HP Laptop recovery on usb stick didn't work

I'm trying to perform a full recovery on an HP 2000 Notebook. When I got the notebook, I put the recovery info on a usb stick.  When I tried to use it ,it said it wasn't on there. When I loaded the stick it said it had done it, and to click finish. And, I already removed the info from the drive like they suggested, to save space. What now?

Hi,
Probably you did not follow the process to create the right bootable recovery set on USB. Noe please contact HP to get the right recovery media:

The only way out of Recovery mode is to connect to iTunes and restore. If you cannot access the computer you normally sync with, you will lose all of your content, unless you sync to iCloud. With no backup present, your content will be lost.

  • [SOLVED] Seriously, Arch? Recovery shell, USB boot won't work

So I made the mistake of updating my system without painstakingly checking the news/updates and possible error logs. I rebooted my computer this morning and:
    Decompressing Linux...Parsing ELF...done.
    Booting the kernel.
    :: Running Hook [resume]
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/sda3'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
    [rootfs /]#
This appears to be a pretty widespread problem today, as I've googled and searched the forums extensively and everyone is complaining about some udev to mkinitcpio movement or something.
I know what I need to do: either copy my files off my hard drive and reinstall, or chroot and downgrade my kernel, or chroot and reinstall udev, something like that.
Cool, so I need a liveCD. Unfortunately, my laptop lacks a CD drive (lenovo tablet). So I set out to make a USB bootable drive.
I tried it from Windows: my laptop didn't detect anything and kept kicking me back to the recovery shell. (Tried PartedMagic, Ubuntu, and Arch.)
I tried it from my school's Linux computers: Can't do *anything* without root. I tried sudo and for the first time in my life, the incident was reported and I got an email telling me not to try sudo again. Sweet.
I just tried it from my friend's Mac (the Arch x64 iso via Unetbootin): Now I get a blinking cursor when I boot from the USB.
What would you do? I'm at my wit's end here, and after using Archlinux for two years, this is giving me a MAJORLY bad taste in my mouth for the distro.

    karol,
I can only change parameters from the grub menu, as far as I can tell, and I tried (hd0,{0,1,2,3,4}) and none of them worked. Only (hd0,0) gets me even as far as the recovery shell.
    fsckd,
I'm using Unetbootin, which offers Core, Core_x64, Netinstall, and Netinstall_x64. Because I intend to chroot an x64 system, I tried core_x64.
    willbprog127,
Yeah, you're right - sorry for being snarky. Thanks, please do let me know if you find that parameter.
I booted from the usb stick on one of my school's RHEL computers, and it says "no operating system detected". I'm...so...sad...why didn't unetbootin work...going to try to burn ubuntu again.

  • Time machine backup from USB stick doesn't work

    Hi all,
I've got an MacBook Air (1st gen) with Lion, with a 80GB internal HD. This HD is quite full now, so I decided to move my rather large iPhoto library (c. 30GB) to an external 64GB USB stick. Up to that point, everything worked well.
I'd like to include the USB stick to my Time Machine Backup. The USB Stick is formatted as HFS+. It appears in the list of excluded drives in the Time Machine setup. If I click the 'minus' button to remove it from that list, it goes away, but comes back as soon as I leave the TM setup and reopen it. Accordingly, Time Machine does not generate any backups of the USB stick. The external Backup has enough free space to make a backup, so this should not be the problem.
Any ideas how I could fix that problem?
A workaround could be to use a 3rd party tool to backup the library. I tried Carbon Copy Cloner, but CC can not do incremental backups of bundles. Any recommendations?

