HP LaserJet 1160 & Postscript

Does the 1160 support Postscript printing?

I have just been given an HP Laserjet 1160 with no drivers or documentation. I have, through trial and error found that the PCL 5 universal driver is the only one that I can use with this printer on Win7 Home Premium 64 bit.
While not a definitive answer, I conclude the PS driver does not work on this printer with Win7 64 bit. Hope this helps.

  • Laserjet 1160 and Vista

Hello! My mum has an HP Laserjet 1160. She has been using the printer with no problems with her PC that was on Windows XP. Last week she purchased a new PC. The new PC is on Vista. We have hooked up the Laserjet to the new PC. When I look at the Control Panel > Printers, the printer is listed but when I try to print a test page, it does not print. I have watched the print queue as it tries to print the test page and I can see that in the queue, it spools, prints (but doesn't actually print) and then deletes from the queue. I have tried deleting the printer and adding it again. I have tried downloading the drivers from the HP website. I downloaded the 1160 driver and then I downloaded the HP LaserJet 1160 PCL5e Driver - I wasn't exactly sure what that was meant to do but it seemed like a good idea. I am really stuck now. Please help! Any ideas or advice will be VERY much appreciated. Thank you! Susannah

Just as a quick sidenote, I failed to mention that I was able to get it to work on my XP Pro machine selecting 1100 series as my driver. It seems this is only related to my two macs.

  • Printing in adobe with a laserjet 1160

I am trying to print an adobe file on a laserjet 1160 and no matter what selections I choose on Adobe or on the printer, the document prints wil a small margin on all four sides.  The margins are built into the doc so the printer is actually resizing it for me.
how can I disable this feature?

Thanks Greg Sahli, your suggestion worked.
The whole Laserwriter8 thing in Classic I found confusing. When selected, I got the message that Laserwriter8 requires AppleTalk. Please make sure you are connected to an AppleTalk network. Then I select Appletalk and get the message: AppleTalk can't be opened. To turn on AT, open network preference & click on AT. Then I went to the control panel & got message: That application is not supported by AT. Then I just gave up and went back to my Classic Application and as you suggested there was my C88 printer to print to. Anyhow, it PRINTS! Thanks.

  • HP LaserJet 1160 randomly stops working

I have an HP LaserJet 1160 attached by USB to my mac. It prints great, until sometimes it just stops. Every once in a while, maybe once a day, when I print nothing happens. The print queue viewer shows a status of "Opening connection to the printer". If I turn the printer off and on again and restart the job, it prints fine, and life continues until the next time.
Has anybody seen this and fixed it?

I have a few clients that have this printer and the moment we upgraded them from Tiger to Leopard all the clients started having the intermittent printing issue. I've also installed the lastest HP driver update with no luck. All of the computers are the latest generation imacs trying to print over USB to the hp laserjet 1160.

  • HP Laserjet 1160 over Airport Express

I recently got an HP LaserJet 1160le and wanted to hook it up to my network using an Airport Express. I have used other printers with the airport express in its current config with no problems, but now I have an issue.
If i plug the printer directly into my powerbook via USB, the driver is automatically detected and everything is spiffy. When I add the printer through Bonjour, it doesn't detect the driver. The 1160 and 1320 are nearly identical and the drivers are almost the same, so I choose the 1320 driver.
When I print i get a single page with a few lines that state:
    %!PS-Adobe-3.0 %RBINumCopies: 1
There are a few more lines but nothing that really seems to point to the problem. When I try and add the same printer to an XP Pro machine the 1320 drivers don't work, but the 1100 drivers work which would be a better match to begin with. The 1100 drivers and the HP Laserjet 1.3 driver are not available as a choice when setting up on the Mac. Anyone have any ideas or solutions?

It may work with a third-party driver such as the HPIJS drivers or the Gimp-Print drivers, but this is not the case with all printers.

