HP Laserjet 1100 - print fails

Hi
I have an OLD HP Laserjet 1100 which I used to be able to print from fine on my old XP (SP2) machine. I have recently set the printer up on a new laptop running XP (SP3) using a parallel to USB converter. It's using the same drivers. However, now, whenever I try print I get an immediate message saying "Print failed". Doesnt give me a reason. Just won't print!! If there is anyone out there who can help me I'd appreciate it!
Regards,
AEC
p.s. Buying a new printer is unfortunately not really an option.

Hi there.  This is funny, or sad really.  I have the exxact problem.  When it doesn't print it says this printer is not connected.
That just can't be.  What about firmware?  While nosing around the HP site I noticed it says firmware needs to be updated.
I'm not sure how to do this.
Have a great day,
Zarifa

  • [SOLVED] Can't get CUPS to add / detect HP Laserjet 1100 printer

I moved my computer downstairs... after a few weeks I decided to move my printer down and set it up. I had it working perfectly a few weeks ago before the move... however now I can't get CUPS to detect or add my printer. At first when I moved my printer downstairs the CUPS web interface had my previous setup still there and had my printer detected / added. However, printing jobs would just stay in the queue and never print. I did some googling and someone mention to remove the printer and re-add it. Well I tried to to that and got stuck on trying to re-add it. CUPS will not identify my printer now. Funny thing is I just now remember I had a similiar issue a few months back and I remembered now I fixed the queue issue just by unplugging the power to my printer and leaving it off for 5min then replugging it in. I have tried all the steps on the wiki and I can't seem to figure this one out. dmesg does output that it is detecting my printer. I have my printer hooked up via a mini parralel to USB cord. If you have any other questions for me please shoot
Unplugging and repluggin my printer gives me this msg in dmesg:
    usblp0: removed
usb 6-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
usb 6-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 4 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x4348 pid 0x5584
hp-toolbox also does not detect any printers. I have tried restarting cupsd... Any help is appreciated... I need to get printing up ASAP since school has started.
lsusb output this amongst other things:
Bus 006 Device 004: ID 4348:5584 WinChipHead CH34x printer adapter cable
If it matters I am using XFCE as my DE... I also do not remember using the CUPS interface to intially add the printer... I do not exactly remember how I did it... but the web interface looked completely new to me and I am rather sure that is not how I initially went about doing it... perhaps I used some GUI frontend for it...
EDIT: After reading the forum descriptions closer... perhaps this should be moved to the Workstation section.

skottish wrote:I'm curious why you're using gutenprint drivers for a HP printer. hplip provides everything needed for HP printers.
Tell you the truth... I have no idea how to change it or what not... I didn't even add that manually... just rebooted my computer one day and it appeared there.
hpsetup does not detect my printer
system-config-printer gives me an error when I try and add a printer. I manually specify the location to file:/dev/usb/lp0 ... I scroll down find HP LaserJet 1100 and the recommended driver is hpjis 3.9.8. I select that and I get the following:
There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-not-possible'
EDIT: I am about ready to chunk to this printer out the window... I have been messing with this for about a week now and I just keep getting two steps forward and then three steps backwards.
The system-config-printer dialog looked familiar and I believe that when I intially was able to set up my printer and had it working upstairs I used that dialog to add my printer.
Some googling brought me to this ubuntu bug report
Your USB-to-parallel adapter does not pass through the printer ID. The device is recognized as printer, but there is no information about manufacturer and model. Therefore system-config-printer and hal-cups-utils automatically assign the text-only printer to the unknown device.
In general you have to run system-config-printer and manually choose manufacturer and model.
That you cannot print at all is a bug of the "hal" CUPS backend. See
    https://fedorahosted.org/hal-cups-utils/ticket/5
    Try to do the following:
    cupsctl FileDevice=yes
    lpadmin -p <your print queue name> -E -v file:/dev/usb/lp0
This is an ugly workaround which works if you have only one printer (the one with the adapter cable) on USB. Does it work for you?
Now the problem is that I can not add my printer via the system-config-printer. However, if I go the CUPS web interface and hit manage printers the driver is listed as the following:
    Driver:    Local Raw Printer (grayscale)
Now I think that is my issue... I need to have it set to the correct driver... if I hit modify printer and select my Make/Model I get the following access error:
    401 Unauthorized
Enter your username and password or the root username and password to access this page. If you are using Kerberos authentication, make sure you have a valid Kerberos ticket.
However there is no prompt or I do not know where to enter this information to.

  • I can't find HP LaserJet 1100 printer driver.

I got My Mac to "see" my PC's shared folder and I'm so excited. Then I tried to print but it didn't have my print driver: the HP LaserJet 1100. Is there some way to get it or some other way to make it work?
    Thanks.

