HP iPOD mini = Piece of Trash

I have had nothing but problems with my HP apple iPOD mini. For starters it had to be returned to HP, after a month of usage, as it just stopped working. They did repair it, and I received it back after a couple weeks.
Well the problems continue. Today I transferred a bunch of music onto my iPOD, and when I plugged my iPOD in at work, to update the library, all the new songs I had uploaded to the iPOD had become corrupt. I know for a fact they were fine before, as I was listening to them on the way to work. Now all my songs appear to be corrupt, and I cannot listen to any of them.
In addition when I plugged my iPOD into my machine at work, iTUNEs popped up, which I closed, as it is a horrible piece of software. Much to my dismay if went ahead and updated my iPOD software, even after I told it not to, and not to ask me again.
Am I seriously going to have to send this lemon of a product in again for more technical support? I have not even owned this product for 6 months and it has failed, completely twice, and become corrupt multiple times. I knew there was a reason why I did not buy HP or Apple products, and the reason has become even more apparent.

And this has nothing to do with it being an HP iPod. Obviouslty you have a problem with your computer, NOT your iPod. This is in no way Apple's fault.
Im sorry you dont know what you are talking about. The third party program did not cause anything to become corrupt. I very clearly stated, the songs were fine, and I listened to them on my way to work. The songs became corrupt after plugging my iPOD into my PC at work and iTUNES syncing the library, after I told it not to.
The fact that I have had this exact same problem before, with the entire iPOD becomming corrupt, over time, and had to send it off to be fixed, is proof positive that the storage media has become corrupt yet again.
So you Ejected it using iTunes or from the USB manager, correct?
I ejected the ipod from my computer which lists all drives including the iPOD when connected. I know the proper disconnection routine, as I have done it numerous times without issue.
And Apple hardware/software is to blame because???
The third party program is not to blame. It is by a reputable company, I have used there software on my creative jukebox without issue, and have used it multiple time before, with my iPOD, without issue. Apple hardware / software is to blame, because everything has become corrupt, the exact same way things occured the last time I had to send it off to be fixed. Last time I phoned about this problem I was told to use the update software to erase everything and to use the reset procedure. This did not work at all, and problems persisted as they do now.
This type of responce is the biggest cop-out there is. People are more willing to pass the problem onto another company, just to wipe there hands clean of a poorly manufactoured product. If we were to look at the history of defects in products, from both companies, it becomes very clear where the problem lies.
So they were MP3 format, not AAC? Or were you trying to use a non-Apple codec in WMP?
They were the proper format for the iPOD. Windows Media Player can play anything on the iPOD very easily. There is a reason windows media player can download codecs it does not initially come with. It is also the reason I ejected my iPOD and tried the headphones, and the songs were stil corrupt, as I wanted to make sure it was the iPOD and not windows media player which was the problem.
You aren't using any Apple software (except what is on the Mini) and Apple software messed up how?
I very clearly stated iTUNES was the culprit, and yes iTUNES is apple software. In addition the entire library on the iPOD has spotaneously become corrupt as it did the last time I had to send it in for repairs. If events unfold in a similiar manner as last time, my iPOD should stop functioning, at all, in a very short period of time.
Even a quick glance at the threads in this forum would give a person the understanding, that I am not the only person with these types of problems.

  • Left ear piece stopped working w/my iPod mini

Just like the subject line says, the left ear piece stopped working with my iPod mini after using a regular pair of black headphones for a couple weeks. Gee, this must mean your headphones were garbage? Well I purchased a pair of $5 ear phones that didn't work well at all with my iPod. Gee, I keep buying cheap ear phones. How about purchasing the authentic Apple ear buds? Well that's exactly what I did 3 weeks ago. After purchasing the ear buds for $30 that were made by Apple with the assumption it must work just fine, I tested them and found out they didn't work, however I plugged them into other devices and it worked just fine. I exchanged the pair and same problem.
So yeah, something is effed up with my iPod where it won't play any audio in the left ear bud, however when I plug my ear phones or headphones into the slot on the iPod about half way in then I can hear the music just fine on both sides.
What do I do? Am I stuck with Apple's problem with their product for good? Can they do something about this problem? Is there any steps I can follow to open the 'pod and fix it myself?

