HP Laptop doesn't recognize Hard Drive

Hi,
I have a HP 620 (Pentium D 2,3GHz 1GB Ram) and it doesn't recognize the Hard Drive. The battery doesn't seem to work too.
If i try to install Windows, it says that there are no hard drives found. The diagnostic test in the BIOS says the same.
The DVD player is also lousy as **bleep**.
Do you guys have some tips about cause of this problem.

Have you entered the UEFI PC Diagnostics to see if the component tests show the hard disk?
Had you considered removing the original hard disk, then reseating it and trying again to see if it is recognized as beong installed?
You can also put another hard disk in its place to see if it is recognized.
Is your notebook still in warranty? warranty status

Hello Volker, welcome to Lenovo forums!
Unfortunately it seems you have already tried everything to force it to work.
If it´s not recognised in bios, I would suggest to call support.
You might try a Linux live CD, but there´s no really hope
and you already know it too, as an experienced ThinkPad user, I think.

  • Boot from DVD...doesn't recognize hard drive

    Hello all,
Hopefully someone can help me out. I just replaced my 160GB 7200rpm hard drive with a Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm hard drive, put it all back together, booted up from the DVD, went to select a destination for a clean install, but the hard drive doesn't show up. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Time Machine doesn't recognize hard drive

I have installed Leopard on my 2.66 GHz PowerMac. I have a 200 GB Maxtor hard drive hooked to it my PowerMacthrough a hub. I have used the hard drive to manually back up files and that works fine. The hard drive shows up in the finder, but it doesn't show up in Time Machine. I have tried restarting several times to no avail.

I have a different issue but this topic seemed the closest in the discussions. Since buying our new 24" iMac with 750GB internal HDD this Winter (and Leopard) I have had Ext TimeMachine HDD issues (loss).
First, I bought a 1Tb WD MyBook - within a week of use as the TimeMachine drive (and a week of good backups as far as I can tell as we browsed the saved contents periodically) the Ext HDD started failing. It was hard to tell what the problem was, but after twice "locking up" and restarting both the drive and the Mac, I am no longer able to "see" the drive in Finder, nor does the drive act like it would (the lights/sounds of the drive at time of mount) like it is being recognized at startup. One last odd thing about this drive, when TM had trouble and "sort of" locked up or slowed down the iMac as it lost the drive, Finder could still see it (I didn't try to move files to/from it though).
Just last week I bought a Maxtor 750GB drive (to replace until I get the WD drive back from warranty) and it lasted only 3 days. Now it, like the WD drive, is not visible. The only difference is that this drive doesn't sound right e.g. if you listen closely I think you can heard the internal mechanism clicking - bearings, drive head etc.? I'm not a HDD expert but I suspect something physical.
    I am suspicous that both drives would fail in such a similar way with similar results. The only things common that I can identify now are the following;
-Both drives are firewire (WD FW800 / Maxtor FW400)
-Both drives used as TimeMachine drives only
    -Both drives were new
-the location of the drives and iMac are not new - our older iMac and drives used to be mounted in the same location. The old Ext HDD's and iMac have been moved to a new location and they still work fine.
    - We have installed the latest Apple software updates as they became available and no other problems noted. However, it was during the last security update the the system locked up (from TimeMachine it appeared) and upon re-boot of the system we were no longer able to "see" that the drive was available.
-Both drives have only been connected to this new iMac
-No other Ext, HDD's have been used with this iMac
Until I get warrant details back from the manufacturer I am concerned what the source of the problems are. Is it two unique HDD's failures and nothing more? Is it TimeMachine? Is it my iMac?
I have invested a lot of time and money into large drives only to have them nothing more than paper weights in less then a week each.
I would love to hear of any suggestions or if others are having similar issues.

  • Mac G5 Won't boot. Won't boot from reinstall disc, doesn't recognize hard drives.

    Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my 2005 G5 and I've tried desperately to fix it over the past couple days.
It started with my G5 oddly booting up to OSX Leopard and missing numerous key features such as the dock, the abillity to restart/shut down from the menu, and I was also unable to drag icons around on the desktop. Though, weirdly enough, some programs would still launch.
My goal this week was to reinstall the OS to see if it would fix the problem. I tried numerous times to reinstall from boot via CD while holding C at startup. Also tried reinstall from an external harddrive, and USB, to no avail. I hold down option, and it doesn't detect the internal hard drive. I put in a new 500GB hard drive, still doesn't detect it, nor does it detect the install disc, USB, or external HD.
Since putting in a new harddrive, sometimes the computer will not go past a black screen, but occasionally sometimes will get a grey screen. Fans start spinning like crazy at this point.
So to recap, thus far: I removed the old hard drive and put in a new one, switched around ram, reset PRAM, took out and put back in the video card, tried to reinstall from CD. Still the same results, unable to boot past a grey or black screen, and unable to re-install the OS.
My only conclusion is that it could be a bad logic board.
Does anyone have any insight on this, or agree with my hypothesis? If so, I'll likely pick up a new one off ebay and have a go at installing it.