No I am. I started to answer a different question. Sorry. If I could delete my post I would have.

  • HP Laserjet 1100 Print Issue

I have above printer connected to Windows XP Pro 2002 SP2 laptop system.  When sending print job to printer the print queue appears to process normally (job shows up, changes status, then disappears).  However printer never responds:  lights do not blink and nothing prints.
I disconnect the printer and connect it to a Windows XP Pro 2002 SP 3 system (using same printer cable) and printer operates correctly!  So the printer cable should be OK.
I connect a different printer--a Canon--to each computer system and it works correctly.  So the print cable port on the laptop should be OK.
I downloaded the latest driver for the 1100 from HP site onto the laptop, removed the printer defn and re-added the printer...same problem.
Any thoughts as to why the printer is not responding when sending print job?  Printer is still good...hate to toss it in the trash.
Note that these 2 computer systems are stand-alone (no networking between them) as is the printer.
    Thanks.

  • Barcode printing issues with Laserjet 1100 8.1 driver

    Hi All,
I've ran into issues printing coupons to my Laserjet 1100 printer using Windows 8.1. This worked with no issues (and still does) in Windows 8. Looking at the driver versions, it appears that something was updated form 8 to 8.1.It seems this issue is related
to printing any barcodes. Has anyone else encounters this? Is there any way I can use the Windows 8 driver instead?

For anyone interested, the way I was able to fix this issue is with the
HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6
    http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/swdHome/?sp4ts.oid=4157320&ac.admitted=1399039456352.876444892.199480143
I selected Windows 8.1 x64, then downloaded the PCL5 driver and now the barcodes work.

  • Problem with networking HP Laserjet 1100 with Leopard with new Intel iMac

I have an HP Laserjet 1100 that I have used with my old iMac running Panther. I had used the HPIJS drivers in the past with the HP Laserjet 5 driver selected. It worked flawlessly. I use IPP to connect to the printer via a printer server.
I have purchased a new iMac which is Intel based and runs Leopard. I am having a lot of trouble getting this printer to work with it. I went to the website referenced above and installed Ghostscript, Foomatic RIP and then finally HPIJS. As I add the printer, it gave me the option to select an HP Laserjet 1100 printer (from the HPIJS set). When I add the IP address, it says it is valid. When I try to print, there is no response; the job just times out. I had the same problem with the Gutenprint driver that was installed with Leopard.
Finally, I tried the HP Laserjet 6 from the HPIJS driver set. It had the word "recommended" next to it which was intriguing. It too did not work.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Steve Kirchner

I'm afraid that Ghostscript, etc. are PPC only applications and any printer plug-ins they install will not work on an Intel Mac. You should uninstall all the third-party stuff you've installed for the printer, then only use the included printer driver installed by OS X unless HP has a universal binary driver compatible with OS X and Intel Macs. You might try using LPD rather than IPP for the printer.

  • Printing from HP LaserJet 1100

I have an HP LaserJet 1100 that used to print from a PC that died. How can I get it to print from my new iMac G5? I went to the HP website and couldn't find drivers for any Mac OS. Thanks for any help.

Thanks, I downloaded the drivers and will try.
Dumb question: what's the best way to connect the printer to my iMac? Printer doesn't have a USB port... (connects via parallel printer cable). Thx

  • LaserJet 1100 won't print in WordPerfect X4 unless manual button is pressed for each page.

Hi - I'm using a Toshiba Satellite - Windows Vista 64 bit operating system.  When using WordPerfect X4, I can't get my HP LaserJet 1100 to print unless I manually push the button for each page.  I have no problems getting it to print automatically in Word or with .pdf documents.  Something is not compatible with WordPerfect.  It was printing fine to begin with, but once I printed an older version of Avery labels, it seemed to trigger this need to have to manually press the big button.  Help!

Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

    Hi,
The drivers for your printer are already included within Windows Update.
Follow these steps to install the printer on a Windows 7 PC:

  • HP Laserjet 1300 backend failed

I have a HP laserjet 1300 printer that used to work, and stopped working for no apparent reason.  I hit print for web pagers, documents, etc and get this error:  "backend failed".  My other HP printers work, just not this laser jet.  I've deleted the  printer.  I have installed the printer via IP and via bonjouvi (sp) with same result.

  • Manual Duplexing use on a HP Laserjet P1102w printer-How is it done?