This has helped people hearing warbled sound through their earbuds. Maybe it could help you, too?
    "Hello everybody,
I have found a solution for my problem, I hope it can help you guys too. I found this following link to get my ipod open:
    http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/30180
When I opened it I discovered that the connection to the little print (?) where you plug in your headphones was loose (it is a piece with both the headphone plug and the hold function). So I simply reconnected it, and voila, my ipod was fixed! Good luck!"
"I had the same problem and fixed it by following the procedures to opening the mini to replace the battery. Then you will see the CB that the headphones plugs into. This CB (circuit board) plugs into the main ( mother board )
Mine had worked it's way partly out. I pushed this plug back on securely and the headphones now work. Hope this helps. You can find the instructions for changing the battery by googling changing the battery on a mini IPOD."

  • Ipod min has stopped being recognised

My ipod mini was installed on my windows XP and tunes bought/downloaded from itunes. Six months later and computer has stopped recognising ipod. Message says to "reset" or "restore" and only the restore option (with subsequent loss of songs) can be activated.
Need suggestions to ensure that original PC recognises ipod.
Posible cause of problem: ipod was connected to a Mac to download songs from a friend's itunes (no songs bought).
    Thanks!

I have now removed and re-installed every piece of Apple Software on my laptop. I assume this would result in the drivers being re-installed.
However, when I plug the iPOD in a message comes up 'Installing Device Drivers'. Then a message comes up that they are installed successfully, but it does also say 'Searching folders for preconfigured drivers...'. After 10 mins I assumed this did not mean anything and closed the window.
It is not convenient for me to check the other computer's drivers. Anyway, the iPOD used to work on this computer. The only thing I have done on this computer re device drivers is to start using a USB mouse (which installed drivers) and I also checked them all for updates. Only the Intel ones updated.
Needless to say the iPOD is still unrecognised in iTunes.
    Any further help much appreciated.

  • Switching iPod mini from windows to Mac, and how to transfer music files

Hi all. Brand new mac just getting it setup, an Imac, love it so far. I have an old ipod mini I got a couple years ago, it was setup as a windows mini. Plugged it into my imac and it doesnt do anything. As well, I never used itunes software on my old PC, I was using some kind of software called anapod that allowed me to put music in the ipod mini. I've got like 1200 songs on the mini and want to get that into the mac, plus be able to use the mini with the mac now, the pc is hitting the trash when I get all my old files cleared out of it.
Thanks very much for any help!

Hey, not a dumb ?, in fact a good ?......nope, I did not install any software at all, I just figured the imac would recognize it automatically.
We also got a brand new ipod nano, not the new video one, the older one, it was a back to school promo thing, anyways, I got that one all setup no problem, just plugged it in and was good to go.
So I have to install some software on the mac for the mini?
Been doing more reading, sounds like I might have to erase the memory of the mini somehow, not sure how?? But what about my 1200 songs on the PC, how do I get those over to the mac and into itunes?

  • Replace the hard drive in my iPod Mini with CompactFlash Card?

Hi. I just dropped my mini (a whole 4 feet) and now it's broken. The drive is busted. I can hear it just clicking away and then I get the un-happy mac icon. Since it's past its warrantee and I don't have apple care for it, either I replace the hard drive or chuck it in the trash. I'm going to try the first one. I open it up and pulled out the Hitachi 4GB mini hard drive. It appears to just be a CompactFlash Card drive. My question is this:
Can I replace it with any Compact Flash Card?
I was thinking about replacing it with a regular card (i.e. no micro drive with delicate spinning parts). I figure it will be more durable and possibly extend the battery life. I think I can get atleast a 2GB card, which is what I presume they use in the nano.
    Thanks

Technically, you could replace the drive in your iPod. Just make sure you know what you're doing before you do it. After you replace the drive, just restore the iPod through the iPod restore software. After you restore your iPod, you can then use your iPod just like before. One thing I would like to point out is that the Nano uses a flash drive, not a hard drive so there is no point in trying to match a drive with the nano drive. Anyways, you may find the site http://www.ifixit.com helpful when you take on this task. I would also google "replacing iPod mini hard drive" just so you can get some insight before you take the task on.