  • HP Laserjet 1300n: Postscript? PCL? too slow

    Hello,
I have a Laserjet 1300n (max memory, 80 MB) connected with USB 1.1 to my iMac 2.4 GHz.
If I print only text the printer is fast, no problems at all. As soon as an image or logo or any bitmap appears, the printer slows down, a lot: one minute per page (before starting the print) is easily reached and I have to wait often more.
How can that be? I read somewhere that CUPS rasterizes the data before sending it to the printer, but the iMac-processor used is almost nothing.
I also connected the printer to a netbook Celeron 900 MHz... it printed *instantly*. I was surprised and envy, of course.
Now I think the printer is getting the data in postscript format and maybe it takes too much for the internal processor to rasterize it, but how to change the mode in Snow Leopard? If CUPS can rasterize, SL should be able too. Where should I look for this setting? I found nothing.
As side question, I also wonder in which cases does the internal memory help speed: I maxed it because I got 64 MB for few euros, but not much changed. Maybe it helps only when using raster data, taking more memory than Postscript commands/data? I'm not an expert in this field.
Thank you in advance for the help.

Thanks, I didn't know about that driver.
I think that now everything gets rendered locally, since the printer queue shows a percentage increasing during the rendering.
I am still not 100% satisfied, since the gutenprint driver tops at 600 dpi while the PS driver can also go to 1200 dpi (I can see the difference) and the images are now too dark (the dithering technique changed, ordered patterns from PS reproduce grays more accurately, at expense of resolution), but I think this is the best I can get from the printer when connected to a Mac, so that's it.

  • HP LaserJet 4 Postscript driver on Intel MacBook Pro

I have an HP Laserjet 4M printer (with a JetDirect card) on my network. On my other Macs (PowerBook G4, PowerMac G4, Mac Mini PPC) all running 10.4 I set the printer up and was able to use the 'HP Laserjet 4/4M PostScript' (v1.1.0.X) driver. The support site lists printer drivers included with 10.4 and lists the 'HP LasderJet 4/4M PostScript' driver (v1.1.0.X) as being part of the HP printer package provided with 10.4 - I assume that is what I'm using on these machines. I just got a new MacBook Pro with 10.4 and can't find the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript driver anywhere - I've tried to re-load the HP printer drivers from the install CD and it says they are already installed. When I choose the model in the printer setup utility I see the LJ 4 Gimp driver but not the other. I've currently set it up with the Generic PostScript driver, but that doesn't have any of the model specific options that the HP driver has. Are the printer drivers that are supplied with 10.4 different for PowerPC vs Intel Macs? Or am I not looking in the right place for the driver?
    TIA
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
Well done with finding the file. Based on your info I searched the PPD folder and found the LaserJet 4.gz, which after unpacking and opening saw that it was ppd for the HP LaserJet 4/4M PostScript 600DPI entry I could see in the printer list under HP.
As to how this file got there I cannot say for sure. I would have said that it was part of the 10.4.6 DVD that came with the MacBook Pro. But after checking a new Mini, I found it doesn't have this file? So, I know I have previously run a HP installer to help a forum postee. Maybe the LaserJet 4.gz was added by this installer. Certainly the 'Date Modified' field is different to the other HP files (04/03/2005 vs 17/11/2005) and it is the only file with this date. Very weird!!
    Looking at the ppd there is reference to five printer driver plug-ins;
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpColorOptions.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpEdgeToEdge.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpFinishing.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpImageQuality.plugin"
    *APDialogExtension: "/Library/Printers/hp/PDEs/hpProofAndPrint.plugin"
Now, all of these files are present on my Mac and when I looked at the info of these files I found there are written in Universal. Checking the Mini again, I found the same files, also in Universal, so it looks like the plug-ins are part of the OS X 10.4.6 install. So, if the LaserJet 4.gz file was added by a different installer, it is interesting that it makes use of these plugins that are already present.
Anyway, we may never now the answer but the concern now is that you have a speed/quality issue using the ppd. The fact that you took this file from a PPC Mac won't be the issue. A ppd is just a text file describing a variety of options for the printer. But if you don't have those plugins mentioned earlier then that could cause delays and the quality issue, because the option to set the 600dpi quality is within these plugins. The other thing could be that the ppd you obtained from the PPC Mac wants to use different files to the ones you do have. Open the ppd using TextEdit - you should see something near the top like above (or the exact thing). Look at where the files should be and check that they are there.
The other thing I noticed is that the ppd is calling an old version of the PostScript Interpreter (v2011.110), which is Level 2. I'm not sure how well the Intel Mac's work with level 2, maybe additional instructions are required or Rosetta has to be used which is causing delays in the file creation and therefore the spooling? Without a PSLvl2 device I cannot confirm this, but it may explain why the PPC's are spooling faster than the Intel. A test could be to set the Universal application to open using Rosetta. I would use TextEdit, and with it still set to Universal, print a few pages and time it. Then, set TextEdit to open using Rosetta (by doing a Get Info on the application icon) and print the same file. If there is no difference then my idea is rubbish and there must be something else. But if it does make a difference, then you have a workaround. Although I personally believe that slowing your Mac so that the spooling appears quicker is not the answer. Might be time to invest in a brand new HP...
    Regards,
    Paul