This is a first using a manual duplex option on a printer and I have been unable to print on both sides of an HP Laserjet P1102w printer, despite doing the following:
    Went to Print Setup
Under Finish: chose Print on Both Sides Manually
    Left edge binding
and although it prints....I can't seem to get the 'booklet' to print correctly on the other side; Not even sure how to correctly get the paper in so it doesn't double print on the same page.
: I've tried to print first reverse pages,
    then even pages in reverse,
but still unable to get the pages in order to fold and create a booklet or print multiple pages on both sides...has anyone had experience with this on what is the best way to try and print documents in booklet form or just both pages to save paper?
Is there a driver or support that will help with this?
No visual screen pops up on the monitor to help with placing the papers so it will print correctly and I have already tried with just a 6 page booklet and failed there.
I've tried googling the results, checked the HP website for any information and either have missed the support information to do this or assume there is none.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

  • Expanding memory on HP LaserJet 1100

I installed a new memory card on my HP LaserJet 1100 (part # MXC7843A) and now can't get my printer to print.   I installed the card according to downloaded instructions from HP ("Installing DIMMs") and it seemed to go in just fine.  I tried reinstalling the printer software and rebooting the computer but still nothing.  The computer seems to be sending the page to print o.k.  All 3 lights on the control panel are blinking in unison.  According to the Quick Reference Guide, this means that "printer initialization is taking place".  Holding down the leftmost most light (the "go" button) doesn't do anything.

I had the same problem when I installed a brand new memory module C4137A which is 16 MB RAM. All lights are blinking. When I remove the memory it is fine again.
    Anyone with a solution?

  • MacBook + HP LaserJet 1100 + AirPort

I would like to print wirelessly using my HP LaserJet 1100 with my new MacBook, but it looks like it will be more difficult than I thought.
    Problem #1:
My HP does not officially work with my macbook. Is GutenPrint or HPIJS the better solution for a driver and printing wirelessly (I suspect GutenPrint)?
    Problem #2:
The HP uses a parallel port connection, not a USB connection. It looks like Sabrent, Sewell and Belkin all make USB to parallel port adapters, but whether or not one will work seems to be pretty hit or miss and specific to the computer/printer combination. Which one will (or is most likely) to work?
    Problem #3:
As I said, I want to print wirelessly. I have read several posts that say that some printers don’t work with an AirPort base station, even if that printer works with the actual computer (I think it is because the printer does not advertise that it is available over the network). Does GutenPrint overcome this problem (as suggested here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=825581&tstart=15)? If not, what workarounds exist?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

How do you have it connected, USB adapter or parallel port?

  • HP Laserjet 1100

I send a document to the HP Laserjet 1100.  The document shows up in the Queue.  It then disappears from the queue as if it printed, but it did not print.
If I remove the paper, or turn off the printer, and then send the document to the printer, it hangs in the queue until I turn the printer on or put the paper back in the feeder.
It worked on Friday, last week, but would not work starting on Monday.
Also, I can print a test page from the printer self-test, but not from the printer properties in Windows 7.

How do you have it connected, USB adapter or parallel port?

  • Connecting a 1994 HP Laserjet 4MP printer to my new iMac

Hello all. I just recently bought a new iMac, and I am having difficulty getting an older HP Laserjet 4MP printer to communicate properly with the iMac. I originally thought that I needed a parallel to usb cable, so I bought one of these, but the computer would work briefly for one print out and then fail to print again. I then read the printer's manual, and it indicates that if you are going to connect the printer to a macintosh computer you need to use a standard 8 pin localtalk cable. I still have my original localtalk cable from when I used to use this printer with an older powermac in the early 90s, but I cannot find on the internet, or in any stores, a female 8 pin to usb adapter.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts on what I might try, or perhaps recommend a place to purchase the correct adapter / cable? I really like this printer and it has been working great, so I hate to get rid of it. Thanks in advance for any replies you all have. If I cannot come up with a solution I might just buy a new printer.

    D. P.
I wouldn't bother with any 8 pin arrangement as that is putting a further complication in the chain.
The Keyspan USB to parallel adaptor cable is on this page.
    http://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Parallel.spml
I have used this cable on three Mac OS's (10.2, 10.3 and10.5) without the need to load any driver for it. The Mac seems to know what it is.
However, if you can send a page to the printer with what you have, then I am unsure, if what you have is sufficient, or if the keyspan version somehow handles the Input/Output data transfer better.
I am reluctant to advise you buying this if it is not going to change anything without first investigating if the driver you are using is causing this one page then stop behaviour.
When you click in Print and Fax, highlight the HP and where is says Kind it may say
Generic postscript Printer, whereas it would be better if if said GutenPrint v5.13.
However I did not have to do anything to get this setting, Leopard just found it.
You could select the printer again, with it switched on and in the left hand panel, control click and choose Reset printing System, as this may reset the driver to GutenPrint.
If that fails to set it, click on *Open Print Queue* ... then Info, then click on Driver and select GutenPrint v5.13 from the list, and see how that goes.