  • Ipod Mini Exclamation Folder

I have a 4Gb iPod Mini and it has a folder with an exclamation sign next to it.  I have tried resetting it without joy.  It won't go into disk mode.  My PC won't recognise it at all so neither will I-tunes.
Can anybody help or shall I just throw it away?

It's certainly your choice to trash/replace your iPod, and I wish you a good deal if you purchase a replacement media player.
Remember that you can always consult an Apple Genius at the Apple Store to see if it's ultimately cheaper to repair the iPod as opposed to replacing it. If you're thinking of replacing the iPod with another iPod, I'd advise you to bring your malfunctioning iPod to the Apple Store, see what your repair options are, then determine to repair your current iPod or replace it since you'll already be in the store to purchase one. And if you're really lucky, the Apple Store might offer you a discount on a new iPod if you give them your old one.
But even if they don't at least they'll probably be kind enough to let you use their trash can for your iPod that has sadly moved on to the afterlife.
    Best of luck!

  • Refurbished iPod Minis. How good are they?

    Hi there,
I wanted to get a Mini a while back, but by the time I got around to going to look for one, suprise, Apple had cancelled it. So I'm wondering, what are they refurbished iPod minis like? Are the cases new, are they scratched, what is replaced, what is not, general quality, that sort of stuff.
Also, I live in Canada, but looking at the exchange rate, I can save money if I buy from the Online US store, and I get more options on ipod minis. Is it possible for me to buy from the US? Or do I have to stick to the Canadian Store?
    Thanks in advance

Um, I'm not exactly sure, but I'll tell you my experience.
My sister dropped hers one time, probably from a height of about 3 feet. It got a little chip on it (which Apple might actually consider accidental damage and will not cover when it fails, but that's a separate issue), but it still works fine.
If I was you, I would try not to drop it. If it hits right, it can break. I dropped a glass from 6 inches above a counter and it literally shattered into a thousand pieces.
    I hope this helps!

  • IPod mini makes me want to kill myself!!

I've had my iPod mini for many months and never had a problem with it. My brother recieved the same iPod mini for his birthday so we're using two iPods on one computer. So today my brother plugged his iPod into my cord on the computer and later ejected it and left the cord alone. Then I plugged my iPod mini into the same cord and iTunes opened only showing my iPod mini as my brother's iPod mini. So not only are all of my songs deleted off of my iPod but my brother's songs are on my iPod now. AND I can't even listen to his songs that are now on my iPod. It just skips every single one. So ***!? I tried restarting the computer and it's still the same and I tried restarting the iPod mini and it's still the same. It still shows up on iTunes as my brother's iPod. So someone please help before I throw this piece of **** against the wall! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!1

Why is it a piece of c*ap simply because either you or your brother messed up?
Try restoring the iPod back to factory settings, and once you've done that simply transfer the songs you want from iTunes back to your iPod.

  • ITunes 10 & 9/ invisible files on iPod mini

I downloaded some files to my laptop from iTunes U:The Library of Congress; 15 files total. Everything was fine for DL, setting Remember playback position, and Part of a gapless album in iTues info, which is my usual practice for spoken word files.
Once copied to the iPod mini, the files played Ok, but when I re-connected the iPod to my laptop, the files were not visible in the Devices:iPodName:Music folder, or Podcasts folder, or anywhere else on the iPod! Thinking that this might be a problem with iTunes 10, I just got back home and tried it with my desktop G4 running iTues 9, but they are still invisible. This is downright weird. The files remain visible when the iPod is not connected to a computer.
The only place I see remaining for the trouble to be is in a conflict between the files themselves and the iPod mini software. No iPod software update has been seen for a long time. When clicking on the iPod's 'Check For Update' button, an error window opens saying: 'The iPod software update server could not be contacted', yet the computer is connected to the web.
Running software version 1.1.3 on my iPod mini, iTunes 10 on my laptop, and iTunes 9.2.1 on my G4 desktop