I am having the same issue on my macbook air (end 2010)
I bought a 32gb usb stick and Time Machine always excludes it.
I assume that Time Machine should be able to backup it.
Could it be because it is a USB stick and not a USB hard drive ?
Also as a workaround could be make that a usb stick is reconnized as a hard drive ?
    Any recommendations?
    thanks

it is able to detect the usb stick. When I tried to install, it tells me that I need Java Runtime 6. I click on install Java 6 and it tell me that pack200 is not working. Tried downloading Java 7, it sitll does not work. search on the community and found the terminal commands to revert back to Java 6. This screwed up my skype and itunes. both application cannot connect to internet. All browsers are still working as well as Parallels 7 with no issue. • Wireless USB-Stick: Netgear WG111 works on PB G4 but not on iMac G4-800

    Hello!
Please help me to solve this weird problem: I found some drivers that allow me to use the WiFi-USB-Stick WG111 from Netgear on OS X. It works perfectly with my Powerbook G4-1.67, but it won't be recognised in the Network Status Pane of my iMac G4-800. On the pane "active ports" it is recognised, but not on the "Network status" pane. Obviously, on the PB-G4 it is recognised on both panes.
The application that comes with the drivers recognises the USB-stick, it detects my access point, but can't connect to it.
That's weird. What could it be?
I thought it could be the USB 1.0 port of the iMac G4, but apparently other MacUsers were able to connect with it on older G3-macs with USB 1.0 ports.
    Help would be appreciated!
    Martin

This is where the version 1.0 drivers are. They say G4 only, but I have it working fine on my G3 400Mhz iMac. It was really slow with 128bit wep encryption, so I backed off to the 64bit on my router and it is plenty fast. Go to remember that the encryption is handled completely by the CPU on thes little guys.

  • USB stick no longer working after upgrade to 10.5.8

    Hello,
On one my older Macbook Pros I just recently did the recommended upgrade to 10.5.8. Since then none of my memory sticks are longer being displayed in the finder window.
    Things that I have done
    -reboot
-made sure that external drives are being dispalyed
-In System Profile under USB I can see the hardware. If I try another brand USB key I can see the change in System Profile.
-Other USB devices like mouse and printer are working ok
-I have also tried an external hard drive
All of these devices use to work fine are working fine on my newer Macbook Pros that are running 10.6.x
Has anyone come across this ?

  • A system recovery was performed on my pc. When I re-installed firefox all my bookmarks had disappeared. This happened more than a wk ago so the solution of recovery for 5 days didn't work. Is there any way to recover them from more than 7 days ago?

On Jun 19 my pc wouldn't load Windows & HP decided to do a system recovery on my pc on Jun 20.
Prior to the system recovery being performed all of my files & programs were burned onto discs.
A few days after the recovery was performed I re-installed Firefox. It was the same day that the newest version of Firefox was released. I was unable to reload the version I was previously using (I believe that it was version 4).
After re-installing Firefox I discovered that I lost all of my Firefox bookmarks.
I thought that the bookmarks would be on the back-up discs but I can't find them on the system recovery files that I loaded onto my pc.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a HP G60 series laptop.

    Thanks for the info.
I did find the folder as described above. Under Profiles the sub-directory I found was: t6jyvmtf.default
There are 2 files in that sub-directory:
blocklist - which is an XML document &
bookmarks - which is Firefox document
When I selected bookmarks the document that opened does not contain (to my knowledge) the bookmarks.
The heading for the page is '''''Bookmarks''''' & right underneath that heading is '''Get Bookmark Add-ons'''
Underneath that is a heading '''Bookmarks Toolbar Folder''' with the following under it:
Add bookmarks to this folder to see them displayed on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Getting Started & Latest Headlines
That is followed by the heading '''Mozilla Firefox''' which has the following underneath it:
Help and Tutorials, Customize Firefox, Get Involved & About Us
I checked each of the items that could be selected but none of them had my bookmarks.
I also checked the blocklist XML document - it opened Windows Internet Explorer with what appears to be programming language (although I could be wrong). At the top of the document it says - ?xml version="1.0" ?
    followed by
    - <blocklist xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/addons-blocklist">
Should I be selecting one of the above to find the bookmarks & I'm just not seeing it?

  • Connecting mac mini to USB monitor didn't work!!

I connected new Mac mini(2007 model) with the latest HP USB monitor. Nothing got displayed on the monitor. Then I need to connect mac-mini to another VGA connector monitor. But still want to know to connect USB monitor with mac-mini as this is my target setup.

