HP Laptop Won't boot from Recovery CD. (bios is set correctly) Jumpers? Faulty Optical Drive?

Won't boot from HP Recovery CD. Bios is set for ATAPI CD/dvd as priority. Boot menu only shows HD.
More detailed:
Purchased HP recovery CD's from Hp. Put the CD in, went into the bios, set it up so the CD/dvd rom would be priorty in boot device. Saved and exited. Computer reboots, I press f9 to select from boot menu, Only the hard drive is shown. The ATAPI CD/dvd rom drive is not...I reboot and let it go past the first screen.
BOOTMGR is missing.
Press Ctrl alt delete to restart.
^^ That is where I am at. The CD-rom drive is functional, it spins, it works. The bios has it recognized.
(This computer DOES NOT have an OS, so I am trying to put a fresh install in it. The CD is bootable, it came from HP saturday. I tested it on my Desktop and it boots like a charm.
Help me please HP ;].

Hi! In your situation, I recommend ordering the recovery media from Toshiba. I'm thinking that your OS has been corrupted by a Virus and you no longer have the hidden recovery partition. I have replied on the other message also. If you have further questions, I will try to answer them as best I can. You can get the Toshiba recovery media here. Scroll down to the bottom to find recovery media.

  • Laptop won't boot from recovery disk, can't find recovery partition

My sister asked to again "fix" her Toshiba laptop because it was full of viruses. The last time, I had to reformat it in order to completely remove all the junk toolbars, etc. I saw all the junk programs again and decided it would be quicker and easier to reformat it again (I backed it up first) but something went wrong. It will not reinstall the OS. It will not boot from the system repair disk. I have set up and reformatted multiple computers and I have never ever had this issue occur. Startup repair runs for a while, says it can't automatically fix the laptop, lists "No OS installed" among errors. I've tried going into the BIOS and making various changes. The recovery partition seems to be gone and the repair disk is of no use. Does anyone have any suggestions? Because I'm looking at buying a new hard drive. I think it got corrupted by a virus or me doing something wrong, even though I did everything I did the last time.

  • Satellite L850-161 won't boot from recovery disk

When I got the laptop in 2012 I created 4 recovery disks but since then i've had my HDD replaced in my SATELLITE L850-161 but it has the recovery partition with nothing in it and the laptop won't boot from disk either so I can't format it but really need to, any suggestions??

If you have 4 recovery discs be sure you start installation with disc number 1. After HDD exchange you should be able to use created recovery discs for recovery image installation.
Does some other bootable disc starts properly?
To be honest I dont understand how new HDDD can contain recovery partition that will be created if recovery image installation works.
Problem is that in such situation you dont have many options. In worst case you can order original recovery disc for your machine.

  • Need help! MSI laptop won't boot from SSD

Hello, I bought an MSI GP60 2PE Leopard 4 months ago, and recently decided to upgrade its hard drive to an SSD.
However, after cloning my C drive (my boot drive) directly to the SSD, the laptop refuses to boot from it. It can detect the drive and I can access the files from it (when I open up My Computer, the drive shows up as drive F). But, when I swap out the hard drive with this SSD, it says "no media detected" when booting up.
The SSD i bought is a 128GB Kingston SSD if this information helps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Follow Darkhawk's simple guide https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=179716.0. Cloning seems to end in tears & having to use this method anyway. FWIW, I stupidly tried to clone when I installed a SSD few mths back & naturally it didn't work, wasting a few hrs in the process. This method works first time/everytime.

  • Satellite A200 won't boot from recovery disk

I need to reinstall the notebook but every time I boot from CD it won't.
I tried every boot disk ( xp pro, xp home, Toshiba recovery disk ) at house but none of it works.
The recovery disk boots (windows is loading) but after loading my laptop restarts.