I'm trying to access the iPod via the Terminal, clearly the data is encoded, but while I don't understand the code, the invisible files stand out.
I've been stepping through iTunesDB via 'more':

The web address above is the only text that's shown all in one piece in this code. All the rest of the text is displayed one character at a time, separated as above. Does that tell anyone anything? How am I going to get these files off my iPod?

  • IPod Mini sound/volume is as soft as a mouse now

    PLEASE HELP!
I have just got a replacement set of earphones sent to me by apple because the original one just stopped working all of the sudden. I noticed that my iPod mini's sound/volume is about 50% softer than when I originaly got it. I've tried using euPOD and goPOD and also the slider trick but it still doesn't take the volume back to the good old days. I know that it is probably because of the stupid new 26-03-2006 update with the volume limit on it, but i've also tried restoring the iPOD but to no avail either. I've tried everything already and nothing has worked. Does anybody know how I can get around this or I'll just have to throw my Mini in the trash and never buy anything from apple again! I also noticed that the volume slider doesn't actualy change the volume loudness until it gets past halfway.....so it doesn't actualy get softer or louder until I'm about halfway thru. I can't see why apple would want to implement such a ridiculous limit on what was essentialy a very good product.

    Gary,
There is a lot I don't know yet, but I definitely managed to raise the volume by cutting off the sound check and the equalizer when importing new stuff. As a test, I can now hear the words in an audiobook, although the volume is still on maximum for my iPod and car tape player. Unfortunately the old stuff still sounds too faint. (Is this iPod actually updating?)
There is a problem with my car tape player. I haven't bought a head cleaning kit yet, but plan to do so. I connected an FM transmitter and tested the sound -- it was a lot louder. (In my area, I cannot use an FM transmitter in the city because of FM interference. No empty stations. So I either need earphones or to make the tape player work. Or a new car
I don't know yet whether it's the Sound Check or Equalizer that makes the difference. I don't think I ever used Sound Enhancer.
You can raise the volume by selecting songs, going to "Get Info" and resetting the volume bar. This seems to make it louder on the Mac speakers. I cannot tell that anything is getting through to the iPod -- I simply don't hear it yet.
I don't know yet if importing when using Sound Check does anything permanent to the volume of the song. I hope not.

  • Will OS x 10.3.3 run ipod mini??

I can't get my ipod to show in itunes, I have tried everything I can think of including reformatting it! Iam really confused as to weather it will run my ipod mini or not!
will a firewire connection make any difference??
    any help is appreciated.
    thankyou!