    Thank you.
I used Tiger OS specific drivers from the following link.
    www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.php
Now it's working but not 100%. Upon starting of the mac-mini monitor works fine. But later when I switch off and switch on the monitor, then it doesn't work. Looks like monitor off -on trigger is not handled in the driver.
I will check with the driver like you have suggest and then acknowledge.

  • USB Stick

I recently bought a 120mb mp3 player/ usb stick in europe at the Media Markt. It was a great buy, pretty cheap with 128mb and it plays mp3s!
last week i plugged it in the back of my laptop, but then my gf wanted to sit down on my chair, so i accidently picked up the laptop and moved it. when i was concentrated on the computer again, i saw the usb-stick and it was crooked! before i had moved the laptop, it was mounted and i was accessing files on the stick. Now since  i saw it crooked, i plugged it out without mounting and i trying to straighten.
when it was good again, Arch Linux couldn't recognize it. i checked dmesg and it said "device will not accept address" and then a number. each time that i would plug it in, the number would increase by one. i switched over to M$ XP and the usb stick didn't work either.
i thought that maybe the usb pins inside the mp3 had broken, so i opened it to inspect it. i grabbed a voltmeter and i checked that everything was good. and yes it was!
when the usb was working fine, i would just plug in the usb stick while it was on and then it would turn on by itself and display on the screen "USB".  The files are trapped inside. Since i can't mount it anywhere, the mp3 files still play, but i can't access the data files.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? is there any hope that i can get the usb stick working again?
btw, the stick is a TIME stick. it's the small one with purple around it. since it was 33 euros, there's no features on it. it just plays mp3s and is also a storage usb.

My USB stick is dying on me too: yesterday it was working just fine. I was installing Cygwin/X on it on a Windows XP computer, but I stopped the install after a few percent since copying a few thousand files over USB 1.0 (the stick is USB 2.0, the controller was 1.0) takes a lot of time.
In the end, I installed Cygwin/X to a dir on the hard disk, RAR'ed the dir and copied the .rar file to the stick (took about 30 seconds).
This morning I wanted to access the stick on my own computer running Arch, but I only got a partial dirlisting after mounting it. I tried unmounting it, but this didn't work (device busy). I yanked it out, and tried to remount it, but this time it wouldn't even mount. This is the error I got:

I've tried the stick on two of my computers, one of them running Arch and giving the above error message, the other one running Windows98 SE. Both computers have been able to access the stick just fine. They both also have a USB 1.0 controller. Unfortunately, none of them can read the stick anymore.
So now I'm testing the stick on a computer at school, running Windows 2000 SP4 with a USB 2.0 controller on-board.
The disk is shown in My Computer, but I can't access it. Just like in Windows98.
Furthermore, when I put the stick in a USB-connector, the LED flashes a few times as usual, but then it stays on for as long as it's in the computer.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to save quite a lot of data from the stick?

  • [SOLVED] Installation on UEFI from usb stick

    Greetings,
I'm trying to figure out this uefi thing and install arch on my laptop.
I swear, I've been trying so many times now that I have a headache. My girlfriend too because of all my ranting.
I downloaded the latest arch iso and "burned" it to a usb stick (my laptop lack a cdrom).
I booted with the first option and went through the whole installation progress to the grub installing part MANY times before realizing I was doing it all wrong and I had to start from a UEFI shell.
Now I started from the UEFI shell and I just have no idea what I'm doing, the beginner guide doesn't seem to explain this.
I should probably wait until my headache pass and I'm fresh and ready to start over but I'm one stubborn guyif there is one and I had enough of failing, I want it to work.
What do I do from the UEFI shell?
Do I have to reinstall everything from scratch, partitioning and all or I can just get back to the part where I have to install grub? What do I do?
Thanks in advance and sorry if I'm asking stupid questions or something but, honestly, I failed so many times that my frustration is seriously high.

