HP LaserJet 1018 and the MacBook

So, I bought a HP LaserJet 1018 printer this weekend because they were on sale. I have some friends who are using a very similar printer, if not the same one, on their iMac and iBook, so I figured it'd be a safe bet.
After buying it, then doing the research (I know, wrong order), I found out that, normally this wouldn't be a problem but in recent months, HP removed the driver you could use to let this printer communciate with the Mac.
The short story is not I have a printer I can't use with my MacBook. Since it's such a popular printer, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I could do before I pack it up and bring it back for a return. I've already followed the instructions on this website: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=40933&page=6 and I couldn't find the driver I'd allegedly installed anywhere when I tried to add the printer.
Any help would be greatly aprpeciated.

Thats a good thought on the 1012. Actually, I believe all of teh HP LJ 1010 series printers will use the same driver.
I'm having an HP related printing problem as well... quite different than this, but driver related all the same. THe other thing that makes me mad is that HP usually packages their drivers in an installer... you can't just get to the individual driver file. So if your trying to install anetworked printer and the printer isn't in Apple's Pick list, you can't install it. Pointing to the disk does no good because the disk just contains the compressed installer. (And most of the "home marketed" HP printers are only supported through USB or a direct connection these days, so you are SOL.)
I'm anxious to try that driver link posted above and see if it will help me... Though I'm away on business right now and will have to wait to get home to give it a go.

hold the power button down for 5 seconds to perform a force shut down. Then restart and see what happens.

  • Final Cut Express HD and the Macbook Pro

I just purchased a Macbook Pro along with final cut express HD. After purchase I read that FCE HD won't work with the macbook pro. I was hoping to see if anyone knew if they were coming out with an upgrade to the universal version like they are with Final Cut Pro.
Intel based macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

That will not work. Ian's solution is for dual core G5s and PCIe based iMacs. It does not address Intel based machines like the 2006 iMac and the MacBook Pro. These machines will have to wait till the end of March for the release of new Universal Binary software to run on them. It's possible FCE3 will never run and will need to be upgraded to another version. If you recently purchased FCE HD to run it on this new computer, I'd suggest, if you can, to return it until the position on the new software becomes clear.

icloud emails are not coming through on my imac, though the gmail is ok.  The icloud emails are coming through fine on the iphone and the macbook.  Any ideas?

On the iMac, open System Preferences > iCloud

Give iCloud a minute or two to re sync the data.

  • Pros and cons of the macbook air and the macbook pro

    Hi!
This coming year, my younger daugter will go to high school and need a macbook because she is dyslectic. I want to know which one between the macbook air and the macbook pro will be the best for her. Thanks for your answer.

At least according to their web site, Whitesmoke Executive is not compatible with the Mac operating system.
Word Q does have a Mac version. http://www.goqsoftware.com/products/
I was unable to figure out what software package you meant by Antidote. There are several.
Word, of course, is part of MS Office, and they make a Mac OS version. I use Office 2011 daily.
None of these products are likely to tax the hardware of either of the computers you mention at all. The computer will be spending most of its time waiting for your daughter to do something.
Note - my neice just bought a MacBook Air 11". She is entering the University of South Carolina in the fall and is absolutely thrilled with the computer.

I believe my macbook pro hard drive is bad.  I erased the drive and reinstalled the OS and the macbook still runs really slow.  I dont know if the hard drive is the issue.

Did you try an SMC reset too? It's easily done and none of those resets to the best of my knowledge hurt anything. When I was fooling with my system, which at one point was a home made Fusion setup, I needed to reset the SMC sometimes to get the drives recognized. Reading the documentation the sudden motion sensor is drive related but that seems to be about it.
Some more specifics may be needed about the drive itself, the model number of your unit, and the OS version you're running.
At present, the problem seems sort of odd to me. FWIW cable problems can be quite intermittent. I used Scannerz to find some of the problems on my original system that I later converted to a new HD and SSD combo. It can find lots of problems if you learn how to use it right (HD problems, logic board system faults, and cable problems) but you need to get a system at least partially up and running to use it, and it doesn't sound to me like your there right now (in other words, don't go out and buy it because at this point I don't know how it could help you)
Another word of advice would be to not go out and start throwing parts at a problem unless you have a good idea what the source of the problem is. If you have a logic board problem, new drives and new cables won't make it go away, you'll just be wasting your money. Logic board problems, cable problems, and drive problems can all have very similar end user symptoms. The article that I linked above named "Hard Drive Problems" has a section on general symptoms of problems and if you read the article it becomes clear there's a lot of overlap associated with different types of problems.
I assume that your unit isn't under warranty. If, by chance it is I wouldn't even fool with it and I'd take it to Apple and let them deal with the problem. You also might want to check with whatever Apple sources you have available to test your system, like an Apple store, and see how much they'll charge (if anything) to evaluate the system.
    I certainly hope this helps.