I am having a difficult experience with the Hp 2055dn too and if since 2009 you have found no reponse, then the HP laser 2055 has a deep problem especially for Vists users like me. Since I cannot get it to print mirror images with the 2050 driver provided, I tried to download the PS driver but the 16MB times out.
I am regreting this buy unless someone comes to my rescue, pronto.

  • EXPERT DAY REQUEST!!!!! Laserjet M602 postscript feature values (specifically, "setpagedevice")?

Pasted previously on the Community Home/Printing and Digital Imaging/Printers - LaserJet forum but thought I'd take advantage of the "HP Expert Day" and so am copying the posting on the "printer and all-in-ones" board:
I have just spent two hours trying without success to find the values that the Laserjet M602 recognises in the postscript "%%BeginFeature" dictionary block for "setpagedevice"; to select the input tray mostly but other stuff in general. Does anyone know where this info can be found? I don't have much hair left to pull out...!

  • Is my HP LaserJet 1300 postscript compatible with Mac 10.9 Mavericks?

I am using a LaserJet 1300 with Windows XP.  Because Microsoft does not support XP anymore, I must buy a new computer.  I am considering changing to the iMac, but I love my 1300 postscript printer.  The Mac sales rep said to find out if HP 1300 has drivers that are compatible with 10.9 Mavericks.
I've searched the Internet and even called customer support.  The customer rep was in India or somewhere.  I could not understand what he was saying.  Would appreciate any help with this.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
The Laserjet 1300 is supported on Mavericks, as you may find listed for the HP LaserJet 1300 Series below:

  • LaserJet 4M PostScript print quality/functionality

I have a LaserJet4M, connected to my Mac (and all my other machines) using its ethernet JetDirect card.
My problem is that the PostScript driver for the 4M appears to have disappeared. Printing with the generic PostScript driver works only for simple documents. Printing with the Gutenprint driver results in poor quality output. (Gutenprint has never given me good output for graphics, rather than text, with this printer.)
Has anyone figured out how to get the PostScript driver for the 4M/4M-Plus from previous OS X releases to work with Snow Leopard?
Apple -- you've really dropped the ball here.

The PPDs in question are already present on the newer machine.
I tried both the LaserJet 5M and LaserJet 4ML drivers, with no real change.
Any PostScript sent (from Preview, for example) yields
    "ERROR: invalidfont
    OFFENDING COMMAND: show
    STACK:
The old iBook G4 and the Windows machines all print PostScript just fine.

  • HP LaserJets emulate Postscript

    Hello,
First, thanks to Greg Sahli for putting a previous thread which found a work around for my problem....
Printer was printing garbage (raw postscript code) to the printer when I first configured it.
    I have a HP LaserJet 2100 (plain, not a M or TN)
    JectDirect J6057A )r25.57)
I ended p using the driver "Laserrjet 6 series, Gimp-Print", using LPD protocols and its working.
Why didn't the 2100 series driver work (shouldn't it know its PCL, not PS)?
Do you need an optional PS emulation DIMM (and has anyone seen them available)
Thanks again, this is a great resource.

HP (and other manufacturers - especially the high-end office equip makers like Xerox & Canon) assume that since you have a Mac, you'll want to print postscript. For those, the included driver on OS X is the postscript driver.
I don't think it's worth it to get the postscript card, but someone here said they got it on eBay - at least I think it was for the 2100.
