iMac that was upgraded to Mavericks in January. But only recently I have been seeing a folder, called 'Recovered Files', suddenly showing up in the Trash folder every day, despite deleting it daily. This folder contains file called 'MerpAD Office365'. I have no idea what this file is, and am unable to open it after restoring it to my desktop. What is this file, where does it come from, what is it for, what automatic process is putting it into my Trash folder, and why? Is it some sort of "secret" file? A forum member once said last year to just ignore it because it is harmless. Well, if someone knows that it's harmless, why is there so much secrecy about it?! Any chance of an answer to this question directly from Apple, because it seems to me the user community has been frustrated long enough on the whys and wherefores behind this Recovered-Files-in-Trash issue.

Office365 in the title would suggest it is something to do with Microsoft Office, if you have the latest version.
Recovered Files in the Trash are files that the OS puts there at restart, if it discovers a file that hasn't been "put away" properly.
There is no secrecy. It's just OS X doing housekeeping. If you want to ask someone, ask Microsoft why their apps aren't tidying up after themselves.

  • Recovering files from your ipod

My computer got reconfigured, so is there a way ro recover files from your ipod to your computer? I have a windows XP not a mac,if that makes a difference.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • CS6 Beta ended by crash - How/Where to keep my Auto-Saved Recovered file ?

    Hello,
I was working on Photoshop CS6 beta on Lion OSX since one month with no problem.
Yesterday seemed to be the last day of use (1st june annonced however) and Photoshop CS6 Beta shutted down since I was working on it.
On the re-opening it asks for a licence key so I try to buy one month rental on the e-shop but the 3 bank cards tested failed. So I gave a call to the commercial service and they told me that they do not take in charge rental but only full licence and that I can download the trial for one more month if I want to.
So, I will replace the beta by the trial.
    But :
    - How can I keep my Auto-saved Recovered file I was working on when crashing (pretty important work)
    - Where the recovered file is saved on the hard-drive ? And, can I make it works whith CS6 non-beta ?
A lot of thanks in advance for your help.
    Kind Regards

As I understand it - having not (fortunatley) had the opportunity to test this - if PS crashes and you have auto-save switched on, you need to re-launch PS and it will automatically open with the recovered file(s) in the state they were at when auto-save last saved them. Auto-save stores files temporarily in a special folder that's located at the same file path as your scratch disk location. (My scratch disk is at root level on a seperate drive, so it's easy to see the auto-save folder if I look there, but if you can locate your scratch disk, you should see the auto-save folder also.)
Of course, the fact that you can no longer open PS is going to present a problem here. I'm not sure if you could re-access the file via the trial version once that was installed and pointing to the same scratch disk area.
I might have got this wrong, but I think it's correct... Feel free to disprove my post!

  • Recovering files that have been emptied from the trash

Is ther any way to recover files that you have sent to the trash, which you have subsequently emptied? Third party software? I accidentally trashed my entire iphoto library.
    B&W G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

If your photo library is on your startup volume, and if you've continued to use the startup volume since deleting the files, then your chances of recovery may be very small. Once files are deleted the operating system may use the space occupied by the deleted files when it writes new data to the drive. The more new data written to the drive the greater the probability that your old files will be overwritten. Once overwritten they cannot be recovered.
If you hope to maximize recovery then you need to immediately shut the computer off or boot from a different drive and stop using the drive on which the deleted files are located.

  • OS re-install; previous systems; recovered files #1, #2....

    Hi,
A while back I was one of those people who had problems with the Intel iMac hanging and never being able to boot up again after installing system updates.
I reinstalled the operating system twice...(and since then learned to download the system update from the site first and installing locally).
    Couple question:
    1) I have a two "Previous System" in my Macintosh HD, from the two re-installations, naturally. Is it safe to delete these folders?
    2) I notice that I often have "Recovered Files" appearing in my trash bin. They just appear, and if I don't empty it out, they start piling up like Recovered files #1, #2, etc. Why is this happening?
    3) Oh and a side question...the scroll on my Mighty Mouse doesn't work anymore. Any idea how long these are covered under warranty...and to answer my next question, should the warranty be short...is there another recommended mouse that has the same funcionality as the might mouse that can load the dashboard and zoom out to see all open windows at once?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, you can delete the PSFs.
    2. This will explain the recovered files in the Trash.
    3. If you don't have an AppleCare warranty the mouse is covered for 1 year. Any multi-button mouse can replace it. One of the very best (but expensive) is the LogiTech MX Revolution. It retails for $99 but can be found cheaper if you shop. Get the shareware utility SteerMouse (VersionTracker or MacUpdate) to use with it to program the various controls. Avoid using the LogiTech software which can be problematic.