  • HP LaserJet 1018 and Windows 8.1

    Hello,
I was trying to select the "Print directly to the Printer" option under my 1018's printer properties, but I keep getting the following:
    "Printer Properties
Printer settings could not be saved
    The specified datatype is invalid"
Can anyone instruct me as to how to fix this?  Please let me know ASAP.  Thanks!

    Hello Candi_970,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that when you try to set the printer setting "Print directly to the Printer" for the Laserjet 1018 on Windows 8.1, but it will not allow it.
You could try running the Print and Scan Dr on the computer. This will not allow you to set the "Print directly to the Printer" setting, but it could fix a driver or software issue the is preventing it.
Let me know if this has helped.

  • Port replicators and the MacBook

I want to have a monitor and a keyborad that I can hook up to when I get to my office. Is there no port replicators like I had for my Dell laptop when I was a PCer?
I have found that the MB needs an adaptor from the DVI Mini to the DVI to use another monitor...but is there a keyboard port that I can just plug a new KB in? Does it have to be Mac?
Sorry but I have not recieved the MB in the mail and I am already full of questions.
    Thanks
    MB   Windows XP
    MBP   Windows XP

    Welcome to the forum...
you can plug it to your usb por for the keyboard thing...
there is no port replicator right now but I bet there will be either by apple or by third party soon.
But if you have more budget, go with apple bluetooth wireless keyboard, since the MAcBook has built in blue tooth in their MAcBook.
It doesn't have to be a Mac, but it is easier to use it since the simbols and the layout is slightly differ.
And for external monitor, make sure which interface your external monitor use, for some of older and even recent model still using VGA HDDB-15 interface, and it need mini DVI to VGA adapter.
    Good Luck.

  • Question re: 1920x1200 RGB LED Display and the Macbook Pros LED display.

My question to the Apple guys here is. What type of LED technology is used in the MacBook Pro's LED display?
I just did a side by side with my buddies new 15" MBP and my new DELL Studio 1737 which has a 1920x1200 which has RGB LED display. I had it second day air FEdEx shipped because I was dying to see this new tech.
And did it blow us away, supposedly since its this new RGB LED it displays something around 98% or 110% of the NTSC color gamut very accurate for graphics and photo work.
My buddy almost dropped when we saw the color accuracy and differences with the MBP. And why hasn't Apple adopted this superior technology?

What do you mean they don't have LED its right on the main page.
Read it carefully, it says "Ultrathin 15-inch LED-backlit display." The "LED-backlit display" part means that the backlighting is LED (as opposed to fluorescent), not the display panel itself (which is LCD).
...Dell has the RGB LED backlighting....
The Dell display you referred to is an RGB LED display, it doesn't have (or need) backlighting. It uses red, green and blue light emitting diodes to produce images, as opposed to a liquid crystal display, which uses color filtered backlighting to produce images.
its confusing why Apple has not adopted this new tech to its high end $3,000 MBP 17 models.
Yet. The 17" MBPs are reportedly due for a significant hardware revision next month. In any case, RGB LED displays have their own performance issues when compared to LCD displays, so don't get too excited, and they may not be thin enough to fit Apple's ultrathin design philosophy.
I have no idea what RGB LED was it just seemed better, and boy did it pay off.
I'm sure you'll have loads of fun with Windows Vista.

  • Macbook and the Macbook Pro Adapter

Recently my Macbook power supply failed. So i sent it off to Apple for a replacement. While waiting for the replacement to arrive I have been using a Macbook Pro power supply, which im sure some of you are aware is a higher voltage. Now my Macbook is randomly turning off. Ive been advised to backup and wipe the machine and do a long overdue reinstall.
My 1 year warranty runs out in three weeks so i have to be quick if I want to send it back for repair. Could the Macbook Pro Adapter cause these issues ? Im expecting the replacement Macbook power adapter back in the next couple of days should i try it with this or send it straight to Apple ?

No, the MacBook Pro adapter is perfectly safe on a MacBook.
If you look at the box on the larger power adapter in the Apple Store, it even says it's fine for MacBook and MacBook Pro. The small power adapter box says MacBook only.
The difference between the adapters isn't voltage, it's maximum current capability.

  • Final Cut and the MacBook

Does anyone use Final Cut Pro with the MacBook. How is it? I have heard mixed results.

    With
rendering and encoding only… which is independant of
the GPU. You need to be very careful with these
reports as they do not always give the wider picture
    as to performance.
    So is this a NO?
What type of projects can you do with MB/Final/Motion?

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)