    > Try to run Recocery CD under Windows and then choose reinstall option from cd menu
Something like that is not possible using the Toshiba Recovery disk
    > tried every boot disk ( xp pro, xp home, Toshiba recovery disk ) at house but none of it works.
In my opinion your CD/DVD drive can not read the inserted medias and therefore its not possible to restore the operating system.
I think the CD/DVD drive should be checked by an notebook technician and if necessary it should be replaced.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot from recovery disc

Hi, I've got an early 1998 15" MacBook Pro that came with Leopard I think, but I've upgraded along the way and was running Mountain Lion when trouble started. A few months ago it started randomly crashing and restarting, then progressed to not starting up but sitting on the grey screen.
After reading some of the discussions on this and following the suggestions there, such as verifying and repairing the disk and the disk permissions, clearing the nvram etc, I took it in for a service and had the hardware checked - no problems found but the battery was replaced as it was pretty dead. A few days later the laptop started doing the same thing again.
I backed up, downloaded a recovery disc to USB (on a Linux computer as mine was not compliant) although there was already a recovery disk on the laptop, and then erased the hard drive. This was pretty difficult as by this time all it could do was sit on the grey screen for a a bit and then restart, never actually booting up, but finally it worked.
Now it won't boot to the recovery disc, either on the laptop or on the USB drive.
Startup pressing Command R does not get me anywhere but the grey screen. Startup pressing Option usually shows me a picture of the Recovery disc but clicking on it gets nothing but the grey screen. With both, there's either a freeze or a continuous spontaneous restart. I also tried telling it I'd install Linux if it didn't want to let me reinstall Mountain Lion, but it did not respond to that either.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be really grateful. The hard drive showed no problems in the test the service guys did and when I run verify disk it also shows not problems.

This is where you would install OS X, so yes, you need a hard drive.

  • X205-Sli1 won't boot from recovery cds or bootable disk, even though dvd recognized in bios

I've searched the forum, but haven't found any answers as to why I can see my cd/dvd rom in bios as the first bootable media on the list, but F12 won't list it as a device I can boot to.  The bios version is the latest (2.5).  The cd/dvd works just fine in windows safe mode.  I can run "install.exe" to do a full recovery of the hd, but when the machine reboots, it doesn't boot from the cd.  I've put other bootable cds/dvds in the drive and the machine just bypasses it.
Help!  The hard drive is dying and many windows files are corrupt.
Even tried to boot from a usb toshiba floppy, and the machine wouldn't recognize the floppy under f12 menu, but sees it in bios.
    Thanks,

color me lost... you state that you've done a restore to factory config but there are still corrupt windows files???
when you've done the complete recovery, have you elected to format and install fresh?
barring that, have you attempted to wipe the C drive to eliminate the possibility of an unwanted critter hiding out and reinfecting your machine during the reload process???
yes, this is possible... especially if some critter has the smarts to infect the hidden partition or one of the restoration checkpoints...
yes^2, there are critters out there with these types of smarts :?

  • Won't Boot from recovery disc

First let me say thank you in advance for any light you might be able to shed on my problem.  Here's the problem -
I have a Satellite x205-Sli.  I got an email for a BIOS update so followed the link and proceeded to install.  After trying twice, I kept getting a "not responding" message during installation.  I quit and went into excel.  I find that my keyboard is not working.  I decide to do a system restore and roll back to a time prior to last updates.  I go to the kitchen and come back to find a grey screen.  Nothing is moving, everything appears stuck.  I try to shut down and restart.  Hard drive will not boot.  I get recovery disc and try to boot.  Still no luck.  This is where I am stuck.  I am unsure if my holding down "C" to start from the recovery disc is not being recognized because the keyboard was not working or if there is another issue.  All I know is I cannot get my system to boot at all.  Any ideas or help out there?
    Thanks a ton!!!