Is the External drive USB or Firewire? G5s won't see/boot USB drives as a rule?
Do you have another Mac around with Firewire?
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

  • Mac OS 9 doesn't recognize hard drive

I have an iMac G3 from the summer of 2001, running OS X 10.4.11. I would like to run Mac OS 9 on it, but when I boot from my 9.2.1 retail CD (white with orange 9) and open the Installer, it shows a blank gray box where I should be able to select the hard disk to install to. The option to proceed is grayed out, but if I click "Options" and check to "Clean Install" I can proceed. When it tries to check the hard disk for errors, it says it can't check it. The hard drive is formatted to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."

On the other hand, if you want to use OS 9 as Classic under OS X only
(a non-bootable situation, where you can run OS 9 apps only in Classic)
you could grab a copy of OS9 System and OS9 Applications from an
installed OS 9.1 or Later running computer.
I found that my un-used iBook G4's second dvd has a nice OS 9.2.2
installer on there which runs under OSX to provide this version as a
Classic 9 in OSX. It also will work to install a full bootable system to
an external drive, that can later be used as a Boot OS 9.2.2 in an
older Mac. (No drivers are required to install it as Classic in OS X.)
You need not format the drive to run an OS9 installer if you can
get the system and its application file/folders via another route.
And if you do not need a boot OS9 system from the internal HDD.
An external drive could do that job, and OS9 can run from it, too.
There are options... If you had a later OS X version, there also is
a utility which can partition a working OSX computer's hard drive
and then you could see see about installing OS9 on a partition
where OS9 drivers could exist. This is almost not worth it, if you
can drag-drop the OS9 working system parts into an OS X Mac.
And just use Classic. There are limits in what OS9 can do as Classic
and so some users require the bootable OS9 full system for some
applications or older apps that won't work well under OS X's Classic.
Working with disc images, you could get an OS9 system saved to
    a flash drive and load it into an older Mac that has no DVD drive;
and move it in without an installer, if Classic would be adequate.
The installer for a bootable OS9 system and that boot volume
requires the OS9 Driver; but a Classic system in OSX does not.
Hopefully the options may be helpful.
PS: the computer, if the one noted in your signature line, can
use much more RAM for OS X (including Classic) to run well.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Boots from disc, but doesn't recognize hard drive

I've got an 800mhz G4 iMac and it won't start up. It boots really slowly into the blue screen and then never passes that point. It's just a blue screen. I can move the mouse around, but nothing else happens and there's nothing for the mouse to manipulate.
It will boot from the optical drive and I'm trying to reinstall Panther (can't find Tiger upgrade discs...blast). But when it gets to the point in the installation where it asks which drive to install on, it gives me no options.
Is the HD dead? Anything I can do? Thanks for all your help in advance.

Try things in Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. Smokes link will help walk you thru it. You will need the Tiger disk to do this if you have Tiger installed. If your Panther disk is a 10.3.9 version, it will repair a Tiger installation. 10.3.9 only though.
Let us know what errors DU reports and if it was able to repair them.
Try these things before a re-install. You can try things in Apple doc.#106214; run fsck-you can run a repair with out the disk this way.
    Cheers!

  • I have tried and failed to copy my iTunes library and playlists from my Windows 8 desktop to my Windows 7 laptop using an external hard drive. Can it be done? Help would be appreciated.

I have tried and failed to copy my iTunes library and playlists from my Windows 8 desktop to my Windows 7 laptop using an external hard drive. Can it be done? Help would be appreciated. I have followed instructions found online but the library of music doesn't pull in.  Thanks!
    Nate

Migrate an iTunes library from one computer to another
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entireiTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one, with ratings, play counts, playlists etc. preserved. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd normally recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library and unlike copying with Windows Explorer the process can be resumed if it is interrupted and it will continue to the next item if there are any read/access errors.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See Make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Do not confuse (as you did) moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449

  • My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

Most probably, you have a 'private'-folder = part of an AVCHD-structure on your root-level of that drive.
Put it back into its folder (or any folder) - done.
    Don't rip AVCHD-folders apart!