    Hi,
this is basically what I followed and it worked for me:
make an archlinux uefi usb stick (it's a bit different than a normal one). Use a live ubuntu cd or something, so you don't have to use windows:
#format your usb key on /dev/sdXY to fat32 (replace XY with the right device, in the following code too)
    sudo su
    wget http://mirror.us.leaseweb.net/archlinux/iso/2013.08.01/archlinux-2013.08.01-dual.iso
    mkdir -p /mnt/{usb,iso}
    mount -o loop archlinux-2013.08.01-dual.iso /mnt/iso
    awk 'BEGIN {FS="="} /archisolabel/ {print $3}' /mnt/iso/loader/entries/archiso-x86_64.conf | xargs mkfs.vfat -F32 /dev/sdXY -n
    mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/usb
    cp -a /mnt/iso/* /mnt/usb
    sync
    umount /mnt/{usb,iso}
    full instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … B_from_ISO
now you have the instalation usb ready.
When I did this, i could still go to choose my boot device and i had a normal usb key boot option and an uefi shell usb key option, see if you have something like that to be sure you have the uefi boot. you should see an uefi shell and it should boot automatically as a normal archlinux live usb. if it doesn not (happend to me before) run ./start.sh or something like that (it should say in the uefi shell what to run). If that doesn not work, then the uefi usb key didn't work.
okay if you've successfully booted the uefi usb you have to format your drive so it has the uefi boot partition mounted inside the grup folder, so there has to be a ef00 partition on the begining
This is my actuall install script, it will wipe your drive, make 5 partitions (uefi boot, boot, swap, root, home) and then mount them, install arch and then chroot into that
    modprobe efivars
    #configure this as you wish
    SWAPSIZE=4G
    ROOTSIZE=50G
    DRIVE=sda
#these two lines are horrible, you could manually use gdist and format the drive as you wish, as this will just wipe it clean and make the partion table that I have.
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/$DRIVE bs=1M count=1k
    echo "2\no\ny\nn\n\n\n+100M\nef00\nn\n\n\n+100M\n\nn\n\n\n+${SWAPSIZE}\n8200\nn\n\n\n+${ROOTSIZE}\n\nn\n\n\n\n\np\nw\ny\n" | gdisk /dev/$DRIVE
    mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/${DRIVE}1
    mkfs.ext2 -L boot /dev/${DRIVE}2
    mkswap -L swap /dev/${DRIVE}3
    mkfs.ext4 -L root /dev/${DRIVE}4
    mkfs.ext4 -L home /dev/${DRIVE}5
    swapon /dev/${DRIVE}3
    mount /dev/${DRIVE}4 /mnt
    mkdir /mnt/home
    mount /dev/${DRIVE}5 /mnt/home
    mkdir /mnt/boot
    mount /dev/${DRIVE}2 /mnt/boot
#this is the magic uefi part for grub
    mkdir /mnt/boot/efi
    mount /dev/${DRIVE}1 /mnt/boot/efi
    pacstrap /mnt base base-devel zsh
    genfstab -U -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
    arch-chroot /mnt
After doing that, you have can install the system as you wish and for the grub I do this:
I had problems a few times if i copy pasted all these lines at once, so now i copy paste them one at a time, (I know it should not make a difference but still, sometimes it didn't work)
    # i do this in chmod too, though I'm not sure if it's really necessary
    modprobe efivars
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    echo "installing efi grup thingy"
    pacman -S --noconfirm efibootmgr grub-efi-x86_64
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck --debug
    mkdir -p /boot/grub/locale
    cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and this is all i have in my install script file and uefi works fine.  I hope you'll get it running soon

Hi, in preparation for my new machine, got a quick question.

if you don't want to do all that above just formate to NTFS file system then when you start the backup you will be prompted to create rescue media select yes this will allow the USB to boot to predesktop recovery environment

  • USB stick dies in iMac, another won't read, what's happening?

Hi there. I have recently had the experience of a USB stick (4GB) die in my iMac. I plugged it in, an error dialog box came up saying that one USB device was drawing too much power... the port on the USB stick had gone very warm and there was a burning smell coming from the device.. Since then, the same box comes up whenever I plug in the stick from whatever port on the computer or from the USB hub that I have attached to the Mac. I've bought another stick thinking that one is now dead but the new one is not even seen by my Mac, I plug it in and... nothing, it doesn't show up anywhere.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi Philippe Mion;
Try the suggestions listed here. Hopefully your bad USB stick didn't burn out the logic board in you iMac.