Try repeatedly pressing F2 immediately after pressing the power button and see if it will at least take you to the laptops BIOS screen (usually blue with a lot of hardware options).  If you can do this, you could try going back to the toshiba site on a secondary computer, redownloading the BIOS update accept follow the secondary manual install procedure (usually requires a disc to be burned or put on a USB drive).  By not completely loading the BIOS update correctly, you may have corrupted your BIOS firmware which is the essential hard coded software on the motherboard that tells the system how to initially load everything before handing it all off to Windows when windows starts.  All that "start up" form the BIOS is what happens with the laptops POSTs or shows you the "Toshiba" screen initially for 3 to 5 seconds as soon as you turn the system on.  Let me know if this helps.

  • Windows 8 HP Pavillion Laptop won't boot from cd?

    Hello everyone,
I have a Windows 8 HP Pavillion Laptop. I've forgotten the password to my account, but I wasn't worried because I had a recovery disk. However, even with the cd in the laptop, I've directed to the login page each time. I want the cd to run instead and recover my account! I've enabled Legacy in BIOS and disable Safe Boot, and I've even changed startup order to put CD startup first. None of it's working though. Can anyone help me? I'd really like to access my laptop soon.
    Thanks,
    Alice

  • HP Compaq 6715s laptop won't boot on battery after BIOS update

    Hello!
I got this laptop on Ebay. The power controller was not working. Then I got it replaced with another, from a deffective motherboard. The laptop performed very well afterward.
And then I downloaded the latest BIOS version from the HP support page. Flashing went OK, but now it wont boot on battery anymore. The initial boot screen shows, the power light flashes in amber color a few times and the machine shuts down.
With the charger connected to the laptop everything is well. If I boot on with charger connected and later disconnect it is OK too.
Please, advice me what should I do.

    what type of your laptop?
BIOS recovery way that has been updated failed
    1. download bios start, then extract with winrar or winzip.
    2. initials instead of one file (depending on the type of your laptop)
    3. save the file by using the flash disc (which has been in the FAT format)
    4. dis boot with a flash in the following manner:
          a. off laptop batteries
          b. jack flash disc
          c. Do not plug the power cable
          c. press tobol (window + B) hold, while plug the power cord and turn on the laptop
    5. akn laptop turns on and lights will flash 2x flash disc, the laptop will be read and will die, and came back on, and die back, and terkhir restarts with BIOS recovery.

  • T42 Won't Boot from CD

Hi.  I have an IBM T42 that is getting a blue screen of death at login.  I wan't to reinstall windows but the machine won't boot from the CD.  It seems like the CD-RW drive is not recognized at all because I don't hear any noises from it upon startup, and the windows boot reverts to the hard drive every time.  I have changed the boot order in BIOS so that ATAPI CD0 is first and if I hit F12 at startup ATAPI CD0 comes up first.
The CD I am using is a copy of XP Pro that I got from the IT guy at work.  If I put the CD into a newer Lenovo laptop I have it boots from the CD, no problem.  The operating system installed on both laptops is XP Pro, SP2.
I noticed in the BIOS boot priority there is a USB CD.  Is it possible to connect an external CD ROM via usb and boot from that even though there are no drivers installed?  Any other ideas?  I am not too technical but am good at following directions.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Colin

If you have an USB CD-ROM drive, then you should be able to boot off of that by going into the BIOS and changing the boot order to be USB device first.

  • DVD drive won't boot from Leopard or Tiger disks

    Hi,
I have had some issues booting from the OS install disks with my DVD drive, is it the drive or is it the software?
    Can this be fixed?
    Thanks
    Tom

There are known issues with some Leopard discs not booting, but if your Tiger disc won't boot either, I would say you probably have a defective optical drive.

  • Computer won't boot from any disk, including recovery.

When I try to boot from the main drive, I get this http://i.imgur.com/9Adq5NI.jpg screen.
When I boot from recovery I get the apple logo and it shuts off.
So I have an Ubuntu district I'm using,
    How do I fix this?

Well let's start from the beginning. I was being an idiot and messing around with unix commands and created a directory in \usr\, and went to command line delete it with rm -rf \usr\ DO NOT DO THIS!!! I canceled it before it could do damage to personnel files etc. but it destroyed the OS. So with your advice I created a small partition of the disk and copied over personnel files.