I am wondering exactly the same thing and your's is the 1st post I see!
Do you have a 4 GB or is it 6GB... I have a theory that the 4gb is somewhat troublesome on certain macs.
My comp is power G3 Blue/white 400 mhz memory 320mb ... ample free space. oSX 10.3.9 The iPod is a 4GB mini about 4 months old. Firewire connection ( USB I am informed will not work on my machine) and in Rebecca's case she can be assured that the firewire is not a problem!
I should add I have a 20 gb ipod, which worked fine until the disk failed and have just changed it for a new colour screen 20 gb no problem either.
WE got ours a while back, before the june update came out, and after one replacement mini iPod ( I don't think the first was faulty) and several pounds spent in trying to find some one at Apple UK who knew roughly what they were talking about (with success I must add) ... I eventually gave up and put the b^&%$ thing in a drawer.
To day I resurected it. Thought I shall update it and perhaps it will work. The first problem is I cannot update it. I had restored and loaded it on a G4 Powerbook with the previous update ... No problem, but plugged back into my Mac it is reduced to the exclamation folder and nothing else.
This is a detailed description of todays efforts. Is there somebody reading this who can tell us both what might be the problem here. I believe there is a compatibility problem. But all I know is limited to reading a lot of stuff and speaking to a number of people from whom the most significant comment was that it was time I updated my mac. No way!!!!!!!!!!!! this works with everything except this wretched mini.
    My attempts of 28-08-05:
    iPod mini running version 1.3.
Ran software update. took a long time.1/2 hr or so ... left it still updating. I came back and cursor was frozen to updater. There was no icon on desktop so I opened disc utility and ejected iPod. Ipod had folder and exclamation mark. Reset iPod. I plugged it back in it re connected and a message said iTunes has detected new software for mini iPod do you want to update I clicked yes and update started quicker than before. Got message after 7 or 8 minutes "your ipod has been updated to version 1.4 and must be restarted to complete the update process. Then this changed to "an ipod is attached but not mounted on the desk top"
I quit updater. open disc utility i[pod o.k. to disconnect so I disconnect it Folder exclamation mark. quit disc utility.
Plug ipod updater opens. "initializing" type in password "updating iPod software" got same need to restasrt message. This time re-booted the Mac.
Message: iTunes has detected an update! click cancel. i tunes shows ipod disc icon on desktop. No playlists for ipod to load. select 1 playlist got familiar message song could not be found, clicked o.k. and .... nothing happens iPod shows do not disconnect. after 5 mins. tried to eject iPod from iTunes iTunes freezes for a couple of minutes then says iPod "cannot be ejected because it contains files that are In use by another application" I click OK. Quit iTunes I could not trash icon on desk top Open disc utility and try to eject from there ... no luck. Si I try verify disk I get this message:

I've been searching old posts about this problem. It started cropping up back in 2006. At least 66 people have posted about this same phenomenon.
Two posts mentioned possible DIY fixes. Here's their advice (but I haven't tried this myself yet):

Have no idea if this will truly work. Scary stuff, opening up an iPod . . .

  • IPod Mini crashed - now what do or can I do?

Seems like my iPod Mini has crashed.
It seems like it tries to boot up but I just hear what seems like the disk spining, stoping, spining, stopping, like a stuck record.  Not sure if something is fried or not.  I was charging before this happened and it seemed to get pretty hot.
Looks like the product is obsolete and it is not possible to get it fixed.   Not sure if putting in a new drive and battery would fix it.
It was a great product.  What should I do with it?  What does the community recommend?
Throw it away?   How do I properly dispose of it?

There are still several 3rd party repair centers out there who can repair the device for you.  Or if you are up for the challenge, you can still purchase replacement parts for pretty cheap from several sites including Amazon and eBay.
As for recycling, there are also several options.  One of them is Apple.
    http://www.apple.com/recycling/
Personally, I would go for the repair option, because it's always fun reviving an older piece of hardware.   But sometimes it best to just let something go and properly dispose of it.

  • Can i have an ipod mini and an ipod nano on same account

My daughter got an ipod mini 2 christmas's ago and so we have an itunes account. This christmas my son got an ipod nano because they had discontinued the minis. My son likes a lot of the songs that my daughter had on her ipod and i really dont want to use all that money just to rebuy songs. I was wondering if there was any way that I could use one account and they both have the same songs on their ipods.
      Windows XP

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. One way is is to set your preferences so each iPod is updated with only certain playlists within one library. You could create one playlist for the Mini and one for the Nano. Each playlist can have whatever songs you like in it drawn from the single library. Have a look at the article linked below: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer

Around Thanksgiving my iPod Mini that worked for over a year is no longer recognized by iTunes (Actually it shows as a bad file folder then dissapears in Windows Explorer).
I did everything the trouble shooting instructions suggest at least 5 times, except I can't restore because the computer does not recognize the iPod.
I was about to give up on iPods when... in a meeting at work I learned 3 out of 5 iPod users said the same thing happen since Thanksgiving and the others don’t think they have sync'ed yet.
Please just post a ME TOO! response if you have the same issue described above and (In this order):
